Book Description
FCF was written with one strongly held principle in mind: Corporate Finance should be developed in terms of a few integrated, powerful ideas. RWJ took a hard look at what was truly important and useful; in doing so, they eliminated topics of dubious relevance, downplayed purely theoretical issues, and minimized the use of extensive and elaborate calculations to illustrate points that are either intuitively obvious or of limited practical use. As a result of this process, three basic themes became the central focus of FCF: An Emphasis on Intuition, A Unified Valuation Approach, and A Managerial Focus.
And remember, every text purchased from Irwin/McGraw Hill comes packaged free with F.A.S.T. software, and calculator supplement cards.
Customer Reviews:
A must.......2001-03-30
I have a master degree in finance and I believe this is the best work from Stepehen Ross. The book can be utilized for graduate students as well as undergraduate. If you are looking for a book which is extensively comprehensive and at the same time friendly you are looking for this book. It also contains diverse examples involving the use of financial calculators and software. It furnishes a preview on mergers and acquisitions and constantly tends to go beyond corporate to multinational
Ross does it again!.......1999-01-18
I have two corp fin books by Ross and company. This book was purchased while studing for the Level I of the CFA exam. The other book was used in graduate school. Both books are sub par in quality and were not cheap either. Save your money. Don't use this text.
A very effective tool for introducing Corporate Finance........1998-12-14
I have used this text in two corporate finance courses that I have taken at university and it was very helpful in allowing me to understand the concepts that were being presented in class.
A standout introduction to corporate finance.......1998-11-08
This text was a requirement for my Chartered Financial Analyst exam, and it has been one of the few texts that I have decided to keep on my bookshelf. It does a wonderful job of making basic financial subjects like time value of money and capital structure lucid and easy to understand. I only wish more finance professors would use it in their classrooms rather than the dry, pedantic texts they've been using! Just having an academic text that speaks plain English is a boon for students, and "Fundamentals of Corporate Finance" excels in that respect.
Great Book!!!!!.......1998-10-05
I am a ITESM Edo. de Mexico MBA student. This book is almost mandatory to understand the fundamentals of Corporate Finance. I guess that if they had it in the American Book Store, they would sell several of them. The lead time is too long. There is a translation to Spanish, but I rather have the English version. If you can wait that long buy the book, it is worth it.

Book Description
The clear market leader in the corporate finance course, this text filled a very definite need for a MODERN corporate finance text back in 1983 when the first edition was published. It is known for its intuitive, conversational style and for being able to tie together many of the important ideas in corporate finance. The author's discussions and illustrations are unique due to the depth of detail blended with a distinct sense of humor. This new edition will continue to be authoritative and student friendly but will also carry stronger, modern coverage reflected by current examples and data as well as unique emphasis upon agency issues.

blah blah blah..........2007-03-13
good basic financial principles... not much for interest, but does do a descent job of conveying and illustrating basic financial principles.
A solid introduction to corporate finance.......2003-05-23
This Brealey and Myers's textbook, now in its 7th edition, introduces the student to the fascinating world of corporate finance. The first few chapters of the book demystify Net Present Value, the preferred method for calculating the value of an investment project. Brealey and Myers then explain how risk and return are related and introduce the Capital Asset Pricing Model. The CAPM's strengths and weaknesses are both explored in detail. The authors continue by analyzing the significance of dividend policy and debt policy for a corporation -- including the rather surprising result that in perfect markets these just don't matter! The next topic is options, financial and real; major pricing models are covered, and warrants and convertibles get a fair treatment, too. The remaining parts of the book deal with a variety of topics such as valuing debt, managing financial risks, financial planning as well as mergers and corporate governance.
At 1071 pages, Principles of Corporate Finance can hardly be called a short book. Introductory textbooks often suffer from a "too-much-too-little" syndrome, in that numerous topics are covered, but none too well. Brealey and Myers easily avoid this pitfall. Their writing is solid and manages to keep the reader's interest. Although available space puts a limit on what can be said, the book's coverage is quite comprehensive and well linked to the results of modern research. Moreover, all topics receive their fair share of treatment so you can actually understand the theories the book presents. It should be noted here that some mathematical background is probably necessary to make the book easy reading.
Each chapter contains many problems which can be used to facilitate the learning process. I found them very useful. The only complaint I have about the book (International Edition) is that the binding proved less than perfect, as after a while pages started separating from the main body of the work. But that is a problem I can live with.
All in all, an interesting, readable, authoritative introduction to corporate finance.
CORPORATE FINANCE BIBLE ON WALL STREET.......2003-03-20
I have used this book three times now: as an undergraduate in financial economics, at the training program at an investment bank, and at the core finance course at my MBA. It is a very good resource and learning tool, going from the very basic ideas of discounting all the way to options pricing and more innovative finance.
This is the preferred learning tools of all finance professors I have met and the reference used by all finance professionals I met. It is very simple to follow the concepts of the book, especially if you purchase the study guide that is available with it.
The only major concern I have heard is that it does not deal with the more recent finance problems of off-balance sheet financing and other shenanigans. This is a book meant to teach basic financial theory, so those topics, in my opinion, are better treated elsewhere.
Book ..........2003-01-03
This books [is bad] primarily because it is called "Principles of Corporate Finance". This is NOT AN INTRO book to finance. An intro book would have spent more time going over basic concepts like balance sheets and income statement. Also the sample problems at times can be really hard to follow. I highly recommend using Fundamentals of Corporate Finance by Ross, Westerfield, and Jordan as a supplement to this if you have no finance background.
Inappropriate for intro MBA finance but professors love it.......2002-08-30
The wide range of reactions to this textbook simply indicates the fact that it is NOT actually a good introductory text for the typically diverse MBA student mix found in any intro-level course. Yet that is PRECISELY the usage for which it is known: intro-level corporate finance classes in MBA programs. My MBA program also used B&M, but a group of us simultaneously volunteered for a focus group run by the publisher of Aswath Damodaran's excellent Corporate Finance textbook. We followed the Damodaran text alongside our B&M text for the entire semester. At semester's end EVERY SINGLE MBA IN THE FOCUS GROUP preferred Damodaran's text -- and the group contained electrical engineers with graduate degrees and former I-bank analysts as well as former ballet dancers and journalists. Damodaran is an award-winning finance professor at NYU. B&M is heavy on the academic scholarship, far removed from the real hurley-burley of Wall Street, and despite the humour (which I did enjoy) it cannot successfully meet the needs of a broad range of students. Yet it continues to be used for just that purpose -- indeed, my MBA alma mater ignored the student feedback and continues to use B&M, the professors' darling... If you are suffering with this text, do yourself a favour and get Damodaran's, which is a text designed to TEACH by a professor who truly cares that ALL his students master corporate finance.
Book Description
This text has enjoyed incredible success in the last two editions. The introductory corporate finance market has embraced the “essentialized” product. The message for this edition of Essentials continues from the second edition - this is THE text for both finance and non-finance majors. The authors continue to maintain a corporate finance framework but have enhanced general business topics wherever appropriate.

