    Book Description

This book breaks new intellectual ground in the analysis of the German welfare state. Peter Bleses and Martin Seeleib-Kaiser argue that we are witnessing a dual transformation of the welfare state, which is caused by the emergence of new dominating interpretative patterns. Increasingly, the state reduces its social policy commitments towards securing the achieved living standard of former wage earners, which in the past had been the key normative principle of social policy in Germany, while at the same time public support and services for families are expanded.

      Book Description

Insurance and financial markets have been radically and deeply changed in the last 20 years. Deregulation, internationalization of insurance and financial institutions, increasing competition, electronic commerce, bancassurance, and the emergence of new risks are among the challenges faced by insurers and other financial firms. These developing trends pose both global and local challenges for financial firms participating in insurance markets.

"The Handbook of International Insurance: Between Global Dynamics and Local Contingencies" increases understanding of insurance markets by adopting an international comparative approach. Leading scholars and practitioners worldwide provide detailed information on market trends, regulation, taxation, and economic developments for thirteen specific countries in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Each country chapter covers key aspects of insurance: life insurance, non-life insurance, and public and private social insurance programs.

The book also includes comprehensive chapters on reinsurance, Lloyd’s of London, alternative risk transfer, South and East Asian insurance markets, and European insurance markets. Setting the stage is an overview chapter by the editors focusing on overall conclusions on globalization. A unique source of information on the evolution of insurance markets worldwide, this book provides valuable perspectives for scholars, practitioners, and policy makers.

From the supplier: Reinsurers attending a 1997 seminar sponsored by the Insurance Information Institute of New York and the Reinsurance Assn of America learned ways in which their offerings can thrive in an era of "bancassurance" - the combination of banking, insurance and other financial services. Banks can serve as a more efficient distributor for some products, which allows reinsurers who service the insurance companies that offer those products to increase their market share.

                      Book Description

The goal of this report is to assist managers in gauging a company's financial performance vis--vis firms competing in the same sector, at the global level. In particular, this report covers KBC BANCASSURANCE HOLDING SA, 1000 BRUSSELS, BELGIUM.

With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of entry barriers, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company's performance against other firms on a worldwide basis. Doing so, however, is not an obvious task. First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector. Second, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full financial benchmarks vis--vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover assets, liabilities, income and ratios. Since our reports are printed on demand, the figures available are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 reports are produced each year).

                        Book Description

Are the combined human resources at KBC BANCASSURANCE HOLDING SA productive? There is no absolute answer to this question. This report considers the extent to which the company's labor deployment indicators differ from global benchmarks. In this report we consider forecasts of differences between labor ratios and the resulting return on this human investment compared to global benchmarks; the estimation of such differences is commonly called a "gap analysis." What is the ratio of short-term and long-term assets to employee? What are typical capital-labor ratios? How different are these ratios to companies serving the same link in the value chain? What are the average sales and net profits per employee compared to global benchmarks? These and over 50 other indicators of labor productivity are considered in this report. The report does so by going beyond traditional analyses by considering companies competing in the same or similar industrial classification at a global level. The goal of this report, therefore, is to assist consultants, human resource managers, strategic planners, and corporate officers in gauging estimates of a company's human resource indicators compared to firms competing or participating in the same economic sector, at the global level. This report is not about whether a particular company or industry has performed well or poorly in the past or will do so in the future. With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of entry barriers, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company's human resource indicators against other firms on a worldwide basis. Doing so, however, is not an obvious task. First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector, but not necessarily competing directly with the company in local markets. These firms should not be perceived, therefore, to be direct competitors to the company in question, but simply those that have been classified by various sources (e.g. EDGAR or similar foreign filings), as competing to serve customers in the same link of the value chain, or broad industrial classification, as identified by SIC, NAICS or similar codes. Second, given the international nature of the task, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full human resources benchmarks vis-a-vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover labor-asset ratios, labor-liability ratios, and labor-income ratios. Since our reports are printed on demand, the statistics reported are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 updates are produced each year). Each report provides over 100 statistics and 40 graphs to the reader. This reports is on KBC BANCASSURANCE HOLDING SA, 1080 BRUSSELS, Belgium.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource.......2007-10-11

This book was a perfect guide for me when I needed it most. Being diagnosed with a brain tumor has got to be one of the most daunting things a human can be faced with. On top of the shock, you'll quickly realize that the medical community can be a frustrating and inefficient entity to deal with while you're trying to make the most important decisions of your life. This book tells you how to take the bull by the horns and navigate through the murky waters of bureaucratic red tape. I followed the book's advice on keeping a folder with all my medical records and I took it to every appointment. While I was laying on a gurney waiting for an angiogram, a potentially dangerous procedure, I asked why it was taking so long to get started. The doctor said the hospital had misplaced my MRIs. I said that I had a copy on CD in my bag (something Dr. Zeltzer says everyone should do). His eyes popped open wide and he actually used my CD for the procedure. The nurse later told me that no one had ever done that. The book put me in control at a time when decisions like choosing the right doctors were literally a mater of life or death. My benign tumor has been removed for two and a half years and my life is very normal. I will never forget what this book meant to me.

