No matter the economic environment, there are ample reasons why you might be aching to change jobs or move up in the one you already have. In What to Do With the Rest of Your Life, career consultant Robin Ryan--who's offered her advice over the past 20 years to individual clients and through top broadcast and print outlets--shares the specifics that can help you do it right. Dividing her book into sections that focus on sequential steps in the process (figuring it out, moving on, staying put), she describes proven ways to determine your ideal job and workplace, land a job or launch a business and get paid appropriately, get promoted, get a raise, or take your own enterprise to a higher level. Virtually all of Ryan's suggestions will prove useful to one reader or another, as she explains in detail how to tap into the hidden job market--since some 85 percent of all positions are never directly advertised--via research "on the Internet, in the library, over telephones, and through conversations with colleagues, friends, and acquaintances." She also explains, based on interviews with 78 top executives, how "to help you get promoted no matter what level you're at or how big your organization is." --Howard Rothman

Customer Reviews:
Helped me improve my life with a nice new job.......2004-09-20
My kids are in the upper grades now so I faced a daunting task of return to a career I'd left 13 years ago. A friend loved her book, and recommended it highly. I found it inspired me to see that I indeed could make this change and prosper. I found this to be a practical guide -- useful, motivational, with terrific ideas on how to return to work, flourish, and make a good salary too. A valuable guidebook.
Very "What color is your parachute-ish".......2003-06-09
Lots of the Robin's advice comes straight out of the job hunting bible of the past 2 decades "What color is your parachute" by Richard Bolles but still --- It's an excellent primer for the real thing, and summarizes a lot of what Richard Bolles preaches and teaches.
Because it is a quick an easy read, I suggest buying it cheap (or take it out of the library (sorry Amazon)), use it to whet your appetite for Bolles books, then begin collecting every edition you can get your hands on of "What color is your parachute" (every edition has something new in it). And try to get a hold of the audio book (I think he only put one out in 1995 - I wish he'd put one out every year!). It'll change your life and maybe mine too, cause maybe, just maybe, If everyone were to read Bolles books and truly understand the concepts I wouldn't have to deal with so many unhappy, bitter people at the work place.
Learn From Someone Who Knows!.......2003-03-12
I highly recommend this insightful book to anyone who wants to improve their current job situation or consider a change altogether. It offers numerous options, ways to determine the best approach, and will continue to be a valuable resource for many years! Robin Ryans' realistic advice reflects her extensive and sought-after knowledge.
Definitely worth a look.......2003-02-25
I gave the book three stars rather than four or five because it doesn't deliver what the title promises and the cover is all hype -- but the book does deliver some very worthwhile guidance.
What to Do (WTD) will be best suited to the midlife career changer with valuable skills -- self-motivated folks who just need direction. I like the book's down-to-earth no-nonsense tone.
Good parts:
List of career-killers -- not new to anyone who's been out in the world, but well-stated and worth reviewing
Discussion of interviewing for information and network: very realistic
Discussion of internet job search is right on!
Discussion of starting a business is better than average (but I like my own "are you ready" checklist better!)
Salary negotiations section is excellent
Weak parts:
Self-assessment (lists of values and skills were very ordinary and won't be helpful to most)
Recommendation to take tests: rarely useful for mid-career managers or professionals
Relocation section: My book on this topic, Making the Big Move, is two hundred pages long -- two pages can't do justice to the topic and may be misleading.
I wish the author had focused more on interview and resume strategies; interestingly, she does not include a discussion of resumes at all. I suspect that her strength lies in the nuts-and-bolts of job search and I wish she had included more on those topics.
I had to smile when I read her section on how to find a career counselor. Everyone who writes a book includes a list of "must have" qualifications for an advisor and, amazingly, those qualifications are all held by the author!
With a degree in counseling, this author urges us to find a vocational counselor. However, vocational counseling experience helps younger job seekers. Midlife, mid-career professionals need different sources of help. Recent books that target this market tend to be written by experienced professionals who have advanced degrees and life experience.
There are valuable nuggets here and I wish the author would write a meaty book, based on what she knows well, rather than an overview that is too sketchy in some places to be a useful guide.
What any eye opener --buy this book.......2002-10-26
I heard the author on the radio and was quite impressed. Then I read her book and am convinced everyone who cares about their career needs to read this masterpiece. It's insightful & inspiring but has the specifics on direction that most books on uncovering your passion seem to lack. I wanted to do something I enjoyed more without having to take a big salary cut. In fact, Ms. Ryan showed me how to get a new job that's a promotion with a BIG raise attached to it. Ms. Ryan is a wealth of ideas on how to prosper and find the meaning that was lacking at work. You'll be amazed at how easy it is to make a career change if you follow her sage advice. I'm happier and making thousands more because this lady really knows her stuff. My advise to you is buy it, use it & prosper.

