Buy It, You Won't Regret It!.......2003-08-06
I bought this book a few years ago, right before I moved to a new city. I have to say it is one of the BEST books, if not THE best book available for writing that all-important resume. Contrary to the individual who said it needed updated due to resumes being entered and searched via a database, I think the book is just fine as it is. This book does NOT tell you how to write a traditional resume, which is probably why the reviewer didn't think it worked and needed updated for database search...it isn't formatted like the online resume searches. However, it does instruct the reader on how to write something even better: a Qualifications Brief. A resume and a qualifications brief are similar and are meant to do the same things, but whereas a resume describes a persons past positions and his or her responsibilities, a QB describes the actual QUALIFICATIONS the person has that makes him or her the right candidate for the specific job for which he or she is applying. That makes all the difference to the employer, who gathers his or her important first impression of the applicant from the submitted dull resume or uniquely different QB. I know from personal experience: I sent out two QBs after I moved and I got call-backs for BOTH submissions. I'm currently in my 5th year of employment for one of them. I also wrote a QB up for a friend of mine and she too got hired within days of sending it out. Neither of us have ever had such prompt responses when sending out a normal, traditional resume. My advice: buy this book; it's definitely worth every penny!
Good material for building a job search campaign.......2000-08-02
This is an excellent book. Together with other books, this is what is needed in a job search. The author has done a great job in pulling together the elements which spell success in the quest for employment. I recommend it.

Do you have the guts to change?.......2000-06-01
When I was out of work, and wanting to make a career change, I went to the library and, literally, checked out a three foot stack of resume and cover letter books.
I sat them next to my couch, got a glass of iced tea and went to work perusing the pages. Right away it was evident that, for the most part, the only thing different about these how to tomes was their cover. Inside was the same tired advice and the same over used examples of resumes and cover letters.
Guess what? As an employee candidate your job is to stand out from the crowd, not blend in with it.
I had just about given up on my reading (and was getting more depressed by the minute) when I came across "Who's Hiring Who?" I could tell right away that it was different, the question was, would I have the guts to run free, as the book encouraged, or would I continue to run with the herd?
When I read "Who's Hiring Who" I was three months into a job search. After this much time spent looking for work (and I was at it 12 hours a day!) I told myself that my resume, which took form based upon a lot of the ancient advice in the mainstream resume books, wasn't working and I wasn't going to lose anything by trying the advice in "Who's Hiring Who?"
It took me a week to read the book, really think about the suggestions it made, and then distill it's principles into my new QUALIFICAITONS BRIEF. No more resumes! Other no mores? No more worrying about a spotty work history. No more worrying about an incomplete (that means little or no college) education. The book tells you the best ways to accentuate the positive and marginalize the negative.
Within two weeks I had several job offers on the table. Within a month I had done more than get a job, I had successfully changed careers and was working for a hot software company with benefits out the wazoo and a pay rate higher than I'd hoped for!
(Since then I've read Tom Peter's book, "Circle of Innovation" (I think that was the book), which, when talking about resumes says who cares about education, companies want to know what you've done. What have your successes been? This is one thing "Who's Hiring Who?" focuses on.)
My advice to you? Buy the book, follow its advice and have the guts to change!
Not sure if this book is still useful in 2000........2000-04-12
I used to think that this was the best resume book on the market. It helps you to understand that a resume should be something carefully crafted and designed with a goal in mind. I'm just not sure how useful it is in 2000. Today your resume is entered into a database and a search is done on key words to find you. This book needs to be updated. The last update was in 1989. A lot has changed in the hiring industry since then. Why has this book not been updated?
The job search book that worked for me........1999-08-09
For a book to claim that its advice will land you a job invites skepticism--yet it worked for me. Back in 1984, after months of cobbling together four or five part-time jobs to pay the rent, I bought Richard Lathrop's Who's Hiring Who, did what it said, and landed my present job as social science abstractor within two months.
Now it is out--in a new edition--from Ten Speed Press. If the recently published update is as good as its original (which was 1983), you can do worse than buy the book and, as the blurb suggests, do what it says--you just might land your dream job.
And Amazon.com--shame on you for not having this edition in stock!

