This book examines the impact of globalization on frontier cities, and how various frontier cities in different regions have responded to these forces. The volume includes a number of theoretical chapters exploring various aspects of global change, including the economic, spatial and geopolitical dimensions. A longer section includes a number of case studies of frontier cities that have adapted to these changes. A number of countries as well as city types, from small towns to frontier metropolises, are examined, providing a broad overview of developmental alternatives. For hardcore Harvard collectors only........2004-06-12

As a Harvard alum, I was eager to get my hands on this book. The reality, however, is much less than the promise, especially coming from one of the world's best university presses. The coverage is not especially broad or deep. Instead, one finds a moderately full selection of moderately informative entries on the better-known aspects of Harvard. It's also far from mistake-free (to give one small example, the protagonist in the movie "With Honors" did, contrary to what A to Z says, have a copy of his thesis on his computer, but his computer was fried).

Mostly reprints of old articles.......2004-05-27

Many articles in this 2. edition are just reprints of articles from the 1 edition. It is a real problem that the articles are not dated or have otherwise been indicated whether they are new in this edition (from 2003) or have just been reprinted without updating from the first edition which was published in 73 volumes from 1968 until 2003. (Vol 1-33 A-Z; Vol. 34+35 = Index; Vol 36-73 = supplements)

For example, the article "Philosophy of Science" was pubished in 1977. It is reprinted in the 2nd edition without any changes in content (only typographical changes such as two columns). In the 2nd edition we are misinformed that this entry is "Print Published: 05/20/2003 | Online Published: 06/23/2003". The readers are thus misled concerning what they are reading. This is tru for many articles, I guess much more than 50%.

The only way you can tell whether the article is revised or updated is by looking at the references and see if new references are included - in most cases they are not (alternatively, of course compare the articles in the two editions page by page).

Both the first edition and the second edition have a heavy emphazis on specific libraries in specific countries and is weak in theoretical and conceptual issues.

When this is said, it should be said that there are many important articles in this work and it is an obvious advantage that it is available online and the papers available as pdf-files. I have now read usefull articles that I would not have read if I had to make paper copies from the old edition.

Good For Beginner.......2007-07-13

This book provides a good summary of important managerial skills. Briner does a good job of correlating these skills with the life and teachings of Jesus although at times he seems to be reaching to make the correlation. I'm new to management and I chose this book because of the title. It is an easy read. I enjoyed Briner's engaging writing style. Each management skill is presented individually in a chapter, which allows for easy class discussion. Overall I think it is a great book for managers and Christians.

Having read dozens of books, and listened to plenty of tapes on management, this handy book clearly summarized what any "economic ministry" (business) must follow to successfully serve God by serving His people. It's even a better resource for faith communities and their leaders. Get one for your pastors, priests and ministers. It makes a great thank you gift!

Not Worth It!.......2004-02-02

I was caught by the title of this book and couldn't wait to read it in one sitting since it is quite small. I was so sorely disappointed. There wasn't any redeeming qualities at all.

This book failed in 2 major areas: 1. It gives us nothing of values when it comes to management skills. Very poor in showing any application in what the author would submit as a "management" statement. They would be better qualified as "one liners" or thoughts fom a manager. Though even at that there was no defense or application at all.

2. I had expected to read Jesus's thoughts on management; deep insights from the one called the Son of God; at least a little ray of light from heaven. Absolutely NOTHING!!! This is a blatant example of exploitation on the name of Jesus. It is almost as if the christian market was targeted and yet only light sprinkles from the Bible or a quote would satisfy the target.

I honestly believe that the "manangement" points were selected and then a supporting verse or Biblical statement was searched for to add on and call it Jesus's.

This book is a sham. Maybe I feel strongly about this review because I know the Bible and I teach leadership skills internationally.

As a corporate middle manager and as a Christian, I was intrigued by this slim volume. I was encouraged by its message of servant leadership, but wished for greater depth and detail. I also felt that the author stretched some of the quoted scriptures to fit the chosen topic, to the extent that I was occasionally uncertain as to how the scripture supported the topic.

Mr. Briner does an excellent job of bringing out some of the basic principles of management and tying them into the teachings of Christ. Very readable and thought-provoking without (pardon the pun) preaching.
