    Book Description

A physician to Louis XV, Francois Quesnay founded an 18th century French school of thinkers, the Physiocrats, who evolved the first complete system of economics. Central to their theory was the belief that absolute freedom of trade is essential to guarantee the most beneficial operation of economic law. The Economical Table (1758) is Quesnay's most important work.

                          Description:
Cognitive work analysis (CWA) is gaining momentum as an approach for the analysis, design, and evaluation of complex sociotechnical systems. The majority of applications of CWA have focussed on interface design but in this paper we demonstrate that CWA can also be used for a variety of other applications. These applications include the use of CWA to: identify training needs and training-system requirements; evaluate alternative system design proposals; develop team designs; and identify training strategies for managing human error. By discussing how CWA has been employed in these areas for the Australian Department of Defence, this paper demonstrates that CWA can consistently produce feasible and useful outcomes on industry projects for applications other than interface design. Relevance to Industry: This paper demonstrates the application of CWA to a variety of industry projects for analysing training needs and training-system requirements, evaluating alternative system design proposals, developing team designs, and identifying training strategies to manage human error.

                            Description:
Healthcare today often relies on complex technical equipment. This increases the importance of usability as a selection criterion when hospitals purchase new equipment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of cognitive engineering methods as tools to incorporate the usability aspect in the selection process. Users' questionnaires (UQ) and two cognitive engineering methods, cognitive walkthrough (CW) and usability tests (UT), were used to evaluate the usability of three patient monitoring systems. UQ showed one system was regarded as a major improvement over present systems. CW identified a number of potential problems with the patient monitoring systems. UT showed that the predicted problems from the CW also were real problems for some users. Cognitive engineering methods are useful for evaluating the usability of medical equipment in a clinical environment. CW is a suitable method to evaluate medical devices with menu systems. UT are useful for evaluating handling characteristics but should be performed after the clinical trial, which means that the clinical trial needs to be extended in time. Relevance to industry: Technology plays an important role in modern healthcare, making healthcare increasingly complex. There is a need for methods to evaluate the usability of medical technology when new technology is selected and purchased at hospitals.

                              Description:
As more organizations rely on computer-based training, greater emphasis should be placed on useful feedback. In this study, 36 trainees, mostly dental students, and 36 medically untrained participants engaged in a simulated diagnostic task consisting of 50 trials. Participants received cognitive feedback (CFB) based on Brunswik's Lens Model, a decision framework useful for measuring differences between participant decision strategies and the optimal strategy given the statistical structure of the task environment. Performance and consistency initially declined with the introduction of integrated feedback, but recovered after some experience with interpreting the detailed feedback. Overall, medically trained participants performed better with feedback in the form of task information. However, the integration of CFB information into the display allowed untrained participants to perform at similar levels to trainee participants. The impact of different ecological predictability levels and implications for future research are also discussed.

                                  Description:
The strict safety requirements and the confidential character of the development process of medical equipment call for suitable theory-based usability evaluation methods to be used by in-house cognitive engineering experts at medical companies. In this study, the Cognitive Walkthrough (CW) method was employed to evaluate two types of graphical user interface (GUI) prototypes of dialysis machines: a haemodialysis machine for hospital use by professional nurses, and a peritoneal dialysis machine for home use by patients as the main users. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether different user background settings could affect the CW results when evaluating the GUI of computer-based medical machines. The evaluation results showed that different user background settings can affect the CW results in the evaluation. When more factors were included in the user background setting, a wider range of usability problems was found. User background setting is an important issue to take into account in further work with the development of the CW method for medical equipment. The methodological guidance and conclusions from the present exploratory case study are transferable to similar situations for studies in other fields. Relevance to industry: This paper contributes to the improvement of a usability evaluation method, the Cognitive Walkthrough (CW) method, for enabling designers of medical equipment and usability engineers to identify and specify more usability problems when evaluating interface prototypes for new medical equipment in the early design stage.

                                    Description:
Information overload has become a critical challenge within military operations. However, the problem is not so much one of too much information but of abundant information that is poorly organized and poorly represented. Here I report the development of a prototype functional workspace to resolve this issue. Development proceeded through a design sequence of cognitive analysis, knowledge representation and workspace design. The cognitive analysis focused on the specific information needed for analysis of insurgency operations. Abstraction-Decomposition matrices from the framework of Cognitive Work Analysis were used as design artifacts to represent knowledge acquired during the cognitive analysis. Additional design guidance related to workspace layout and format was drawn from operational and scientific literature. The workspace was structured in terms of dimensions of functional abstraction and functional decomposition; dimensions that are thought to characterize the fundamental structure of cognitive work. In this paper, I describe the analysis and how its products were integrated with insights drawn from operational and scientific literature to develop the prototype workspace. Relevance to Industry: Visualization is often proposed as a solution to the challenges of cognitively intensive, information-rich work. This paper outlines principles and analytic procedures that can be used to develop a visualization for cognitive work.

