Customer Reviews:
Just a text book.......2007-01-09
Hard to understand the content of the book. The basic meaning is not difficult. But the way the book descripts the theories/meanings is really hard to understand.
Just a textbook.
Good textbook.......2003-02-12
We were required to buy this textbook for our Engineering Economics class at UT-Austin. I found this book helpful as an introduction to business. It gave us quite a number of examples and review questions to help us understand the major concepts. Even though the book may have contained a little too much information, I really liked it since I learnt a lot from it.
Typos and poor writing make this a frustrating book.......1999-05-10
I was subjected to this book as a requirment for an Engineering Management masters degree course. I've seen a lot of textbooks in 7 years of college, but this one has got to be the most frustrating! There are MANY typos, not just mispellings - but problems done incorrectly. Also, many of the chapters are taken from other text, so there's not a good flow to the book. You'll probably only buy this book as a requirement for a class, but beware!!!

The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable
ASIN: 0471979570 |
Book Description
Risk Management and Analysis Volume 1 Measuring and Modelling Financial Risk Edited by Carol Alexander In the two years since the publication of The Handbook of Risk Management and Analysis interest and the practice of management, modelling and control of financial risks has grown enormously. The author/editor has produced two stand-alone or companion volumes. Only one third of the original material remains. Measuring and Modelling Financial Risk has been structured in four parts: the first three chapters survey standard approaches to measuring and modelling financial risk from the risk manager perspective, Chapters 4 and 5 are aimed primarily at quantitative risk analysts whose job it is to put the systems in place. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss important issues in IT and systems design, and the last two chapters cover pricing and risk management of credit-risky products. Leading figures in the field contribute: Michel Crouhy, Dan Galai and Robert Mark, Stan Beckers, Thomas Wilson, Mark Broadie and Paul Glasserman, Nigel Webb, Ron Dembo, Robert Jarrow and Stuart Turnbull, and Lee Wakeman. "Risk management is becoming an increasingly important activity for financial institutions, fund managers, and corporate treasurers. It used to be the case that the brightest 'quants' were used to design and value ever-more-exotic derivatives. Now increasingly they are finding that their talents can best be put to work in risk management. In this volume Carol Alexander has gathered together nine articles concerned with different aspects of risk management and analysis. The topics covered include the regulatory framework, volatility and correlation models, value at risk, and credit risk. The book will provide a valuable source of reference material for both market participants and students." John Hull, August 1998
Customer Reviews:
Good Coverage.......2000-03-24
This book covers the topic very well. It is clear and concise. Useful for anyone who wants an overview of risk management concepts. But if you are like me who understands better with lots of numbers and examples, this is not it.
Financial Models Using Simulation and Optimaization.......1999-12-17
A good book to tell you methodical risk analysis in the area of fincance and marketing. If more interpretaions of analysis results written there, I would have rated it as "5" stars.

Risk Management and Analysis, Measuring and Modelling Financial Risk (Wiley Series in Financial Engineering)
ASIN: 0471979597 |
Book Description
The author/editor has produced two stand-alone or companion volumes. Only one third of the original material remains.
New Markets and Products begins with two chapters on emerging markets. The book then goes on to cover markets and products of increasing complexity: standard equity and interest rate derivatives, exotic options, swap (and swaptions), volatility trading and finally credit derivatives.
The contributors are all acknowledged experts in their fields: Michael Howell, Mark Fox, Ian King, Chris Rogers, Andrew Street, Riccardo Rebonato, Edmond Levy, Bryan Thomas, Vincent Lacoste, Desmond Fitzgerald and Blythe Masters.
New Markets and Products will be an essential reference tool for risk managers, institutional investors, fund managers, bankers, corporate treasurers and financial consultants.
"In this volume Carol Alexander has gathered together ten articles that are concerned with important recent developments in financial markets. Two of the articles are concerned with emerging markets. They explore the reasons for their growth and the nature of the investment opportunities available. The remaining eight articles are concerned with derivatives. There are chapters on equity derivatives, interest rate derivatives, exotic options, volatility trading, and credit derivatives. The final chapter on credit derivatives is particularly timely. This market is in the process of transforming the way banks manage credit risk. I have seen no other discussion of the market as comprehensive and useful as that provided by Blythe Masters.
Market participants and students alike will find much useful and thought-provoking information in this volume."
- John Hull, August 1998
Customer Reviews:
A little dated but a great reference.......2005-04-02
The articles presented in this book definitely provide a good foundation of concepts required for FRM and Financial Markets.
Excellent content, but misleading title........2001-10-11
This book is a continuation of volume 1 - being that it is purely focused on financial markets and financial products. I was looking for a book on managing risk surrounding the development of new products (i.e. goods) and services for the market place. These issues are VERY different than those surrounding financial products in a nearly efficient market. I'll keep the book for the excellent content, but beware - it's probably not what you might expect!
Great Collection of Papers.......1997-07-24
The chapters on Interest Rate Option Models (Riccardo Rebonato) and Calculating Risk Capital (Thomas Wilson) are great critical surveys on their respective topic

From the author: Two multicriteria decision methodologies applied to evaluating capital investments are the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Non-Traditional Capital Investment Criteria (NCIC) model. In this paper we demonstrate that a mathematical relationship exists between these two models. In particular, a data set obtained by one method can be mapped into an equivalent data set obtained using the other method. It is suggested that this offers an opportunity of empirically assessing decision makers' judgmental capabilities under varying data collection methods. An example problem illustrates the manner in which such comparisons can be made.

