Book Description
The Worldly Philosophers is a bestselling classic that not only enables us to see more deeply into our history but helps us better understand our own times. In this seventh edition, Robert L. Heilbroner provides a new theme that connects thinkers as diverse as Adam Smith and Karl Marx. The theme is the common focus of their highly varied ideas -- namely, the search to understand how a capitalist society works. It is a focus never more needed than in this age of confusing economic headlines.
In a bold new concluding chapter entitled "The End of the Worldly Philosophy?" Heilbroner reminds us that the word "end" refers to both the purpose and limits of economics. This chapter conveys a concern that today's increasingly "scientific" economics may overlook fundamental social and political issues that are central to economics. Thus, unlike its predecessors, this new edition provides not just an indispensable illumination of our past but a call to action for our future.

I love this book.......2007-10-15
Hi my mom purchased this book for me to read over the summer because it was a requirement for my 12th grade economics class. I really enjoyed reading this book more then I thought I would. Well that's all I have to say since my mom wanted me to write the comment because the book was for my usage.
The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-12
Whenever anyone says to me: I would like to learn something about economics, but where do I start - this is where you start. It is simple, easy, accurate, enjoyable and written for the lay reader. If you want to know more about economics this should be your first challenge. I guarantee after reading this book, you will know more and want to learn more. It could be the best introductory economics book ever. You can trust this guy.
This Classic Remains A Great Read!.......2007-09-10
I read this book 25 years ago, and recently reread parts of it. What a great book! Many of the most prominent living economists have justly heaped praise on Heilbroner's masterpiece. I can only add my hearty agreement.
Excellent compilation of short biographies of major economists.......2007-07-27
Heilbroner (H) does a very good job of providing the beginning ,novice reader in economic history and economic thought a very general summary of the major ideas of the economists he covers. He provides many interesting anecdotal comments, such as Keynes's interest in the size and shape of other people's hands, that are worth the price of purchasing the book. There are, however, some major analytic gaps in H's coverage.I will cover two of these below.
The first major omission occurs on p.68, in the chapter covering Adam Smith,on Smith's view of the role of government in a capitalist economy.Smith spends pp.734-741 of the Wealth of Nations[Modern Library(Cannan)edition] alerting the reader to the existence of a major undepletable, detrimental externality ,with major negative impacts, that resulted from the operation of the Invisible Hand (comparative advantage + division of labor + economic self interest). These negative impacts affect all aspects of the workers' lives-social,political,moral or ethical, intellectual, and martial. It is not just a case of "...the stultifying effect of mass production..." leading to a " ...decline in manly virtues."(Heilbroner,p.68).On pp.9-10 of the WN,Smith discussed the significant role of the worker in providing a continuing series of marginal improvements in the workings of the machinery used in the production process. All such contributions come to a complete stop if the externality problem is not dealt with because the result will be "...the almost complete corruption and degeneracy of the great body of the people".(Smith,p.734).The work force will not be able to make any contribution to the political decision making process of the country.Conflicts will break out both within the family and between families.Smith includes in his solution, which is that general education and religious instruction be provided for all even if they are unable to afford it,the requirement that the workers be taught the basics(reading, writing, and arithmetic) plus geometry and mechanics. The middle class is to also be taught philosophy and science.
The second omission in Heilbroner concerns the discussion of Keynes's GT fiscal policies on pp.274-279.H does not make it clear that Keynes is opposed to cutting income taxes in order to stimulate private consumption spending.Keynes's plan is to seperate the budget into a current and a capital account. The capital account will include borrowed funds(loan expenditure) to finance long run spending on infreastructure projects and public goods that will pay for themselves in the long run.The p.131 quote given by H about the government burying bank notes in abandoned mines for private enterprise to dig up from the GT is misleading.
If I could give 10 stars I would.......2007-07-03
Best book I've read in a long time! I have exams in economics, and usually I read some light "for fun" books during exam times in order to relax. This is one of those books, and I'm learning something!!! Excellent writer!
Product Description
This is the story of those academic scribblers-from Adam Smith through Malthus and Ricardo, Karl Marx, Thorstein Veblen, Lord Keynes himself, to the economists now wrestling with the problems of our contemporary world. Their subject-economics-has been called the dismal science, but their private lives were full of strange and curious events, and the private worlds of ideas they built around themselves make fascinating reading. This is a scholarly book about the thinkers whose ideas about business and society have become the causes for which men work and fight and die.

Worldly Philosophers.......2007-08-26
This book was a required read for my son's senior year in high school. It arrived promptly. Thanks!
A lively read about "the dismal science".......2007-04-25
"Worldly Philosophers" is probably the best, most authoritative title on the development and growth of economic theory. "Worldly Philosophers" is an outgrowth of Heilbroner's 1953 doctoral thesis and it has gone on to sell four million copies, making it the second best selling book on the subject of economics. Heilbroner gives a great overview of the economic process in early societies up until the time of Adam Smith and his revolutionary "The Wealth of Nations." Heilbroner carries the reader onwards as successive economists attempt to make sense of the world around them, introducing the reader to the theories of Ricardo, Malthus, Marx, Veblen, and Keynes, among others. Heilbroner charts the expansion of economic theory in a straightforward linear fashion and shows how these varied economists questioned the theories of those before and postulated their own theories based on how they saw the world.
I hadn't expected "Worldly Philosophers" to be such a lively and enjoyable read, which says a lot about Heilbroner's clarity and caliber of writing. It is far more enjoyable than his later "Making of Economic Society," which borrows liberally from this tome. If you are looking for a concise, well written history of economics, you need look no further than here.

