Book Description

In the years since the publication of the first edition of this best-selling text, the incorporation of ideas and theories from the rapidly growing field of financial economics has precipitated considerable development of thinking in the actuarial profession. Modern Actuarial Theory and Practice, Second Edition integrates those changes and presents an up-to-date, comprehensive overview of UK and international actuarial theory, practice and modeling. It describes all of the traditional areas of actuarial activity, but in a manner that highlights the fundamental principles of actuarial theory and practice as well as their economic, financial, and statistical foundations.

      Book Description

This is a spectacular collection of federal documents and resources compiled from the complete contents of two of our popular CD-ROMs (ISBN 193182889X and ISBN 1592480373). It's a great value - purchased individually, these CD-ROMs would cost $49.90, so you save over 60% by purchasing this CD-ROM!

      FEDERAL GRANTS

Here is the OFFICIAL guide to Federal Grants and other assistance, produced by the Federal Government, with over 16,000 pages of loans, grants, surplus equipment, and training from 1482 agency programs worth $300 billion!

In addition to the comprehensive, extensively cross-referenced catalog of programs, there is information on developing and writing grant proposals and applying for federal assistance. It is produced by the General Services Administration, Office of Governmentwide Policy. Our reproduction is substantially less expensive than the printed version offered by the Government Printing Office at $63, and more convenient than the CFDA website. As the catalog itself says, "Get started today exploring the amazing world of grants and loans provided by the Federal Government!"

The "Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance" gives you access to a listing of all Federal programs available to State and local governments (including the District of Columbia); federally recognized Indian tribal governments; Territories (and possessions) of the United States; domestic public, quasi-public, and private profit and nonprofit organizations and institutions; specialized groups; and individuals. You can find assistance programs meeting your requirements and for which you are eligible. You can then contact the office that administers the program and find out how to apply.

      Features of the catalog include:

September 11th: Assistance Programs relating to recovery/response and U.S. Government Resources for the events of September 11th * Types of Assistance * Applying for Federal Assistance * Developing and Writing Grant Proposals * Top 10% Program List * All Programs Listed Numerically * 2001 Formula Report * Historical Index

The catalog includes this "note for individuals": "Many individuals [expect] to find some way to apply for a grant or loan directly from the Federal Government. While there are a limited number of programs offering direct loans to individuals, most programs provide funds to state and local governments or other organization to manage the distribution of assistance according to local needs. For example, a VA or FHA loan comes from a financial institution such as a bank, credit union, or mortgage company, not directly from the Federal Government." e Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) Please see the Table of Contents tab for a complete list of the agencies with programs included on this CD-ROM.

      SMALL BUSINESS ASSISTANCE

This electronic book on CD-ROM presents comprehensive information for entrepreneurs with documents, forms, and materials from the Small Business Administration (SBA), General Services Administration (GSA), and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). It includes the complete SBA contents from our SBA disc (ISBN 1592480357) plus material from the GSA and SEC for small business owners and investors. SBA material includes:

SBA library of documents, forms, startup kit for small business, information about loan programs and financing, laws and regulations, small business research reports, success stories, training workbooks, disaster and terrorist relief loans and aid, franchising information, international trade assistance, listings and directories, and SBA standard operating procedures. A full set of "frequently asked questions" (FAQs) provides a wealth of information about how the SBA can assist small business owners.

GSA material includes information on small business support. The SEC material includes questions and answers, rules and pending rules that apply to small businesses, small business forms and associated regulations, and other information from the SEC Office of Small Business Policy.

The documents are reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Apple Macintosh systems. Reader software is included on the CD-ROM.

Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government.. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work utilizing the benefits of the Adobe Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed, searched by finding specific words, or printed without untold hours of tedious research and downloading. Vast archives of important public domain government information that might otherwise remain inaccessible are available for instant review no matter where you are. This book-on-a-disc makes a great reference work and educational tool. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust.