Great!.......2007-07-26
I think the book does a good job of simplifying finance for those of us who are beginners in the field. They give clear, step-by-step examples so that it is easy to understand
Finance Textbook.......2007-07-23
The textbook's price was competitive, it was delivered in a timely manner as promised and in mint condition as promised.
I enjoyed doing business with this supplier.
Not sure why someone rated it poorly.......2007-06-02
I'm an MBA student with quite a number of courses finished. I'm over half way through the finance course that uses this book and have found it to be written very well. The example problems are great, and the explanations are thorough. Our professor did make available the answers to the questions at the back of the book and used the powerpoints developed by the author. All in all the only drawback I could find was cost (as usual with college texts). As a side note, several students did use the 4th edition in our class with the permission of the instructor and did just fine.
Finance Textbook.......2007-02-11
The description of the textbook on the web was confusing and resulted in the buying the wrong book; but the return policy and credit correction worked very well;
Good for a textbook.......2007-01-03
I had to buy this book and use it for Finance class. It was helpful and used real world examples.

ghostinthecloset.......2006-08-31
Before I read this book I couldn't understand how anyone could actually enjoy technical writing. After reading it, I realized the enjoyment must come from the money made from the product. There isn't another rational explanation. The Bible describes this type of behavior in depth.
What Tech Writers Do.......2005-11-16
"What exactly does a technical writer do?" In Writing A Professional Life-Stories of Technical Communicators On and Off the Job, twenty-three technical communicators discuss how they came to the profession, the daily challenges they face, and life beyond the job.
Writing A Professional Life-Stories of Technical Communicators On and Off the Job was published in 2001. Editor Dale S. Sullivan conceived the idea for the book as a teaching tool for his undergraduate technical communication students at Michigan Technological University. Until this collection, there was no publication detailing technical communication from the professional's perspective, and Dale was having a difficult time "selling" the major to his students. He thought a group of narratives written by the people who actually do the work would be better than anything he could come up with. After putting out a "call for stories" through the Milwaukee STC, many emails, meetings, and phone calls, his idea became a reality. These informative and entertaining narratives comprise three parts: In Part 1, Initiation Stories, we meet several newcomers to technical communication. In Part 2, The Process introduces us to seasoned technical communicators firmly entrenched in the daily processes of the profession. In Part 3, Life On and Off the Job, we meet technical communicators with varied cultural and intellectual interests. Writing A Professional Life also has a Topical Contents that reads like an index of the challenges and concerns technical communicators face daily, from Office Politics, Collaboration and Teamwork, and Gender Issues to process-centered topics like Draft Review, GUI Design, and Software Documentation.
I was fascinated to read about people so much like me. The first narrative I read, "What A Life," was written by a technical writer living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, my hometown. She, too, was the first person in her family to graduate from college. Some contributors came to the profession with a love for literature and writing, but they realized that earning a living as a fiction writer was unlikely at best. They wanted to earn a living through writing and found technical communication a solution.
The technical communicator in "Fluff" has been in the profession long enough to have the mention of his name followed by "is he still alive?" Although he has worked as a contractor for over twenty years and dealt with just about every brand of hostility out there, he remains committed to this profession because technical communication is in his marrow; it's not just a job, it's his identity.
In "A Job Like A Tattoo," a newcomer to the profession quickly learns that in addition to not being greeted by the development team with open arms, she's faced with outright hostility from a programmer. She learns how to handle intimidating coworkers and difficult SMEs and overcomes her original expectations of her job. In "Madame Mao In the Midwest," we see what can happen at a great job for writers when incompetent editors and managers are allowed to reign. And in "It's Not Mark Twain's River Anymore," we see that mutual respect and support from another writer on the team cannot overcome management's inability to see writers as important contributors to the company product. Sometimes you just have to move on.
Some stories are all too familiar, such as not being allowed to participate in the project until the 11th hour. But hope springs eternal in "Diary of a Tech Writer," where our hero jumps in at the outset of the project. She's regarded as an asset and a professional, and she isn't beneath bribing developers with fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies to meet deadlines.
