Book Description
This text has been written by a renowned statistician and a practising actuary, primarily as an introduction to the basics of the actuarial mathematics of life insurance. Since it attempts to derive the results in a mathematically rigorous way, the concepts and techniques of one-variable calculus and probability theory have been used throughout.
Topics dealt with include important concepts of financial mathematics; the concept of interests; annuities-certain; mortality theory; different types of life insurances; stochastic cash flows in general and pure endowments, whole life and term insurances, endowments, and life annuities in particular; premium calculations; reserves; mortality profit; and negative reserves.
The book contains many systematically solved examples showing the practical applications of the theory presented. Solving the problems at the end of each section is essential for understanding the material. Answers to odd-numbered problems are given at the end of the volume.

Laura Kipnis, who teaches film at Northwestern University, adopts an unpopular stance: that of speaking for those whose sexual tendencies stray from the acceptable path. As such, she adds a different perspective in the always-raging debate on the role of pornography in America. Among her arguments is that pornography is often overlooked as a class issue, couched instead almost always as a morality matter. Realizing that many of those employed by the sex industry and those who support it are separated by class from those who deem it so unsavory, provides a particular insight into the perspective of those sitting in judgment.
Book Description
In a book that completely changes the terms of the pornography debate, Laura Kipnis challenges the position that porn perpetuates misogyny and sex crimes. First published in 1996, Bound and Gagged opens with the chilling case of Daniel DePew, a man convicted—in the first computer bulletin board entrapment case—of conspiring to make a snuff film and sentenced to thirty-three years in prison for merely trading kinky fantasies with two undercover cops.
Using this textbook example of social hysteria as a springboard, Kipnis argues that criminalizing fantasy—even perverse and unacceptable fantasy—has dire social consequences. Exploring the entire spectrum of pornography, she declares that porn isn’t just about gender and that fantasy doesn’t necessarily constitute intent. She reveals Larry Flynt’s Hustler to be one of the most politically outspoken and class-antagonistic magazine in the country and shows how fetishes such as fat admiration challenge our aesthetic prejudices and socially sanctioned disgust. Kipnis demonstrates that the porn industry—whose multibillion-dollar annual revenues rival those of the three major television networks combined—know precisely how to tap into our culture’s deepest anxieties and desires, and that this knowledge, more than all the naked bodies, is what guarantees its vast popularity.
Bound and Gagged challenges our most basic assumptions about America’s relationship with pornography and questions what the calls to eliminate it are really attempting to protect.
Customer Reviews:
This is the future of porn studies.......1999-06-19
The author of the Kirkus Review (above) states that Kipnis's work would be "more at home at an MLA conference," while at the same time he contends her work is "not likely to inspire the dawning of a new era of pornography studies." But what could signal the dawning of such an era as well as a presentation by Kipnis at an MLA conference? You can't have it both ways, Kirkus.
Besides, Kipnis's essays are not written in the complicated intellectual prose of typical MLA fare. They are very accessible, and due to this fact they were able to open my mind to thinking about pornography in a way I never had before: Why, among all commodities, is porn singled out (as are few others) for specific questions about its moral value and societal worth? And what are the class issues embedded in the porn industry?
Although this chapter strayed a bit from the porn theme, the most enlightening in the piece for me was the chapter on how our culture views fat and fat people. Kipnis talks about cultural taboos and reasons for the demonization of the fat in a way that I've never seen done before. She makes the reader understand why people hate you if you're fat, and why prejudice against fat people is one of the few remaining culturally-sanctioned prejudices, even for the politically-correct, along with classism and prejudice against the mentally ill.
Contrary to Kirkus's view, Kipnis's work is definitely groundbreaking and may lead to further intellectual investigations, into porn, on a level never seen before.
