Great Companies, Great Returns shows that anyone can trounce the stock market over time just by investing in "the crown jewels of the best economic system on the globe." Jim Huguet builds a convincing case for accumulating a portfolio of stocks in American International Group, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Citigroup, Coca-Cola, Colgate-Palmolive, General Electric, Gillette, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Merck, Merrill Lynch, Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, and Schering-Plough. "These Great Companies don't have just good quarters or years; they consistently have good decades. They are not just great American companies, they are companies that can compete with and win against any company anywhere in the world, and they do, day after day after day."

According to Huguet's research, anyone who invested equally in all these 14 stocks for the 10 years between December 31, 1988 and 1998 would have beaten the S&P 500 index by an amazing 56 percent. The results are nearly as impressive for the 20 years ending in 1998. Why do these blue chips perform so well? Huguet says they share important traits: they derive no less than 40 percent of revenues from international operations; and they have superior management, dependable earnings growth, outstanding shareholder returns, distinctive brands, and track records of at least 50 years. The author also provides the details of his investing style, along with interviews with CEOs John Welch of GE, Maurice Greenberg of AIG, Alfred Zeien of Gillette, and William Steere Jr. of Pfizer. An excellent book for people looking for a relatively simple and safe way to invest for the long term. --Dan Ring

                      Book Description

Tired of gambling away your savings on investments that don't pay off?

Buy Companies, Not Stocks. This simple phrase is the foundation of veteran consultant Jim Huguet's innovative approach to investing, a strategy that focuses on the lasting strengths of the companies you're investing in and yields great returns that consistently outperform the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Designed for investors who are fed up with the taxes they're paying on excessive trading, stressed out by the gambling mentality that predominates today's stock market, and eager for safe investments that pay off big in the long term, Great Companies, Great Returns provides the ideal strategy for peace of mind through bull and bear markets.

While other investment books tend to focus on mathematical formulas that ignore the companies themselves, the Great Company approach uniquely identifies the qualities to look for in a company--not just a stock--that make that company the best long-term investment. In Great Companies, Great Returns, Jim Huguet explains the twelve traits that separate Great Companies from the rest. After decades of working closely with the Fortune 500 and top CEOs as a consultant, Huguet used his valuable experience to research which companies were likely to give the best returns in order to invest his own money. The twelve key traits he discovered--which look at the business as a whole, not just the stock price--form the basis for his groundbreaking strategy.

The fourteen companies that make the cut, including such superstars as GE, Coca-Cola, and Johnson & Johnson, as well as some surprises like AIG and Medtronic, fulfill all twelve requirements, and form a perfect list of stocks that investors can use to create a Great Company portfolio. In fact, if this book had existed ten years ago, everyone who invested in the Great Company Portfolio would have beaten the Dow Jones Industrial Average by over 20 percent.

Filled with valuable, easy to access investment advice, including checklists for comparing your existing portfolio with the twelve-point Great Company system, stock performance and volatility charts, and detailed information on the fourteen companies, Great Companies, Great Returns shows readers how to sell off shaky holdings, add the great ones, and spot up-and-comers that might become tomorrow's Great Companies. It also features exclusive interviews with CEOs of Great Companies, including Jack Welch of GE, Alfred M. Zeien of Gillette, Maurice R. Greenberg of American International Group, and William C. Steere, Jr. of Pfizer, for the ultimate insider's perspective.

This proven investment strategy has consistently beaten the Dow Jones, and even outperformed Warren Buffet's portfolio of stocks. A simple strategy that beginners can understand and experts can learn from, the Great Companies approach to investing is one no serious investor can afford to be without.

How do you invest in the best stock? Pick the best companies.

As veteran consultant Jim Huguet's research has shown, most Wall Street money managers are buying stocks for the short term, not companies for the long term. It's one of the reasons that 88 percent of all domestic mutual funds failed to beat the S&P 500 index in 1998, while Jim's Great Companies portfolio consistently beats both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones. But now, in Great Companies, Great Returns, every investor can learn the twelve traits that make a company great, and why Great Companies really do make Great Returns.

