Book Description
In recent years many countries have liberalized their financial markets as a central element of their efforts to reform their economies and increase their economic growth rates. Financial deregulation leads to a fundamental restructuring of a country's economy and polity, as market forces, not state officials, begin to determine who obtains financial resources and at what cost. A critical question is whether countries can undertake a program of liberalization while undergoing democratic transformation. In this study, Arvid John Lukauskas explores why governments tightly regulate their country's financial system and why they choose to liberalize it.
Using a rational choice approach, Lukauskas contends that public officials provide the dynamic behind the evolution of financial regulation as they seek to retain power and generate public revenue. Lukauskas argues that the nature of a country's political institutions shape the incentives facing politicians and influence whether they seek to regulate closely or liberalize financial markets in the pursuit of their goals. Lukauskas then tests his ideas in an in-depth case study of the evolution of financial policy in Spain, a country that transformed its financial system into a mostly market-based system after years of heavy state intervention, while undergoing a transformation from a dictatorship to a democracy. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that leaders will not undertake structural change during periods of democratization, he finds that leaders in Spain undertook financial liberalization despite opposition from powerful groups, because democratization gave Spanish leaders a strong incentive to improve economic performance through financial reform in order to compete for votes.
This book will be of interest to political scientists and economists interested in studying financial markets and the effects of regime change, including democratization, on economic reform.
Arvid John Lukauskas is Assistant Professor of Political Science, Columbia University.

Book Description
This work deals with the political transition in Spain from authoritarianism to democracy and its impact on business. It addresses the fundamental questions of how business was affected by the transition and how business, in turn, influenced the course of democratization, through collective action, and how it influenced the marketplace through the aggregate of individual business decisions. The work has a strong empirical base. Data was collected from the chief executive officers of 260 Spanish companies and the managing directors of over one hundred affiliates of the top-ranked business association, the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations (the "CEOE"). The work is particularly timely in light of the transitions occurring in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Unlike many earlier political transitions to more open systems, in Latin America and Southern Europe, the dynamics of economic change concurrent with political change is getting much greater attention in the East European transitions. The East European systems are attempting simultaneous political transitions with movement from command to market economies. Some East Europeans have studied the Spanish experience to garner lessons for their own efforts.

Book Description
Integrating Southern Europe presents a stimulating comparative analysis of the position of Spain within the European Union and within the global political economy. It combines a historical perspective by looking at the Spanish political economy throughout the twentieth century, with an analysis of the process of democratization in Southern Europe and of Spain's increasingly trans-European outlook. Otto Holman argues that the progression of a transnational power configuration between social forces, the emergence of a transnational concepts of control and the transnationalization of civil society were of paramount importance in the smooth transition from dictatorship to democracy in the 1970s and the subsequant integration of Southern Europe into the European Community in the 1980s.

Business and Democracy promote one another.......2005-05-03
"What we are arguing is not that democracy is the inevitable outcome of successful capitalist development, but that such development is a necessary prerequisite of democracy..... We are also saying that authoritative regimes rarely meet the conditions under which business can optimally flourish." In the book, Business and Democracy, Cohabitation or Contradiction?, edited by Ann Bernstein and Peter L. Berger, this statement is well proven: business and democracy do not work to promote one another. Rather, the externalities/pressures of one are a benefit to the other. The editors pull numerous short articles together to support their thesis and then use examples of several developing or transitioning countries in the last half century. In the short term, business can thrive in an authoritative regime but will inevitably lead to "Crony Capitalism". However, eventually pressures for reform and independence will weaken the state ruling institution. In contrast, democracies have continued to be successful when a free market system was already established. The editors have made an excellent case for the cohabitation of Business and Democracy. Business Associations and the thickening of civil society are in the best interests of democracy and visa versa. It allows for a reduced size of government, eliminates excessive taxes that discourage investment, and creates stability. Government still has control with the ability to take power away from the association, but the alternative would be a large expensive government and "Crony Capitalism." It is in the best interest of all society for government and business to work together. The increase of civil liberties and the standard of living are the externalities we all gain from the cohabitation of Business and Democracy.
This book is a must read for those who wish to better understand the role of business and the development of the third world. I would also recommend this book to anyone who wishes to discourage a capitalist system.