An eye-opening, mind-expanding look at "filth".......1996-11-26
Kipnis adds her distinctive study to the growing chorus of books by women that have defended and explored pornography dispassionately in the last five years. (See, for example, Nadine Strossen's _Defending Pornography_ and Wendy McElroy's _XXX:A Woman's Right to Pornography_.) Kipnis takes as her jumping-off point the case of a gentle, well-behaved gay man who was given a long jail sentence for responding to fantasy bait concocted by the FBI on the Internet; somehow, discussion (read: Orwellian "thought crime") of sex and murder of children translated to hard time in jail. Mere ideas are NOT innocent in this country, after all. [But why don't we jail authors and fans of murder mysteries and true crime books, or at least TRACK them?) She goes on to study the odd byways of pornography: magazines of nude and copulating fat people, geriatric porn, transvestite pornography. If you've never seen such material and tend to assume it must connect to mental illness and criminality, Kipnis will give you much to think about. Her discussion of the ideology and techniques of Hustler magazine is nothing short of brilliant, even for the men -- and we are legion -- who have always found the magazine disgusting or beneath notice. A welcome addition to the public debate over durdy peek-chures
Book Description
When a newly ennobled politician believes he has been misidentified as a terrorist who killed a busload of young children thirty years ago, barrister Trish Maguire agrees to help a biographer fight the libel case. At the same time, her old friend, Inspector Caro Lyalt, is faced with an impossible decision. In the running for a fantastic new job within the police force, someone secretly tells Caro that her closest rival is in the pay of one the biggest organized crime families in South London. If the allegation is false and she passes it on, shell lose all hope of this job or any other; if its true and she does nothing, shell never forgive herself. As the two women help each other find the information they need, Caros informant is shot. Then the body of a young woman is found trussed, gagged and suffocated, with all the trademarks of a mob killing. And someone is trying to use Trishs twelve-year-old half-brother, David, to force her to drop her inquiry.

Looking for truth under layers of deceit........2005-10-16
Natasha Cooper's "Gagged & Bound" brings back Trish Maguire, a driven woman who has a difficult time juggling her personal life with her boyfriend, George, and her demanding job as a barrister. One day, a colleague asks Trish to mollify Beatrice Bowman, a hysterical author who is being sued for libel by an ambitious peer named Lord Simon Tick. Bowman has written a book about a nineteen-year-old radical student activist named Jeremy Marton who went to jail for setting off a bomb that killed and maimed a busload of schoolchildren back in the seventies. Tick is suing Bowman because the author quotes passages from Marton's diary in which he refers to a fellow protester with the code name "Baiborn." This happens to be the name by which Tick is known to his close friends and family. Had Tick been a terrorist himself back in his youth, or is it possible that two separate people both go by this unusual nickname?
Meanwhile, Caro Lyalt, an inspector in the Metropolitan Police force and Trish's close friend, is interviewing for a job as a liaison in the newly formed Serious Organized Crime Agency. Caro is shocked when her friend, Stephanie Taft, a constable known as a whistle blower, is shot shortly after imparting a shocking piece of information to Caro. Stephanie believed that a prominent member of the police force might be on the payroll of the Slabbs, a vicious organized crime family. The Slabbs are famous for their ruthlessness and for the sadistic way in which they punish informers. Caro soon involves Trish in this case, even though she knows that anyone who asks questions about the Slabbs may end up "gagged and bagged," with a stick forced between his teeth and a bag placed over his head until he runs out of oxygen.
"Gagged and Bound" is a dramatic tale of secrets, lies, crime, and corruption, as well as a compelling psychological mystery with a large cast of characters. Trish is a compassionate and tenacious person who acts first and thinks later, much to her boyfriend's consternation. Cooper beautifully depicts Trish's delicate relationship with her sensitive and loving partner, George, as well as with her vulnerable eleven-year-old brother, David, whom she is raising. Although the three have had some rough times, they are slowly beginning to gel as a family. Lord Tick is a slimy social climber who would do anything to preserve his reputation, and the Slabbs are as thuggish and ruthless as their name implies. As the story proceeds, Trish interviews a number of people who are able to shed light on the Baiborn and Slabb cases, and she eventually makes some startling discoveries. Unfortunately, Trish's inquiries draw the unwelcome attention of some unsavory individuals who attempt to frighten her into backing off.
Natasha Cooper has an understated yet powerful writing style. This is a thriller with depth, and reading it is like unpeeling the layers of an onion. As the layers comes off, we learn more about each character's motivations and inner demons, and along with Trish, we discover that the two cases preoccupying her are much more complex than she could ever have imagined when she first began her investigations. Although the conclusion has a few unnecessarily melodramatic elements, "Gagged & Bound" is an involving novel that should find a ready and appreciative audience.
terrific English legal thriller .......2005-09-28
New House of Lords member Simon "Baiborn" Tick sues renowned biographer Beatrice Bowman for claiming he was one of the terrorists who killed a bus filled with children three decades ago. Beatrice insists she is right and hires London barrister Trish Maguire to represent her against Simon's libel suit.
