A perfect book for linux network programming.......2000-10-01

If you are a linux lover and want to dig into client/server (socket) programming , this book is a good choice.

Compared with Steven's Unix Network Programming, this book is more simply and clearly written. Not like Steven who is an expert in explaining details, Comer is good at giving a sound explanation of the network programming principle both in theory and in practice. You will find nice "Algorithm" part in many of the examples which is a good abstraction of the general problem. So after the reading you will feel comfortable because of the gain in not only knowledge but also the kind of insight you could use toward other problems. As a distinguished professor in computer science, Comer spells out the single word of engineering ,"Simplicity is beauty", again by presenting this clearly written TCP/IP programming book.

Many engineers and students experience difficulty in making sense of issues associated with IP and ATM teletraffic techniques. This is partly because of the subject itself: networks are flexible, complicated, and still evolving. Excellent introductory testbook on network analysis.......1999-10-01

The book is "pricey" at $99.05 and that is why I rated it 4-stars instead of 5. I just started teaching a technical electronics course at ITT Technical Institute which uses this book as its main text. I was a little rusty on several topics when I realized that I was again becoming proficient as I was teaching the material with the aid of this book. The author treats each topic in a clear and concise manner. The examples he uses are relevant and an excellent choice for each topic. As a side note, most if not all electronic textbooks are full of distracting errors and this book seems to have kept them down to a minimum. I commend the author for this observance to detail. Also, he changed simulation programs from PSpice to Electronic Workbench. I can not figure out why when PSpice is sort of an "industry standard". Anyway, I have learned to use yet another simulation program. I have added this book to my special collection of technical references. J.W. Heckendorf.

Description:
In this paper we analyze a queueing system with a general service scheduling function. There are two types of customer with different service requirements. The service order for customers of each type is determined by the service scheduling function @a"k(i,j) where @a"k(i,j) is the probability for type-k customer to be selected when there are i type-1 and j type-2 customers. This model is motivated by traffic control to support traffic streams with different traffic characteristics in telecommunication networks (in particular, ATM networks). By using the embedded Markov chain and supplementary variable methods, we obtain the queue-length distribution as well as the loss probability and the mean waiting time for each type of customer. We also apply our model to traffic control to support diverse traffics in telecommunication networks. Finally, the performance measures of the existing diverse scheduling policies are compared. We expect to help the system designers select appropriate scheduling policy for their systems.

This is an excellent and comprehensive text on Circuit Analysis. One can rather call it a great book on network analysis. This course is purely based on mathematics, and so it requires a strong foundation in differential equations, calculus and matrix algebra.

The author develops the concepts and presents them in a manner that can only be described as thorough and comprehensible. The author places emphasis on the use of computers in problem solving. The book I own has computer programs in FORTRAN, which I do not know. However I used the same principles to develop programs in C, which worked perfectly fine.

A good, useful text - extremely well-written.