From the author: Sensitivity analysis of capital investments can be effectively carried out by employing a metamodel approach and experimental designs. Although polynomial regression metamodels are popular and straightforward, they do not consider spatial relationships among the data. Dual kriging is an estimation technique that allows the incorporation of spatial correlation into the interpolation or estimation process and has been used primarily in geophysical statistical analysis. This article investigates the dual kriging approach as an alternative technique to polynomial regression and artificial neural networks for metamodel analysis of capital investments. It is observed that dual kriging shows potential in performing sensitivity analysis as its accuracy is as good as, or better than, other techniques, and, while model building and interpretation is more complicated than that of polynomial regression, it is significantly more straightforward than that of neural networks. Furthermore, this is the first known work of using kriging in the field of engineering economics; there may be other useful applications such as in cost estimation.

Leading from the Heart, Choosing courage over fear in the workplace
ASIN: 0750699094 |
Book Description
The dramatic effects of downsizing, mergers, and reengineering have created a climate of fear in the workplace, fears that generally go unacknowledged. The Alchemy of Fear teaches us how to accept our emotions in order to become empowered and to take back our power over these fears. Our emotions are rich with information which could make our organizations run effectively, while freeing creativity, energy, and joy into our workplaces.
The Alchemy of Fear is a handbook for action. Drawn from the author's extensive experience, it examines workplace fear, what emotional competence looks like at work, how we handle fears at work, and the love and energy that result when we do these things. Nothing improves a group's effectiveness or their spirit more quickly than changing the relationship members have with fear.
Kay Gilley brings nearly 30 years experience working in general and human resource management to her current work as a leadership and organizational development consultant, specializing in guiding the development of leaders and what she calls "intentional organizations."
· Increased effectiveness by learning to work with fear
· Empowerment through regaining the power of love
· Emotional competence in the workplace
Customer Reviews:
New Magic for the New Organization.......2000-01-12
Kay Gilley has transformed my ideas about love and fear in the workplace. In "Alchemy of Fear", it became clear to me that in most workplaces, the foundations on which services and attitudes are built are primarily fear-based and serve the corporate structure rather than the human heart. Our programming demands that, as experts and successful companies, we know all the "right" answers and be able to spit them out cleanly and efficiently in order to maintain our status in this culture. The fear of "not knowing" blocks creativity and closes our minds to a diversity of options. Facing this fear and the resulting chaos this unleashes, and transforming them into energy which holds us in "not-knowing", creates opportunity for amazing growth when combined with clear and soulful intent. This book is required reading for all corporate alchemists who want to practice the new magic of success.
Desire to grow spiritually/personally? Read this book!.......1999-06-11
I have been stagnent in my life for years. I felt trapped by circumstance. I blamed life and everyone in it for my feeling of being unfullfilled. After reading Ms. Gilley's book I realized that I was afraid, afraid to step out of being who my family thought I was and into the person I knew I was. Ms. Gilley may have written this book for the business world but I feel like she wrote is just for me. It spoke volumns to me and as I followed the path Ms. Gilley laid out my world started changing for the better. I smile and laugh now and the unhappy person that I once was is gone. Bless you Ms. Gilley and God for giving you the words!
Open heart, open-ended possibilities.......1999-05-16
Kay Gilley has done it again. She has cut to the bone of the corporate malaise and shown us how to lead by inspiration and intrinsic rewards, a far cry from the traditional approach to management. If we think of corporate culture as a collective hallucination that is generally subscribed to by employees, then here's a formula for waking up to a more functional reality. We can not only do better business, but lead better lives as well. Isn't that why we work in the first place? If you work for a company, buy this book. It will help you make it a healthier place. If you can't change the culture of the company you work for, you may find yourself thinking about finding a more human place to work. If you run a company, it will likely change how you think about and do leadership. Kay is one of our most valuable business thinkers and has the academic credentials and practical experience to back it up. Buy this book now. You'll be glad you did.
Not just for business but also personal growth........1999-04-23
THE ALCHEMY OF FEAR although oriented toward business was invaluable to my personal growth. It showed me that I was hiding in my little world out of fear of failure of new challenges. It showed me how to use & face my fears and to succeed getting my career and personal life back on track. This is definitely a thought provoking good read.
Shed your fears and awaken to your Personal Power.......1999-04-21
Kay Gilley is living her message by demonstrating the courage to take on one of business world's most unmentionable subjects: the pervasive climate of fear and its devastating consequences to individual lives and group performance. Companies have relied on fear to motivate and control emplyees for so long that most people are unaware that this is the case. And that, says Gilley, is the problem.
The author provides practical, personal advice on how we can awaken from our trance states and provides a rich description of the new beliefs and behaviors that we can adopt. The end result, Gilley maintains, is a more rewarding life for individuals and dramatic increases in performance for organizations.
Buy this book, and change yourself so that you can lead the life you were born to live. Then buy this book and use your new found courage to deliver a copy to your boss and co-workers. Imagine a fear-free workplace... it will be worth it!