The Twelve Traits of All Great Companies:

                      Highly Regarded by Knowledgeable Experts
                      Publicly Traded

In Business at Least Fifty Years and Survived the Founder
Market Cap in Excess of $15 Billion
Global Company with at Least 40 Percent of Revenues/Profits from International Operations
                      Outstanding Shareholder Returns
                      Terrific Businesses
Protected by Strong Barriers--"The Moat Effect"
People Are the Company's Most Important Asset
Outstanding Management Team That Keeps the Company in "Prime"
Innovation Driven Company That Turns Changes into Opportunties

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This portfolio is is a safe haven.......2001-10-11

I've been following this portfolio [as a fund in my Yahoo screens], and I have seen it perform quite well. I bought the book in early 2000. I went back to check the stock performance of each of the companies mentioned since Dec. 31, 1999. and here is a brief history:

Jan - March 2000 "the dot com crash": Portfolio showed weakness as analysts praised new economy and trashed old economy. Portfolio of companies was down about 17%.

March - July 2000: Portfolio gained back its losses as investors returned to blue chip investments.

August - December 2000: Portfolio showed strength as market turned sour and uncertain as election foes killed the markets.

Dec. 31, 2000: Portfolio of 14 companies was up 16%. Not bad compared to NASDAQ and DOW Jones performace.

Year to Date 2001: Portfolio has given back its gains but is showing resilience as of late,

All in all, only down 3% from investment in January 1, 2000.

The book is a great reference for these companies and I agree with the company strengths and weaknesses.

                      3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2000-05-03

Not a lot of new material here. I have always invested in these types of companies anyway. The major thing that I have a problem with is that there's no guarantee that these companies will continue to do well, althought they certainly have a good chance, and they still need to be followed closely. If their fundamentals deteriorate they need to be sold unless you really think with certainty that it's a temporary problem. For example, I question wheter Coke, Gillette and Proctor and Gamble will come back. They have had problems for years and I see no sign of those problems being put behind them, though some may disagree with me. I also think you need to pay attention to paying the proper price for these companies. Paying too much for them will shoot your investing results to hell. My only other criticism is that the pick of these companies and not others that seem to show the same charactoristics seems somewhat arbitrary. For example, Chase Manhattan Bank is probably every bit as good as Citigroup (and I own both so that doesn't factor in to this) but it doesn't make the cut. Morgan Stanley is as good or better a company as Merrill Lynch, but for some reason, doesn't make the list etc. I think the list could probably be a little bit longer, like 20-25 names, and then a reader could pick and choose based on valuations, familiarity with the company's business model etc. and still put together a reasonably sized portfolio. All in all, a good strategy as long as you don't overpay. You could do a lot worse than investing part of your portfolio in these kinds of multinational companies. Just don't lock the stocks away in a drawer somewhere and never look at them, and think that they're invincible. If you like this type of book, meaning a book with certain criteria to use for picking stocks, Rule Breakers, Rule Makers is a book you'd probably like. Just stick with the Rule Maker part of the book, and stick with multinantional companies, and you'll wind up with the same types of companies spoken of here.

The author had at least one glaring factual error -- Nokia's a Finnish, not Japanese company -- but the essence of this book is no less solid. The advice here is mostly repackaged from other sources in a form that is very useful and insightful. It's a lot common sense, but there are a few key insights that I found very influential:

                      * These companies have competitive advantages and tremendous staying power. * They are extremely recession-resistant and globally diversified (important in bear markets and recessions, which we will inevitably encounter again sometime in the future) * Because of their unique advantages they have unparalleled track records of continued above-average earnings growth

The author shows how a disciplined strategy of investing in these companies beats the market over the long-term. I think this advice, combined with dollar-cost averaging, is very useful.

