Book Description
Succeeding at Your Interview: A Practical Guide for Teachers uses an effective interactive format to present core information about interviewing for a teaching job, document a wide variety of interview processes, guide teacher candidates in developing strategies for interviewing, and increase their confidence in communicating their professional knowledge. In a spiral process, readers are asked to consider scenarios, respond to questions, contemplate the perspective offered by the authors, and modify their responses. The goal is to help teacher candidates develop and articulate a clear idea of their own professional knowledge and of the culture of the schools at which they are interviewing.
Special features:
*Eleven detailed chapters and five interview scenarios engage the reader in continuous reflective practice in the multifaceted activities integral to interviewing--beginning with organizing the job search and proceeding through the entire interview process.
*The scenarios implicitly develop knowledge and the chapters explicitly detail the information.
*Specific interview situations engage readers in articulating their professional knowledge, linking theory and practice.
*"Keep in Mind" comments, Margin Notes, and Decision Trees provide opportunities to reflect on the issues and develop personal responses.
*Sample documents, formats, questions, and responses enhance understanding of evaluation processes.
*Graphic organizers at the beginning and end of each chapter provide visual representations of the concepts and concerns addressed in each chapter, assisting the reader in identifying chapters relevant to their current needs in the job search and in synthesizing, organizing, and reviewing the information contained in the chapter.

This book will make you interview-savvy !.......2003-06-23
Beyond a "Must-Read"--this is a "Must-Do" personal coaching workbook. As a counselor in educational placement, I develop interview tip sheets, classroom seminars and conduct mock interviews for student teachers. This book does more. It walks you through sample interviews and shows you how to "work the questions." The authors clarify the interview process for inexperienced candidates, and provide the tools for anyone (even other-than-teacher job seekers) to interview with confidence and professionalism.
Valuable Tool.......2002-06-21
"Succeeding at your interview" is a good resource for anyone entering the field of education. This book gives the reader a step by step guide for achieving a teaching position in the school of his or her choice. Expert guidance is provided on preparing an application, presenting yourself as a professional, and evaluating an interviewer's questions. In addition, the scenario sessions are an excellent tool to avoid being caught unprepared for an interview question. I plan on recommending this book to all of the teachers I know. This would be a great gift for a recent college graduate, or a seasoned professional who is changing career paths.
Guidance From an Experienced Mentor.......2002-06-18
I have taught in a suburban New York school system for 35 years and have served on many interviewing teams. Review of questioning techniques and the interview scenarios can be a great help to teachers and administrators on these teams. But it is especially valuable to the prospective teacher who after reading and studying "Succeeding at Your Interview" will be prepared to face any setting or question posed at an interview. This ability means SUCCESS!
The prospective teacher will gain confidence by becoming familiar with the variety of interview formats. The 5 scenarios are-
1. An Initial School Based One to One Interview
2. An Initial Interview with a School Based Team
3. A District Based Interview with Several Principals
4. A School Based Interview with Role Playing
5. A School Based Interview with a Demonstration Lesson
Becoming familiar with the varied possibilities can prevent being caught off guard and will present a secure, confident candidate.
The reader is exposed to interviewers' questions and techniques in evaluating them. There are 7 issues that are usually discussed in interviews. These issues are reviewed with practice exercises. The questions covered are on the topics of-
1. Yourself
2. Learning Principles
3. Supporting Learning
4. Impressions of Teaching
5. Classroom Lessons
6. Personal Approaches
7. Your Questions
This book also provides guidance with gathering information about potential teaching positions, organizing the application process and suggested readings.
"Succeeding at Your Interview" is a most valuable tool for the prospective and experienced teacher before interviewing for a position as well as for the teacher on the team involved in the interviewing process. Get this book for success!

Business Under Fire.......2005-12-25
Packed with information and interviews never before available. Great. This book offers an entirely new perspective on the tragedy of terrorism. Chapter 2 alone is worth its purchase price, revealing just how devastating violence is to an economy and how rewarding it can be to rise to the challenge. Kudos to Carrison for an excellent read and tutelage.
Insights from a media war.......2005-09-17
Here is what I got from the book:
1. Don't use 'Good Morning America' to make business decisions. 'Terrorism' is the longest running 'reality show', and makes the networks big bucks. Tragedy sells. Don't be fooled into thinking it has much to do with reality.
2. Army officers make good managers, especially when the probablity of 'made for TV' violence is somewhat higher than the average chance of a fatal highway accident.
3. There is always opportunity when the consensus says there isn't any.
4. If 'made for TV' violence makes it impossible to communicate with your customers using mass media ads, use the Internet.
5. Be honest about violence, the investors and customers you want are resiliant.
6. Use the crisis to cement solidarity among your team.
7. Be realistic about your opportunities, and avoid thoughtless attachment to outdated standards.
8. Practice crisis response regularly. Don't expect to make wise spontaneous decisions while under fire. Practice, practice, practice.
