      Book Description

Big dams built for irrigation, power, water supply, and other purposes were among the most potent symbols of economic development for much of the twentieth century. Of late they have become a lightning rod for challenges to this vision of development as something planned by elites with scant regard for environmental and social consequences—especially for the populations that are displaced as their homelands are flooded. In this book, Sanjeev Khagram traces changes in our ideas of what constitutes appropriate development through the shifting transnational dynamics of big dam construction.

Khagram tells the story of a growing, but contentious, world society that features novel and increasingly efficacious norms of appropriate behavior in such areas as human rights and environmental protection. The transnational coalitions and networks led by nongovernmental groups that espouse such norms may seem weak in comparison with states, corporations, and such international agencies as the World Bank. Yet they became progressively more effective at altering the policies and practices of these historically more powerful actors and organizations from the 1970s on.

Khagram develops these claims in a detailed ethnographic account of the transnational struggles around the Narmada River Valley Dam Projects, a huge complex of thirty large and more than three thousand small dams. He offers further substantiation through a comparative historical analysis of the political economy of big dam projects in India, Brazil, South Africa, and China as well as by examining the changing behavior of international agencies and global companies. The author concludes with a discussion of the World Commission on Dams, an innovative attempt in the late 1990s to generate new norms among conflicting stakeholders.

            Book Description

Standard equilibrium economic models focus on interdependencies. In Out of Equilibrium, Amendola and Gaffard develop a theory also dealing with interdependencies, but based on disequilibria, which take the form of feedback mechanisms over time. The way in which these disequilibria interact sequentially determines the evolution path of an economy. As a result, different processes may be associated with any kind of original shock. Whereas in equilibrium models these processes are determined by the 'fundamentals' of the economy, here the outcome is heavily influenced by the processes themselves, the sequential decisions taken, and policies followed. The model proposed in this book is a heuristic tool that makes it possible to explore these `disequilibria'. By using it, economic phenomena and policy recommendations appear entirely different, and in most cases the interpretations made are diametrically opposite to those advocated by the dominant equilibrium theory, thus giving a new perspective on the recent past of the Western economies.

              Description:
We introduce the notion of a ''critical strategy profile'' under approval voting (AV), which facilitates the identification of all possible outcomes that can occur under AV. Included among AV outcomes are those given by scoring rules, single transferable vote, the majoritarian compromise, Condorcet systems, and others as well. Under each of these systems, a Condorcet winner may be upset through manipulation by individual voters or coalitions of voters, whereas AV ensures the election of a Condorcet winner as a strong Nash equilibrium wherein voters use sincere strategies. To be sure, AV may also elect Condorcet losers and other lesser candidates, sometimes in equilibrium. This multiplicity of (equilibrium) outcomes is the product of a social-choice framework that is more general than the standard preference-based one. From a normative perspective, we argue that voter judgments about candidate acceptability should take precedence over the usual social-choice criteria, such as electing a Condorcet or Borda winner.

                Description:
User equilibrium is a central concept for studying transportation networks, and one can view it as the result of a dynamical process of drivers' route choice behavior. In this paper, based on a definition of O-D first-in-first-out violation, we propose a new dynamical system model of the route choice behavior at the aggregate, route level for both static and dynamic transportation networks. An equilibrium of such a dynamical system can be a user equilibrium or a partial user equilibrium. We prove that, for static, symmetric traffic assignment problem with fixed or variable demand, only user equilibria are stable for the dynamical system, and the objective function in the mathematical programming formulation [Beckmann, M., McGuire, C.B., Winsten, C.B., 1956. Studies in the Economics of Transportation. Yale University Press, New Haven, Connecticut, also published as Rand-RM-1488-PR, Rand Corporation, Santa Monica, CA, May 12, 1955.] can be considered as the potential energy of the dynamical system. We then present an Euler-based perturbation method for finding user equilibrium and solve two examples for both static and dynamic traffic assignment problems. This new model is simple in form and could be applied to analyze other properties of transportation networks.

                  Description:
Liquid-liquid phase equilibrium is mainly a result of intermolecular forces. Therefore hydroxylic compounds very often show a good affinity with water, due to hydrogen bonding. Consequently the ionic forces taking place when salt is added to an aqueous solution may affect this phase equilibrium. This is the main scope of this study, considering this salt effect. The effect of the addition of calcium chloride (CaCl"2) on the liquid-liquid equilibrium data of the binary system water-acetone has been studied experimentally at 23^oC, for different salt weight percentages of 5, 10, 15 and 20. A two- phase region has been created, decreasing the acetone solubility in water. From this study it can be concluded that 'salting-out' takes place with the presence of calcium chloride.