On a personal note, I have just started assembling my portfolio, and unfortunately I have been obsessing too much over finding the best values, not overpaying, and worrying about whether prices on such companies are too high. I have also been struggling with whether to adopt an aggressive, mostly technology portfolio composition . This strategy has a place in a good portion of my portfolio and will be combined with tech stocks and some small- and mid-caps. The author shows that these companies are richly valued for good reasons and will continue to be highly valued for their consistent earnings growth. Also, I think that such a strategy is a better alternative to the S&P 500 index, which many people use to make sure they don't underperform the large cap market. Clearly, you can outperform the index by emphasizing quality companies and consistently investing in them over the long-term.

3 out of 5 stars a nice book to begin with.......2000-02-12

presents some interesting techniques to evaluate companies (his 12 criteria) but simplifies these criteria too much. for someone looking to develop his/her own stock-picking philosophy, this is a nice book to begin with.

the author mentions many other books which the reader can refer to for more detailed discussions.

the last 100 pages (1/3 of the book) are basically useless.

maybe best to make this a library book.

                      5 out of 5 stars Immensely Sensible.......2000-01-12

Huguet realizes that many investors are frustrated by the fact that the performance of their investment portfolio is below their expectations. They are often confused about the world of investing. Because they are busy people, they are frequently short of time. Many rely primarily on indexing. Others have just begun their investment journey. They pay too much in taxes. They are concerned about pre-retirement investing. Or they are retired and fear that they will outlive their money. They may be concerned about financing the education of children or grandchildren. "Is there an investment strategy which will produce great returns over the long-term cycle of bull and bear markets?" Huguet asked himself this question and then began rigorous and extensive research to answer it. Great Companies, Great Returns is the result of his research.

Essentially, Huguet concluded that there are certain stocks which every investor should own. Which stocks? He next concluded that there are a few great American companies in which to invest, companies whose stocks will produce outstanding, tax-efficient returns in a variety of market conditions. OK but which Great Companies? He identifies and then explains his selections.

The strategy which Huguet advocates makes compelling sense for those whose long-term investment objectives are to maximize returns while minimizing risks and taxes, and thereby achieving the greatest returns (over time) from publicly-traded stocks. Large-cap companies really do have significant strategic advantages over their smaller-cap counterparts. Of these, Huguet has selected only 14. If a reader of Great Companies, Great Returns has a better combination of traits and/or a better selection of Great Companies in which to invest, Huguet would be delighted to know. (So would I.)

I rate his book so highly for two reasons: Huguet's rationale for long-term investment is sound, and, while explaining his reasons for it, he provides a brilliant analysis of the companies in which he believes such an investment should be made. My guess is that this book will be most valuable to those who need both the rationale and the research in support of it.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling, disturbing read.......2007-02-22

The events that inspired this book occurred over 15 years ago, but if you want to understand what is going on now in the world politically and economically, especially in terms of US-European-Middle Eastern-Third World relations, this is still very timely.

Outlaw Bank is an excellent and far-reaching piece of well-documented investigative reporting that carefully uncovers the BCCI scandal and the ensuing US cover-up attempts. The sheer scope of the corruption, the deception, the narcotics and clandestine weapons trade involving US government agencies, personnel, and very well-known politicians is stunning. Not only is it as bad as you imagined in your wildest dreams, but many of the same people are still exerting influence (James Baker, Jimmy Carter). BCCI may be gone, but after reading this book and then looking around, you will conclude that not a thing has really changed.

