Book Description
This study focuses on fifty years of evolution in the tobacco industry from the vantage point of the strategic actions taken by its member firms in response to the anti-smoking environment. It details the growth of the industry from a collection of old-style single-brand companies to its modern status as a strategic group of diversified multi-brand competitors. The work of management guru Michael Porter provides the framework for the study. The strategic choices made by the six companies are examined in light of Porter's management theories by focusing on the firms' attempts at both product and market diversification. The book is a timely and instructive overview of an industry successfully operating in an increasingly hostile business and social environment.

Book Description
Of all the hand tools used in the modern shop, planes exert a special fascination. Though quite simple, planes are enormously versatile and practical when skillfully used. The articles in this book, collected from Fine Woodworking, illustrate a host of topics, including basic plane operation, how to choose the right plane for the job, and specialty planes. Step-by-step instructions show how to build wooden planes - a popular project for hand tool fans - and how to correctly tune and sharpen, essential for proper plane operation.
Customer Reviews:
Not my style of book.......2007-01-12
You can find some usefull piece of information in this book. The illustrations are great.
Because this book is composed of a series of articles you feel that the text is disorganized and sometimes hard to follow.
You also keep feeling that you read the same stuff over and over again, plane with the grain, tune your plane.
This is not a bad book just not my style.
Love it and a must have for every woodworker...........2007-01-04
I have a collection of Taunton Press books and won't stop until I get them all. Most of them are collections of articles from their magazine Fine Woodworking. Can't go wrong giving this as a gift....
A great collection of information.......2005-12-21
I have read many books from the New Best of Fine Woodworking series and this is among the best of them. Though this is really just a collection of articles written by many different authors surrounding the general theme, there is a lot of very valuable information here. As always with Taunton, the writing/editing is excellent and the color photographs and illustrations are quite good. In my mind, this "collection of articles" approach is even more valuable than a book by a single author. The reason for this is that as you read expert advice from many woodworking pros, you get the sense that they don't all agree on everything. In my mind this is one of the most important lessons to learn... woodworking methods and techniques are an extension of the woodworker and as such there is no single "right way" of doing things.
As for downsides to this book, it can get a bit tedious to read about tuning a block plane for the fifth time if you grasped the concept the first time it was mentioned. Fortunately there is a lot of information given beyond just the basics of tuning and maintaining your planes, including actual techniques to employ in various situations.
All in all, I highly recommend this book as an excellent resource to all beginner to intermediate woodworkers interested in beefing up their hand plane skills and anyone else interested in a tool that mankind has been using for thousands of years...
Not a Lost Art.......2005-10-11
Readers should note that this book is part of a series that is a collection of articles by various authors. So, as a previous reviewer has stated, you sometimes will revisit a topic from a different author's perspective. That said, I really enjoyed this book. I began using hand planes about a year ago and had mixed results. After reading 'Working with Handplanes' I had a better sense of my planes and their use. I took the advice and "tuned-up" a new plane that I was fairly happy with. The result was a plane that performed substantially better.
It seems that for most woodworkers the use of handplanes is a lost art. That's too bad because planes have been around for centuries and are still around simply because they work well. If you're interested in using planes I highly recommend this book as a starting point to have your plane work as it should.
Working with Handplanes (The New Best of Fine Woodworking) (Paperback).......2005-09-08
In general, the book has good information, nice and illustrative pictures all over the place however, the order of ideas is mix since it does not follow the introduction made in each chapter, it goes back to block planes very often and the pictures in the pages do not follow the author explanation.
Book Description
A longtime woodworker's illustrated guide to the tools of the trade and how to use them. For those who would like to have the benefit of a woodworker's extensive experience with hand tools, this is the book to own. Crammed with practical information, it is the next best thing to looking over a craftsman's shoulder as he works with his tools, asking questions and getting straight answers in plain language, seeing how each tool is held and manipulated to get the best work out of it. From bit brace, chisel, and mallet to saws, specialized planes, drawknife, and spokeshave, Aldren Watson describes in detail the actions of the tools basic to good woodworking. All the procedures are explicitly illustrated with handsome line drawings, and an appendix gives plans and dimensions for making a workbench and other necessary pieces of shop equipment. With 450 b/w illustrations by the author.
Customer Reviews:
Useful and Enjoyable.......2007-10-22
Just beginning my adventure in woodworking, this book has done exactly as it claims in the back cover. It feels like I have a readily available experience woodworker in my pocket whenever I have a question about a tool. The explanation is clear like a craftsman would teach his apprentice, and because of this, the obvious question of what tool should I get first and what tool should be my next purchase is easily answered, without actually saying. The drawings make the book almost timeless, not dated by photos, and the diagrams are reminiscent of the technical sketch you may see on a drafting table. I purchased other books along with this, but keep referencing back to this book to answer my questions about what tool do I need for the next part of the job. The writing is easily explanatory and conversational at once, and is quite enjoyable to read. You can either read it in a linear fashion, from front to back, or you can choose the tool you have questions about (from the Table of Contents) and move directly to it to have your question answered.
Free bench plans if you've never built a workbench, are included. This is a book that could sell itself if you had a chance to open it up.
User's Manual for Woodworking Hand Tools.......2007-09-11
Watson has written a clear and concise user's manual for woodworking hand tools. He includes many of the basic hand tools that are overlooked (such as the brace and drawknife) in other hand tool books. I got more information out of Watson's clear drawings than I did from the beautiful photographs in Garrett Hack's "Classic Hand Tools" book. This book is meant to be kept in your workshop instead of on the coffeetable.
I Love This Book!.......2007-08-20
I don't gush over books very often but this is one of the best investments I have ever made. The illustrations are startling and the writing is clear and unadorned.
What Watson does very well is assume nothing with regard to his reader. He neither panders to the "old pro" nor is condescending to the "rank amateur." He just talks about how to use hand tools, how to think about hand tools and how to appreciate hand tools. I don't think there is a person doing wood working today who would not find something in here that makes them say "Oh, yeah..., that's a good idea."
I have spent quite a lot of money on the Taunton woodworking library and I value them highly. They are good books. But this one is the first one I pick up when I am just spending a few minutes sitting down or before drifting off to sleep.
One caution - this book is about "hand tools" and does include chapters on tools like "hand augurs" which very few of us use, however I have to admit I am tempted to buy one just because of the obvious pleasure this guy has in them. One of my quirks I suppose.
Useful book.......2007-08-09
This book, required reading for boatbuilding students at the Landing School, is a terrific resource for anyone using handtools. It covers usage, care, and maintenance of hand tools. A valuable reference book that I will keep handy in my toolroom.
Elegant, useful book.......2007-05-24
As someone new to woodworking who wants to focus on hand tools, I found this book an excellent introduction to tools ranging from the obvious to the relatively obscure. When I picked it up, I didn't think I had much to learn about, for example, hammers and screwdrivers; I was wrong. Then came the tools that I knew little or nothing about, such as draw knives, spoke shaves, marking gauges and bits and braces. Watson provides explanations of the working principles behind each, pointers on their use and proper maintenance, and offers plans for home-built accessories to improve the utility of your workshop. He even provides his readers two workbench options that I wish I'd seen before I built one of my own. Watson's writing is straightforward and clear, his voice is experienced but never condescending, and his drawings not only provide guidance but also lend a warmth and sense of craft to the book that make it a pleasure to return to again and again. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in woodworking. It's a great place to start, and a reference you'll return to for tips, ideas, and reassurance.
Book Description
What are two hands worth?
In linking forms of cultural expression to labor, occupational injuries, and deaths, Hands: Physical Labor, Class, and Cultural Work centers what is usually decentered--the complex culture of working-class people. Janet Zandy begins by examining the literal loss of lives to unsafe jobs and occupational hazards. She asks critical and timely questions about worker representation--who speaks for employees when the mills, mines, factories, and even white-collar cubicles shut down. She presents the voices of working-class writers and artists, and discusses their contribution to knowledge and culture.
Zandy also illuminates the relationship between contemporary poets and historical events such as the Triangle fire, and argues for consideration of Ralph Fasanella as a great narrative painter of the working class. Hands concludes with an imaginative interpretation of how our complex system of technology affects laboring bodies through various speed zones of history, culture, and lived experience.
This path-making book reveals the flesh and bone beneath the abstractions of labor, class, and culture. It is an essential contribution to the emerging field of working-class studies, offering a hybrid model for bridging communities and non-academic workers to scholars and institutions of knowledge.

