There are many useful books out there covering the craft of writing and getting published, but several of those guides tend to repeat the same tired message - stay in step! Keep in line! Made Me Want to Freelance.......2007-09-05

Honestly, I don't review often, but this book was just so good that I felt I needed to.

And yes, this book really did make me switch careers. Okay, so it isn't that much of a leap from newspaper reporting, but this book made freelancing so appealing that it made me realize that it's what I want to do.

If you're new to freelancing or considering it, read this. It gives you total confidence that you can do it, but does warn you of the downsides. It gives tips for what to do if you don't have clips (like me, unless you count a few articles in my college newspaper), or how to deal with interviews that aren't quite going your way. Also includes what to ask for in a contract, when you should and shouldn't settle for less, and how to handle editors. It's just a really great and useful book.

This book is for aspiring writers whose creative juices get deflated by rigid guidelines. These ladies rock. There is a way other than following the masses, and the authors give you examples to prove it. This book can be the one that shifts your course as a writer and gives you the courage to break new ground.

This book really helped.......2007-07-11

The book was easy and interesting to read. It gave me permission to let go of some of the standard rules of freelancing and try going with my gut. I wrote longer more detailed queries against the suggested guidelines. I wrote in my own voice rather than trying to write what I thought they would want to read. I sent a few queries by e-mail right away and actually got positive responses and ended up with one trade magazine assignment. The book also reinforced some of the advice I had already been following. The best parts are the short interviews with writers about how they got their first assignments and mistakes they made and such. A good book for beginners.

This is a really funny book - best read aloud in the company of like minded feline fanciers. Better still - sing a-long around the piano. Add a glass of wine (or 2) and you are guaranteed a great laugh. Excellent present for those fond of cats.

Anyone who lives with a cat will know exactly where the writers of this book are coming from. A very humourous collection of songs which reflect the moods of many a cat.

Not only are the songs enjoyable to read, but the illustrations are an added pleasure.

The only thing which lets the book down is the size of it. A few more songs, for the price paid, wouldn't have gone a miss.

This little book is full of big laughs. Very creative. If you have cats or know someone who does, it's the perfect gift. I brought it to work and everyone wants one now. I recommend this to everyone. Even the illustrations are great.

Glorious Cats and Carols.......2006-09-22

Cats and Carols by Lesley Anne Ivory is filled with vibrant, Christmas-themed backgrounds in which her beautifully realistic cats play, cuddle, nap, and pose. In fact, there is one picture of a fuzzy yellow kitten, named Dandelion, napping on a patchwork Christmas quilt. I have been collecting fabrics in order to replicate the quilt. For each cat portrait there is a Christmas carol; some have more verses than I knew existed! This is a wonderful book! If you love Christmas, and/or cats and/or Christmas carols, I highly recommend this book!

Perfect Christmas gift for cat lovers.......2001-07-05

This is a lavishly illustrated picture book with a gorgeous layout: each 2-page spread features the text of a Christmas carol (with all the verses, not just the familiar ones) with decorative initial letters and a lovely border on the left page; the facing page contains a painting (with matching border) of a cat or cats in a setting that illustrates the carol. Although the settings are fantastical, the paintings are realistic rather than cartoonish or childish in any way, so that the cats look absolutely real. Both adults and childrens can enjoy this beautiful book.

This collection of familiar Christmas carols reworked to a feline perspective is priceless. Laurie Loughlin writes with a deft touch and a wry understanding of the feline nature, as only a cat-lover can. The illustrations are hilarious and sweet.

I think my favorite is: "Oh Come All Ye Furful" -- it's not only very funny but perfectly captures cat-ness in lyrics such as:

I love this latest Nicky book! The design is perfect; the photos of Nicky endearing. The fun poetry in playful multi-sized fonts of different colors, some shimmering gold, is filled with intertwined Christmas and jazz imagery. Like snowflakes, jazzy mittens, Santa, the reindeer boogie woogie, angels and of course, cool cats in a bebop wonderland. I'll read it on Christmas Eve to my three young nephews, all Nicky book and cd fans. Then we'll dance, prance, sing and strut to Nicky's Jazz Christmas companion cd as we put finishing touches on the Christmas tree.

Confessed Nicky fans that we are, my friends and I have already bought several copies of "Nicky's Jazz Christmas" for upcoming holiday gifts, but we couldn't wait until Christmas to give it to our 2 and a half year old Nicky groupie. The latest in Carol Friedman's amazing series, this book is packed with adorable Nicky photos (not to mention poetic Christmas imagery) which our daughter personally narrates to us from the next room--what he's doing, wearing or saying-- and then she'll spontaneously sing a few phrases from Louis Prima's "Music goes Round and Around" from the Nicky's Jazz for Kids CD. (She's still learning the Christmas songs on the new CD). We couldn't be happier about the influence these books and CD's have had on her, and can't recommend Nicky's new Jazzy Christmas (and all the other Nicky products) enough. And even though I'm one of those complainers about too much Christmas music, I've already got the accompanying CD going in the car. It's adorable... our favorite Christmas CD so far.
