Book Description
Entrepreneur's Notebook propels you on a whirlwind tour of the start-up process. It is an invaluable reference for new and experienced entrepreneurs that includes chapters on a wide range of topics, from entrepreneurial team building to business plans to financing. This excellent book provides an incredible amount of practical information that will help you make smarter decisions and avoid costly mistakes. The author, Steven K. Gold, is an accomplished entrepreneur who has co-founded and led five early-stage ventures. As an investor and mentor, he also advises many entrepreneurs and young companies. He earned his B.S.E. in Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and his M.D. from Brown University Medical School.
Customer Reviews:
Nice Guide for Beginners.......2007-06-16
The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.
If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.
A Must-Have for Entrepreneurs.......2007-05-14
Steven gives great illustrations to drive home his insightful advice for entrepreneurs. As he's "been there, done that," we can take his advice to heart in the hopes of becoming a success like him!
Exellent Book.......2007-05-11
Great book for getting ready to open a new business. Would refer to anyone thinking about opening a business.
Brief and to the point.......2007-04-27
This is a delightful little book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and succesful. The book is well written and easy to follow and interesting to read.
This is a must read for entrepreneurs, particularly budding ones as the information the book provides is very practical and can help you avoid making costly errors. The book covers a wide range of topics including the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, among other things.
The book is an excellent companion for the entrepreneur that is well worth having.
Invaluable advice for the budding entrepreneur.......2007-03-04
This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.

Book Description
Best–selling author Andy Kessler ties up the loose ends from his provocative book, Running Money, with this history of breakthrough technology and the markets that funded them.
Expanding on themes first raised in his tour de force, Running Money, Andy Kessler unpacks the entire history of Silicon Valley and Wall Street, from the Industrial Revolution to computers, communications, money, gold and stock markets. These stories cut (by an unscrupulous editor) from the original manuscript were intended as a primer on the ways in which new technologies develop from unprofitable curiosities to essential investments. Indeed, How We Got Here is the book Kessler wishes someone had handed him on his first day as a freshman engineering student at Cornell or on the day he started on Wall Street. This book connects the dots through history to how we got to where we are today.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-02-21
I haven't read Running Money but its next on my list. Andy Kessler does a phenomenal job on grasping your attention and then holding onto to it till the end. Very informative and educational... a must read !!
mildly entertaining.......2006-07-29
This book is a fast read and keeps your attention. I enjoyed the authors viewpoint on how recent history progressed as it did. I have not read the author's first two books "Wall Street Meat" and "Running Money", but from the reviews they are much different than this book, and have a lot to offer. He grabbed my attention, so I will add the other books to my wish list.
Fun, light reading for a sunday long bus ride...........2006-06-26
Nothing more than entretaining fare for a long tedious bus ride. Would not dissapoint the casual reader. No more no less.
Fun and Important Book.......2006-01-02
Fascinating story about the history of technology and capital markets. More fun than most books I've read, it's like riding a roller-coaster through history.
By giving us a detailed account of how these areas are interwoven, Kessler also looks to the future - showing how important it is for America (and the world) to make smart decisions that will lead to further advances.

Not what I expected. I love his first two books much more.......2005-12-02
I rated the author's first two books "Wall Street Meat" and "Running Money" five stars with the praise that "if you like Liar's Poker, Fiasco, Pit's Bull, Confessions of a Street Addict, Trading with the Enemy..., you must not miss this one". However, this book is a >90 degree diversion of the author's prior course, which is, in my opinion, to write interesting knowledge from an analyst and a hedge fund manager's perspectives. Sorry to say that his latest work had turned into records of history falling short of sharp analysis that made his prior works so unique and outstanding. Actually, when I was reading it, "The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century by Thomas L. Friedman" which I read after "Running Money" always jumped out of my mind. Vice versa, when I was reading "Running Money". However, I am obliged to say that "The World is Flat" is a better alernative to this. For those, in particular traders and investors, who havent read any of the author's books, please read his first ones. They are great reads. For old fans of the author, you might have to change your expectation quite a bit.

