5 out of 5 stars Powerful portfolios for any medium.......1999-03-31

This is probably the only book of its kind that pinpoints an often over-looked job search tool: portfolios. I took Martin's concepts further by applying them to Web resumes. The Web is the perfect medium to incorporate items once considered taboo in traditional paper résumés. This is an excellent primer on developing portfolios that can apply to any medium, whether it is in digital form or on paper.

5 out of 5 stars Actual Personal Statements from Successful Applicants.......2006-07-26

If you are planning to attend a graduate or professional school, you will have to submit a successful application, accompanied by a first-rate personal statement.

Of all the tasks we usually face when applying to graduate and professional schools, from choosing universities to preparing for and taking admission and standardized tests, from soliciting recommendations to having transcripts send out, writing a good personal essay is among the most important and difficult to accomplish. The strong competition for admissions to grad schools, the personal statement often becomes a crucial element of your application package. It is the one element that can set you apart from the competition and open the door to your successful application.

This book describes the mistakes that applicants commonly make, and offer advice on how to make your statements as effective as possible. This handy reference is packed with inside advice and proven strategies to help you get into your first choice schools. Among other things you will learn:

    - What questions are asked an all the most popular professional and graduate school applications.
    - How to create and write personal essays that impress admission officials.
    - What goes into a recommendation letter, and who should write it.
    - How to handle in-person interviews.

Absolutely a must have for anyone applying to graduate and professional school.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating example essays, Advice from admission directors.......2003-02-12

I find the previous review disturbing. It is obviously the editor or author of the book giving themselves kudos.

I liked the book. It made me realize that the personal statement should not only be a self-marketting piece, but also be entertaining enough as to not get sorted into the circular file.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Perfect Personal Statements.......2001-12-08

Every year, college students across the country prepare to enter the workforce or graduate school. One important part of this process is writing a personal statement that describes and applicant's goals, experiences, and future plans. Mark Alan Stewart is an expert on graduate level entrance exams. His book, Perfect Personal Statements, provides information and advice for college students seeking admission to graduate and professional schools.
Stewart's book is easy to read and understand. He answers the common questions like, "How will my essay be evaluated?" and "Should I discuss that glaring blemish in my past, or should I ignore it?" Stewart also provides students with minor details, like how to dress for an in-person interview. Finally, the advice from medical, law, and business school experts could prove to be helpful. The experts provide specific information about what they look for in an application. Each type of school has different standards and it is beneficial to know what admission offices across the country like to see.
College students applying to graduate schools tend to be very busy. They don't have time to read a long and confusing book. Mark Alan Stewart seems to have kept this in mind. He has packed a lot of information into only 114 pages. The book is also divided into sections that allow the reader to quickly find information on certain subjects. Stewart's book helps to simplify the application process and provides students with strategies to prevent them from feeling overwhelmed and frustrated.

3 out of 5 stars Good not great.. but real example.......2001-02-19

The title said so. This is the guide for writing statement. Unlike other books, this book won't show the typical format. This book, however, shows the "real" statement of applicant who success. Many examples are interesting. Moreover, the guideline of recommend letter request is very good. It's not only for people who ask letter of recommendation, but also for the recommendation letter writter can see what they should said to thier students. I disagree with other reviewer that this book is not limited only Law, Business, and Medical school. It's true that the title said it and the examples are to Law, Business and Medical school. However, if you read it carefully, many examples and guidelines can be used in other school as well. This book is well written and organized. However, due to limited resource, example and guideline, this book is only in 3 stars.

3 out of 5 stars only good for law, business and medical school applicants.......1999-10-16

This book is nice for people applying to law, business or medical school but doesn't cover anything for other programs.

It's the great contemporary struggle--finding work that satisfies the soul and fills the purse. In the old days, you'd have mended shoes, tempered iron, or tilled the fields, and if there was food on the table and your children were healthy, you'd count yourself a success. But those times are long past. Now there's the pernicious concept of job satisfaction to deal with, plus requisite baubles like 27-inch televisions, Pentium-chip computers, and name-brand sneakers to purchase, and so the pressure mounts. If you're vying with notions like downsizing and job marketability, it's worth looking at the jobs of the future. Shelly Field lists 100 careers, from geriatric social worker and travel agent to CAD specialist and pet sitter. For each, she provides a job description, earning range, recommended education and training, and necessary skills, personality traits, experience, and qualifications. She then spends a couple pages discussing just what the job is like, what the employment opportunities are, and what the future holds for that position.