Product Description
Underperforming salespeople are perhaps the greatest cause of frustration to sales executives and financial loss to business owners. The cost of hiring and keeping a bad salesperson can range from six to seven figures annually. To make matters worse, many companies waste money by trying to train sales skills in people who will never improve. Research shows that the most important factor for success is a salesperson's Drive - the inner fire that ultimately determines if he will thrive or fail. This critical trait is hardwired by adulthood, and cannot be improved with sales training. The job interview process must accurately evaluate Drive to identify future superstars and avoid underperformers. However, research shows that Drive is one of the toughest traits for interviewers to rate, and one of the easiest traits for candidates to fake. To make matters worse, many sales managers hire based on gut instinct. Thus, they are severely disappointed later. This book provides: * Psychological research behind the three elements of Drive * A valid hiring process for selecting top performers * Interview questions to accurately determine whether a candidate is driven

On the Money.......2007-10-23
Kevin Cushing - CEO, AlphaGraphics, Inc.
This book really resonates with me as CEO. It offers solid conclusions from strong research, and a no-nonsense guide to separating the pretenders from potential sales providers in the selection process. We have gone on to use the DriveTest© referenced in the book and it has raised our selection game significantly. I highly recommend this as an important new resource for all hiring managers.
A Helpful Resource.......2007-09-07
I'm Vice President of Sales for a stainless steel manufacturer, and have found this book very helpful in our sales hiring process. The book has given us a solid strategy to make sure we hire only those with the potential to be top producers. The interview techniques were easy to use and very revealing. I recommend the book to anyone who wants to hire "hunters" to grow their business.
Terrific Stuff... We're all over it........2007-08-27
It's incredibly frustrating to hire and invest in salespeople who flame out. This research, these interview questions and the tools the people provide, jump start the whole hiring process in the right direction. Authors also do a great job in translating complex findings into understandable concepts. Extemely valuable and user friendly to anyone hiring salespeople.
first 4 reviews must be brothers-in-law.......2007-07-20
This is an entry level interviewing book, with a strong sales pitch on using the author to administer testing & provide services to help you make better hires. It is a marketing brochure for consulting services hidden in a book you had to pay for...I do agree that you need to hire driven candidates (imagine that?) and that you better figure it out before you hire them, but the book offers damn little to get you there...except of course to use the author's testing and interviewing services.
skip it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Coming from a Sales Recruiter!.......2006-12-20
If you are responsible for recruiting salespeople, buy this book. It will save you a lot of stress and hassle in the interview process. I learned exactly what to say, and, more importantly, what not to say, to make sure I get the most accurate read on a candidate. This book has sharpened my approach and accuracy. This is the best book of its kind that I've seen in the marketplace. It's easy to use and helps keep me and my managers out of legal hot water.
However, it is softcover, not hard cover as advertised on this site.