      1 out of 5 stars Pointless.......2004-07-10

Save yourself a lot of money and time ... just visit your local NonProfit Resource Center. These CD's are direct burns from government websites with a cheap case and covers. I got them and returned them the same day.

1 out of 5 stars do not buy.......2004-07-07

It is not from government. Useless disk and don't waste your time and money. Search else where.

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-08-13

The CDROM is essentially a dump of the information found on government websites such as SBA, SEC, etc.

The information is voluminous so if you have a slow modem, there may be some value in purchasing the info on the CDROM for the sake of having it consolidated in one place. You will learn little new if you have already been to the websites.

Also, some of the links on the CDROM do not work properly. You open the page in Adobe Acrobat and receive and error message saying the page has to be opened in a browser. You open the page in a browser and you get a message saying the page has to be opened in Adobe Acrobat.

That kind of foolishness more or less sums up the value of the CDROM from my perspective.

      1 out of 5 stars big time-waster.......2003-05-11

Not only is all of this info available online, but the CD gives you a collection of non-indexed, gigantically HUGE Acrobat PDF files, some about 100MB in size. Navigating a 5MB text PDF is painfully slow - try 100 MB. Finding what you're seeking is practically impossible, and navigating PDFs of that size takes an eternity. Even a fast machine takes a couple minutes just to load the files into Acrobat, never mind doing searches, etc.

If they had broken up the files and named them logically (instead of titles like A1, B1, etc.), and provided some kind of indexing application or document that would point you to specifically what you wanted, then, yes, it might be handy to have. Otherwise, go online, and find answers 100 times more quickly. This is a ridiculously poorly done CD-ROM in this day and age. Big waste of $, in my opinion. If you have a slower/older computer without much memory, you'd REALLY want to avoid this thing like the plague.

1 out of 5 stars You can get this on line for free.......2003-05-05

This disc contains pdf files downloaded from government web pages. Save yourself the money and go to the SBA, GSA, SEC web pages yourself and look up the information that is relevant to you.

        Book Description

In November 1994 the Norwegian electorate rejected membership of the European Union. Since then the country has struggled to adapt a range of policies to fit in with those of the EU. This book provides the first all-round coverage of the relationship between the EU and its oil-rich northern neighbor and sets out the options open to Norway in the future.

Professor Archer examines the background to the 1994 decision both in terms of an expression of interests within Norway and in terms of national feeling. He then investigates the subsequent interaction between Norway and the EU through the European Economic Area (EEA) - which allowed Norway access to the EU's markets; the Schengen agreement - dealing with justice and border matters and the Common Foreign and Security Policy. It includes discussion of policies that have had a particular effect on Norway, such as those of the gas directive, fisheries and the sale of alcohol and looks at how Norway has adapted itself to EU policy, noting the cases where the country has dug in its heels and when it has been acquiescent.

This book will appeal to students and researchers with an interest in European integration and Nordic studies in general.

        4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Read.......2006-06-10

Just got off a cross-country trip, where I started/finished this week. It's a great "plane book".

In all honesty, wish I had read this some years back at a time when I had a very difficult boss.

It's an easy read with some good, practical suggestions.

There is also a self-assessment component, something I usually dislike, but here I really got into it and found the "results" sometimes surprising (to me).

Even if you don't hate your boss/job, I think it's an interesting read. Also a perfect gift for those friends who are constantly whining about their bosses!

I rate it a 4 out of 5 because, at least for me, it got a bit wordy at the end. If you start skim-reading toward the end, it's a def 5!

5 out of 5 stars Sole Proprietor, Still Dealing with Nonsense!.......2006-06-09

I left the corporate world several years ago to escape drudgery
and daily bickering with employees. Now I hold my client's hands instead of my employees!

Ms. Jansen's no nonsense approach to dealing with difficult individuals really resonates with me. Whether you answer to a Board of Directors, or to Yourself, read this book! She asks you to examine YOUR behavior as well. Bravo Julie!!!!

