    Book Description

In their successful text, Shen and Kong cover fundamentals of static and dynamic electromagnetism fields and waves. The authors employ a unique approach, beginning with a study of Maxwell's equations and waves and covering electromagnetic fields later. This presentation allows students to work with electromagnetic concepts using relatively simple computational analysis, building in a logical progression to more complex topics and mathematical methods for analysis. The Third Edition provides computer-based problems, homework problems, end-of-chapter summaries, and a rich collection of real-world application examples that include discussion of cellular phone and microwave exposure limits set by IEEE; safety concerns about electromagnetic fields from power lines; new and powerful magnets; and single-mode optical fibers.

4 out of 5 stars Great Electromagnetics book.......2006-02-23

Pros: Relate EM into real life examples, which makes the book interesting to read. Simple but powerful examples and equations which made my life a lot easier.
Cons: Lack of example and pratice problems.
Overall: Very nice book to read for understanding of the materials, but you'll need to pratice problems on your own.

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible Book.......2000-10-17

I'm currently in an electromagnetics course that uses this book and this book is awful. The author cannot explain the concepts in a clear manner. The author skips parts of the explaination leaving me confused as to what he did. Also the examples in the book are not very good, an answer is given with little or no work. The book needs more examples and needs to explain the concepts much better. If you're in a course that uses this book get another book, such as Schaum's Outline of Electromagnetics. From a student point of view, this is a horrible book.

    4 out of 5 stars Non-traditional ordering of chapters.......2000-05-13

I just completed a junior-level course which made use of this text. Although the topics are arranged differently than in similar textbooks, I found the explainations of EM concepts quite good. The main strength is getting right to Maxwell's equations in chapter two (--after all, that's what EM is all about, right?). Maxwell's equations are explained well and at an introductory level so that the reader is not overwhelmed. The main weakness is the very underdeveloped first chapter, "Complex Vectors" which is too brief and oversimplified for the subject matter at hand. The book also presents very informative and even entertaining asides on applications, such as "anti-glare headlights" (polarization), "tails of comets" (radiation pressure) and "microwave ovens" (penetration depth). Overall, a very good first EM book.

    1 out of 5 stars A don't buy.......2000-02-21

This was not a good book. I found it very difficult tounderstand and learn from. It is the required text for a class I'min. I am currently looking around Amazon.com for a text to replace it. Save money. Buy something else.

      Book Description

Microcontinuum field theories constitute an extension of classical field theories -- of elastic bodies, deformations, electromagnetism, and the like -- to microscopic spaces and short time scales. Material bodies are here viewed as collections of large numbers of deformable particles, much as each volume element of a fluid in statistical mechanics is viewed as consisting of a large number of small particles for which statistical laws are valid. Classical continuum theories are valid when the characteristic length associated with external forces or stimuli is much larger than any internal scale of the body under consideration. When the characteristic lengths are comparable, however, the response of the individual constituents becomes important, for example, in considering the fluid or elastic properties of blood, porous media, polymers, liquid crystals, slurries, and composite materials. This volume is concerned with the kinematics of microcontinua. It begins with a discussion of strain, stress tensors, balance laws, and constitutive equations, and then discusses applications of the fundamental ideas to the theory of elasticity.

      1 out of 5 stars Awful book.......2003-03-11

If you can, try to convince your prof not to use this book. I'm not kidding. I've always done well with physics, from high school (AP) and my previous semester course in college. This book, even though I'm familiar with most of the concepts, is AWFUL, and most of the students (myself included) in my class are struggling with it. The writing style, even as a physics book, is bland. The explanations and example problems aren't great.

In my mind, the worst is that it lacks answers in the back. And if you're like most of the students I know, you're accustomed to having the answers to the odd numbered questions in the back, just so that you know what you're doing or at least know whether or not you're right. Try Schaum or Cutnell; those are great

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A090123. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The US Army is currently developing a new variant of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle the M2A3 also known as the BFVS-A3. The new vehicle will include a number of modifications to the current M2A2 vehicle as a result of combat experience during Operation Desert Storm. The modifications have resulted from a need to upgrade the Bradley Fighting Vehicle System (BFVS) to facilitate enhanced command and control lethality,, survivability, mobility, and sustainability, to defeat current and future threat forces. The purpose of this thesis is to compare the two variants of vehicle in the Pre-test Modeling phase of the Model-Test--Model concept. This thesis used the Janus high resolution combat model, to simulate the vehicles and weapon systems under two scenarios, a Head-to-Head scenario, and a Force-on-Force scenario. The Head-to-Head scenario is a simulation of the future Limited User Test 2 to be conducted by TEXCOM. The Force-on-Force scenario is a simulated battle between a Bradley platoon and a Soviet style tank heavy company. Data was gathered from the Janus created postprocessor files of the two scenarios. The analysis compared four measures of effectiveness (MOEs), in the areas of detection, engagement, lethality, and survivability. The aim of the analysis was to detect differences between the vehicle variants using the two sample T-test and the Mann-Whitney- Wilcoxen test.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A343683. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In 1998, Commander, Marine Corps Logistics Bases established the Executive Planning Group (EPG) to develop and coordinate strategy to enhance the depots' maintenance and supply capabilities in order to increase the competitiveness of their services and provide a direction for future depot operations. One of the intiatives introduced by the EPG was to conduct an analysis to determine if consolidating depot maintenance for the LAV from the current workload scenario at two depots, to a single site, results in the most efficient allocation of resources. We use spreadsheet models to conduct a comparative cost and savings analysis between the current split workload scenario and a single site scenario at each depot. We address costs and savings resulting from data such as infrastructure requirements, transportation, inventory reductions, and reduction in personnel structure requirements. We also address additional issues such as the impact on readiness and surge capacity. Our results vary significantly depending on the selection of depot for single siting. We show that single siting at one depot results in annual savings from the current workload scenario, while single siting at the other depot increases annual costs from the current workload scenario.