This represents only a sampling of the narratives in Writing A Professional Life. Whether you're a pubs department manager, a lone tech writer who's new to the profession, or a clueless scribe who stumbled into technical communication for reasons unknown even to you, you'll be entertained, informed, and validated by this collection. I immediately recognized that I was in the company of those who know what a technical writer does all day. So the next time someone asks you, "What exactly does a technical writer do?" point him or her to this volume of narratives from the experts. Or read it yourself when you need a reality check. You'll definitely find it in this collection.
What does a "Technical Writer" do?.......2001-12-30
As the author of one of the twenty-three narratives that appear in this book, I would like to explain what I think its purpose, its role, might be. Not many people outside the industry know what a technical writer is or what he or she does for a living. This book explains that and more. It illustrates, using cleverly disguised real-world examples, what work -- and life -- is like for a technical writer. The stories are excellent depictions of life in the field, and I can honestly recommend this book to anyone who might want to know about or might want to become a technical writer. This text is an excellent source for students.
Experience Being a Technical Communicator.......2001-10-24
The book " Writing a Professional Life," by Gerald L. Savage and Dale L. Sullivan, attempts to define technical communication with a narrative structure to students and people with an interest in becoming technical communicators. With a collection of narrative stories, the book is very helpful representing and teaching the field of technical communication through experience. The authors of the narrative stories carry similar characteristics to that of the audience, as well as reflect the ideas and mindset of the audience. In addition, the writing reflects the authors' personalities. The book's organization of different sections parallels and correlates to the field of technical communication. By addressing the following concepts:
· Technical problems (e.g., software)
· Workplace concerns
· Off the job interferences/life issues
· Interpersonal skills
· Communication between different fields/professions
(e.g., communication with people who have different
knowledge base)
· Defining technical communication
Review.......2001-10-23
This is a collection of 23 essays divided into three sections: "Initiation Stories," "The Process," and "Life On and Off the Job." Each section contains six to nine essays written by technical communicators at various stages in their careers. These vignettes touch on ethics, organizational dynamics, content, tools, business communications, and communication issues among others. This text will prove most useful to the prospective technical communicator who may not have any previous experience or concept of what the job entails. This text might also prove useful to novice technical communicators as the stories offer advice through humor, moralistic tales, `horror' stories with happy endings, and explicit and implicit advice. Each selection is preceded by a brief biography to give a more human focus to the stories. While the text might prove useful and comforting for new or prospective technical communicators, readers who have more experience with technical communication might not find the text as useful. This text is part of the Allyn & Bacon Series in Technical Communication, and as such is probably most appealing to students and educators involved in academic programs focused on technical writing rather than the practicing technical writers in industry.

Book Description
Over the past 20 years, informal dispute resolution has played an increasingly important role in the way people handle their conflicts. Mediators are said to act as neutral third parties who "empower" disputants to negotiate their own mutually acceptable agreement. Shailor proposes a definition of empowerment in which communication is the primary social process, the ongoing symbolic interaction which not only reflects reality, but constitutes it. Using this definition, he analyzes the process of empowerment by examining the verbal and nonverbal interactions in three mediation cases, identifying the patterns of communication through which empowerment does or does not occur. Shailor concludes that mediators need to develop a more sophisticated understanding of their interactions with disputants, including an understanding of the ways that mediators can become enmeshed in the disputants' ongoing struggles.
Book Description
This provocative book develops empowerment theory in the context of community mediation. Schwerin uses a case study of a large urban community mediation program to explore the empowerment concept and to assess widely believed hypotheses about empowerment and community mediation. The major contributions of this work to Transformational Politics and the community mediation movement include the development and elaboration of empowerment theory; the analysis of mediation ideology, mediation training, and mediation process; and the exploration of the linkage between community mediation and personal and social transformation.
Customer Reviews:
A New Paradigm for Transformational Politics.......2002-06-06
Schwerin provides a strong and cogent analysis of the connections between mediation training in conflict resolution and personal, social and political transformation. This book offers a new and thought provoking view on the possibilities for stronger participatory democratic systems, based on individual citizen empowerment, through mediation training. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in further study on the ability to transform current political systems into models that offer greater opportunities for peaceful conflict resolution and personal participation in government.