Customer Reviews:
Walter Mosley's Appeal.......2000-03-11
Fiction writer Walter Mosely takes yet another daring turn with Working On The Chain Gang. This slim volume is his excursion into non-fiction and political commentary.
Mosley uses concise, plainly spoken language to urge for the study of Black American History as a map of the coming times for all Americans in the global economy.
Wage Slavery, the villification of the youth, and the commodification of humanity are just some of the issues that were once almost exclusively restricted to Black Americans but are slowly becoming concerns of us all.
Mosley's eye is daring and his words speak from an unflinching, sometimes necessarily abrasive, truth that harkens back to the words of early American printer/abolishionist David Walker's Appeal.
Though there are moments of extreme pessimism and unformed solutions to the problems he illustrates, Mosley's Chain Gang is a more than apt blueprint for the new revolution.

Book Description
A work of innovative literary and cultural history, The Servant's Hand examines the representation of servants in nineteenth-century British fiction. Wandering in the margins of these texts that are not about them, servants are visible only as anachronistic appendages to their masters and as functions of traditional narrative form. Yet their persistence, Robbins argues, signals more than the absence of the "ordinary people" they are taken to represent. Robbins's argument offers a new and distinctive approach to the literary analysis of class, while it also bodies forth a revisionist counterpolitics to the realist tradition from Homer to Virginia Woolf. Originally published in 1986 (Columbia University Press), The Servant's Hand is appearing for the first time in paperback.