Where do you apply if you're fresh out of college and mom's saying, "Get a job?" With a mortgage to pay off, do you stay in the old job you hate or make a change? Shelly Field's guide to careers of the 21st century doesn't answer these questions directly, it doesn't replace old-fashioned soul-searching and creative initiative, nor does it tell you what to do if you've got the soul of a poet with champagne tastes, but it's a great, practical place to start the process of matching you (your interests and skills) with reality (the job market). --Stephanie Gold

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR ANSWERS ABOUT CAREERS.......2000-05-27

I buy all of Field's career books. This one in particular is good if you're looking for a specific career to get into. It tells you everything you need to know and gives you options you probably wouldn't have thought of. As one of the other reviewers mentioned, I too, went to Field's web site as listed in the book. I had a couple of questions about getting the job I wanted. I too, e-mailed her and she answered right away.

I was in between jobs and found this book. What I thought was great was that the author gave a full description of each job and then followed it with everything you needed to know if you wanted that job. Field also gave her website in case you wanted to ask personal career questions. If you want a job, check it out. It's a great book.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book Ever For Careers.......2000-04-26

I was in between jobs and found this book. It gave me some great ideas to consider which I hadn't thought about. What I really liked was that each job the author wrote about had complete information. Field gave a full description plus everything I needed to choose a job. She even listed her website where she answers personal questions. This is the best book I've found for getting a job. If you're looking for a job check it out too. Thanks.

Peterson's "Job Opportunities in Engineering and Computer Science" is a great book to find engineering company overviews. It list opportunities in architecture, biotechnology, computer programming, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and technology. Be sure you have loads of time to wade through the all the information. It lists a fairly detailed description, the company website, human resources manager, telephone and fax number, company size, location, type, top competitors, and more.

If you are about to graduate to looking for a new job, this is a great place to start your search.

3 out of 5 stars Peterson's Engineer and Computer Science Careers.......2000-04-05

This book gives people interested in Computer Science and Engineering a relatively comprehensive look at the various career options available to them. It discusses the educational requirements necessary for various positions, the starting salary of the positions and a short description of the work that would be performed. The only thing I found lacking in this book was the amount of information given regarding the specific job. I would have preferred more detail when describing the actual tasks of each position. Otherwise, I found the book quite helpful and I feel it painted a realistic portrait of most entry level positions available for engineers and computer science majors.

              Book Description

In The Death and Rebirth of American Radicalism, Stanley Aronowitz asks the question, "Is there anything left of the Left?" With the rise of Newt Gingrich and his "Contract With America," how is it that conservativism staged such a remarkable recovery after being discounted in the turbulent 1960s? Aronowitz addresses these and other burning issues of contemporary politics.

Beginning with a broad analysis of the historical left, he examines such aspects as popular movements for social justice, cultural radicalism, the New Left-including the author's memoir of the Sixties, and postmodern radicalism. The Death and Rebirth of American Radicalism sharply differentiates the "Social Justice Left" from "Cultural Radicalism" and the various movements for "rights" that evolved from the New Left movements of the Sixites. Aronowitz's point of view is truly unique in that he does not assert that the Left is in trouble because it "lost" the culture and political wars of previous decades. Instead, he argues that the next Left must envision not merely more equality or opportunity, but develop a radical democratic movement that seeks a solution to the economic, political and cultural crisis of our time.

5 out of 5 stars An early work of an unacknowledged master of humor.......1999-06-11

Will Cuppy always managed to say something funny, no matter what the subject. His humor often was very dry and subtle, and at its best can have you chuckling over some comment for days. This is an early work of his, and his style does not seem fully developed. Nonetheless, you will find many of the unique observations and ways of describing the world (and its inhabitants) that make his later books true masterpieces.

This book has a remarkably "modern" feel to it, and will be a revelation to anybody who thinks that books must be topical to pack a punch. This volume, written over 65 years ago, still is remarkably incisive and witty today. Indeed, reviewers of Cuppy's time fell all over themselves trying to find somebody with whom they could compare him. The best most of them could do was cite Mark Twain, but in the final analysis Cuppy has the distinct advantage over him in writing short humorous essays.
