From the supplier: There was no comprehensive tax reform bill in 1996, but a number of bills passed in 1996 contain substantial tax provisions affecting income taxation of individuals. Tax changes for medical expenses include the creation of medical savings accounts and exclusion of long-term care insurance and accelerated death benefits. Tax credits are available for adoption expenses up to $5,000 per child. Other tax law changes addressed personal injury damages exclusion, worker classification, earned income tax credits, gifts of appreciated property to foundations and state taxation of nonresidents.

From the supplier: The accounting and auditing firm Ernst and Young has agreed to a $110 million settlement in a lawsuit stemming from the failure of the Insurance Corp of Ireland (ICI), which was one of the largest insurers in Eire. The settlement consists of a $55 payment to Allied Irish Banks (AIB) and $55 million to the administrators of ICI. AIB purchased ICI in 1983 and found out that it was seriously underprovisioned. Despite an infusion of $57.6 million from AIB, ICI went into government receivership with liabilities exceeding $432 million. AIB sued Ernst & Young in 1985 for professional negligence.

From the supplier: The American Council of Life Insurance is meting with the American Bankers Assn to negotiate a compromise over the dispute between the insurance and banking industries over banks' insurance powers. The meetings have dismayed insurance agents' trade associations. If the insurance industry decides to support federal legislation to allow banks to market insurance, agents plan to retaliate by lobbying Congress to give banks the power to underwrite insurance.

                            Book Description

Since the 1930s, industrial sociologists have tried to answer the question, Why do workers not work harder? Michael Burawoy spent ten months as a machine operator in a Chicago factory trying to answer different but equally important questions: Why do workers work as hard as they do? Why do workers routinely consent to their own exploitation?

Manufacturing Consent, the result of Burawoy's research, combines rich ethnographical description with an original Marxist theory of the capitalist labor process. Manufacturing Consent is unique among studies of this kind because Burawoy has been able to analyze his own experiences in relation to those of Donald Roy, who studied the same factory thirty years earlier. Burawoy traces the technical, political, and ideological changes in factory life to the transformations of the market relations of the plant (it is now part of a multinational corporation) and to broader movements, since World War II, in industrial relations.

                              Book Description

What explains the international mobility of workers from developing to advanced societies? Why do workers move from one region to another? Theoretically, the supply of workers in a given region and the demand for them in another account for the international mobility of laborers. Job seekers from less developed regions migrate to more advanced countries where technological and productive transformations have produced a shortage of laborers. Using the Dominican labor force in New York as a case study, Ramona Hernández challenges this presumption of a straightforward relationship between supply and demand in the job markets of the receiving society. She contends that the traditional correlation between migration and economic progress does not always hold true. Once transplanted in New York City, Hernández shows, Dominicans have faced economic hardship as the result of high levels of unemployment and underemployment and the reality of a changing labor market that increasingly requires workers with skills and training they do not have. Rather than responding to a demand in the labor market, emigration from the Dominican Republic was the result of a de facto government policy encouraging poor and jobless people to leave -- a policy in which the United States was an accomplice because the policy suited its economic and political interests in the region.

This is an absolutely fabulous text for understanding Dominicans in the United States. Hernandez uses a historical-structuralist approach for understanding Dominican immigration, which I found an important corrective in a generally celebratory literature that ignores real social problems confronting immigrants of color. Hernandez takes race seriously and does an excellent job with her data. The book is well worth the investment if only for the data, although I'm comfortable asserting that Hernandez is exemplary in her race-class-gender analysis among immigrants of color (Dominicans) in NYC. An absolute REQUIREMENT for any serious engagement of Dominicans in the United States.

                                Book Description

While the health effects of many aspects of life, from diet to marital status, have been extensively explored, little study has been made of the health effects of work. Covering such topics as on-the-job dangers, the role of unions in worker protection, and occupational health in both developed and developing countries, this collection of articles conclusively demonstrates the negative impact that neglect of citizens' working lives has on pubic health. With more Americans dying each year from job-related causes than were killed in a decade of combat in Vietnam, Health and Work Under Capitalism is a long-overdue and unusually significant book.
