      Book Description

Switzerland is universally respected for its highly successful economy. It has long enjoyed low unemployment and inflation, and an exceptionally satisfactory transition process for youngsters from school to work. This book provides a nuts-and-bolts comparison of how this successful transition is brought about. It explains the different emphases of Swiss secondary schooling by focusing on the way in which both academic and practical subjects are taught. The different ways in which career guidance and intervals of work experience are handled in the two countries are also considered.

      Book Description

In 1996, Darius Mehri traveled to Japan to work as a computer simulation engineer within the Toyota production system. Once there, he found a corporate experience far different from what he had expected. Notes from Toyota-land, based on a diary that Mehri kept during his three years at an upper-level Toyota group company, provides a unique insider's perspective on daily work life in Japan and charts his transformation from a wide-eyed engineer eager to be part of the "Japanese Miracle" to a social critic, troubled by Japanese corporate practices.

Mehri documents the sophisticated "culture of rules" and organizational structure that combine to create a profound control over workers. The work group is cynically used to encourage employees to work harder and harder, he found, and his other discoveries confirmed his doubts about the working conditions under the Japanese Miracle. For example, he learned that male employees treated their female counterparts as short-term employees, cheap labor, and potential wives. Mehri also describes a surprisingly unhealthy work environment, a high rate of injuries due to inadequate training, fast line speeds, crowded factories, racism, and lack of team support. And in conversations with his colleagues, he uncovered a culture of intimidation, subservience, and vexed relationships with many aspects of their work and surroundings. As both an engaging memoir of cross-cultural misunderstanding and a primer on Japanese business and industrial practices, Notes from Toyota-land will be a revelation to everyone who believes that Japanese business practices are an ideal against which to measure success.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe You Can Argue with Sucess.......2007-09-01

An insightful book, the story of an American engineer in Japan. The author took advantage of this unique opportunity to tell of his experiences working for a Toyota subsidiary in Japan. In Japan, the conditions seem harsh on the lower level engineering and office staff. Many American business studies stress the conformity of the Japanese decision making process and the "good-neighbor" policy relationships of corporations to the city councils in the area in which they reside. The author demonstrates from office experiences that the conformity is often enforced by the individual's fear of being ostracized. It is a very top-down hierarchal structure with some values that American corporations would consider politically incorrect, such as the role of career women and how foreign guest workers are treated.
The author explains the concept of tatemae versus honne. In the workplace confrontation is suppressed under the mask of tatemae (the way things are supposed to be). After some social drinking the individual's "honne", how one actually feels may appear.
I appreciate what this author has done. What I read was so different from what other business books have to say about Japanese management that the reader has to wonder is this author at a typical Japanese corporation. Could one judge all of American corporate culture by working at a subsidiary of General Motors? Probably yes, Corporate Cultures must carry most of the cultural trait of the country.
Any reader from the curious to a business studies major will find this book fascinating. A light book, no analyzing, just the author telling of his office experiences in a radically different culture.
We have all heard of American corporations adopting many of the Japanese business practices. Their strong points seem to be to aid the factory floor. Hopefully their office culture will not be adopted here.

      3 out of 5 stars Somewhat interesting.......2007-02-13

As others have reviewed, this is obviously the author's first job in an industrial setting and some observations are quite naive. It is also not a Toyota plant as one might assume from the title, but a little further down the supply chain. This, in itself is a unique viewpoint, as little has been written about Toyota's 1st or 2nd Tier suppliers or their captive companies. If you have many years of engineering or manufacturing experience under your belt, you might consider that many of his negative observations are not unique to Japan - just lack of exposure on his part.
An interesting read to see the social side of Japanese industry, but little insight into the inner working of TPS.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting memior of a first job.......2006-07-14

As other reviewers have mentioned, parts of this reflect experiences the author would have at any first job.

Japan is definitely different (from the US anyhow) especially in the way women are treated, and consensus is created (and desired).

Sure parts are a bit naive and parts are unreflective, but that's what makes it interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Any First Job.......2006-04-05

After considerable time in academe, Darius Mehri encountered many difficulties that are common in any first job. Some are more pronounced in Japan, while other difficulties would be more pronounced in other countries. With a few more job experiences under his belt, Darius may learn that - in any setting - things such as protocol, advice from senior members, not immediately tilting at windmills, would help him have a more rewarding work experience.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent insights into life in "Toyota-land".......2006-02-15

The book is filled with terrific insights into what the workplace is really like at a Toyota subsidary in Japan. The insights are provided by Darius Mehri, an American who worked there as an engineer for several years and kept a diary of his experiences and observations. Mehri details the often unfortunate limitations that a rigid hierarchical system can create, as this rigidity is usually blindly obeyed despite the limits on technological advancement. Employees are often forced to abandon their common sense in order to support the understood order of the workplace, which often leads to absurd results. As Mehri's journey progresses, conditions at the factory worsen in a sort of Kafkaesquian absurdity, where legitimate questions are raised (by him) but no legitimate answers are given (by the company). Unfortunately, most of the workers are helpless to change their plight as the events unfold. Mehri artfully describes this state of events, which are somewhat depressing, but he also sprinkles his story with numerous comedic takes on the insanity that he observes around himself! This is defintiely a worthwhile, quick read - and he has put more information at his website, www.notesfromtoyotaland.com.

