Book Description
How much cash should a corporation have and should we worry when they have too much? This question has been hotly debated by manager and investors recently because managers of many of America's leading corporations have chosen to keep the spoils of the long economic expansion rather than return them to investors. As corporate cash coffers burst at the seems, some topping $20 billion, should investors worry about what managers will do with the cash when they finally decide to spend it?
This study tackles these and other questions related to corporate cash reserves. After developing a benchmark for the appropriate amount of cash a corporation in a given industry needs to fund its investments and survive an economic downturn, a group of cash-rich corporations are not only more acquisitive than other corporations, but they also tend to make poor acquisition choices, effectively squandering part of their cash reserves. The stock price reaction to acquisition announcements by cash-rich firms is significantly more negative than the reaction to announcements by other firms. The performance of the cash-rich acquirer declines following the acquisition, realizing the expectations of the stock market.
Overall, cash-rich firms destroy 7 cents of value for every excess dollar of cash reserves they hold, effectively receiving 93 cents on the dollar! This study documents that not only do managers tend to squander their stockpiles of cash, but also they are able to use this cash to deter any attempt to wrest control of the corporation from their hands. The message for investors and board members to be wary of cash stockpiles is clear.

Book Description
While the extent of female participation in the labor force varies across western countries, most have experienced a substantial change in women's attachment to the world of paid work. Everywhere, this trend has raised two central questions related to the children of working mothers: Should mothers of young children work outside the home at all? And if so, who bears responsibility for assuring the care and well-being of their children? Comparing the various policy choices made across France, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States, the book shows that there are differences in the extent to which societies accept both the idea of working mothers and the role of the state in shaping gender roles and children's lives.
Morgan employs a comparative historical approach that focuses on three time periods: the late nineteenth century, the era of rapid welfare state expansion from 1945 to 1975, and the period of seeming welfare state stagnation since the mid-1970s. The author shows how, starting in the nineteenth century, religion influenced political development in the four countries the book studies. Historic patterns of church-state relations and conflicts over religion affected ideologies about gender roles and the family, as well as the way religious forces would be incorporated into political life. These forces shaped welfare policy between 1945 and 1975, a critical time for social policy expansion. During this period, socially conservative forces in countries such as the Netherlands and the United States blocked policies that would encourage mothers to work, while the weakness of these forces enabled such policies in both Sweden and France. Morgan concludes that these policy decisions have had an enduring impact, in part because the expansion of the welfare state has been curtailed since the 1970s.
Customer Reviews:
A thoroughly researched critical examination.......2006-12-09
Written by Kimberly J. Morgan (Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, George Washington University), Working Mothers and the Welfare State: Religion and the Politics of Work-Family Policies in Western Europe and the United States is a scholarly examination of two critical questions for Western nations, in an era when women are increasingly a part of the paid workforce. The questions are: Should mothers of young children work outside the home? And if so, who bears responsibility for the care and well-being of their children? Working Mothers and the Welfare State compares and contrasts governmental policies concerning these issues in France, the United States, the Netherlands, and Sweden, especially during the latter half of the twentieth century and modern times. From the politics of child care in France to the consolidation of the private market model in America, Working Mothers and the Welfare State astutely dissects each implementation, exposing its strengths and weaknesses as well as its implications for future generations of mothers and children. A thoroughly researched critical examination especially recommended for women's studies shelves.

Book Description
Women's employment is on the increase throughout Europe, and more women are going into managerial and professional ocupations. These changes are both cause and consequence of wider changes in the family, relations between the sexes, and social attitudes more generally. However, differences in national policies and attitudes mean that trends in women's employment show considerable variation across Europe. Restructuring Gender Relations and Employment investigates the differences in women's employment across Europe and explores the possibilities and limits of structural change and development. The book seeks to develop a new framework for the investigation of the changing mosaic of employment, family lives, and gender relations in contemporary Europe.

