Learn by example.......2002-11-17

If you have never wrote your resume (vitae), this book offers you a lot of examples that would give you an idea of what format and contents are good for your case. The "theory" is shown in a few pages. Just to tell you what you should write and avoid, including a list of verbs to help you writing.

There are also some examples of cover letters that I found useful. They show you the style, length and other features of these documents.

You would think that four stars may be too high if you have read other books on this subject, but I took only this book and it was enough for me: I was called for an interview. I am not giving five stars because I have not compared the book with any other.

All resumes no how to.......2002-01-11

This book is basically all sample resumes, which I don't find very helpful. It is probably better to tell someone how to write a good resume than give them a bunch of examples and tell them to copy them. So if you just want examples and about 7 pages of writing go for it otherwise, not worth it.

Excellent materials.......2003-08-31

_America's Working Women_ is a magnificient and thorough anthology of the female experience in America. I was particularly impressed and pleased that not just European - American women were included, but also Native Americans, immigrants (just off the boat from where-ever), Asian - Americans, African - Americans, Hispanic - Americans ... it is very comprehensive in this regard.

Baxandall also covers a wide variety of issues within women working - from colonial indentured servitude, to women in the early industrial revolution, to the rather significant part women played in the creation of labor unions (including an piece on sexism in the work place in the 1970's).

As a history teacher, I am frequently frustrated at the relative lack of materials that have the authentic voice of women in history. _America's Working Women_ provides that voice (at long last). While I would imagine the book would be a bit dry for most to read cover to cover, it nonetheless has some remarkable documents detailing the struggle women have had for their place alongside men - first in the work place, and now (finally!) in the history books.

"America's Working Women" should be on a shelf in every woman's home. I am so impressed by the way Baxandall and Gordon use personal stories and wonderful narrative to illustrate the history of women in the labor force.

Growing up in Salt Lake City, Utah I have been constantly bombarded with the myth that my place was in the home and that it wasn't my responsibility to have a career. I was encouraged to abandon my career and take on "traditional" female roles. Deep down I knew otherwise, but I didn't have any evidence to support what I believed.

But nine decades ago, it was entirely common to find a seven-year-old boy selling a newspaper, digging in the fields, or standing in an assembly line. Photographer Lewis W. Hines images of these child workers serve as disturbing evidence of Americas dark side, a time before common beliefs about poverty had shifted. Hines photographs inspired the Progressive reform movement and the professionalization of social work. With his camera, Hine (1874-1940) helped make possible the everlasting efforts of the National Child Labor Committee. Lewis Hine: Children at Work explores the world of juvenile workers in mills, mines, canneries, fields, and city streets throughout America with shocking candor and insight. Featuring large, high-quality black-and-white photographs, Children at Work is at once impressive and shocking, beautiful yet utterly heartbreaking. These are images that no adult American will soon forget. The text, by the New York Times photographic critic Vicki Goldberg, chronicles the aims of the NCLC as well as Hines own personal history. A former factory worker and teacher, Hines passion for photography developed out of his need to document the social conditions of his time. He traveled throughout the United States with his camera, hoping to spur anti-child labor lobbyists into action and bring about legislation to curb child labor. Hine was one of this countrys earliest documentaries. His photographs had a dramatic, dual effect: they would inspire legendary social change and, at the same time, imply dignity to laborers of all kinds in various difficult and menial occupations.

Lewis W. Hine, Children At Work.......2004-10-06

A wonderful synopsis of the crisis that occurred between the late 1800's to the mid 1940's when Child Labor Laws weren't enacted or enforced. To see the life in these photos and the dangers surrounding the kids at work and just the lethargic expressions of a difficult life that they were born into, as young as 4 years of age! Unimaginable to think that this occurred not to long ago... can't imagine our kids going through this now.

A very Good Book.......2003-02-07

this was a excellent book. I have always thought occasionally about child labor but Brushed it off before long. However when i read this book it made it so real and I realized just how powerful its hold on the world had become. Once you read this book you see these children in your minds eye, mistreated and exploted worked to their death with a life not worth living because of selfish peoples never ending greed. Anyone that could do such things to children makes me wonder how far mankind has truly come.

A stirring book

This book is wonderful. You gaze at the pictures and the children seem to stare back at you wanting to tell you their story. I teach social studies and wanted to show my students what child labor in factories and mills was actually like.It is disturbing to witness these barefoot, dirty children working so hard for pennies. Hines photographs allow you, the reader, to view one moment in their lives. We have come so far and thankfully this take of child abuse is no longer allowed in America. This book is a wonderful addition to any classroom or library. We need to know our past before we can shape the future.

Muddy Boots and Ragged Aprons.......2000-06-16

My mom was born in working class Detroit, shortly after the period coved by this book. It literally made her cry. I will bring back lots of memories for natives and give a new generation a glimpse into what life was like for inner city dwellers during this important part of Detroit's history. This book fills a great void. So much of Michigan history is focused on the auto industry, the lakefront or the fashionable "Pointes". This book addresses the visual history of Detroit from the working class point of view. Great factories dominated the landscape. This book finds beauty and passion in the grit.Not only great for Detroit natives, any student of inner city history will enjoy this book. The photographs are beautifully produced and the narrative is well written. The authors' familiarity and great research shine through. This book is a "must" for anyone interested in urban studies, photography and history.

THE LOST EPISODES, VOLUME 1 (4 cassettes) is a must-have for any Bob and Ray enthusiast. Here you can enjoy dozens of choice cuts from the great comedic duo's live radio work on station WOR in (I believe) the 1970's, many of which show them at top form. The highlight is the episodes of their mock soap opera "Mary Backstayge, Noble Wife". Join "America's favorite family of the footlights" as they tour New England towns with their Broadway show, WESTCHESTER FURIOSO, the centerpiece of which is "In Your Hat" - an appallingly bad production number worthy of "Springtime for Hitler". There are also such delightful nuggets as The Trophy Train, Charles the Poet, "The Gathering Dusk", "Elmer W. Litzinger, Spy", and more. Bob and Ray spoofed the snail's-pace of soap operas to perfection. Their wizardry with voices, sound effects, and music is enthralling. Bob and Ray INHABITED their characters, imbuing them with layers of reality and with interior lives - witness the wonderful Studio Talk bits. This is creative radio at its best. Bob and Ray take aim at commercials - and much more........1999-08-05

This collection is an odd mix of Bob and Ray's live radio routines, from early in their career on Boston's WHDH, to New York on CBS and NBC. It's interesting, and funny, to hear them take aim at the local merchants paying for airtime on WHDH. Some "Mary Backstayge" routines are included as well, and just a few routines were previously released. It's interesting to hear how their style evolved from rambunctious to rehearsed - but almost always hilarious if not just plain funny. While this isn't the best collection to serve as an introduction to their large body of work, it's a "must have" nevertheless. Even though the sound quality ranges from fair to good, and just plain awful in one old commercial, it doesn't seem to matter when Bob and Ray are on the air.
