                        Book Description

The papers in this volume empirically examine three evolving and important topics in financial economics: the determinants of monetary and bank efficiency and the key factors that contribute to successful monetary and banking operations; the institutional factors that enhance or detract from the efficient manner in which financial markets work; and the macro, micro, and social factors that impact stock valuation and optimum portfolio selection.

This is a global look at how various infrastructures might be needed to change, to meet needs in 2030. One major area is telecom. Even in developed countries, extensive buildout is still occurring. Some trends include WiFi hotspots continuing to proliferate. Perhaps other technologies might supplant this. Nevertheless, there is clearly an unfilled need for more wireless access, at affordable rates.

Another telecom aspect is the usage of long distance fiber. Currently, there is still an overinvestment in the US, and part of Europe, as part of the legacy from the dot com and telecom craze of the 90s. But the anticipation is that new usages will ultimately fill this fiber.

The needs of the developing world also get attention. Here, fiber and wireless are considered to be very strong growth areas. Indeed, the book projects that by 2030, global subscribers from all nations to mobile and fixed telecoms will be 6.5 billion, from a current estimate of 3.1 billion in 2005. Ways to go!

                              Book Description

Providing an in-depth case study of a highly successful public-private partnership, this book offers valuable insights for privatizing an existing public service. A mix of theory and empirical analysis, the study initially creates and explains a model for the Privatization Transfer Process, which serves as a guide for contracting out services. Drawing on the experience of the Orlando Orange County Expressway Authority when it privatized toll road operations, the book traces the steps taken through the initial decision to privatize, the creation of the Request for Proposal, and the review and rating of three bidder responses. It then follows the awarding of the bid to the Florida Toll Services and the transition from public to private control. The book also considers technical and pricing concerns as well as issues pertaining to contract management. In conclusion, it evaluates the entire effort. By offering a detailed analysis of a very successful privatization experience, the book provides a useful tool for those concerned with privatization issues.

Since the late 1970s China has made extensive policy reforms and infrastructure investments. Although there have been significant investments made over the past decades, most of these investments came from the public sector. The goal of this report is to help improve China's approach to private participation in infrastructure focusing on roads, water and sanitation, and power generation by expanding foreign direct investment and domestic financing in such projects. It compares China's experience with those of other countries.

                                  Book Description

In this compelling, readable narrative, Joe Sherman explores virtually every aspect of the Saturn project, America's biggest and most publicized industrial success of the last decade. Here is the whole story--Saturn's mysterious beginnings inside General Motors in 1982; the site hunt that involved 38 states and ended in Spring Hill, Tennessee; the plant's construction and the transfer of 5,000 UAW members to a historic Southern backwater; and finally the small car's triumph in the marketplace (Consumer Reports and J.D. Powers both dubbed Saturn a made-in-America breakthrough)--all woven together into a candid, panoramic tapestry. In the Rings of Saturn has a striking immediacy: the reader sees almost first-hand GM's 1991 Annual Meeting at the Grand Ole Opry led by chairman Robert Stempel, as gadfly stockholders turn the event into a parody. We spend a week on the crankshaft machining line under the care of paternal, bearlike teamleader Bob Courtemanche, experiencing Saturn's revolutionary but troubled team structure. We even drive around with Spring Hill's flamboyant, tobacco-spitting mayor George Jones, who tells Sherman that the difference between a "Yankee" and a "damned Yankee" is "a Yankee comes here and goes home; a damned Yankee stays." Dozens of characters, from local farmers, to inspired assembly line workers, to "car smarts and gut feel" engineers, move across these pages. Through these flesh-and-blood portraits, Sherman brings to life a very American story of renewal and growth, of great hope and soured expectations, of greed and lost opportunities. And he reveals as well the downside of the project--that while the car itself is a triumph, the project has failed to provide either the learning laboratory General Motors needed or a model for positive redevelopment rural America yearns for. In the Rings of Saturn is both the anatomy of a corporate triumph and an incisive commentary on industrial renewal in the United States. And it exposes the high hopes and earthshattering disappointments that occur when big business appears in rural areas. It is a volume that will enlighten business readers, inform the automotive industry, and entertain Saturn car buyers, many of whom will think: "My little car means all this?"

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful study of a new concept being born.......1999-07-18

This was a great book. It showed how an old bureaucracy like GM could manage to set up a car company that will change how cars are made and sold into the next century. Good insight into the fighting, working, changing, struggling, and wining that has made Saturn a model for companies that want to cherish their customers and turn them into salesmen for their products. If you wonder how your Saturn got to be so unique this is the book for you.

                                        Book Description

Today, Central American countries face a lack of sufficient transport infrastructure as well as high transport costs. These problems have led to a decline in the competitiveness of the regional economies and sluggish economic growth rates. This paper argues that short sea shipping can play an important role in creating the pathway towards a more environmentally friendly, financially rational and sustainable transport system, and it is eminently suitable as a solution to bridge the Central America infrastructural gaps.

This important book examines the "stories" of 300 women who have somehow overcome all manner of barriers in a work environment to achieve success in their career. Swiss duly acknowledges that many of these barriers are unintentional. In this instance, the problem presumably is one of ignorance. OK, but we all know that there are many in the work environment (intimidated females as well as self-serving males) who are well aware of these barriers and either tolerate them or defend them. In this instance, the problem is one of attitude. Whatever, many barriers are illegal; the remaining barriers are dumb (because precious human assets are underutilized) and/or punitive (because someone feels threatened). The 300 women who are "on the leading edge of change" are to be commended for their achievement. But let's not lose sight of a key point: Most (if not all) of them should not have had to experience the resistance, at times the hostility and perhaps even the abuse, they did.

This book (published in 1996) is based on the results of a survey in which 300 women participated. When "Taking Stock", Swiss shares several facts about women at work, at least in 1996:

                                        * The salary gap mirrors the gender gap.

                                        * Moving women into the managerial pipeline has done little to advance deserving ones into senior management.

                                        * Gender, not talent, is often the deciding factor in who is offered committee leadership or the golden client.

                                        * Progressive policies on paper are meaningless in the absence of support from top management and line supervisors.

                                        * Sexual harassment continues to be a silent partner in maintaining an unsupportive work enviroment for women.

                                        * Gender bias, not parenting responsibilities, is the factor most likely to slow a woman's advancement.

Granted, since 1996, there has been substantial improvement in at least some of these areas and men in the workplace deserve at least a portion of the credit. However, there should be zero tolerance of any illegal or inappropriate behavior in the work environment. Period. During the course of Women Breaking Through, Swiss focuses on "10 obstacles at work." Based on the results from the survey, she offers equally specific suggestions as to how to eliminate those barriers.

At some point, hopefully very soon, there will no longer be a need for a book such as this. But our society is nowhere near that point yet. There have been so many important technological "break-throughs" in the business world just within the past few years, most notably the WWW. If we can develop highly sophisticated machines, why can't we also develop highly sophisticated people for whom the behavior Swiss and others have cited is unconscionable? It's time.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for every woman that wants to move up!.......1998-02-14

I loved this book, I wish I had it when I started my career 12 years ago. The advice in the book can be used as your little "female executive mentor" guide. Men executives should also read this to better understand how some of their behavior or comments are taken by their female employees.
