Este es uno de esos textos interesantes, inteligentes y de acceso.
Vale la pena el esfuerzo que riquieren algunos pasajes. Es un excelente trabajo, que como casi todo lo de P. Krugman, resulta altamente redituable.

        Book Description

Major events such as the Asian crisis in 1997, the Russian default on short-term debt in 1998, the downfall of the hedge fund long-term capital management in 1998 and the disruption in payment systems following the World Trade Center attack in 2001, all resulted in increased management’s attention to liquidity risk.

Banks have realized that adequate systems and processes for identifying, measuring, monitoring and controlling liquidity risks help them to maintain a strong liquidity position, which in turn will increase the confidence of investors and rating agencies as well as improve funding costs and availability.

Liquidity Risk Measurement and Management: A Practitioner’s Guide to Global Best Practices provides the best practices in tools and techniques for bank liquidity risk measurement and management. Experienced bankers and highly regarded liquidity risk experts share their insights and practical experiences in this book.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must read for bankers and non-bankers alike.......2006-12-10

Mr. Matz and Mr. Neu provide insights into liquidity planning and management that are of value to bankers and non-bankers alike. While there is sufficient theory to intrigue the conceptual crowd, the book excels at providing "real world" examples and solutions. Non-bankers should strongly consider this book as well:
        * bank "best practices" can be adapted and/or adopted for other financial institutions, as well as general corporates
        * bank liquidity and illiquidity influences the broader economy.

If you only read one liquidity book in the marketplace, this is the one.

Strategies and advice on balancing financial risk for leveraged companies
In today's highly leveraged economy, good liabilities management has become vitally important. Entire sectors of the economy, and some of the biggest financial and industrial companies, face dramatic overexposure problems. But adequate internal liability controls can greatly reduce risk. Featuring case studies in a number of industries and examples of both proper and improper liabilities management in major organizations, Liabilities, Liquidity, and Cash Management shows managers, accountants, investment advisors, and other professionals who deal with liabilities and overexposure how they can implement good internal controls on liability and overexposure. It provides modern tools, critical strategies, and timely advice specifically tailored to the needs of companies facing overexposure and debt risk in a volatile economy.

            Book Description

This cutting-edge volume brings together a range of leading academics and market practitioners to help you define, understand and measure liquidity risk and "liquidity black holes".

Fully explains "liquidity black holes" as episodes where, across markets where liquidity is normally healthy, buyers disappear, and price declines do not help to bring them back - such as in the "Long Term Capital Management crisis".

Presents evidence that smaller liquidity holes are appearing more routinely in a range of markets.

Specifically written in order to help practitioners and policy makers identify and thus avoid markets prone to damaging liquidity black holes.

Additionally covers trends and issues in market liquidity, liquidity risk and disclosing positions, liquidity public policy, liquidity in relation to credit and currency markets, and many other issues.

              Book Description

Liquidity risk is the risk of loss arising from an inability to quickly realize asset value or obtain funding and can be damaging if not properly considered or actively managed. Lack of liquidity can lead to large losses in asset/liability portfolios and off balance sheet activities and in extreme cases can trigger financial distress and insolvency. Liquidity Risk is a comprehensive treatment of the topic focusing on the nature of the risk, problems that arise in asset and funding liquidity and mechanisms that can be developed to monitor, measure and control such risks.

From the author: Fuzzy discounted cash flow (DCF) techniques have been used to cope with the problems encountered by the deterministic or probabilistic evaluation of the investment alternatives. However, especially when a superior alternative cannot be spotted as a result of the DCF analysis, these techniques require a supplement such as the payback method or the duration analysis to assess liquidity risk. In this paper, I present fuzzy analogues of the payback method (conventional and discounted), which is a frequently used measure of liquidity risk in capital budgeting. Next, for investment projects, I propose a fuzzy economic evaluation criterion based on the duration measure, which incorporates liquidity risk in capital investment while overcoming the obvious shortcomings of the payback method. Then, via a numerical example, I illustrate how to use the fuzzy payback method and fuzzy duration analysis as secondary decision criteria to rank investment alternatives, for which preference cannot be expressed in terms of fuzzy present worths.

                          Book Description

This well-respected book balances theory and processes with skill development. The authors are active researchers, lecturers, and communication consultants. They draw on their experiences to provide readers with a clear introduction to the study of small group communication. Communication in Small Groups puts theory and research into practice. A primary objective is to discuss small group communication theory and research in a way that allows the reader to apply concepts and principles to the process of communication when working as a member of a team.

                          4 out of 5 stars A Solid Introductionand Overview.......2001-08-06

I have used this textbook to teach Introduction to Small Group Communication for 10 years. It is a solid overview of key communication concepts, processes and skills in small group communication. I would disagree with the review written by dharting. The average undergraduate has no difficulty reading this book. It may not be in dharting's Top 10,000, but I suspect the bulk of this list is comic books.

1 out of 5 stars Not on my top 10,000 list.......2001-06-11

This book starts well, and it's obvious that the authors had the initial intention of making this material accessible to the average student. Of the book's 11 chapters, the first several are easy to read; there are "case studies" following the first 10 chapters which illustrate ideas, generate questions, and give students some material to evaluate. Unfortunately, things take a downward turn toward the middle of the book, plummeting into a death spiral in the last few chapters. It felt as if the authors either got tired of translating complex ideas into easy-to-read language or simply ran out of time. The last few chapters are an uphill slog through heavy jargon - just when you're trying to gear up for the final exam.

From the beginning, they relied too heavily on lists, lists and more lists. There were over 100 "core communication skills" of various types strewn about in parcels of up to 20 at a time, and there was no master list to refer to. There are numerous additional lists (the 4 signs of this, the 8 kinds of that, etc.) which a teacher can plunder for exam material - much to the student's grief. Nowhere is there a list of the 14 ways to mutilate a textbook - I'll just have to experiment.