                                      Description:
This study investigates the cognitive strategies of 80 participants as they engaged in two researcher-defined tasks and two participant-defined information-seeking tasks using the WWW. Each researcher-defined task and participant-defined task was further divided into a directed search task and a general-purpose browsing task. On the basis of retrospective verbal protocols, log-file data and observations, 12 cognitive search strategies were identified and explained. The differences in cognitive search strategy choice between researcher-defined and participant-defined tasks and between directed search and general-purpose tasks were examined using correspondence analysis. These cognitive search strategies were compared to earlier investigations of search strategies on the WWW. Relevance to industry: Describing information-seeking behaviours and cognitive search strategies in detail provides website developers and search engine developers with valuable insights into how users seek (and find) information of value to them. Using this information, website developers might gain some knowledge as to how to best represent the content and navigational properties of websites. Search engine developers might wish to make the search and collection strategies more transparent to users. There are also design implications for the designers of web browsers.

                                          Description:
With increased automation and supervisory control, the physical content of jobs has decreased while cognitive workload has increased. The cardiovascular system responds to both physical and cognitive stresses, and their combination, by causing an increase in both heart rate (HR) and blood pressure. The increase in HR and blood pressure cause an increase in myocardial contractility, which results in an increase in myocardial oxygen consumption (MV"O"""2). The rate-pressure product (RPP), given by the product of HR and systolic blood pressure, is a very reliable indirect measure of MV"O"""2. With this in mind, an experiment was conducted on 12 able-bodied male students from the University population. Subjects were required to perform three cognitive tasks (Stroop Incongruent Color-Word Test, simulated public speaking, and calculating task) under two physical conditions (riding a Schwinn Airdyne at a constant speed of 1/3 of their estimated maximum HR, and seated at rest on the Schwinn Airdyne). HR and blood pressure were monitored throughout the testing period. Results of the analysis of the randomized block design indicated that both cognitive and physical tasks had a significant effect on RPP. Additionally, the findings from this study indicated that RPP can be used as an objective measure to separate the components of cognitive workload and cognitive stress in combined tasks. Relevance to industry: Rate-pressure product may be used as a measure of occupational workload, both cognitive and physical. It may be possible to use RPP measures to set limits on workloads and for establishing work allowance.

                                            Description:
The aim of this paper is to examine the cognitive processes through which operators make decisions when dealing with microincidents during their actual work, and to determine whether they use a naturalistic or normative decision making strategy. That is, do they try to recognize a microincident as familiar and base decisions on pattern recognition, tacit knowledge, or condition-action rules (naturalistic), or do they need to concurrently compare and contrast options, before selecting the best possible according standard operating procedures (normative)? The method employed for data collection was a cognitive task analysis (CTA) based on operators' activities. The main finding of this research was that decision making is primarily based on naturalistic strategies. These findings contrast the normative behavior prescribed by the organization's work design and their standards of competency for training and evaluation operators work. Relevance to industry: This study presents a situated method to describe how sharp end operators make decisions during microincidents that occurs in normal operation, emphasizing how the sociotechnical environment affects their cognitive strategies, which is one of the basic steps for an organization that wants to enhance the safety culture.

                                            Book Description

Why have Americans, who by a clear majority approve of unions, stopped joining them in greater numbers than ever before? This book answers that question by comparing the American experience with that of Canada, where approval for unions is significantly lower than in the United States, but where since the mid-1960s, workers have joined organized labor to a much greater extent. Given that the two countries are outwardly so similar, what explains this paradox? This book provides a detailed comparative analysis of both countries using, among other things, a unique survey conducted in the United States and Canada by the Ipsos Reid polling group.

The authors discover that the reluctance of employees in the United States to join unions, compared with those in Canada, is rooted less in their attitudes toward unions, and more in the former country's deep-seated tradition of individualism and laissez-faire economic values." Canada has a more statist, social democratic tradition, which is in turn attributable to its Tory and European conservative lineage. Canadian values are therefore more supportive of unionism, making unions more powerful in the northern country and paradoxically lowering public approval of unions. This is less true in the United States, where unions exert less of an influence over politics and the economy.

The book presents a challenging hypothesis that some may not agree with or like: that deep seated national values matter and can explain why Americans, despite appearing more union friendly in survey approval ratings, have much lower union density than Canadians. The argument is not a new one, Lipset himself made the argument many years ago, but what is novel his how the seeming contradictory data regarding opinion polls actually can be used by the authors to show that Americans are not so easily dislodged from their deep values of freedom. Canadians, on the other hand, have less fear of equality or government involvement, and it this that translates into laws and behaviour (as opposed to attitudes) that are more union friendly north of the border. I liked this book, but it demands patience to read through all the data. If I was a student studying labour markets or industrial relations it would be invaluable.

1 out of 5 stars how to build a straw man.......2005-02-21

Lipset et al. assert facts, provide statistical evidence, and use quantitative methods to prove their point without helping us understand why Americans do not join unions. The book is simplistic, and rehashes old arguments. The writers fail to use historical and comparative analysis of the divergent tracks and the U.S. and Canada have in labor relations. The statistical analysis does not substantiate the problemmatic that U.S. workers are more or less militant than Canadians. Not to be taken seriously THE PARADOX OF AMERICAN UNIONISM is nothing more than an ideological screed for intellectuals with lots of time on their hands but little to say of substance.