Well written, powerfully concise and to the point.
For anyone who has been or is in a career transition, in the midsts of finding and/or creating a business of their own, for anyone who has been looking for the "answer" in what to do next and how, for anyone who has been exploring and trying all kinds of stuff but hasn't found "that thing" that you can call fulfilling work - READ THIS BOOK!

Any crap you may be going through may actually be your gold!
2nd best book I"ve ever read!.......2005-03-26
What? The last reviewer of this book says the author wasnt focused? If she was anymore focused on the emotional, mental and spiritual processes that go about in keeping us from reaching our "soul" purpose, our brain would fry! Filled with lots of quick inspiring stories of ordinary people who made their dreams come true. She says "Responsible choice involves consequences not the least of which are relinquishments along the way. (page81) If you could just get that it would be worth 100 times the price of the book. She talks about how the creative process can even trigger chronic fatigue and other stressors. She clearly guides us thru the "What do I do next?" panic attack we have when we get stuck or defeated. Even better than her 1st book and that was great! As a personal consultant and coach I am always greatly interested in hearing how books effect people. Email me at:mince38@yahoo.com and let me know how you are enjoying this wonderful book. Personally, I would buy it for any person who is not living the perfect life they want! Its the 2nd best birthday gift you could give someone. In fact, we could even start a message board on this book.