As for the writing style, it varies from friendly and chock full of real-life analogies to passages like this example from Chapter 11: "Differences in the characteristics of individuals are also a class of variables that complicate a unified communication-based theoretical explanation of group output (Gouran and Fisher 1984). Here, we again define the term individual rather expansively to include any demographic (e.g., gender, age, race), psychographic (e.g., belief, attitude, ego involvement), or sociographic (e.g., student, Mason, argumentative) factor that may impact group outcome." Yes, it's readable on the second or third try, but the chapter goes on and on.

If this is the required text for a Small Group Communication course you're planning to attend, you might want to take another look at your schedule.

This new 7th Edition of New Venture Creation: Entrepreneurship for the 21st Century, is the most heavily revised edition since its existence, yet it still maintains the market defining "Timmons Model of the Entrepreneurial Process." As always, Timmons & Spinelli cover the process of getting a new venture started, growing the venture, and successfully harvesting it. Through text, case studies, and hands-on exercises, this how-to text guides students in discovering the concepts of entrepreneurship and the competencies, skills, tools, and experience to equip students to successfully launch a new venture and recognize entrepreneurial opportunities. The authors recognize that there is no substitute for actually starting a company, but believe that it is possible to expose students to many of the vital issues and immerse them in key learning experiences.

The idea of the Online Learning center is a great one, but there could be a lot more resources added. Currently, you are allowed to read the chapter summary & see typical questions for each chapter online. There are also several links to articles relating to the topic. The links are fairly old, however.

5 out of 5 stars It's an Excellent Time for New Ventures.......2006-06-30

If you look around at the big businesses of today, most of them weren't around a hundred years ago. This includes not only the really new companies like Microsoft and Intel, but also the oil companies, automobile companies, airlines and more.

A hundred years from now it will be the same thing. The days of cheap energy are over, global warming is coming, and the recent developments in biotechnology are opening new doors. In the next century there will be an awful lot of room for new companies that work in such areas to solve tomorrow's problems. And often the big companies of today can't make the transition.

This book is sort of the general overall Bible of starting a new company. It is intended for use by individuals and by business school students thinking of starting a company.

It begins with a look at the entrepreneurial mind. This examines the the attitudes, habits and behaviors seen in successful entrepreneurs. It continues through every step in the process until you've cashed out and are looking for ways to spend your fortune.

Having worked for several entrepreneurs and see what happens, this book would have saved some of them an awful lot of effort.

2 out of 5 stars Earlier versions are better.......2004-04-28

This book includes numerous tear-out exercises and cases. It might be appropriate for a classroom but it is not ideal for prospective entrepreneurs.

Earlier versions of this book had good material on writing a business plan and determining appropriate sources of capital and less extraneous fillers. Save yourself a lot of money and buy a more practical book on the subject or the 1995 version if you want the business plan and financing materials.

Like the previous reviewer, I too purchased the 4th Edition of this text (paperback), and was extremely pleased. Before starting my current business, I consulted extensively with this text, and was pleased with its comprehensive, practical nature - covering everything from a personality assessment of one's readiness for self-employment, to exhaustive preparation information for a business plan. The book also extensively covers financing an entrepreneurial venture, comparing both debt and equity (including Venture Capital) methodologies.

On a practical note, I also like the fact that all the pages are perforated...there have been several that I have taken out and used hands-on!

I cannot comment on the relative worth of this version vs. the newer version, as I only have the 4th edition.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful resource but not a guidebook.......2000-08-10

New Venture Creation is insightful, well-crafted, and content-rich. It's no surprise that MBAs swear by this hugely popular business school classic.

However, as a serial entrepreneur, I have mixed feelings about the actual utility of Timmon's textbook. On one hand, it presents a fairly accurate description of the entrepreneurial process. Timmon's commentary covers: recognizing an opportunity... to sizing the market... to securing risk capital... to ultimately harvesting the venture. Timmon's also addresses the critical risks and challenges that entrepreneurs face along the way.

So to be clear, New Venture Creation is definitely more useful than all those "How to Write a Business Plan" books.

On the other hand, none of Timmon's text was particularly meaningful to me until I had started my _second_ venture. Put another way, New Venture Creation (by itself) is not instructional. It lacks sufficient case study, testimonial, and all those great "war stories."

Therefore, New Venture Creation is a helpful resource but not a practical guidebook.

                              5 out of 5 stars An Entrepreneur's "Must Have".......1999-11-18

This is *the* book for entrepreneurs, covering everything from evaluating new business ideas to writing complete business plans. This book is well-written and informative, and it combines solid examples with detailed exercises. I was first exposed to this book in an Entrepreneurship class at the University of Maryland, and I've used it several times since. (Thank you, Dr. Bob Baum.)

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of entrepreneurship.......1999-10-21

Absolutely imperative for any entrepreneur looking to start a high potential business. Buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for every entrepreneur.......1998-07-15

If you want to start a business, any kind of business, then read this book. The case studies give the entreprenuer an understanding of the kind of stress and decision making that he or she may be faced with in the future. Furthermore, examples of outstanding business plans are provided. An easy five stars

4 out of 5 stars a Harvard Business School style textbook on entrepreneurship.......1997-11-20

Here is what a leading business school teaches on entrepreneurship. Overall, the book is very well balanced in its coverage of principles and analysis of real world cases. With its size (800 pages of letter size), it contains information (such as sample term sheet, agreements, RMA statement studies) which are hard to find in other books. It is obvious that it couldn't be written without many years of teaching, research and practice.
