Great Guide.......2006-08-06
"The Ernst & Young Guide to Total Cost Management" is a user friendly book that is understandable to all managers, whether or not they have a financial background.
Any manager with responsibility for some significant cost area needs to understand the costs of the various activities and processes in their sections, departments or divisions. This will enable them to make informed and effective decisions pertaining to their areas of responsibility. These include whether or not to outsource, pricing decisions, investment and general control and monitoring of their business.
The current highly competitive operating environment for most businesses require that organisations cut all unnecessary costs and to simplify the business model. All this requires a clear understanding of the costs and how to achieve efficiencies.
This is a well written book in simple and easy to follow manner, making it understandable to a wide readership.
Practical, and easy to read..........2006-04-16
The book is well written, and touches on a topic that is relevant even today - over a decade later than the book's first publishing.
It would serve the reader well to get some understanding of how products and services are costed in the traditional way - that can help build understanding which comes in handy when you read how Activity Based Costing is different - which is what the book proposes.
It is hard to imagine how much projects / proposals / businesses must have suffered due to archiac accounting methods - the authors have definitely made a good attempt to open the reader's eyes.
Certain portions contained in the book were originally thought of by others (Cost of Quality) and I did not see due credit being given for the same.
Read, understand, and apply...who knows your company may be on life support, and this may be the solution...
Outstanding step by step guide for adding value through TCM.......2004-07-09
This book serves as an outstanding guide for adding value to an organizatoin through total cost management and should definitely be on the bookshelf of every CFO and Controller. I've referred to this book several times since I purchased it several years ago.

Book Description
The study traces the economic and demographic history of a corner of China's southeast coast from the third to the thirteenth centuries, looking at the relationship between changes in the agrarian and urban economies of the area and their connections to the expanding role of domestic and foreign trade. It provides a previously unexplored perspective on the role of commercialized production and trade in a regional economy in the premodern era and demonstrates that trade was able to drive change in a premodern economy in a way that has not generally been recognized.

Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Extraordinary Book of Facts: And Bizarre Information (Bathroom Readers).......2007-05-09
I'm so glad I bought this book. It's the perfect book to read while on the can.
Great Book.......2007-04-06
This is a great bathroom book! I have learned so much from my trips to the bathroom now. Everyone that comes over and has to use my bathroom now has to know where to find this book because they have to have it. It's great for all that "everything you ever needed to know but never thought about" kind of stuff.
LOVE IT!!.......2007-04-02
Ive read this book front to back; I love facts.
It's a tad nerdy, but if you like to know things that are obscure that make great for awkward silence or everyday conversation starters, this book is for you.
Uncle John's Bathroom REader.......2007-03-09
We have a few of these series and really enjoy the reading while sitting in the bathroom. It is amazing what you can learn. I am very anxious to purchase the one on National Parks. Great series of reading.
Love the Bathroom Readers!.......2007-02-13
They're all great, pack crammed full of mostly useless information! Great Buy!