The Storming Media report number is A434843. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: For aggregated combat simulation models, the methods for calculating force attrition must be based upon sound mathematical formulations and parameter estimations. With an inherent lack of representative combat data for modern warfare scenarios, one effective method for determining the required parameter estimates is to thoroughly analyze the output from a stochastically based high- resolution combat model. It is this development of attrition parameters process, which so profoundly influences the validity of aggregated simulations, that lacks any comprehensive documentation or mathematical justification within the modeling community. By examining the development and validity of these processes for parameter estimation, valid attrition calibration formulae can be determined and used within force attrition algorithms in order to more precisely and justifiably model aggregated combat operations. The establishment of a user- friendly test bed for examining this attrition rate development process will play a major role in solidifying the understanding, implementation, and validation of current and future process techniques.

                      Book Description

Historians know what St.Petersburg's industrial workers did during the revolution of 1905-7, the strike wave of 1912-14, and the revolutions of 1917. What they still do not know, however, is who these people were, where they came from, what were the paths of recruitment into industry that they followed, and what were their socio-economic characteristics. Evel Economakis analyses the processes of proletarianization and urbanization undergone by St.Petersburg's industrial working class from its inception in the early nineteenth century up until 1914.

                      Book Description

You're Not As Good As You Think You Are is an important addition to the field of self-help literature.

You think you're swell, don't you? That you're God's gift to the Universe, the cream in everyone else's coffee. Well, you're wrong, and it's getting on everyone's nerves. The problem is you're too good, too pumped, too motivated. You need to come down to earth, to realize that when all is said and done, you're little more than a speed bump on the highway of life. You need a crash course in the principles of demotivational psychology.

Based on the exemplary work of "Sugar" Roy Carboyle, a self-taught therapist, You're Not as Good as You Think You Are offers a user-friendly guide to building a less significant you. Each chapter provides theory, life examples, and valuable "Mental Exercises" designed to help you hone your self-effacing skills as you strive to be the least you can be.

By following the steps laid out in this groundbreaking book, you too can feel really bad about yourself.

2 out of 5 stars They are less good than they think they are.......2007-03-08

This book turns motivational science on its head and provides the antidote to the common-place 'ra-ra' of self-help books.

It is good for the occasional laugh...and little else.

4 out of 5 stars Less Acerbic Than Logical Positivism.......2005-11-26

This book is great in concept, and generally follows through in execution. It is the perfect antidote to the pretentious motivational publications that are nearly inescapable and which exist only to pander to the notion of self esteem through praise (versus actual accomplishment.)

Chris Gudgeon skewers the motivational industry like few others could. The book uses relentless satire and sarcasm to mock virtually every aspect of the feel-good industry, with examples such as "The Win/Whine Paradigm Matrix," "The Power of Negative Thinking," Men are from Mars, Dogs are from Pluto," and, of course, "Chicken Coops for the Soul."

Some of the jokes begin to wear a bit thin by the end, but overall this is a very well done piece of satire that is a quick, easy, and fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Demotivational Book Got Me Going.......2001-04-21

A fast, funny book that finally bursts the bubble of all those crazy self-help books. I like the pith bits of wisdome like "You always get a second chance to make a bad impression" and "A journey of a single step starts with a thousand excuses." This book was a big bestseller in Canada, and it's easy to see why. There's a great comic mind at work here.

                      5 out of 5 stars Utterly hilarious........2000-01-17

If you are inbetween books and would like to read something fresh, witty, and quick, this book is it! I read it during sporadic 5 minute breaks over a few days and people were staring at me because I was laughing so hard! Really, it will make you laugh out loud. Buy the book. Feel good. Pass it on to a friend.

4 out of 5 stars This book takes the craze of self help to a new level!.......1998-02-11

This book takes a great big laughable stab at the self help industry by reducing it to a profit generating circus of personality evaluation. My only gripe was that the book did succeed in demotivating me-- the attempt for a laugh was so blatent at times, it made me feel like I couldn't understand a joke unless it was bold and italicised.