Not focused, but encouraging and uplifting all the same.......2001-06-29
In "To Build the Life You Want, Create the Work You Love," Marsha Sinetar devotes a chapter each to exploring the attributes that she believes an entrepreneur possesses: inventive inclination, authentic focus, meaningful purpose, "figuring-out" skills, risk-taking effectiveness, strategic outlook, and high spiritual intelligence.
An "inventive inclination" is simply creativity combined with resourcefulness. Unleashing your inventive powers, she claims, involves asking "what," not "how." It's being open to possibilities.
Once we open our mind to creative possibilities, it's necessary then to focus authentically on who we are at heart. "Authentic people are activated by their inner truths," she writes. "When we're authentic," she claims, "others usually perceive us as such and will often go to great lengths to help us succeed ... When we're real, we're believable, credible." Authentic focus also requires focusing on our energy. "What good is it to identify your fascinations and goals if you're too tired or stressed out to pursue them? ... Vitality also translates into widened opportunities. People like to be around us when we're centered and enthused." By focusing on their own needs, Sinetar writes, entrepreneurs find ways to address others' needs and thereby profit.
"Meaningful purpose" delves deeper into the spiritual dimension of entrepreneuring. It involves both posing and answering the question, "What exactly do you want out of life?" "No one can tell you what your purposes are," Sinetar writes. It involves moving slowly, gaining balance, poise, and self-understanding. "This is a spiritual stance," she writes. She encourages her readers to grow in their "down" times and to develop discernment, which involves strict self-discipline. She also warns that "conscious choices are often costly ones." It is in delving into meaningful purpose that a rich personal transformation can take place. It involves making honest self-assessments.
By "figuring-out" skills, Sinetar implies that "entrepreneurs trust the mystery of the unknown. Rather than accepting imprisonment by what they don't understand, entrepreneurs strive to transcend their questions and limits." This is where a genuine love of learning is required. "Figuring out involves eliminating illusions." It involves expanding on what we want by answering the questions of where, when, for whom, and why, and listing the steps you're willing to take to explore the territory you want to inhabit.
"Part of creating work involves establishing a solid foundation of chance-taking skills," Sinetar writes. Wisely, she advises practicing in low risks before undertaking high risks. She writes about creating spaces in which to fail safely, to monitor our performance, to correct and improve ourselves. She then illustrates a stepladder of risk-taking skills, and differentiates risk-taking from impulsivity. "Begin small. Go slow. Build skill," she says. "Prudent risk-taking involves making contingency plans, asking `what if?' and assessing the probability of failure." By taking small, calculated risks, she says, discernment grows.
In exploring what a strategic outlook is, Sinetar writes that it involves first elevating oneself to the point of feeling entitled to have the life and work one enjoys. Strategy transcends a mere business plan, she writes. Eventually, our strategies ask us to think about where we'll find supportive, affordable resources for our objectives. Your decision to study whatever you don't understand becomes part of your strategy. She encourages her readers to research specific ways to add value to customers and clients and to consider how to position your product or service in the niche you hope to enter.
Finally, "discovering and creating vocation requires discernment," Sinetar writes. Once the above six skills have been considered, "our job is to unfold." A high spiritual intelligence recognizes that "we ourselves are the work." It involves accepting that we must change. A high spiritual intelligence realizes that "vocation comes as you discover and express your own identify." It views work as art, recognizing that we learn best when we're learning about ourselves. "Almost all gifted artists strive to mesh inner feelings or vision with marketplace realities," she writes. "Only actualizing adults find enough personal reward in such risks to accept the turmoil involved," including family and inner conflict, struggle, and doubts. Vocation is neither about career nor money, Sinetar writes; "it's doing God's will."
True vocation is a spiritual journey.......2001-06-06
This book has been one of the most valuable books I have read on the topic of creating meaningful work. Sinetar artfully illustrates how entrepeneurs find their true vocation in their own wholeness--work as a natural expression of their authentic selves. The catch is...this takes time. Time in reflection. Time in retreat. Time in honest evaluation of one's values and skills. Meaningful, fulfilling work is a spiritual journey and I fear that, in our fast and faster world, a book about slow and stop will be overlooked. I actually purchased this book in 1998, but put it down because it didn't seem to "apply" to me. Picking it up again in 2001, I was ready to hear the truth about creating the work that I had always wanted.
I'm happy to say that I'm well on my way. I highly recommend this book as a light for your spiritual path.
Positive, realistic and practical side of entrepreneuring........1998-10-18
Seems the "skills" and reality side of Do What You Love.... these are stories that show everyday people --not superstar Trump types -- in various stages of starting their own small ventures or shaping the life and values they love. Especially relevant to me is the story of Esther, the eighty-something woman who returned to ministerial college at seventy-something and now runs a little spiritual direction business out of her home. More power to Esther and anyone like her. Good stories for adult ed. course, too.

Spend your money better.......2000-08-05
This book is a total waste of money; it is only useful for lighting up the BBQ. The only one to make (plenty?)of money out of this book is the writer. Do not be discouraged by the title!. This is not a serious book.
Awful, at best.......2000-04-19
Wow, this is one of the most useless "books" I have ever read. Based on the title, one would expect some sort of insight into a career search. I found this book to be no help at all. It looks like the author lifted a few job ideas from the government job handbook and wrote a bad Clif's Notes for them. If you want guidance, please do not waste your time and money on this drivel. I agree with the previous reviewer.... I feel sorry for anyone that actually paid for this book.
Possibly the worst book ever written on choosing a career........1999-06-22
This is the most astoundingly useless career planning book I have ever seen. The portion of the book dedicated to help you choose your career type is ridiculous. You get the option of identifying with 11 jobs from which all the rest are derived. Then she goes on to "describe" jobs. Each job gets a one paragraph explanation along with training and earning information. The training information tells you stuff like "you'll need acting ability" in order to become an actor or the trade secret of physicians - they have to go to medical school! Her information on compensation typically says "you'll be paid a salary" , "you'll be paid a fee" , or "your income is generated from what you charge for your work." My heart goes out to those who need to spend $14 for this sort of advice. The only surprise in the book was under the job description of "Cruise Ship Featured Guest" which could be "an attractive single man who will dance with a variety of female guests." Now there's a job to make your parents proud

