      Book Description

This text differs from traditional markets and institutions texts by centering around the FINANCIAL SERVICES companies provide rather than on the markets and institutions themselves. The text focuses on both the CREATION of financial services and the USE of financial services. This emphasis provides for a much more integrated, less encyclopedic treatment of financial markets and institutions that better represents today's continuously evolving financial environment.

You've read the how-to-figure-out-what-you-really-want-to-do books and completed their soul-searching assignments. You've prepared a resume worthy of the world's top performer in your field, and you've printed it on discreetly fabulous paper. And you've sent it to the (select, of course) few hundred employers you'd like to work for... and still you're looking for that great job. No wonder, then, that a book with the title Don't Send a Resume has grabbed your attention.

Jeffrey Fox is the ultimate marketer, consumed with and successful at ensuring his product stands out and is snatched up--and in this case, that product is you. Don't Send a Resume is his tip-laden guide on how to make yourself visible, desirable, and ultimately invaluable to your next employer. Dismissing the well-worn routes of sending unsolicited resumes and contacting personnel departments, Fox concentrates on what will turn job-seekers into super salespeople. While occasionally just spiced-up commonsense, his advice is simple, direct, and often ingenious, supported by details and made colorful by the odd illustration. Understand the jargon of job seeking and translate that jargon into meaningful marketing clues. Determine how the job you want creates value for the company and "dollarize" yourself accordingly. Look for a job in the unorthodox places that other job-seekers overlook. Write "boomerang" letters in response to job ads. Don't expect employers to care about your job objective or what you like to do; they only care about what they need. Don't talk and tell in an interview; answer, ask, listen, and sell. Whatever you do, don't order sauce-splashing food in a lunch interview, however tempting the dish. Oh, and don't forget to ask for the job. --S. Ketchum

        Book Description

Anyone who thinks getting a good job is easy in this booming economy should think again. The real plum jobs are out there, but theyre harder to get than ever. Fox offers a Job Getting Blueprint, a Job Seekers Glossary, several first interview questions, as well as the basic form and variations for a boomerang letter. His rules not only help todays job seekers devise a winning strategy, but also show them how to prepare for and make the best impression in an interview.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Job Getting Book I've Seen.......2007-04-24

Not only is this book fun and quick, it is POTENT. In addition, the concepts also make it one of the best SALES books I've read - and isn't that how you get a job? If you have to choose ONE book for job search advice - this is the one. And, no, I don't know the author! :)

5 out of 5 stars Should be called Don't JUST Send a Resume.......2007-01-29

Excellent tips for job seekers. Title should be revised to Don't JUST Send a Resume. Jeffrey Fox is sly as a fox in the title of the book and he doesn't really want you to NOT send a resume, he does suggest much more than simply sending a resume. Excellent advice for getting an interview and excellent advice for pre-interview (pre-sales) preparation. This book is a quick read and could be quicker if not for a few fluff paragraphs - (Be a Fish out of Water, Don't Order Linguini with Marinara Sauce, Wind Me Up at Harvard). The advice is easy to put into action and as I plan to embark on a new phase in my own career, this primer has increased my confidence several fold.

        5 out of 5 stars Reminders.......2006-05-29

No, this book isn't for everyone, but it had great ideas that some people can tend to forget or never knew. I thought it was a nice refresher and there are some things that I'll probably never use, but I'm smart enough to know that a book won't give you 100% of an answer. You have to be smart enough to pick out what applies to you, what your personality will allow and go from there.

There is a review that says "DO not call." I would disgree with that (even in the South). I called an employer to make sure that they got my resume, and it resulted in my resume getting into the right hands and I got the job.

This was a great book. I didn't agree with every single word, but I did agree with the spirit of what the author was trying to impart to others and I thank him for it - I start my new (and better, with a raise) job in two weeks. This book had a direct and important impact on the job I just got hired for and made it more than worth the $16.95 I spent on it!

3 out of 5 stars Slightly Interesting? Maybe. Groundbreaking? Hardly........2006-05-18

It's fairly interesting, yet there's nothing that's really slap-your-mama impressive. Most of it is just stuff the majority of us knew anyway. I pour through hundreds of resumes every few months, and I am the final decision maker when hiring a new employee.

It's not well suited for the southern states. The author repeatedly gives examples of the job applicant stating in his resume, "If I haven't heard from you in a day or so I'll call you." The best way to get your resume thrown in the trash, and maybe even a bloody nose, is to do "follow up calls" after sending a resume. If the company wants you, they'll call you. Your calling the company isn't going to push them into giving you an interview. Do NOT call the company.

Another thing that worries me is what the author considers as lying. In one passage the author says something like, "Do not tell lies on your resume. If you spent the summer as an intern stuffing envelopes you CAN say, 'I was an integral player in the implementation of a major million dollar advertising campaign.'"

Folks, I'm sorry to crash the little parade, but the above example is LYING. If you were a worthless envelope stuffer then don't try to play it up like you were someone special. You'll get much better results by saying you were asked to do a few things to help out, you enjoyed it, and that you would love to have a more important role next time.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book.......2006-04-05

I have been a full time executive career consultant for the past 4 years. If you skip chapters 12-15 and 40, this is a great book for most career seekers. It forces people to realize the getting a job is really and marketing and sales exercise... even if you are an engineer, a teacher, or an accountant. 5 out of 5 stars Get the Interview Everytime........2006-03-20

Had alot of valuable information I needed to update and make my resume better.

              2 out of 5 stars not great.......2005-09-30

I thought this book would be a good reference to see great styles and get ideas but was disappointed. I don't know what they based their career field selections on but of the 1000s of jobs, 202 isn't that many. Stylistically, most of the examples seem to go against the advice of other resume books and were not impressive. I did find a few helpful ideas from 2 or 3 of the resumes and it helped somewhat just to read through that many butit would be better for someone whose career choice happens to be in the book and the example they have is for someone at the same level.

5 out of 5 stars Best Resume Samples and Advice Of All.......2004-04-30

Just received this book and it really delivered. It's got over 200 samples, though I really only cared about the ones in my industry, healthcare. There were also some good letter samples I'll use. The advice on how to research a company and position yourself to line up closely with a posted position was helpful. I'd never done it as specific as they recommend. Anyway, of the books I've seen at the bookstore and read briefs online, this one was a great value. Good luck !

                4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2003-03-06

Nationally-syndicated columnist and career expert Kate Wendleton zeroes in on the most effective approaches to resume writing, beginning with developing a compelling statement of your accomplishments. She explains how to show the results of your work, outline the benefits you bring prospective employers and present your strong points effectively. She includes exercises to guide your deliberative process, plus before-and-after resume samples. These makeovers demonstrate how you can turn a routine resume into an interview-generating powerhouse. Much of the book is taken up with sample resumes, which are helpful models for writing yours though they may be pretty dull to read. In addition, Wendleton also provides specific tips on how to phrase and design your resume. While recommending this manual to job hunters, we from getAbstract have determined that if you read these hints carefully, you can just skim the examples until you find one that meets your needs. Wendleton - and you may well say `thank you' here - both shows and tells.

5 out of 5 stars Resumes that "pop" off the page.......2000-03-26

After an unsuccessful 5 month job search, I decided it must be my resume that was keeping me from getting interviews. "Building a great resume" starts with the key fundamentals - how to properly describe your accomplishments. Examples abound! And the before-and-after structure provides an excellent way to truly see how a prospective employer will view your resume. This book also addresses the trends of the 90's and the new millenium -- older employees with multiple jobs.
