Formula One: The Business of Winning
Russell Hotten Manufacturer: Orion Publishing Group, ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0752812076 |
Amazon.com
Auto racing is one of the world's top spectator sports, and Russell Hotten's Winning thoroughly examines the larger-than-life personalities, cutting-edge technologies and over-the-top commercial triumphs that mark the stunningly successful British-based Grand Prix circuit. Hotten, financial news editor at London's Mail on Sunday newspaper, notes at the start that an entire March-through-October Formula One racing season actually consumes less time than a single typical work week--although its outsized entertainment and business benefits are ridden full bore year-round. Written from a Brit's global perspective, his book fully explains the sky-high stakes that result when every two-hour race on alternating Sundays is watched by 350 million enthusiasts in over 200 countries. "Only the Olympics and (soccer's) World Cup surpass these viewing figures," Hotten writes, "but they only take place every four years." As such F1 has become an international commercial phenomenon, even if its U.S. appeal is dampened by America's fascination with homegrown NASCAR and Indy racing. Everything is in place for even more growth, though, and Hotten tells all about the "fast cars, wealth, glamour, sex, danger" and controversies (such as the big-money sponsorships by tobacco companies). Race fans worldwide, as well as those interested in the general business of sports, will likely find Winning a winner. --Howard RothmanBook Description
In this penetrating book, Russell Hotten examines, for the first time, the business and finance of Formula One. In particular, he explains the often complex web of team owners, drivers, engineers, sponsors, and the media that has turned Formula One into such a rich and glamorous sport. The book profiles the sport's movers and shakers (Bernie Ecclestone, Max Mosley, Frank Williams, and Eddie Jordan) and its multi-millionaire drivers (Michael Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve). It examines the vital role of the engineers and designers who have propelled Formula One into a new age of machine technology. And it also looks at the future of the sport that is increasingly being driven by the demands of sponsors and the media.Customer Reviews:
Boring.......2002-06-15
Even the layout of the book can get frustrating. The chapters don't flow well and the whole book comes off as being incoherent and repetitive. Hotten should have gathered all his facts and then let someone else write and edit the book for him, probably down to about half its current size. I'm not sure if I can recommend another book for people interested in learning about the F1 business, but I can certainly advise against getting this one.
There is alot more to F1 than the racing.......2001-04-18
An informative behind the scenes look at Formula One.......1999-08-23
The book is an easy read and makes watching Formula One racing more interesting.

Florida's Golden Galleons - The Search for the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet

Book Description
On July 24, 1715, a Spanish treasure fleet sailed from Havana, carrying a cargo of 14 million pesos in gold, silver and jewels. In the Florida Straits, near present-day Cape Canaveral, the fleet ran into a hurricane, with the disastrous loss of ten ships and 700 lives. Little was salvaged at the time. For more than two centuries, sand and sea held their secrets well. Occasionally, however, tides and storms tossed blackened silver coins up on the beaches, tempting would-be treasure hunters. Among the most successful was the Real Eight Company, contracted by the state of Florida to recover the valuable treasure and historical artifacts under the supervision of state underwater archaeologist Carl J. Clausen. Spurred by the unique finds on the ocean floor and curious about the full story behind the tragic event that had scattered this fabulous treasure along Florida's east coast, he and Robert F. Burgess determined to record the history of the ill-fated fleet. In writing their book, the authors needed the answers to hundreds of questions. What was it like to cross the Atlantic in the eighteenth century? What precautions were taken against pirates? What caused the delays that led to sailing at a particularly treacherous time of the year? What really happened the night of the hurricane? How much treasure was lost? How many people survived? The authors discovered that pieces of the historical jigsaw puzzle lay scattered all over the world. They examined hundreds of documents recovered from dusty archives: official statements, depositions, royal court orders, private and public letters, and ships' manifests. After ten years of research, the authors finally had all the facts, which enabled them to reconstruct the story. Florida's Golden Galleons is that stunning story, meticulously detailed and excitingly told, of the sinking of the great fleet and of the successful modern-day efforts to bring its treasure once more to the light of day.Customer Reviews:

Economic Democracy and Financial Participation: A Comparative Study
Daryl D'Art Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0415062152 |
Book Description
The ideas behind economic democracy and financial participation are not new--the first International Congress on profit-sharing met in Paris in 1889. The principle that lay behind the idea was to generate an economic democracy in line with the political system. Since this time, many schemes have met with both mixed reactions and differing levels of success.
In
Economic Democracy and Financial Participation, Daryl D'Art pursues two objectives. He examines the question of whether profit sharing schemes and employee shareholding can motivate workers and generate cooperative striving, and if so, under what conditions. He also identifies the schemes of financial participation which have the potential to attain economic democracy within the individual firm and the wider society. D'Art draws on the results of research carried out in the United States, Sweden, Denmark, and Ireland, and contrasts an individualist approach to economic democracy with a collectivist approach. The result is acomparative international analysis of financial participation at both a theoretical and practical level.