                    Description:
This paper reports data for coordination game experiments with random matching. The experimental design is based on changes in an effort-cost parameter, which do not alter the set of Nash equilibria nor do they alter the predictions of adjustment theories based on imitation or best response dynamics. As expected, however, increasing the effort cost lowers effort levels. Maximization of a stochastic potential function, a concept that generalizes risk dominance to continuous games, predicts this reduction in efforts. An error parameter estimated from initial two-person, minimum-effort games is used to predict behavior in other three-person coordination games.

                        Book Description

The intersection of probability and physics has been a rich and explosive area of growth in the past two decades, specifically covering such subjects as percolation theory, random walks, interacting particle systems, and various topics related to statistical mechanics. In the last several years, substantial progress has been made in a number of directions: fluctuations of 2-dimensional growth processes, Wulf constructions in higher dimensions for percolation, Potts and Ising models, classification of random walks in random environments, the introduction of the stochastic Loewner equation, the rigorous proof of intersection exponents for planar Brownian motion, and finally the proof of conformal invariance for critical percolation on the triangular lattice. This volume consists of a collection of invited articles, written by some of the most distinguished probabilists in the above-mentioned areas, most of whom were personally responsible for advances in the various subfields of probability. All of the articles are an outgrowth of the Fourth Brazilian School of Probability, held in Mambucaba, Brazil, August 2000. Contributors: K. Alexander * J.M. Azaïs * J. van den Berg * T. Book Description

The Andy Griffith Show continues to have a huge worldwide following. While many factors contribute to the show's ongoing popularity, many fans continue to point to the basic moral principles upheld by each and every episode. The Way Back to Mayberry takes an irresistible look at these moral themes and values promoted by the show and examines them in light of biblical truth. Each episode is described, and then the message of each show is looked at in detail, along with a biblical example of the theme, and an application for our lives today. This heart-warming book wanders back to a place where life seemed simpler and attention was paid to the little things.

Heartwarming book on the wonderful lessons from Mayberry. Author presents many personal stories and reflections from the classic TV show - a very satisfying read. No Andy Griffith collection is complete without this volume!

5 out of 5 stars New Look at an Old Show.......2003-04-19

Being a huge Andy Griffith fan, I picked this book up the other day. Don't know what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised. Any Andy fan can tell you that the show was full of good, heart-warming stories, but I had never thought of the show in the terms presented by the author. To clarify, this book is not filled with epsisode trivia, or preachy sermon topics. However, it does present unique thoughts and observations regarding the timeless themes of Mayberry from a personal perspective. In almost every chapter, the author relates a personal story that will make you laugh, cry, or just reflect on simpler pace of life - kind of like The Andy Griffith Show used to do! If you have even a casual appreciation of the "Old Griffith Show", you will enjoy this book.

If you're a fan of Goober and the Mayberrians you will like this book. It will have a special place in your bookshelves. When at University of Alabama I met George Lindsey, who went to school at UOA. To me, Goob made the show! Take it from Sharon a longtime Goober fan.

4 out of 5 stars The Gospel According To Andy.......2001-06-15

This is a feel-good approach to a TV phenomenon that is still delighting audiences thirty years later. Fann has hit on one of the reasons for the show's success: each episode contains moral truths and spiritual guidelines intricately woven into the storyline, and these are just as applicable to today's sophisticated, special effects-bombarded viewers as they were to the technicolor-challenged children of the sixties. Fann devotes a separate chapter to thirty of his favorite episodes. He gives a brief synopsis of the events, and then he presents parallel biblical principles that he feels are being showcased. He often peppers his writing with anecdotes from his own experience, and many of these have a "Chicken Soup" kind of approach. Because each chapter is self-sufficient, the book can be read incrementally--a chapter at a time, or it can be enjoyed in its entirety for those who have larger blocks of leisure time available. Each chapter begins with a correlating verse from scripture. For those teaching Andy Griffith Bible studies, this book is a wonderful companion for use in lesson preparation.

The premise of this book is great. However, it was poorly done. Many of the references make incorrect references to the show and are simply wrong (e.g., quotes attributed to the wrong people, references to story lines that really didn't happen that way, etc.). I started keeping track of these errors and got so disgusted I simply quit reading.

1 out of 5 stars It Ain't Worth the Pain.......1999-10-19

The concept for this book is excellent. The Andy Griffith Show is full of life lessons to be drawn and shared. The content of the book, however, was miles short of Mayberry. Many of the "lessons" lacked a clear connection to an episode, leaving me to figure it out for myself. To quote Briscoe Darling, this book "ain't worth the pain."

4 out of 5 stars Review of Life Lessons from Mayberry........1999-07-24

The book "Life Lessons from Mayberry" is an excellent choice for any fan of the Andy Griffith Show. This book gives direct quotes from the show and also sums up the episode that the quote originated from. It also contains pages of a dialogue between two characters that, just like the quotes, give a lesson to learn from. I suggest this book to any reader who : 1) enjoys Andy Griffith shows & 2) needs any direction or support in their life. Good Reading to ya!
