                Book Description

In recent years, innovative texts in mathematics, science, foreign languages, and other fields have achieved dramatic pedagogical gains by abandoning the traditional encyclopedic approach in favor of attempting to teach a short list of core principles in depth. Two well-respected writers and researchers, Bob Frank and Ben Bernanke, have shown that the less-is-more approach affords similar gains in introductory economics. Although recent editions of a few other texts have paid lip service to this new approach, Frank/Bernanke is by far the best thought out and best executed principles text in this mold. Avoiding excessive reliance on formal mathematical derivations, it presents concepts intuitively through examples drawn from familiar contexts. The authors introduce a well-articulated short list of core principles and reinforcing them by illustrating and applying each in numerous contexts. Students are periodically asked to apply these principles to answer related questions and exercises. The text also encourages students to become “Economic Naturalists,” people who employ basic economic principles to understand and explain what they observe in the world around them. An economic naturalist understands, for example, that infant safety seats are required in cars but not in airplanes because the marginal cost of space to accommodate these seats is typically zero in cars but often hundreds of dollars in airplanes. Such examples engage student interest while teaching them to see each feature of their economic landscape as the reflection of an implicit or explicit cost-benefit calculation.

                      Book Description

This brand-new principles of macroeconomics text is the most exciting new entry in years. Written by two well-known and well-respected economists, Bob Frank and Ben Bernanke, the text seeks to teach introductory students the core economic concepts-the essence of economics-without overwhelming them with details. Principles of Macroeconomics presents the material in an intuitive way that avoids excessive math. The authors introduce a well-articulated short list of core principles, reinforce them by illustrating and applying each principle in several contexts, and then ask students to work exercises to see what they've learned.

The text seeks to create Economic Naturalists; that is, after reading the text, students will ask (and answer) questions about their economic environment. For example, students will see Braille dots on drive-up ATMs and ask why they're there. Peppered with such thought-provoking examples, Frank and Bernanke not only engage students, but teach them to see each feature of their economic landscape as the reflection of an implicit or explicit cost-benefit calculation. culation.

I used this textbook for a Macroecon class in college and it has got to be one of the best textbooks I've ever used. Not only is the textbook itself well written and easily explains complex theories, but it also comes with a DVD and online component. The online DiscoverEcon site gives you access to self-quizzes and further examples to help study. The DVD is basically lectures done in an easy to follow and entertaining (as entertaining as economics can be anyway) format.

I hope that my professor in my Microeconomics class uses the textbook from the same author.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid if you can.......2006-03-27

I think this is one of the worst textbooks I've ever read. It uses 14 different sentences to say the same thing, and makes basic concepts seem complicated by overstating/analyzing them. This book could be significantly shorter...maybe the author was getting paid by the word?
If you have any choice of textbooks for macroeconomics class, I recommend you choose one other than this. If you're the professor of the class, I beg you to not make your students endure this book. :) Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Economics made interesting - how about that?.......2005-09-19

I've never before been interested in economics, so what do I know about econ text books? Not much. But I know a good text book when I use one, and this is a very good one. It is well written and easy to follow. It makes an otherwise dull subject both learnable and enjoyable. Yes, even interesting. It is also very up-to-date, with some very current examples that really resonate with the 21st Century Economics student. All in all - first rate!

I just finished my introductory economics course with this book, and I found it easy to understand, and sometimes fun to read.
Other students I know also liked this book.
Sometimes quite wordy, but if you're already at the level to read this, I think you'd know how to skip them.

In response the previous negative review of Colander's book, I must say the text is one of my favorite texts of a long academic journey. I have an MBA (where I first used the Colander text as a refresher) and am completing an MA in Econ this semester and have often referred to the earlier edition that I own.

As one advances in economics, it may prove beneficial from time to time to go back to the basics, which is what this text is - an introduction to eocnomic reasoning utilizing an unbiased treatment of differing and competing economic theories. There is simply no way any professional economist would call this text advanced! While Colander may address a broad scope of subjects within the field of economics, he does so in a manner consistent with an introductory treatment. One does not even have to use math if preferred.