9. During a crisis, providing leadership pays dividends.
This is too important a topic to let Mr. Carrison's vacuous presentation style get a passing grade. I didn't really care how he dreamt up the book, set up his interviews, or what the taxi drivers said. I don't need to read interview transcripts. Please, Mr. Carrison, find an editor!
Insightful, Educational, Inspirational.......2005-08-21
When the United States was attacked on September 11, 2001, America was changed forever. Wherever they were, people who could scurried home to be with family. The question of the day was whether the attacks were over. A whole new sense of vulnerability spread across the land like a flu virus.
Corporate executives caught the bug-fear flu. Is it over? Will it happen again? How vulnerable are we-as a nation, but also as our company? As paranoia set in, business leaders slowed plans for research and development, the building of new facilities, and the growth and development of their employees. It became more difficult to plan for the future, not knowing how the market-and each company's marketplace-would respond.
Trying to run a business-any kind of business-under the threat of terrorism was a whole new experience for the domestic operations of global American companies. With the threat hanging over their heads, at least psychologically, corporate leaders struggled to cope. Ignorance was rampant; most executives had never operated under crisis or potential crisis...and this field of leadership is certainly not taught in our business schools. Confusion reigned and many organizations became less productive, more cautious, and less profitable.
Dan Carrison observed this shift in American leadership. As a consultant, speaker, and former journalist, he realized that he was equipped-through background and skill-to create a guide to help leaders understand their new environment and how to excel under these new circumstances. So, he went to Israel to get answers. The story is more complicated than that, but you'll read about the process of Carrison's collection of information and advice.
Carrison interviewed executives in a number of fields-face-to-face-in Israel. He learned first-hand how they function in a world that is much different than what we have known in the United States. Numerous interviews are reported, with commentary. A summary list of lessons learned adds value at the end of each chapter.
Prepare to learn about creativity in a new way. Resilience, defiance, and resolute leadership make things work-"Goliath in assets, David in attitude." Carrison points out several times that just about everyone in Israel knows a victim of terrorism. This volume takes the concept of contingency management to a whole new level.
Insightful!.......2005-05-05
Author Dan Carrison deserves credit for writing an insightful book about an ongoing modern tragedy. The Palestinian terrorist attacks, which resumed in Israel in 2000, present a critical lesson for all twenty-first century businesses. Working through terrorist attacks aimed at killing civilians and disrupting normal life actually has forced Israeli executives to learn new ways of operating their businesses. Carrison interviewed leaders in various industries (airlines, hotels, high tech, advertising) who have worked to keep their businesses open, their employees safe and their customers satisfied. He actually found that many companies were revitalized. While the topic of living with danger is daunting, many Israelis have adopted better business tactics as a result of economic and physical terrorism. Oddly enough, this extreme situation leads to an uplifting business story. As a result, we recommend this very interesting book to CEOs, business owners and corporate strategists, especially in the hospitality and service industries. It will put your troubles in perspective and will help you prepare to cope with any type of crisis.
Managers across the world! Read this book!.......2005-04-13
Regardless of the type of attack an business might experience, this book deals with how to recover and make the best of a bad situation. This is not a politically motivated book, rather an insightful look at the best managers in the world today. What businesses can learn from Israeli management skills is that emergencies can occur naturally or unaturally. When they do occur, business might know how to survive the storm and rebuild.

Book Description
You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again meets The Bonfire of the Vanities, as told by...a male Bridget Jones? And it all really happened. In 1995 high-flying British journalist Toby Young left London for New York to become a contributing editor at Vanity Fair. Other Brits had taken Manhattan--Alistair Cooke, Tina Brown, Anna Wintour--so why couldn't he?
But things didn't quite go according to plan. Within the space of two years he was fired from Vanity Fair, banned from the most fashionable bar in the city, and couldn't get a date for love or money. Even the local AA group wanted nothing to do with him.
How to Lose Friends and Alienate People is Toby Young's hilarious and best-selling account of the five years he spent looking for love in all the wrong places and steadily working his way down the New York food chain, from glossy magazine editor to crash-test dummy for interactive sex toys. A seditious attack on the culture of celebrity from inside the belly of the beast, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People is also a "nastily funny read." (USA Today)
Customer Reviews:
just what I would be like.......2006-11-12
What a great book, when you get past all the political talk at the beginning.
Great stories from a normal person trying to be someone he's not. A great fish out of water story. I loved it.
Status anxiety.......2006-08-27
Poor Toby Young. This is the memoir of the British journalist, Toby Young, who changed tack on a promising career in London (including a stint at editing the spiky but ill fated Modern Review during which he managed to piss pretty much everyone off including Robert Maxwell) and tried to make it in New York at the Queen of glossy high society mags, Vanity Fair.
