Boring.......2002-06-15

This is a really boring book. As you read it, you're always waiting to get to the interesting part that never really arrives. Hotten's writing style is very dry and the book reads like a textbook. He also constantly repeats the same things over and over again - yes, I already know that F1 is very expensive, Ferrari is passionate and Williams has great engineering.

Even the layout of the book can get frustrating. The chapters don't flow well and the whole book comes off as being incoherent and repetitive. Hotten should have gathered all his facts and then let someone else write and edit the book for him, probably down to about half its current size. I'm not sure if I can recommend another book for people interested in learning about the F1 business, but I can certainly advise against getting this one.

There is alot more to F1 than the racing.......2001-04-18

This book examines the sport outside of the actual racing. The cost of the series, the sponsorship, and the politics. It also examines the history of the sport to show how the sport evolved into what it is today. It highlights a few teams as examples of the way the teams approach the f1 environment. It is an interesting sport where Michael Schmaucher makes more in a year than the total budget of some of the less competative teams (i.e. Arrows). Don't be fooled by the Nov 2000 publication date. This is a book that was written in 1998 and then published for the US market in 2000. There is a final chapter that I am sure was supposed to be substituted for the original final chapter (It is in large part a cut and paste of the original final chapter), but due to poor editing both chapters are included in the book. Overall I enjoyed the book and found that it really helped my understanding of the sport. Before this book, I could never understand how the underfunded teams survived.

An informative behind the scenes look at Formula One.......1999-08-23

A well written book covering the various players (the teams, FIA, advertising, sponsors and the media) that make up Formula One today. The book traces the origins of the sport and how it has evolved into the media event that it is today.

The book is an easy read and makes watching Formula One racing more interesting.

It is indeed! It is a book about the unbelievable efforts made to transport gold and silver from New Spain and Peru to Spain between the 15th and 18th century, how these precious metals initiated worldwide commerce, about the rise and fall of the Spanish/ Habsburg empire and how it helped European countries to become economic and political world powers. Waltons book moves through three centuries of world history in an appropriate pace, without leaving out interesting details. It simply is a fascinating book!

Good, But not nearly enough........ Poor format. .......2006-10-31

I will start by saying this is still a Must-Have Book, if you are at all interested in the subject, and for what is actually IN the book I have little criticism. But its a little like wine tasting for an alcoholic, far, far too little to slake that thirst. And frankly, I'm judging the Publisher more than the Author, here. By point:
1st: It's tiny, a 6"x9" format is hardly appropriate.
2nd: Noel Wells is CHIEF CONSERVATOR for the Mel Fisher Center. WHY are there no COLOR plates , and why are there SO MANY Line Drawings of Artifacts that the author obviously has Carte Blanche access to ?? Very disappointing, to say the least. I really blame the publisher for these mistakes. They should have known the intended market for these books, and published accordingly. They have one of the Premier Experts in this field, with presumably unlimited access to never published artifacts, and this was all they could come up with ? Two examples stand out for publishing excellence in Collector / Historian references:

Rattenbury's "Packin' Iron" for a Color Book, which is also excellent research as well, and Hamilton's "Colonial Frontier Guns" for a Black and White book. Both are solid, scholarly works, with excellent formats and photos. They are what the next edition of THIS work should be. Rock Bottom Press, you seem rather aptly named.
3rd: Too little text, also. While I have almost no complaint for what is there, its still a little on the "overview" side, and most of the chapters could have been at least twice the length, probably just in additional artifacts and narratives on them , alone.
All in all, put it on your shelf, but keep your eyes out for a re- formatted reprint, or another work that addresses this works flaws. I would LOVE to see Mr.Wells publish a larger, better work. He obviously has the experiance & depth of knowledge, he just needs to get a better publisher!

This is certainly one of the MOST attractively laid out, comprehensive and well-illustrated books of its kind. Destined to become a classic in its genre! No student of the material should be without it. Academics and laymen alike will enjoy it and,no doubt, will make reference to it for years to come. Excellent work!

Anyone interested in the Spanish Treasure Fleet era will want this book. And, as any comprehensive guide should have, the book contains tons of illustrations and wonderful photographs of actual historic weapons, some of which even the worlds foremost collectors have never seen.
This is a highly specialized compilation of weaponry from one of the most interesting time periods in history, and Wells proves that he is the foremost authority on the subject.

The ideas behind economic democracy and financial participation are not new--the first International Congress on profit-sharing met in Paris in 1889. The principle that lay behind the idea was to generate an economic democracy in line with the political system. Since this time, many schemes have met with both mixed reactions and differing levels of success.

In Economic Democracy and Financial Participation, Daryl D'Art pursues two objectives. He examines the question of whether profit sharing schemes and employee shareholding can motivate workers and generate cooperative striving, and if so, under what conditions. He also identifies the schemes of financial participation which have the potential to attain economic democracy within the individual firm and the wider society. D'Art draws on the results of research carried out in the United States, Sweden, Denmark, and Ireland, and contrasts an individualist approach to economic democracy with a collectivist approach. The result is acomparative international analysis of financial participation at both a theoretical and practical level.
