There is nothing as gratifying as a publisher who updates its materials and improves the presentation and accessibility of an already excellent volume. This is the case with the handbook Doing Business with Germany that appeared in 1997 and is now freshly minted to capture current economic, political and social developments.

Produced in association with the German-British Chamber of Industry and Commerce, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Eversheds legal services, the book is an anthology of expertise with close to thirty contributors each focusing on every relevant dimension of economy, business practice and development along with financial, taxation and legal issues.

Not least among these is an excellent chapter on German business culture by Eric Lynn of LCT Consultants in Nürnberg. Lynn has provided readers who would work with or in Germany or would prepare others to do so with an excellent snapshot of German values and how they play out in everyday business behavior. He examines and advises on how to communicate, negotiate, create teamwork, exercise authority and shepherd decisions into action. Particularly useful is a section on hidden differences, those unseen factors that can sabotage our communication, moods and timing, and which are almost impossible to catch without our being forewarned with tips such Lynn provides.

The book closes with well-presented and useful appendices that provide information on economic incentives, business agencies both public and private, according to the category of services that they provide as well as contact information for German Chambers of Industry and Commerce worldwide. Finally full contact information including websites and email coordinates is provided about the contributors. The book contains a copious index.

Overall Doing Business with Germany moves nicely between the bigger picture and the useful details and is full of hard facts. Given its sponsorship, authorship and focus it is obviously bullish on business and pays less attention than some might expect on such issues as unemployment, particularly in the new German Länder to the East, and to the social costs except as these are involved in personnel management and union negotiations. In an age in which fast changing information is more likely to be sought online, Kogan Page has nonetheless given us an extremely useful book.

Another in the fantastic Thomas Black series. Well written at a lively pace. Anyone who is not already hooked on Emerson's detective will be after this book.

Nervous Laughter.......2001-02-07

Nervous Laughter is the third novel in Emerson's Thomas Black series, set in Seattle. Black is asked to follow Mark Daniels to find out if he is having an affair. When Black finds the lovers, they are dead, both Daniels and his teenage lover, Bea Hindenburg. The police rule it a murder-suicide, but Daniels' widow doesn't think so. Black finds quite a few suspects along the way in solving this case. Earl Emerson is one of the finest writers of mysteries today, and Nervous Laughter is one of the best of the series.

A Good Read.......2000-03-26

Mr. Darell Y. Hamamoto wrote a review that Mr. Black had copped the title from one of his book. The funny thing is that Mr. Emerson's book was written in 1986 and Mr. Hamamoto's was written in 1989. Seems like Mr. Hamamoto should make an apology to Mr.Emerson rather than the other way around. This a fine addition to the Thomas Black series.

Excellent, as always.......2000-03-26

When I started to look at Emerson's reviews, I was startled that "Nervous Laughter" only got a "2 star" ranking. One reviewer obviously had something else in mind and probably didn't read the entire book. PI Thomas Black is following a rich man who is suspected of cheating on his wife. As he stakes out the site of the supposed tryst, he discovers that the rich man and his teenage lover are dead. Black must find out if it's murder or suicide. Earl Emerson is one of the best mystery writers working today. He paints a perfect picture of Seattle, and his 2 main characters, Thomas Black and Kathy Birchfield, are 2 of the most likeable characters in the mystery genre.

This was a nice book in the Thomas Black style. Nothing was a big shock. The story emerged with good pacing, wasn't totally predictable. I enjoyed it.

An uplifting and informative journey of a loving daughter caring for her mother with Alzheimers.......2005-08-26

This book is fascinating reading, and very inspirational for anyone who desires to make the most of the time remaining with their loved one with Alzheimers. This is not a "Stage of Alzheimers" primer, but a fascinating memoir of a daughter caring for her mother with Alzheimers. Elinor Fuchs' story is unique because she finds ways to turn the difficulties of her mother's Alzheimers into opportunities for love, care, and family healing.

Elinor Fuchs, a professor of drama at Yale University, seems so comfortable in her mother's fractured world, and finds the laughter within always. One very poignant moment occurs when the author is trying to determine whether her mother would rather return to her home of 30 years, or stay in an assisted living facility. Her mother responds: "Why go back in life when you can go forward."

This book will bring tears, laughter, and wisdom to those who take the time to savor it.

Elinor Fuchs writes of navigating the long-distance caregiver role, first with the help of part-time paid caregivers and then live-in caregivers. Care eventually moves to an assisted living facility and finally a nursing home. Fuchs marks each transition with mixed feelings over meeting her mother's dependency needs while trying to preserve her independence. Fortunately, her loving uncle was available to make decisions with her until his own death. Fuchs' intelligence, good humor, and compassion enable her to enjoy her mother in spite of her limitations. She begins to reframe the meaning of her mother's fractured language: "I see Lil not only as a `patient' and `sick.' But as an artist, spinning poetry of a private world, and I began to carry a little tape recorder to catch these exchanges." As a result, each chapter of the book begins with an excerpt that reveals their playful, wacky, and sometimes profound conversations. This memoir is filled with funny anecdotes that show how her mother retained her essential self well throughout the disease.

This book is a joy to read. More than a narrative about aging and loss, it is a story of love's triumph. "The last ten years," writes Fuchs, "they were our best." If only more family caregivers in the midst of such adversity could grasp such an unexpected gift.

A treat and a tonic..........2005-04-11

This is a wonderful book. It's about a downer subject-Alzheimer's---but manages to be funny, inspiring, hopeful and informative about the process of AD. Other reviewers are right---it is a page turner.
So what an achievement---an upbeat, engrossing book about a human tragedy. I've read a lot of first person accounts about the dementia of a relative and this is the best. It should become a classic. And now the author Fuchs, who teaches at the Yale School of Drama, should make a play of this.

outstanding.......2005-04-05

Laughter is the key to surviving a mother with Altzheimers. This story is so full of laughter and love that it eases the pain of the adventure, maybe not while its going on, but certainly after the "exit." It's a non-stop read at any stage of the experience even if you got along with your mother just fine.