Unfortunately for Toby, he suffers, as he freely admits, from an anti charm, a quasi aspergers syndrome entailing that he offends almost anyone he encounters. In a world where looks, glamour and superficial charm are the key denominators of hierarchy, what chance does a bald, poor, rude journalist stand?
Toby Young prides himself on being obnoxious, and positive reviews claim he garners sympathy for doing so. Admittedly, some of his stories in this memoir are funny, but I didn't feel any sympathy for Toby. The people who strike him down are arrogant, superficial, and out for fame and attention at all costs - but then so is Toby. Who really wins in this bonfire of all vanities?
God, I feel stupid..........2006-08-12
I suppose the dollar or so I was able to pick this thing up for here at Amazon should have told me something. Young is a really unappealing character and just not very funny. Why he has been paid to follow this thing up with a second book is way beyond me. I too hate this guy.
Self-Skewering and Funny Biography.......2006-07-26
Toby Young's story begins with a nebulous one-month job offer from "Vanity Fair" in New York. Having just closed his British journalistic enterprise, Young is delighted and hopes to achieve great things in America. His missteps begin with Day 1 - he reports to work dressed in his (British) version of casual, and finds himself mistaken for a messenger. Then en route to his "office," he's shown a broom closet that's his, which he takes to be his changing room - actually, it's an office he shares with another.
An early task consists of writing up selected society event photos - however, when he calls the subject up for background information she hangs up in response to his nativity about N.Y. society. Next he loses his British girlfriend after she comes to visit for a weekend, and suffers several severe frights. Then a benign comment leads to chastisement for sexual harassment, which Toby learns is really a means of keeping dweebs like himself away from the high-society models. Trying to avenge being upstaged by his office-made, Toby hires a stripper for his birthday - turns out its also "Bring your daughter to work day!" Hearing an acquaintance refer to a celebrity while talking to someone Toby didn't know, he jumps into the conversation with negatives points - then learns the other person is the celebrity's publicist.
Throughout "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People" Toby is repeatedly trying to gain entry to "in" events, and usually turned away, or thrown out almost as soon as he gets in. Clearly he feels ill-at-ease - noting that Americans are much more status-conscious than Brits. The end of his Vanity Fair tenure comes soon after a major article on London that he proposed - seems like he had a "brown thumb."
He applies to the New York Times - his material is returned without comment, except that every spelling and grammar error is circled. Toby then descends into nightly binges, and gets written up in a gossip column.
Meanwhile, his love life is doing as bad, or worse. Toby tries a $195 dating coach, but it's no help. At the same time, a British friend that went to the U.S. at about the same time is doing great - further deflating his ego.
Gets a six-month job as writer at "Gear," and meets a new girl - also from England. They become friends, but he decides he's not in love. She moves onto an American lawyer - just as he realizes he is in love with her. Fortunately, a year later they separate, he pursues her back across the Atlantic, proposes (turned down), but is accepted for a three-month trial period. Toby passes, they marry,
Not as funny as I was led to believe.......2006-07-20
Review after review, from regular people on here to book critics to even the librarian. ALL of them tell me how drop dead hilarious this book is. As funny as "Clerks" one tells me. Well it did have its moments, but it was only halfway funny.
Sure it was fun to read how a loser lives, and his stories were funny. But HILARIOUS?! Nope... understand he has a "sequel" of sorts out. I'll borrow it from the library this time, at least then all I'll waste is my time!

A Veritable Guide to Instant Disrepute.......2005-08-10
In 1936 Dale Carnegie, esteemed speaker and motivator, published his masterpiece on human relations entitled, How to Win Friends and Influence People. A year later, Irving Tressler followed up with a companion guide for those moving in the opposite direction.
I happened upon this oddity while browsing through the shelves of the library, and borrowed it to see what stuff the writer was made of. It must have been hard stuff. For in the book you will see chapters with headings like, How to Make People Dislike You Instantly; How to Make a Poor First Impression, Give a Dog a Bad Name, etc. Every single one lives up to its promise.
This book is sidesplitting; actually I got so weak laughing I could not lift it up. The entire text was swallowed up at one sitting (OK maybe one lying).
I admit it is entirely a parody of Dale Carnegie's work up to the introduction by Thomas Lowell (Carnegie's was by Lowell Thomas). Yet it is more than a caricature, because some of the advice can be applied. After all, who has not had an uncle Ernie who drops to the house unannounced, or a friend, Jimmy who pesters you to double date with him every weekend?
As you consider your mortality and your declining privacy, as you ponder how to enjoy these transient pleasures, you might just be tempted to apply the untried and untested principles of this exotic burlesque: How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.