At the same time Trish's friend, Police Inspector Caro Lyalt faces a moral dilemma about a rival competing for a job that she wants. Apparently rumors abound that a London crime family is making payoffs to a certain police offer. The accusations have not been proven so if false it would destroy both careers anyway; hers for being a snitch and her opponent by innuendo. On the other hand if true, she will not be able to sleep at night if she remained silent. Caro assists Trish with information on the thirty year old deadly bombing attack while the barrister seeks evidence to either confirm or deny the mob tie.
GAGGED & BOUND is a terrific English legal thriller starring one of the better protagonists of recent years. The story line is fast-paced as readers observe Trish struggling at home with George while working on the libel case and trying to assist her best friend Caro with her quandary. Fans will appreciate this fine tale with an intriguing final twist about justice.

Great Hollywood stories w/ Hope and others .......2006-10-06
Professor Don McCaffrey's latest book on Hollywood is a pleasurable read, and even more importantly, adds insight into the one of the comedy writers of the time.
The text is a combination of interviews with the late writer, Edmund L. Hartmann and Professor McCaffrey's analysis and opinions of Mr. Hartmann's film and television work.
You can tell Dr. McCaffrey has a passion for Hartmann's life. Writing for some of the best Bob Hope films and for television later on, Mr. Hartmann has experienced both the best and worst and TinselTown has done in the past seventy some years.
The reader is provided with some great anecdotes: We hear about Abbot and Costello, the mostly forgotten comedy team of Chic Johnson and Ole Olson who worked with Mr. Hartmann in Ghost Catchers, the early days of Star Trek's Deforest Kelly (Dr. McCoy), and even about the popular Christmas tune, "Silver Bells" (introduced in a Hope film) providing its composer Ray Evans with income.
Both McCaffrey and Hartmann have high estimation of the late actor, Fred McMurray, and of the comedian, Bob Hope, who both critics give praise to his writing staff for the popularity of his films. Old "ski nose's" professionalism is demonstrated by stories of his adaptability of spur of the moment events with his comic talent contrasted that with Don Knotts and Walter Matthau who took on similar roles in later years.
Edmund L. Hartmann, by all accounts was a kind hearted man, who probably knew the Hollywood power structure better than most, but still had a hard time when others were treated badly such as the great director Preston Sturges.
The late President Reagan is also mentioned, during the decade of the fifties. Readers are encouaged to read the chapter for themselves to make their own judgements.
While the book adds a great deal of insight. A bit more analysis from episodes of My Three Sons and Family Affair would have been appreciated. In particular, how did the series deal with transitional changes in actors? For example, when in My Three Sons, when Uncle "Bub" left the program and "Uncle Charlie" showed up, and there was little mention of the passing of a character or changing of the guard. When some programs ran over three hundred episodes during a run, was it impossible to repeat some plots?
Most of Mr. Hartmann's family programs dealt with a widowed or orphaned members of a family and it would have been nice to have known a bit more about his feelings for what the modern television sitcom had evolved into.
With Family Affair coming out on DVD, perhaps more of Mr. Hartmann's fan base can get things going for other programs such as the little seen To Rome With Love and the Smith family to come out on digital. Those wishing to help should go to [...], register and vote for their perspective programs.
Found myself respecting Mr. Hartmann more and more as I read this book.
Strongly recommended for all Bob Hope fans, My Three Sons, and Family Affair afficianados.
Sincerely,
JThree

Some of his best work.......2003-04-04
Under the guise of relating "true" accounts, Townsend presents us with 16 pieces of SM fiction he published in a five year stretch of time for "Bound & Gagged" magazine. If you are familiar with Townsend's work and enjoy it, then this is a great collection to own. However, Townsend's writing is on the rougher side of SM so if non-consensuality, under-age, risking, or dirty sex is a turn off to you, steer clear. I really wish the collection had an index of the stories so you could find that "really cool piece" more easily.
Summary.......1999-11-16
Of Men, Ropes & Remembrance is a tantalizing collection of L. T. stories that he originally wrote for Bound & Gagged Magazine, and which were first published between 1993 and 1997. These short pieces are basically written in a lighter mode than many of L. T.'s other tales, mostly because they are presented as basically true accounts by the man telling the story. A few are actually based on fact, but the author now admits even these have been considerably en-hanced by his ever lusty imagination. We are thus treated to an action-packed collection of incredibly arousing short stories, plus a couple that were deemed a bit heavy for the B&G format and hence never previously published. The book starts with some comments by Bob Wingate, founder and publisher of Bound & Gagged, and concludes with some correspondence - to and from the author - concerning the proper definition of slave.