Keep your sense of humor, remain optimistic, breathe & get this book for your or your company's library!!!

5 out of 5 stars You Want Me to Work with Who?.......2006-06-01

I was a big fan of Julie Jansen's after reading her first book, "I Don't Know What I Want, But I Know It's Not This." In fact, reading that book at an important juncture in my life helped successfully propel me forward to go back to school for my MFA and to reignite my passion for writing. So I just had to read "You Want Me to Work with Who?" when it came out. There is a real longevity value to this book. It's not trendy or too "today." I think the advice given will apply ten years from now, and I also think it can be applied to a lot of different situations (not just "the office" - in fact, I thought about how helpful this book can be for everything from going back for an MBA or joining the PTO - situations that attract very different personalities!) What I love most about Julie's books are that there is a depth to them. The experience is not just about reading words, but you have the opportunity to do exercises that let you look inside yourself and how the concepts she writes about apply to you and your situations - while giving realistic advice about what to do.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and fun.......2006-04-21

Julie Jansen gives solid advice on how to get a work life you like. I love her self-assessment exercises - they can help everyone.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!.......2006-04-03

This is an excellent resource for anyone who is trying to sucessfully navigate the professional environment. The book provides straightforward guidance and handy tips for how to handle those challenging personality types. Wish I had this book years when I started working!

Regis Philbin seems to have it all. He's the host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, the most popular game show in television history. He already has a large fan base from his daytime talk show, Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee. Thanks to these successes, he now has his own fashion line. And, he has two national bestsellers to his credit. So what could he have to complain about?

Well, plenty. Now Regis Philbin, the king of curmudgeonly humor, has written an all-new book of side-splitting rants.

Regis provides the inside scoop on his ridiculously difficult life, with cantankerous takes on everything-and everyone-that drives him crazy. In addition, he reveals some of the funnier moments behind the scenes of his television shows, and his takes on travel, sports, and his legions of fans.

Whether it's skewering the producers of his morning talk show, or describing the travails of celebrity life today, in Who Wants to Be Me? you can be sure that Regis Philbin will tell it like it is.

I heard this dude was arrogant and a diva. Then I remembered one show where the plugged this book from the hot seat on Millionaire. I mean, take a look at the cover of this book and tell me you don't believe this man thinks he's all that and a bag of chips. Of, course I've read the book front to back...

5 out of 5 stars Who Wants To Be Me?.......2001-04-28

Regis Philbin, one of America's most know figures in the television entertainment industry, has taken this book very high. In here, you can expect short, true stories that really do make you chuckle. These make Regis what he is. I do recommend this book! -John

2 out of 5 stars Who Want's to be Me?.......2001-01-27

This book is fair. If you are a Regis follower and watch his LIVE show this book will be boring. He has told many of these stories on the air.

I like Regis, but I wanted to read something different from what we hear on his daily show.

4 out of 5 stars Regis likes to RANT!.......2000-11-20

OK, I'm an all-out Who Wants To Be a Millionaire fan, so I expected to like this book. (Hey, don't expect to like a biography, and certainly not an autobiography, if you don't like the person it's about and you don't like their style.)

Judging by the style of the writing, I believe this book was written by Regis sitting down with a tape recorder and telling stories. If you like his stories on Live! you'll like this book. He tells of travel frustrations, chainsaw envy, celebrity troubles, and Millionaire success. The style of the writing is just like his speaking style: "I wanted a CHAINSAW! And no one took me SERIOUSLY!"

The book includes plenty of comments from Joy and the two Philbin daughters, excerpts from the Live! show, David Letterman Top Ten lists, etc. This is no War and Peace, but it's a good, fun read. Here's hoping it will give me some subjects to bounce off of Regis when I make it to that Millionaire seat.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing here for trivia buffs.......2000-10-28

Regis is associated with the successful trivia show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire", but there is no trivia here. Perhaps Regis should read the book "Quizzing" which is a book with some great trivia questions and answers.