Another winner in this series.......2007-09-11
For a senior citizen who now uses a computer daily for work, hobbies, and teaching after his first 60 years with no experience whatsoever in using computers, many of the tasks are daunting. Without the background computer experience that the younger people grow up with, each new (to me) application is not at all intuitive, and this book enabled me to put together a series of one hour Power Point presentations of 30-60 pictures each in less than a day. This was done using only the book and without outside help. I now have the confidence to use it regularly and receive rave reviews for the clarity of my teaching from young adult people in my class. The pictures with arrows and numbers on the screen are essential to my understanding of the use of the program.

Comprehensive and Valuable PowerPoint Resource.......2004-02-09
I was a fairly experienced PowerPoint user, but Bunzel's book illustrated many of the unrealized possibilities of presentation software. Especially helpful to more advanced users is the in-depth coverage of methods for incorporating movies and sound from various sources. I've been inspired now to transform my talks from blase data dumps into engaging interactive experiences. Overall, excellent coverage of topics for beginning PowerPoint users and those who think they know enough (if not all). A valuable resource which occupies a prominent place in my software library.

In addition to explaining skills and concepts in the context of real work situations, the book also shows how to apply them in presentations. Additionally, the book highlights the little details that frustrate users at all levels as they try to be productive, and workarounds for new and current features that might work better on paper than in real life.

Sams is a great series.......2004-05-17

Another great reference from the "Teach Yourself" series".......2002-06-07
This book is a very concise well organized resource for advanced, fluent and native speakers who wish to improve their business Spanish speaking skills. The book provides ample business vocabulary, phrases and brief grammatical explanations as a reminder of how certain rules function in Spanish (one would already have to have a solid understanding of the grammar). All chapters have practice exercises for immediate application and an answer key is provided at the back of the book. The book is comprised of business scenarios and what I found particularly helpful was that they are realistic and the phrases applied are currently used by all Spanish speaking countries thus eliminating language barriers within the Spanish language. This book will definitely enable you to improve your business Spanish vocabulary and enable you to speak confidently in a professional environment. It's also key to note that it provides basic vocabulary and phrases in the business scenarios however, if you are looking for more extensive vocabulary another reference should be consulted. I recommend this reference for those who need to speak with the correct terminology from time to time in an appropriate business situation in Spanish.
Excellent for contextual learning........2000-08-04
I used these books for my second year of spanish in a Masters degree in international marketing. The first year we did basic spanish and in this year we wanted the language we would need for business purposes. The texts are relevant and contextual, they cover both castillian and south american spanish issues. The tapes cover spanish from both sides of the atlantic which is useful. Furthermore the texts expose you to socio-political issues in the hispanic nations which gives a good basis to conversational spanish when current affairs topics crop up. Knowing the name of the spanish parliament or the title of government ministers etc is very good exposure. Thumbs up from me (I got a good mark in this course so I can't complain).

Great Book!.......2003-04-24
Lynne Strugnell and Micheal Jenkins deserve credit for making a excellent book. This book teaches everything you need to know to communicate in a more business style, but can still be used as a beginner book. I enjoy this book because it includes the dialouge in both kana and romanji, and there are enough exercises to make sure you don't forget what you learned. I also enjoy the way they teach on this book.It doesn't seem to confuse you at all. Excellent book it deserves more than 5 stars. Make sure you stick to this book and finish it, you won't regret it.
I also recommend along with this book is pimsleur japanese programs.

Book Description
For retired steelworkers in Youngstown, Ohio, the label "working class" fits comfortably. Questioning the widely held view that laborers in postwar America have adopted middle-class values, Robert Bruno shows that in this community a blue-collar identity has provided a positive focus for many residents. The son of a Youngstown steelworker, Bruno returned to his hometown seeking to understand the formation of his own working-class consciousness and the place of labor in the larger capitalist society. Drawing on interviews with dozens of former steelworkers and on research in local archives, Bruno explores the culture of the community, including such subjects as relations among co-workers, class antagonism, and attitudes toward authority. He describes how, because workers are often neighbors, the workplace takes on a feeling of neighborhood. He also demonstrates that to understand class consciousness one must look beyond the workplace, in this instance from Youngstown's front porches to its bowling alleys and voting booths. Written with a deeply personal approach, Steelworker Alley is a richly detailed look at workers which reveals the continuing strength of class relationships in America.
Customer Reviews:
A very insightful book........1999-09-29
Having grown up in Youngstown, I can fully appreciate the degree to which the author has captured the spirit of the mills and the working class. Anyone interested in labor studies will find this a book well worth reading.
A Good Read!!!.......1999-08-08
Bruno's first and hopefully not his last!
You don't have to bea steelworker or from Youngstown to enjoy this book. Bruno's Yongstownis recognizable to all no mater where you live.
His portait of his hometown captures his family and neighbors who come alive in this interesting new work. Moreover, he has something to say and hesays it well!