The book for the most part stays away from hyperbole, and while I found it a little difficult going in some of the explanations of financial transactions, I realized often that's because I just couldn't believe what I was reading!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent account of a widely misunderstood phenomenon.......2004-09-25

Beaty and Gwynne do an excellent job tackling the Leviathan that was BCCI. With so many labrynthine angles to pursue, this book does a terrific job of presenting them to the reader in clear and lucid terms. With a keen eye for crafting a good story, they keep your interest throughout by adding a bit of detective story flavor. Indeed, just investigating this story has always been dangerous for journalists and public servants--many deaths are associated with BCCI.
This book would be a timely read right now, as many of the players involved in BCCI still exercise huge influence on world affairs. Though published in 1993, the book details very accurately our current president's involvement with figures closely connected to the drug and arms dealing that was a huge part of the BCCI network, not to mention the funding of international terrorists, including the bin-Ladens.
Long before Michael Moore, and much more academic, these writers had no idea that they were doing the world a great service by helping to uncover the massive corruption of our own government and its decades of business dealings with terrorists and criminals throughout the Middle East and the world, despite their overt lying to the contrary. Read it before the election.

While most analyses of BCCI saw it as a banking scandal, Beaty and Gwynne correctly understood and colorfully present its true nature: as the deepest and most detailed glimpse anyone has so far had into the real workings of the underground economy. Their findings, which have never been challenged or refuted, have only grown more urgent with time. This book will not only tell you where Osama-types come from, it will tell you how and why they can thrive -- or not. That it was written before anyone knew who bin Laden was makes it all that more extraordinary.

Not a bad report of what took place although the topic could be a bit dry for the average reader. The dust jacket tries to make the book out to be a bit sexier then it really is. The authors do a good job or moving the story along but I did expect more from Beaty. I think what is interesting is some of the same move movement issues covered within the book are now coming to the forefront with the current crack down on terrorists. If you are interested in the topic of international banking then this book will be interesting.

For better or worse, most of us have at least one of the 720 million little plastic cards that are used each year to complete $860 billion worth of purchases at 15 million incredibly varied merchant locations throughout the world. This is a far cry from the humble beginnings of these myriad credit, debit, and charge cards, which just a few decades ago were generally a perk offered only to elite customers for the acquisition of fine meals, hotel rooms, department-store goods, and oil-company products. They are now so common and such an integral part of our economy, in fact, that few pay them much mind--a situation that makes David Evans and Richard Schmalensee's Paying with Plastic all the more interesting. Evans, senior vice president of National Economics Research Associates, and Schmalensee, dean of MIT's Sloan School of Management, meticulously trace the history of these cards from both the consumer and merchant perspectives in this surprisingly appealing volume, which will prove enlightening to anyone who ever wondered how plastic money works. --Howard Rothman

                      Book Description

Since Diners Club issued its first charge cards in 1950, payment cards -- credit, debit, and charge cards -- have revolutionized how and whenwe pay for goods and services. In Paying with Plastic, David Evans and Richard Schmalensee provide a nontechnical distillation of their years of research on the economic, technological, and institutional forces that have shaped the payment card industry. They show how competition works in an industry that does not neatly fit any of the standard economic models. They describe how the payment card companies such as MasterCard and Visa have developed complex systems for coordinating transactions among their thousands of bank members and millions of cardholders and accepting merchants. Evans and Schmalensee also describe recent developments in the industry and consider its likely evolution.

If you work in the payments, credit card or finance industry this book is great. It has a very easy to read history about credit cards, who knew Diners Club invented the category in the 50's. But more importantly is how the industry is moving forward and progressing.

Overall, this is a book you read if you need to, but I can't imagine anyone outside the industry reading it. You would have to be the most intellecually curious person in the world if you read this cause you were interested in how credit cards work.

                      4 out of 5 stars Great book!!.......2006-01-04

I loved this book and how the author talks about the fine points of credit cards and how American consumers got hooked into it. A terrific read and it is money well spent, although FREE shipping would have been nice!

5 out of 5 stars What's old will be new again.......2005-10-24

Paying with Plastic first edition has been revamped, rewritten and repositioned here with edition number two.

Most important, Paying with Plastic "2.0" addresses new developments of online payment processing. The authors correctly begin to question the requirement of a merchant set top box for reading "antiquated magnetic stripes".