GRAMMY AWAARD NOMINEE
The Wonderful O tells of a man named Black who despised the letter "O." He deleted it from his language and omitted it from his words. Opals, moonstones, owls and oaks could not possibly be his items of choice. He preferred emeralds, rubies, sapphires and maps. At least they had no "O." Soon he wanted his entire village to omit the letter "O." But the villagers found words they would not do without- HOPE, LOVE, VALOR, and the most important one of all.
Customer Reviews:
Chas and cnfusin reign supreme.......2003-12-31
"The Wonderful O" is a delightful book for our younger readers about a dastardly group of pirates who invade the island of Ooroo looking for treasure. Oh wow, with a name like Ooroo, this place is just asking for trouble. Seems that Black, the pirate chief, hates the letter O, because when he was a child his mother got stuck in a porthole, and he couldn't pull her in, so he had to push her out. Poor Moms. And now Black is about to consolidate his capture and takeover of Ooroo by banishing from speech and print every word and name which contains the letter O. So how are we to pronounce Ooroo? Or Otto Ott, whose name comes out sounding like a terminal stutter? Or consider the case of poor Ophelia Oliver, who, when she lost her O's, vanished from the haunts of men.
Thurber has written a hilarious book showing the pure chas and cnfusin that reign when the language is stripped of its O's. How can you tell a cat from a cat? Or a bat from a bat? Strip the O from the language and we will all be indeed bgne and webegne. Not to mention losing words like hope, love, valor, and the greatest of all, freedom.
Black may have stripped the language of all its O's but he can't break the people's spirit, and eventually he and his crew hoist anchor and sail away into the sunset, leaving the people and their island with all their O's intact. Kids will love this book for the hilarious play on words, as well as for the message it gets across. A wonderful bk (oops, I mean book) for youngsters and oldsters alike. How could there be youngsters, or oldsters, or books, if there weren't any O?
N_ _h! What are we t_ d_?.......2003-11-17
...THE WONDERFUL O is a charming book. It's full of wit, wisdom, and social commentary. It's a great story and plays around with the English language in a most interesting way. This is a book that appeals to both adults and children and would also work well as a text in an upper elementary English class. It's a great book. Oh, yeah. Has anyone seen BRAVEHEART? There's a connection between the two.
Oh, no -- no O.......2002-07-04
Pirates come to plunder a small island. When the spokesman tells them they have no treasure "except the blue of the water and the pink of our maidens' cheeks and lips, and the green of our fields," the pirates don't believe them and search high and low.
Meanwhile, the captain of the ship, who hates the letter O, issues an edict. "I'll get rid of the letter O, in upper case and lower...All words in books or signs with an O in them shall have the O erased or painted out. We'll print new books and paint new signs without an O in them." Thus objects and words with Os are banished from the land forever.
Disaster! Imagine the impact on community life! No houses, cottages or bungalows -- only huts, shacks, sheds, shanties and cabins without logs. No dough for the baker, no gold for the goldsmith, no forge for the blacksmith, no cloth for the tailor, no chocolate for the candymaker. (NOW you've gone too far!) No poetry without Os.
Thurber writes, "A man named Otto Ott, when asked his name, could only stutter. Ophelia Oliver repeated hers, and vanished from the haunts of men."
"We can't tell shot from shoot or hot from hoot," the blacksmith pointed out in a meeting with other townsfolk. "Oft becomes the same as foot, and odd the same as dodo. Something must be done at once or we shall never know what we are saying."
The islanders decide that there are four words with an O that must not be lost. Hope, love and valor are three of them and the fourth is the point of the story.
This is a beautifully written, rhythmic tale. THE WONDERFUL O will appeal to everyone who loves language. The story is a challenge to the imagination of the reader.
Can't live fully without the letter O or this wonderful book.......1999-06-24
I read The Wonderful O years ago as a young adult and find myself recommending the book to others. But, alas, the book is out of stock; I mean, the bk is ut f stck. Please, Mr/Ms Publisher, put this wnderful bk back n the bkshelves. As yu can see, we can't live fully withut the letter, r withut this wnderful bk.
One of the great childrens' stories--about freedom........1998-04-28
If there is any way to get this back in to print, I would buy copies for most children I care about.

Book Description
With ten children, Debbie Bowen quickly learned the advantages of actively involving all the kids in the family's daily routines. Delegation has been a key part of the Bowen family's efforts to maintain an organized, happy home and a key to their success. In this delightful book, she explains the formulas and techniques she's discovered, and she shows that W.O.R.K. truly provides Wonderful Opportunities for Raising Responsible Kids.
Bringing her personal experiences and reminiscences to the book, Debbie has created an enjoyable as well as educational read. She emphasizes the close relationships fostered as the entire family works together cleaning the kitchen, caring for the garden, and completing other duties to beautify the home, though she forthrightly acknowledges that there is no such thing as untroubled waters.
In today's world of television, video games, computers, and automatic dishwashers, families too often drift apart. Debbie Bowen has found that delegating work in and around the house gives a sense of accomplishment and draws her family closer because of times spent together. Her children are responsible, and they all have memories that will last a lifetime. The formulas for success in this excellent book can be applied to families everywhere, including yours!
