          With full-service nationwide banking on the verge of becoming a reality in the U.S., here is a thoughtful analysis of how it emerged and what its effects will be. Dr. Rose is frankly skeptical. He sees advantages but he also predicts significant disadvantages, mainly in the form of possibly higher fees and reduced personal attention for consumers of banking services. His book provides the best summary available of the research findings to date and one of the best summaries of new federal interstate banking rules enacted by Congress and signed into law in 1994. This is an important book not only for executives engaged in government-relations work throughout the financial services industry, and for those engaged in marketing and strategic planning, but also for public policy people in the private and public sectors. Dr. Rose opens his book with an overview of the trend in U.S. banking towards a consolidated banking system similar to those in other industrialized nations, particularly Canada, Great Britain, and Germany. He identifies causes of this movement toward consolidation, attributable to governmental interventions and the exigencies of the private sector marketplace. He reviews the long history of federal and state restrictions against interstate banking and then explains how laws passed in the 1990s are permitting giant nationwide banking companies to emerge. What does this mean for the public, bankers, and investors? Less than what people think and have hoped for. Dr. Rose warns that many of the benefits expected from interstate banking will probably be nonexistent or at best meager. His book will certainly prove to be a vital resource for anyone involved in the banking industry and for those who influence it.

          The majority of this book is full of puzzles that you can do with toothpicks...take four toothpicks and make a square then move two of them to make something else. The last part of the book has word/logic problems like the man with the boat trying to move the goat, the cabbage and the wolf to the other side. (Of course the problem is the goat will eat the cabbage, and the wolf will eat the goat, so how will he do it?!?) The first part is good for spacial reasoning--getting kids to recognize and find alternative ways of looking at the problem. It will be a good book for younger kids, but it's also something you can do with older kids because it's the challenge that catches their attention. I've even pulled in logical-thinking should-be-doing-something-else adults for quite some time with these puzzles!

          I am a beginner and I found this book fun. Each year I carve a different one for my daughters. They are just the right size for a shelf or to hang on the tree. I found it very easy to follow.

          I have been carving Santas for some time now and have seen most books on the subject. I am really impressed with the unique technique employed in the book. This is great for beginners because it lays out a methodical approach to carving. Best of all, you don't need a bandsaw to make a cutout....just a block of wood and a few basic carving knives. This book is excellent because it uses plenty of photographs to teach--you could learn just by looking at the pictures. I enjoy this book because it made me realize how rewarding it is to start with a block of wood and a knife and end up with a great carving rather than cut out a rough shape with the bandsaw and then carve. This is the book to buy if you want to learn to carve or learn a more efficient carving method. Pay no attention to the few who rate it low. I can't fathom how they can rate it low......they need to realize that this is an art and it takes patience and focus to learn. They must have been carving with the wrong end of the knife.

          This is an excellent book and I am thoroughly enjoying each of the projects. Usually carving books don't give good painting details, but this one does. Also, most of the books I have used in the past tend to have all the projects look much the same. I'm amazed at the individuality of each of the 15 projects.

          One thing that is unique in this carving book is how the patterns are drawn. You need to see the patterns like a draftsman design. But I found this perspective very helpful in developing the carvings.

          For those who are absolute beginners in Santa carving, I'd suggest the Santa Carving book by Ron Ransom.

          This book has details that are complete and thorough enough to accomplish a project even if you are a beginning carver. If you have experience, it provides good direction for advancing your skills. An excellent choice for Santa carving.

          These brain twisters offer something all ages can enjoy doing alone or together.

          Yeah, I know, we buy this for the kids, but then we ourselves end up just as happy to solve the puzzles--kinda like the ol' story of the model train set that the father loves to set up!

          These are great brain exercises. While you're finding patterns and working with visual spatial cues, you're also building connections in the brain, making neurodevelopmental connections based on the perceptual discrimination, etc. required.

          These are also great socializing ice-breakers--when you or your kids learn a few, all you need is a few toothpicks or the like, and you've got puzzles in mind that you can set up anywhere.

          I've used the first volume with my after-school class and the kids really enjoy these. The book is designed for a parent or teacher to set up the games and it is not a workbook that the kids can use alone - a plus if you are looking to spend some quality time with your child. The stick games help kids develop visual and conceptuial skills in a fun and clever way.

            I love this little book of knots. I am not a knot expert but this book has many different types of knots for all the various occasions that I need them for. A few of my favorites are the bowline (creates non-slipping loop), Sheet-bend (ties two ropes together even if they are different sizes), and Half-hitch (hitches a rope to a pole). It's got quite a few different types of knots listed in easy to follow illustrations and directions. Cool!