Book Description
The formula for Hollywood success has long baffled even its greatest visionaries. For every blockbuster there are countless flops. Directors, producers, and actors who achieve great success with one film often suffer abject humiliation on the next. After all, George Lucas may have created the Star Wars franchise, but he also created Howard the Duck. Now Peter Bart, the editor-in-chief of Variety, co-host of Sunday Morning Shootout, and the former studio executive whose hits include The Godfather and Rosemary's Baby, presents a fascinating look at the hits that sizzle and the flops that fizzle.
In Boffo, Peter Bart reveals the backlot secrets behind the biggest hits and misses in both film and television: how movies with the biggest stars and budgets turned out to be bombs and how unknowns with no studio support overcame great adversity to make cinematic history. In so doing, Bart tells the history of pop culture itself. He looks at the mega successes of today, from The Lord of the Rings trilogy to the CSI phenomenon, the smashes of the past including Easy Rider, American Graffiti, and All in the Family, as well as the progenitor of all blockbusters, Birth of a Nation. Bart offers his signature straight-shooting analysis of the silk purses and the sows' ears of the entertainment world.

A 'must' for any film director, producer, or Hollywood wannabe........2006-10-15
BOFFO! From budget concerns to anticipating changes in audience tastes, BOFFO covers pitfalls as well as successes and is a 'must' for any film director, producer, or Hollywood wannabe.

Mini "making of" documentaries.......2006-08-22
Think of each of these essays as half hour VH1 specials on "The Making of . . ." a series of unexpected and unlikely hits. It seems hard to believe that all of the films, TV shows, plays, and personalities here (CSI, All in the Family, The Godfather, Lord of the Rings, Oprah, Cats, and more) - things that are American media icons - were once turned down, cut back, and, once they were finally allowed to begin, had so many chips stacked against them (organized crime wasn't so sure they wanted anyone making THE GODFATHER), that it's a miracle any of them saw the light of day. Andrew Lloyd Webber was about to pull the plug on CATS a week before it opened. How each of these productions and people eventually made it to the top makes for fascinating reading.
A real grab-bag.......2006-06-12
Peter Bart admits that the book is a grab-bag of essays on blockbuster movies, TV series and stage shows. I found it entertaining enough, but I'm not sure I got much out of it. He basically presents the history of a couple of dozen shows, several of which have already been chronicled in longer, more informative books (Casablanca, I Love Lucy, King Kong, etc.). This book is not unlike a Reader's Digest version of famous show business stories. I did find one item that I think is a mistake. In his "I Love Lucy" chapter, he writes that William Frawley and Lucille Ball hated each other. I've never read that before. I think he meant to write that Vivian Vance and Frawley hated each other.

I love Mr. Boffo.......2002-04-02
This is a great collection of comics. Joe has a wonderfully satirical and cynical wit. He has the perfect combination of smart humor and dry humor. I'm really glad that amazon is including the sample pages above. Look through the sample pages, and I'll guarantee you'll be howling.
Another nice thing about this book is that it has reprints of his really popular strips, such as "Friends" and "Carlos."
If you're looking for more of Mr. Boffo, the Mr. Boffo website has more books that you can order.

I once saw an interview with Joe Martin in which he described a cartoon he submits every year and can never get published. In the cartoon, a man is on a psychiatrist's couch, saying "Doctor, all my friends think I'm crazy". To which, the doctor replies, "Why don't you kill them?". Even without such a darkly hilarious cartoon as that, this book is packed with laughs. I'd recommend it to anyone who appreciates a little insanity in their humor.
Joe, who are you...?.......1999-05-13
Bought this one, bought the other one, and keep on looking in case he decides to put out another book. He has the material, I've read enough cartoons in the papers for at least one other book, so come on Joe. I'm waiting, along with a few other people who can't get enough of Weederman the wonder dog. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a bit of slapstick mixed with the sanity of a slightly insane world.