Customer Reviews:
Get started, then move on........2003-06-30
"Cover Letters for Dummies" is a decent introduction to writing the perfect cover letter to land that dream job. You will definitely learn the purpose of cover letter, and how it differs from the resume. Once you get that part, it's time to move on to another book. This book may contain good explanations and theory as to how the hiring process works, but the examples are absolutely useless. Further, the only actual useful information could have been condensed into a one-page summary. The rest of the book is filler. Unless you want to be taken as a fool by potential employers, I suggest that you find another book.
Maybe a little too dummy.......2002-04-10
This is a handy reference especially for those who don't know much about writing cover letters and who haven't ever been to a career counselor. It's also useful for anyone else, though I can't imagine that it's much different from other books on the topic.
The major annoyance I had was with the sample letters that are included, and with some of Joyce Kennedy's suggestions, which seemed more obnoxious than anything. I can see how some employers may find them amusing, but if I were in a human resources department, I would not hire many of the people who wrote these examples.
To be sure, some of the samples are alright, and there is much to learn in the many tips that Kennedy provides. If you're seeking to be a competitive prospective employee, you may find it worthwhile to get this book. I hope, however, that there is another book on cover letters out there with sample letters that are still interesting to read, but more serious and intelligent.
Cover Letters for Dummies.......2001-12-19
I had no idea how I was going to help my friend write a good cover letter until I read your book. The first time I read your book I concentrated on you top ten "do" and "don't do" things for a "red hot cover letter". That list and the examples provided of "cover letters" in your books was a tremendous help.
It is a must book to have for anyone looking to sell themselves to an employer for a job.
A tremendous job hunting resource.......2000-12-07
This is not just a book on cover letters; it's a wealth of knowledge on the entire job-hunting process. Joyce Lain Kennedy has put together a tremendous resource for the current or soon to be job hunter, which is really most of us.
I know people scoff at Dummies books, especially for highly technical subjects, but this book is the perfect format for the vast collection of job-hunting facts, ideas and wisdom in this book. The author does an excellent job of presenting a lot of material in a way that is clear, entertaining and extremely readable.
I highly recommend this book, and liked it so much I went out and bought her other two books, Resumes' and Job Interviews for Dummies, which I will be reviewing as I finish them.
too red-hot!.......1999-11-03
This book is chock full of cutesy icons and useless advice. The author spends far too much time touting her previous book (resumes for dummies) and dispensing annoying catch phrases as opposed to giving solid writing tips. We've recieved letters like those featured in the book and dumped them directly in the trash. Unless you are applying for a sales job at a used car lot, don't bother using the letters in this book.

Customer Reviews:
very helpful on how to approach job interviews.......2005-02-05
Some very helpful tips on how to give a good show. I only wish they had a longer section on suggested answers to common questions.
I love this book, I can't say enough about it!.......2004-12-15
I love this book. It is something I read before every interview, and I am 6 for 6. It does a very good job of giving you an overview of questions to expect during an interview, and also good ways and bad ways to answer those questions. Whether you are preparing for your first interview, or you have been through a million interviews, I think this book is definitely a worthwhile read. I plan to buy a copy of this book for each of my friends who are soon to be in the job search process.
FYI: I am a 20 yo college junior.
I got a job thanks to this book!.......2003-09-22
I was always nervous during my interviews, I did not know what to expect on an interview. After reading this book I feel more confident; it gives you model answers to the questions, professional appearance tips, how to deal with different kind of interviewers, and many more.... I GOT A JOB!!!
Very helpful.......2003-03-18
I have always been terrified of interviews and found this book to be of GREAT help. Highly recommended!
Entertaining!.......2002-06-23
Just as entertaining as the other Dummies books I've read.
Substancial, informative, a good read.