His conversational style may not be for everyone, but it worked well for me. It's not often that I have laughed out loud reading an Econ text, but I did with this book. I found it to be a refreshing and entertaining treatment of an otherwise dry subject. By the way, I have no affiliation to the publisher or author, which was a concern of the previous negative reviewer. For anyone considering the purchase, or even classroom use of this text, I'd be happy to provide more detail as to why I appreciate Colander's text - just e-mail me at timbuktu66@yahoo.com. In the end, the highest praise I can give any textbook author is to say that it fostered a desire to learn more about that subject. I am a graduate student in Econ today thanks to Colander's text and the professor who steered my toward reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Good Economics book.......2003-01-08

This book was great for my introductory economics course. It would be helpful for anyone interesting in learning more about this important topic.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs.......2001-01-16

As an introductory economics text, this one is absolutely terrible. The much touted "conversational" writing style is actually a poor imitation of teenage slang and substantially devalues the subject matter. Somewhat paradoxically, the depth and breadth of subject matter is most appropriate for very advanced students -- the students most likely find the writing style ridiculous. The author attempts to augment the usual AD-AS analysis to account for some endogeniety, but economists tell so many lies with AD-AS analysis that it is absurd to introduce additional confusing notation to address an issue that doesn't materially affect issues such as the efficacy of monetary and fiscal policy. Finally, readers should be appalled that publishers/authors submit thinly veiled sales pitches as reviews (see, for example, the first review for this text). Get your students something useful, written and reviewed by distinguised economists, such as Baumol and Blinder.

                          Book Description

Written in an informal colloquial style, this student- friendly principles of macroeconomics textbook does not sacrifice intellectual depth in its quest for accessibility. The author's primary concern is to instill economic sensibility in the student. Colander emphasizes the intellectual and historical context to which the economic models are applied.

                          Book Description

One day a year Kentucky is the most famous state in the union. That's Kentucky Derby Day, the first Saturday in May when the annual Kentucky Derby is run at Churchill Downs. On that day, Kentucky is the home to fast horses, beautiful women, and great whiskey. For the other 364 days it is home to fast women, beautiful horses, and people recovering from too much whiskey.
This duality -- hey, we're important today; but tomorrow we're nothing -- is a perfect reflection of a state of great contrasts.
Kentucky is the home of the most famous people in the world, Muhammad Ali. It is also the home of the most infamous, Charles Manson (his boyhood home is in Ashland --unmarked, of course).
Novelist Robert Penn Warren was a Kentuckian, as was gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson.
Illinois may have Land of Lincoln on its license plates, but Kentucky was where Honest Abe was born. He just moved away rather quickly.
These contrasts extend down to our counties: you can't buy a drink in Bourbon County (it's against the law to sell alchohol there) but you can in Christian County.
                          Kentucky is one giant curiosity.

1 out of 5 stars Sloppy research leads to a book full of errors.......2005-05-01

Vince Staten is a man with many interests. His restaurant in Prospect, KY serves some pretty good barbecue. He is a free lance writer with a weekly column in the Louisville Courier-Journal about DVD's, and he is a prolific author, having written 11 books. With that being said, there is no excuse for his sloppy research for this book. It is appalling how many factual errors this book has in it. The most glaring error is Staten's claim that the Corvette originated in Bowling Green, KY, and every Corvette ever made was manufactured there. A visit to the Corvette Assembly Plant website would have revealed to Staten that until June 1981, Corvettes were manufactured in St. Louis, with the exception of the first 300 ever, which were manufactured in Flint, Michigan. Staten also repeats the often-told myth that Bourbon County, Kentucky does not allow alcohol sales, and Christian County, Kentucky does. A visit to the Paris-Bourbon County Tourism Commision website would have revealed to Staten that except for during Prohibition, Bourbon County has never been a dry county. In a brief story about 19th century Louisville Eclipse player Jimmy "Chicken" Wolf, Staten says that the Eclipse's home field during the 1886 season was Eclipse Park at 7th and Kentucky Streets in Louisville. While a minor league ball park also called Eclipse Park opened at Seventh and Kentucky Streets in 1902, the 1886 Louisville major league team played at Eclipse Park at 28th and Broadway. In a story about serial killer Ted Bundy's stop at a coffee house in Louisville on his way to his infamous crimes in Florida, Staten refers to the street it was on as Rowan Avenue, when it fact it is Rowan Street. Aside from the factual errors, probably no one but Staten is curious about some of the "curiosities" he writes about. For example, there is a story about Marvin Barnes's "Time Machine." Barnes was a baketball player in the ill-fated American Basketball Association, which went under in the 1970's. Barnes refused to board an airplane headed from Louisville to St. Louis, because the flight crossed from the Eastern time zone to the Central time zone, which resulted in an arrival time in St. Louis which was earlier than the departure time in Louisville. Evidently, Barnes said he was not going to ride on a "Time Machine." As he does for most of the "Curiosities" listed in the book, Staten gives directions to the Louisville airport. Aside from the likelyhood that no one cares about this, the Louisville airport is nothing like it was in the 1970's. There was a major expansion in the 1980's, and the original terminal building built in the 1950's was replaced by two new terminals, and the runways were re-designed. I did not even finish reading the book, because I recognized it for what is is: a shameless attempt by the author to make a quick buck with minimal effort.