Book Description
The conditions for successful manufacturing have changed considerably in recent years. New technologies such as information technology and biotechnology are considered important players in eradicating poverty in developing countries, but the risky nature of projects based on new technologies forces firms to raise investment capital by means other than conventional capital markets.
This book examines the role of venture capital institutions in financing technology-based ventures both in developed and developing countries. It also explores that part of venture capital activity which is hitherto vastly under-researched; namely the ability of venture capital institutions to render a whole host of value-added support functions. These include setting up management teams and designing strategic plans for fledgling enterprises. The latter issue is operationalized through a series of carefully chosen case studies.
Financial Systems, Corporate Investment in Innovation, and Venture Capital will be a valuable text for scholars and students of the theory and practice of financing innovation. It will also be a valuable source for governments, NGOs, financial institutions and multilateral agencies interested in the practicalities of promoting technology-based small and medium enterprises.

Book Description
Initial public offerings (IPOs) play a crucial role in allocating resources in market economies. Because of the enormous importance of IPOs, an understanding of how IPOs work is fundamental to an understanding of financial markets generally. Of particular interest is the puzzling existence of high initial returns to equity IPOs in the United States and other free-market economies. Audience: Designed for use by anyone wishing to perform further academic research in the area of IPOs and by those practitioners interested in IPOs as investment vehicles.

Book Description
During the 1980s, and particularly since the market crash of 1987, corporations and entrepreneurs have been seeking new ways to finance the establishment and growth of new businesses. One of the outcomes of these efforts has been the hybrid security, generically called "dequity" because it is neither a bond nor a stock. In this work, Andrew Chen and John Kensinger examine the various forms of dequity, describing its characteristics, how it evolved, how it's being used, and what the future may hold for it. In looking at the many financial innovations that blended the traits of debt and equity, Chen and Kensinger find three revolutionary changes that took place in the '80s: the use of debt to increase equity ownership by employees; the transfer of control over corporate resources from managers to lenders; and the shift from owning assets indirectly through corporate stock toward direct ownership of production assets by investors. They fully explore the increased specialization of roles that has resulted in employee control of companies, as well as detailing such practical issues as the tax advantage of leveraged ESOP, the value of organizational capital, innovative methods for reducing the cost of going public, and the benefits of R&D limited partnerships. This is the first book to fully analyze the development of dequity, and will be an important reference source for a variety of individuals, including investment bankers, corporate financial executives, institutional investors, and students of finance and banking.

Book Description
This volume focuses on recent pricing puzzles in investments. The valuation of Internet companies, effects of firm size in takeover studies, and long-run performance of mergers in the telecommunications industry are all seen as riddles for the Efficient Markets Hypothesis. Explanations may be
found in studies of the effects of differences in investor risk/return preferences, information and liquidity. Also featured are studies describing recent innovations in corporate finance, such as an experimental study of discount rates, an analysis of issues related to the estimation of internal cash flows, corporate payout policy, and the use of convertible and
warrant bonds by Japanese firms.

Book Description
This innovative book analyses the role and importance of investment in knowledge and fixed capital as two distinct sources of technological change. It provides a balance to most of the recent literature on technological change, which focuses almost exclusively on R&D and intangible investment in innovation and technological assets. The author shows how innovative investment in fixed capital still represents a central part of innovation in firms.
The book begins by reviewing the major economic approaches to technology and innovation. It discusses the progressive shift from capital (embodied) investment to disembodied investment including R&D and design. Using one of the most extensive data sources, Rinaldo Evangelista empirically tests whether disembodied technological activities are more important than traditional investment in productive capital. Perhaps surprisingly, the evidence suggests that fixed productive capital emerges as the most relevant and widespread source of investment in innovation across firms and industrial sectors. The author concludes that even in high-tech industries embodied and disembodied technological activities are complementary rather than substitutive.
This book will be welcomed by those interested in technological and innovation studies, industrial organization and business strategy.