                        5 out of 5 stars A book of hope.......2006-09-04

This is volume 1 of a two-volume set. Buy them both. Just like the second volume, it is an essential "navigation" guide for patients with one of the deadliest cancers. The book is logically organized, gives all the necessary information and almost nothing is missing. I am brain cancer patient and I recommend this book. This book and a book by Ben Williams, Surviving "Terminal" Cancer should be on the bookshelf of every GBM patient. This book gave me hope and the strength to endure. This is a good book for anyone who needs to understand the complexity and diagnosis of a brain tumor. It will give you the facts to help you or a family member make intelligent decisions when faced with this medical diagnosis. My identical twin brother was diagnosed with a rapid growing tumor that was affecting his vision. We are both software engineers not doctors. We need facts with absolutes. Not probabilities. He was admitted to the University of New Mexico Hospital, Department of Neurosurgery. His wife and 1 year old daughter were at his side waiting for the operation. I found this book at the medical school bookstore. I thumbed through it and could not put it down. The book carefully explained in detail exactly what the medical staff was saying. It was not a solution for the emotions we were going through but at least I understood the complexity of the brain and impact of tumors. He had two major operations, including a craniotomy. Thankfully, he pulled through. That was a year ago. He will be on medicine from the tumor operation for the rest of his life. But he is alive. There are other books I might suggest for the emotional impact on a family, but this review is just for the understanding of the medical diagnosis. If you or a family member has been diagnosed with a brain tumor I suggest this book.

                        5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential.......2005-08-14

If you or a loved one are newly diagnosed with a brain tumor, this is the book you must read immediately and use as a reference throughout the process of dealing with the disease. I wish that it had been available when our daughter was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme early last year. With a disease of this complexity, you and your family will ultimately be responsible for coordinating treatment options, anticipating and managing side effects of medications, etc. To be an effective advocate you need to learn as much as you can as quickly as you can, and this book is the place to start. The medical care that our daughter has received has been uniformly excellent, but a vigilent and informed caregiving team is a vital component in managing her disease.

"Surviving Terminal Cancer" by Ben Williams is also excellent -- both books are required reading.

The quality of the information available and the dedication of the people who provide it is truly amazing. Dr Musella's website, www.virtualtrials.com, is another essential resource, particularly for information about the many new developments in brain tumor research and treatment. I believe that there is much reason for optimism, and that an empowered and informed community will play an important role in conquering this terrible disease.

                        5 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone dealing with a brain tumor.......2004-12-22

This book helps guide you through the turmoil that comes with the diagnosis of a brain tumor. Unlike most diseases where you go to your doctor and let him / her make all of the decisions, dealing with a brain tumor is very different. You will be dealing with up to 20 different types of health professionals. You will be given choices that your doctor doesn't even want to make for you. Decisions that you make can greatly affect your chances of being a long term survivor.
You need all of the help you can get.
This book was written by one of the best neuro-oncologists in the world, drawing not only on his professional experiences dealing with his own patients at some of the most prestigious brain tumor centers in the USA, but also on his many years of participating in online support groups and answering questions from my website, Clinical Trials And Noteworthy Treatments For Brain Tumors.

Everyone’s got stuff, but between school, work, sports, music, and the social scene, today’s teens really have a lot of stuff. Usually, it’s crammed into an overstuffed backpack, a skimpy school locker, or lost in a huge pile on the bedroom floor. This step-by-step guide to getting organized helps teens take control of the clutter. First, readers learn how to deal with whatever obstacles prevent them from being organized. Next, they learn how to systematically organize the Big Three — school, time, and space. The school section includes instructions on how to set up binders, notebooks, and a great study space. In the time chapter, get practical advice on managing hectic schedules, plus a template for creating a personalized daily planner. In the space section, learn tried-and-true techniques that transform bedrooms from war zones into peaceful retreats. With detailed diagrams for organizing everything from computer files to personal time, Where’s My Stuff? helps readers establish time- and clutter-management skills that never go out of style.

"Where's my stuff?" by Samantha Moss and Lesley Schwartz was so helpful to me as a student entering middle school.

The chapter called "School Stuff" had so many great ideas to get organized for fifth grade. It showed you 3 ways to organize your papers and notes. The chapter also taught me how to organize my study space at home. In addition, it showed me how to use my backback and set up my locker. The tips in this chapter are sure to make my year GREAT!