        Book Description

Andrew Gordon goes to the core of the Japanese enterprise system, the workplace, and reveals a complex history of contest and confrontation. The Japanese model produced a dynamic economy which owed as much to coercion as to happy consensus. Managerial hegemony was achieved only after a bitter struggle that undermined the democratic potential of postwar society. The book draws on examples across Japanese industry, but focuses in depth on iron and steel. This industry was at the center of the country's economic recovery and high-speed growth, a primary site of corporate managerial strategy and important labor union initiatives.

Beginning with the Occupation reforms and their influence on the workplace, Gordon traces worker activism and protest in the 1950s and '60s, and how they gave way to management victory in the 1960s and '70s. He shows how working people had to compromise institutions of self-determination in pursuit of economic affluence. He illuminates the Japanese system with frequent references to other capitalist nations whose workplaces assumed very different shape, and looks to Japan's future, rebutting hasty predictions that Japanese industrial relations are about to be dramatically transformed in the American free-market image. Gordon argues that it is more likely that Japan will only modestly adjust the status quo that emerged through the turbulent postwar decades he chronicles here.

          Book Description

This book examines one of the greatest challenges facing Japanese multinationals as they continue to expand foreign direct investment: how to integrate local managers into the management process of overseas subsidiaries, as well as in that of the parent companies themselves. In the majority of Japanese subsidiaries, management control has remained in the hands of Japanese managers at extremely high cost, but now Japanese firms are considering integrating local nationals into the management process of their companies, a process that may yield significant competitive advantage.

              Book Description

Engineers are a key occupational group in the transformation of the modern world. Contrasts between Japan's "economic miracle" and Britain's relative economic decline have often been linked to differences in education, training, and employment of engineers. Engineers in Japan and Britain uses careful and systematic comparisons to examine the approaches to the training and education of engineers in the two nations.

                  Book Description

Chinese and Japanese trade unions may seem emasculated and weak when compared with their Western counterparts in that they do not stand up to management to protect the interests of workers. The author's careful analysis in Law and Industrial Relations: China and Japan after World War II probes the reasons for this difference, tearing down stereotypical notions about societies with a Confucian heritage, to examine the significant role of law in shaping industrial relations in modern China and Japan. Through a comparative analysis of their trade union laws, this work analyses the role of law in shaping postwar industrial relations in China and Japan and the interplay amongst such elements as the State or the Party, management, and workers. The work focuses on industrial relations in commercial and industrial enterprises, addressing such issues as the performance or nonperformance of trade unions in China and Japan and possible explanations, and the prospects and limitations of using codified laws to effect change or control in the postwar industrial settings of these two countries. The work's helpful features include + a comparative approach, + the use of case studies to maximize objectivity and insight, + a unified and clearly expressed thesis and conclusions including a summary of findings, + footnotes and cross references, + an index, and + concise explanations of the relevant legal provisions and the manner in which they have been applied. This ground-breaking work enables academics and international labour law practitioners to understand industrial relations in these two countries in light of their own particular circumstances, to ascertain whether their trade unions have fulfilled their role as representatives of workers, and to evaluate the efficacy of law as an agent of social change and/or social control. Law and Industrial Relations: China and Japan after World War II also achieves a broader purpose: breaking through stereotypes of East Asian peoples to promote international understanding, generate thought-provoking issues and insights, and stimulate more research.

                    Book Description

The original is back. TRULY TASTELESS JOKES took America by storm and made it laugh at itself. It's all in here, disgusting, repulsive, cruel, and just plain tasteless jokes and stories that will make you smile, laugh, or groan--and love every minute of it.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun at parties.......2004-10-04

This is a great book to keep in your back-pack at school, in your pants pocket, or your car's glove compartment for whenever you are feeling alone, or the weight of the stone. Working late? Depressed about your low paying job? Getting a bad rap from your parents? Had a fight with your old lady? Mad at the Jews? Getting a bad rap from Blacks? Been double crossed by a Pollack? The handicapped getting you down? Tired of all the homosexuals in your work place? Just pull this little sucker out for a quick glance, and it will bring your spirits back up. This book doesn't discriminate. It's got something for everybody.

Oh, and it's also a great little party favor. Uh, that is... just so long as you know the people at the party. I mean, really KNOW them. I guess what I'm saying is be careful. As funny as it is, this book could very well get you killed. The other volumes even more so than the first.

5 out of 5 stars Okay, it's SUPPOSED to be offensive...back off already!.......2003-11-30

I personally find this to be an indisposable book of dirty jokes. I mean, come on! It runs the whole gamut of everything from racist and sexist jokes to religion and animals. Yes, yes, it is QUITE offensive--BUT ONLY IF YOU CAN'T TAKE A JOKE.

If you *can* take a joke, and a good one at that, then this book is a bible. I, for one, love it.

So to all those who hate this book and think it's offensive smut: don't read it or anything else by this author.

If you can handle very taboo but good jokes, read an enjoy!'

Oh, and how many people from New Jersey does it take to screw a lightbulb? READ AND FIND OUT!

1 out of 5 stars This book is horrible.......2001-10-09

Well, the title says it all. This book should be called "truly racist jokes". Most of the "jokes" in this book are either a: more offensive than actually funny, or b: older than my granny. Disguising offensive content by hiding it under the umbrella of a "joke" is what this "author" has done here. I recommend this book to any one who either want a really good way to waste 5 dollars, is out of tiolet paper, or is interested in actually becoming dumber.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, party hit, and outrageous........1999-06-28

A great book to read at a party, memorize the jokes and carry them with you. People will remember you for the rest of your life. The Dead Baby Jokes never grow old. So funny, but the title is true, they are Truly Tasteless Jokes.