Book Description
Levels of part-time work vary enormously across industrial society, from 66 per cent among women in the Netherlands to just 8 per cent among women in Greece. Part-time work was almost unknown in Eastern Europe, but is now growing rapidly in the same sectors of industry as in Western Europe and the USA. Between Equalization and Marginalization provides a comparative analysis of the development of part-time work in Europe and the USA from 1950 onwards, using longitudinal and cross-sectional data, and reassesses the competing theories and conflicting perspectives so far offered on the growth of part-time work among women. It concludes that part-time work does not equalize women's position vis a vis full-time workers, nor does it leave women in part-time jobs wholly marginalized. Instead, it shows that part-time jobs provide new opportunities for secondary earners and play a special role in the context of the sexual division of labour in the family. The country reports - by national experts - cover the USA, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, West Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Slovenia, and Poland. Two chapters by the editors synthesize the results and assess their theoretical implications.
Book Description
This book charts the personal dimensions of economic and social change by examining the significance and consequences of Russian peasant women's migration from the village to the factory and/or city in the years between the emancipation of the serfs in 1861 and the outbreak of World War I. The author uses case studies to explore the effects of urbanization and industrialization on the relationship of the migrant to the peasant household, and on family life and personal relations. It differs from other studies in looking at both village and city; in treating personal life, and in drawing on a wealth of archival data, most of it for the first time. The focus on women and the family provides a fresh perspective on the social history of late Imperial Russia.

Moving account by mother of British soldier killed by IRA.......2001-06-03
Lance Bombadier Stephen Restorick could have been just another British soldier among the 700 killed during the Troubles. But his mother has ensured that will not be the case with this moving and thought-provoking book that is a must read for anyone with an interest in Northern Ireland - republican, nationalist, Unionist or non-aligned. Stephen Restorick was shot dead by a sniper in South Armagh in February 1997, the last British soldier to date to be killed by the Provisionals. His alleged killer was convicted of the attempted murder of a police officer and subsequently released under the Good Friday Agreement with a fraction of his time served. Those are the bare facts, but Mrs Restorick, who has lobbied politicians from Gerry Adams to Tony Blair in her personal quest since her son's death, presents the human side of what happened. Parts of the book are heart-rending as she struggles to come to terms with how a smiling soldier was shot in the back in the dark as he examined the driving licence of a local Catholic woman at a checkpoint. Mrs Restorick is dignified, thoughtful, honest, straightforward and even has a nice touch of humour in her writing. She does not have all the answers but she poses a lot of the right questions and gives an important insight into how the relatives of casualties of the Troubles are left to pick up the pieces and wonder why. Mrs Restorick is no apologist for any side and this book is thoroughly recommended.
Toby Harnden (author of "'Bandit Country': The IRA and South Armagh")

Book Description
Nobody really understands Dutch women. They seem lively, well-educated and liberated. And yet—apparently—their participation in the labor market has always been far less than that of women in surrounding and economically comparable countries. Why? This book offers a wide-ranging and searching inquiry into the issue, relating data and conditions in the Netherlands to those in six other western European countries: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom. It probes attitudes to the family and motherhood and considers demographic trends and household composition throughout the period. It looks at women's education, their distribution throughout trade and industry, child care provision, and the disincentives and barriers to employment women have faced in the past and may still have today. The writer uses the facts to sift out valid from invalid (theoretical) explanations and relegates a number of them to the realm of the fairy tale.
Book Description
Gender and the Welfare State explores the configuration of care, work and welfare in eight countries: France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK and the USA. Bringing together the most recent empirical data available, it examines the impact of the welfare state on women 's and men 's roles and power relations, and on their access to resources.Casting a critical eye over feminist and comparative literature on the welfare state, Daly and Rake elaborate a new theoretical framework for understanding how gender relations are shaped by national welfare states. They argue that the welfare state reaches deep into people 's lives and that its effect is to be seen in the relative resources and power relations of women and men. The book traces the relationship between national welfare state configurations and care needs and care provision, the division between paid and unpaid work, the conditions of women 's and men 's participation in the labour market and gender differentials in access to the resources of money and time.Written in an accessible style, Gender and the Welfare State brings together wide-ranging information from the major European Union countries as well as from the USA, providing the reader with essential reference material. It will be welcomed by all those interested in gender, social policies and the comparative study of welfare states.
Customer Reviews:
Offers a wealth of documented social insights.......2003-08-10
Co-written by Mary Daly (Professor of Sociology, Queen's University, Belfast, Ireland) and Katherine Rake (Director of the Fawcett Society), Gender And The Welfare State: Care, Work And Welfare In Europe And The USA is a crucial and scholarly examination of the intersection between gender and the welfare state in eight countries: France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK and the USA. From acutely dissecting feminist and comparative literature on the welfare state; to presenting a new theoretical framework for understanding these issues and drawing connections between gender and household resources (as well as explanations of national configurations and cross-national patterns) and a great deal more, Gender And The Welfare State offers a wealth of documented social insights and would make an excellent addition to Gender Studies, Women's Studies, and Feminist Studies reference collections and reading lists.