"Old is new" item #1. Frank McNamara's Diners Club platform would cost about $50,000 to set up today. What's the next mutiny of merchants?

Old is new item #2. Sears starting up Discover and getting to more merchants tha American Express -all within 2 years. Moore's law (doubling within time) would suggest the next Discover would ramp up in less time.

Old is new #3. Industries in decline, lobby best. The payment industry's recently raised interchange rates. Does technology cost more?! No, but growth is stagnant.

Old is new #4. Whoops, John Reed (ex-ceo of Citibank) pulled their Visa membership (p14) and moved the Mastercard logo to the back. Why?! Pull the entire Citi into a closed loop - Citi wanted to be like Amex and Discover. There will be more banks doing this like Chase (Octogon) or MBNA (PayPass).

Old is new #5. Wal-mart as a bank. See Sears above in #2. Wal-marts pays fees to V/MC/D/Amex but they'd rather charge fees and lend money. Why just make $2.00 on the VCR when you can make $10 on the financing. By the way, I like the payment system name, "Wallycard"... just kidding.

                      5 out of 5 stars A remarkable accomplishment.......2005-07-11

It is a very difficult and ambitious task to write a book about an industry combining indispensable facts and history, fundamental business aspects and subtle economic insights. Yet this is precisely what the authors have done for credit cards, the digital quantum leap in the evolution of payment instruments. It is a very rewarding and fun read, providing the equivalent of a comprehensive 3D animated view of the organization of credit card companies (not-for-profit associations like Visa or for-profit firms like American Express) and of the complex ecosystem that surrounds them: banks, merchants, cardholders, regulators, ATM networks, etc.
And the "lens" of "multi-sided platforms" that Evans and Schmalensee use to conduct their analysis turns out to be so appealing and insightful that one wonders how economists, policy-makers, business people and even casual observers managed to make any sense of this industry before.

                      5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2005-05-09

In this history of payment cards, David S. Evans and Richard Schmalensee provide an amazingly lucid account of a couple of unusual business models: the "two-sided platform," which in the use of payment cards means walking a tightrope between the interests of merchants and consumers; and the "co-opetitive," in which the bank members of MasterCard and Visa cooperate in developing industry practices while competing for business. The authors, who are both former Visa consultants, sound like your favorite college professors - up to date and extremely sophisticated, yet friendly and anecdotal (at one point, they describe a Shell gas station near MIT to make a point about competition among cards). They typically begin chapters with easily understood notions from which they methodically build complex structures of ideas and information. Another virtue of the book is its concreteness - although that occasionally devolves into repetitiveness - starting with an explanation involving electronic signals and following the paper path of what happens when you hand your credit, debit or charge card to a cashier. The authors even consider the design and manufacture of the cards themselves. We recommend this book as essential reading for those in the banking or payment card industries; and it's not a bad idea for card users to read it - which these days means you...and just about everyone else.

                        Book Description

Alfred Marshall (1842-1924) was the foremost British economist of his time. Among his areas of expertise was monetary analysis. Written in 1923, MONEY, CREDIT, AND COMMERCE devoted to this subject, is his last major work.

Among the proposals made in this work for which Marshall is most remembered is the adoption of symmetallism, a plan for the combined use of gold and silver as the monetary base. He expresses his views on the relation of business fluctuations and the credit market to general unemployment. Marshall also sees reckless inflation of credit as the main source of economic instability.

MONEY, CREDIT, AND COMMERCE remains a valuable work for students of economics and monetary policy.

From the supplier: Security managers who aim to secure their companies' electronic commerce operations must evaluate the various aspects of computer network security before coming up with solutions designed to address security risks in the online market. These include identifying the phases of the transaction which need protection such as data pipes, end points, web servers and web clients. Hacking can be prevented through the use of firewalls, encryption and authentication. Online security may also be enhanced by using secured payment systems from third-party suppliers.