A Different Sort of Travel Guide: Fascinating Park Trivia.......2007-05-19
This latest Uncle John publication proclaims on its back cover "It's time to hit the Trail!" Hit the history books is more like it. This wonderful little volume is full of fascinating trivia about the national parks and monuments found in the US and Canada. Each chapter is brief enough to be read during a single trip to the throne room of your house, and for the most part the prose is enjoyable enough to keep you coming back. Favorite stories for me were "The Great Pig War" in which the US and England nearly managed to go to war over a dead pig (San Juan Island National Historic Park) and the Mojave National Preserve's "lonely phonebooth."
For the most part the history and folklore seemed accurate enough, though the authors did slip a little when they wrote that Ansel Adams had saved King's Canyon with pictures of its Giant Sequoia Grove. There is no such grove in King's Canyon proper. General Grant Grove is now administered as a part of King's Canyon National Park, but it has been protected since 1890. In any event, King's Canyon was preserved because it so closely resembled Yosemite. On the other hand, virtually every other element of the book is accurate. Indeed, this is one of the few sources I have ever read that correctly notes Hot Springs Arkansas is the oldest National Park, dating back to 1835, long before the Yosemite Grant or the creation of Yellowstone National Park.
So, by all means get this rather unusual travel guide. It probably won't help much with actual trip planning, but it is nice for whiling away the time between trips: especially that portion of the time when you are otherwise preoccupied.
Uncle John is still producing.......2007-05-06
Interesting tid bits about National Parks. Suggest you read this before visiting the parks. You might decide to change your routings, in some cases.
Book Description
How did war originate? What makes a war popular or unpopular at home? How common is desertion or mutiny? What makes a successful guerrilla insurgency? How have armies been fed throughout history? The Reader's Companion to Military History addresses these and other intriguing aspects of the most destructive, fascinating, and relentless of human enterprises -- war. Filled with surprising anecdotes, little-known facts, and rare illustrations, The Reader's Companion to Military History covers major events and battles, commanders and theorists, weaponry and technological advances, and strategy and tactics. What makes the volume especially distinctive, however, is the range of thematic articles, covering such topics as courage, discipline, the effects of weather on warfare, military justice, surrender, the role of propaganda, the use of animals in war, the evolution of uniforms, psychological warfare, and morale. Unlike many military histories, the volume covers Asian, African, and South American history as well that of Europe and North America. Subjects range from the Persian Wars of 490 B.C. to such contemporary topics such as the revelations of Robert McNamara, gays in the military, and ethnic cleansing. One hundred fifty distinguished military historians, biographers, and journalists produced this volume under the editorship of Robert Cowley, editor of MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History, and Geoffrey Parker, Robert A. Lovett Professor of Military and Naval History at Yale University. The result is a remarkable chronicle of warfare that combines compelling historical narrative with the latest in contemporary scholarship.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent product with good summaries of key ideas.......2005-08-20
The book provides a quick review of key ideas and events in world military history. A good buy!
Reference book aimed at armchair historians.......2002-05-24
This is one of the better reference books I've purchased, for all the wrong reasons. Instead of trying to produce a completely comprehensive encyclopedia of military history (there are already several available) the authors wisely went a different path, aiming the book at an audience that doesn't just want dry facts.
Cowley used to edit Military History Quarterly, and Parker is a professor in Ohio. Together they collected essays from 150 historians on a range of topics, many of them more vague than descriptions of battles or campaigns. There are also lists of Top Tens, like best commanders, most underrated, decisive battles, etc. The authors said once that the book was intended to be browsed through rather than used as a reference exclusively, and it's very good for either.
A fine book, and a good addition to any library owned by a military history buff, enthusiast, or academic.
An excellent set of insights.......2001-11-10
Reader's Companion To Military History provides an encyclopedia of warfare from the early Persian Wars to modern times, providing almost six hundred articles detailing major battles, commanders, theories, weapons and strategies. Articles come from military historians, biographers and journalists and provide an excellent set of insights.
A top-shelf reference book.......1998-06-11
I originally picked this up at the library, just to browse through, but I stayed up late several nights running, absorbed in the essays and following the cross-references from topic to topic. My wife took pity on me and bought it for my birthday.
You needn't be a military historian to understand it and you needn't be an academic to enjoy it. The editors have done a wonderful job of unifying the submissions of a large number of specialists and of controlling the jargon level. The articles also discuss art, philosophy, and other theoretically non-military subjects, as well as weapons and tactics. And the scattered lists -- the 10 best battlefields to visit, etc. -- will get your attention.
Very highly recommended.

Book Description
Combining perspectives on the interplay of two areas of primary importance to our lives--business and society--this anthology brings together a wide range of readings on the subject. Topics include the historical evolution of the business enterprise, the emergence and development of the labor force, and the impact of the international marketplace. Castro concentrates on the moral and social aspects of business, the way it affects national economy, the environment, careers, the disadvantaged, government, and public opinion. Combining the idea that a good business education must also be a good liberal education, Castro is careful to show the connections between the way Americans have done and thought about business in the past, with the way Americans think and do business today. Considering the abundance of socioeconomic issues in everyday life, he shows that business ethics has always been an integral part of business, and that this continues to be true. He shows that the historical, social, and ethical dimensions of business are an inseparable and necessary component of business education. Chosen for their student interest and accessibility, the readings can be used for a variety of different courses covering business and society.
