5 out of 5 stars Not just for 'tweens.......2007-07-10

Disney tends to target its Imagineering messages and publications to a junior high/high school audience, but these exercises can benefit all age groups. Unlike most Disney products, this book doesn't pound you over the head with Disney cross-promotions/cross-marketing. There are obviously plenty of references to Disneyland and Disney World (since those are the two primary venues for Imagineering projects), but it's not heavy-handed, and the exercises are each geared toward "real-world" application.

This little volume was a great first read and will no doubt get pulled down from its slot amongst my writing and other creativity books and thumbed through on a regular basis.

    5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-03-22

This book really is useful and should be read by all high school students! We need to make sure that children learn creative thinking and this book is well suited to help teach this.

5 out of 5 stars Great techniques to use on the job and in life........2006-07-15

This book, like its title says, really will help you shape your creative muscles. The exercises that are provided are good and often can help you see things in a way you would have otherwise never imagined.

You don't need to be in the entertainment industry to find value in this book, there are practical stories of creativity; such as creating a more engaging party by giving it a themed story, thus giving every decision you make a direction.

You can begin to apply the concepts immediately and begin to consciously think about creative solutions to problems you might be facing at home or at work.

5 out of 5 stars For decades I have admired Imagineers..........2006-03-19

This insightful journey into the world of Imagineering is one sparkling with all of the mystery, surprise, magic and the element of believing to make it wonderful for boys or girls of any age, who want to reach beyond todays limits... you will have no limits on what you can accomplish, Disney is a great place to get a boost.

5 out of 5 stars Good book on the subject.......2006-02-14

Totally disagree with the other two readers, this is a good one I read this book ten years ago and still on my bookshelf. If it is not as other books with tools to easy approach problem solving or root cause analysis, it is not a book on decision making, it is not statistical, it address the different aspects of the thinking process, as for example Imaging. This needs to be understood. Critical thinking it's not an easy subject so examples need to be very simple. I am a problem solving expert I have studied different methodologies I started with the Rational Executive from Keppner and Tregoe and Apollo methodology, then root cause analysis, incident investigation, 5Ds, 8ds, six thinking hats, Joiner, kaizen, Kaizen Blits and I find this book interesting. The second chapter describes how to find relationships for example patterns, predicting, combining, etc. The chapter on problem solving is kind of weak but the overall book is good. There are few other books on the subject that address this process of critical and creative thinking together.
I am using this book together with Moore's Creative and Critical Thinking.

1 out of 5 stars run...run far, run fast from this book.......2004-05-05

I have NOT read this book, but news of it is making the rounds. As the previous review states, this book gives the solution to the "Birthday Problem" as 435/366. The problem is, no probability can be greater than one. With such a giant mistake (and horrible explanation which develops this number) this is obviously a book to stay away from.

1 out of 5 stars The thinking is sometimes less than critical........1999-06-15

Many aspects of thinking are analyzed. One section emphasizes the importance of knowing what one does not know. This is illustrated by a quiz with some interesting answers: Alaska (not Hawaii) was the last state to join the United States, dinosaurs were probably not egg-laying creatures, and it takes thunder longer to travel two miles (about 10 seconds) than it takes the sun's light to travel to earth (over 8 minutes). It is also shown (page 103) that the probability of two people in a group of thirty having the same birthday is 435/366, a very large ratio indicating "that it is almost certain that two people in any group of thirty will share the same birthday."

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas, great approach to "teaching" art to children.......1999-03-02

Carolyn Holm has made a remarkable contribution in this book, for in it, she not only gives parents and teachers exciting ideas for "everyday" art projects, she also presents a clear and compelling rationale for approaching art with children with an open process. We use this approach in the art studio of Habitot Children's Museum (a hands-on museum for young children in Berkeley). We see many parents who mean well, but who actually interfere in un-helpful ways with their their children's art-making. This book is great for any parent or teacher who wants to see their children become truly creative and have high self-esteem. I recommend it highly! Gina Moreland, Director, Habitot Children's Museum

I am a clown and visual artist. I found this book has positivly influced my work in both areas. It has opened me up to being more creative and to being more effective with my creativity. This book is written for the variety artist but my wife who is a software engineer and a project manager has been able to use a number of the techniques and ideas found in here to help her do her job better.
I recommend this book for anyone interested in being more creative in any field. If you keep an open mind and read between the lines a little you can find a wealth of useful information.

                  Book Description

Newly revised and updated, The Rise of Modern Business compares and analyzes the development of business and business institutions in Great Britain, the United States, Japan, and, to a lesser extent, Germany from the preindustrial era to the present, with emphasis on the twentieth century. Because the evolution of business has been profoundly influenced by its environment, this study pays close attention to connections between business development and political, social, and cultural changes. It also offers an insightful argument on similarities and differences in global business development: the similarities result from the technological and economic imperatives of industrialization, and the differences result from the decisive influence of the national environments—laws, politics, social norms, and culture—within which businesses operate.

This edition of The Rise of Modern Business further highlights the diversity and complexity of business developments by examining both manufacturing and nonmanufacturing firms, exploring the development of small firms in addition to big businesses, and weighing the importance of labor and government for business development in all four nations discussed.

                    Book Description

In this meticulously researched study, Sheldon Garon examines the evolution of Japan's governmental policies toward labor from the late nineteenth century to the present day, and he substantially revises prevailing views which depict relations between the Japanese state and labor simply in terms of suppression and mutual antagonism.

                      Book Description

This publication commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty and the Treaty of Peace with Japan is timely, relevant, and edifying. To quote the editors, Akira Iriye and Robert A. Wampler, it "affords a good opportunity to reflect on problems as well as achievements, on continuities as well as change, in postwar U.S.-Japanese relations." It also encapsulates the vicissitudes of a remarkable, and enduring, bilateral relationship, which former American ambassador to Japan Mike Mansfield called "the most important--bar none."

The pivotal part played by the individual American ambassadors in shaping--and at times smoothing--the Pacific partnership is specifically addressed in this collection of fourteen essays by prominent American scholars. They examine the past, present, and future of the U.S.-Japanese relationship in the context of the partnership's interrelated aspects--political, strategic, economic, and cultural. In so doing, they confirm the contribution of the peace treaties to regional stability in Asia, at the same time indicating the areas where that stability could be threatened, especially in the economic realm, with bitter trade disputes almost upsetting the fragile alliance in the 1980s. That was when many Americans began to see Japan's economic advance as a challenge to U.S. postwar supremacy.

Are these perceptions shaped by history or are they molded by the cultural backgrounds of the two countries? Such questions are highlighted in the animated accounts on the role the mass media play in how each nation views the other. However, despite the frequent clashes and bouts of turbulence, "the two peoples ... from divergent cultural backgrounds ... have somehow learned to live together, even to appreciate one another," concludes one author.

No one looking ahead in 1951 could have predicted the remarkable turn of events of the next five decades or imagined the benefits both parties have reaped from the alliance. The essays in this volume brilliantly underscore the importance of the U.S.-Japan relationship and provide a clear understanding of the priorities of the two nations as they stand on the threshold of a new century.
