concise resource.......2006-08-15
When you're ten years out of school, and you still reach for a book you used in college, you know its valuable. I reach for Bube as a refresher very frequently. Its not flowery, but it has just enough figures and just enough math and explanation to cover most electronic phenomena. Photoemission, field emission, photoelectric effects, schottky barriers, etc. are covered well enough so that you can tackle a calculation of a particular phenomenon when necessary.
A great introductory, "big picture" book.......1999-04-12
This book is a good place to go for explanations when you get lost in the muck of proofs. If you expect it to be rigorous, of course you will be disappointed. The synopses say it is for people who have never been through these topics before. This book is invaluable when you are going through notes and derivations and forget what the heck assumptions were made and what you're trying to get to. The beauty of it is that it isn't weighed down by too much information. It gives a good overview of exactly what it says: Electrons in Solids.
stay away.......1998-06-22
A pretty crummy book for the price. It's pretty short, the explanations aren't very good, and I don't particularly like the chosen topics either. You'd be better off with Kittel, and Kittel is a terrible book. I've read this, Kittel, Omar, Ashcroft+Mermin, and Burns, and this is the worst. It doesn't tell you enough to build a foundation for anything and I didn't find a single person in my class of 12 or so who liked this book. How bad is this book? I had to write my own table of physical constants on the inside cover because this book doesn't have them. I'd buy Omar instead, followed by Kittel, followed by anything else but Bube.

Book Description
The MOCVD Challenge: Volume 2, A Survey of GaInAsP-GaAs for Photonic and Electronic Device Applications focuses on GaAs systems and devices grown by MOCVD, specifically MOCVD growth of GaAs and related alloys and GaInP for photonic and electronic applications. Along with Volume 1, this book provides a personal account of the author's own pioneering research, an authoritative overview of the development of the MOCVD technique, and the technique's impact on the development of new materials, devices, and their applications. Coverage begins with an introduction to III-V compounds and devices and growth techniques for multilayers and heterostructures. The book then details how an MOCVD system works and how design affects material growth and sourcing of precursor materials. It also examines ^Iin- and ^Iex-situ growth techniques, with the differential reflectivity treatment applied to lattice matched and mis-matched conditions. The author gives an in-depth treatment of the GaInPGaAs system, including optical investigations of quantum wells and superlattices. The book concludes with an up-to-date discussion of the current use, novel developments, and future potential for optical devices, GaAs-based lasers and heterojunctions, and optoelectronic integrated circuits. The MOCVD Challenge is an invaluable introduction and guide for researchers in materials science, applied physics, and electrical engineering, who study the properties and applications of compound (III-V) semiconductor materials. Professor Manijeh Razeghi is director of the Center for Quantum Devices at Northwestern University and leads an internationally renowned research team exploring the use of the MOCVD growth technique. Formerly head of research at Thomson-CSF in France, she was awarded the IBM Europe Science and Technology Prize for her early research into MOCVD.

My Review.......1999-09-03
I like the way this book try to explain in easy to understand way, so I don't have to give full concentration to understand it, like other books. I recommend this book to those who have lack knowledge about electric physics and electric circuit, and this book is very good for those who are new / freshman in Electrical Engineering course.
Book Description
The book summarizes the results of an international research project - the first Europe-wide Delphi study on future developments in the energy sector (EurEnDel). With a time horizon of 2030, this expert survey not only provides a useful perspective on long-term developments of energy technologies, but also evaluates these technologies against different sets of social values or "visions".
Close to 700 energy experts from 48 countries participated in this two-round, web-based Delphi exercise. Thus the results represent a broad European perspective on the challenges that Europe’s energy system will be facing over the next two and a half decades. In the survey and in the analysis of the results, equal emphasis was placed on the technology-push perspective "What will the future be like?" and the normative social-pull perspective "What should the future be like?". In this respect, considerable attention was given to the different responses received from technology experts, generalists and decision makers.
The results of the Delphi study were interpreted on the background of three qualitative scenarios of Europe’s energy futures up to the year 2030. In a world of uncertainties, EurEnDel recognized the impracticality of referring to a single energy scenario. For this reason it adapted the classical Delphi approach, employing a variety of foresight approaches both in the design phase and in the later analysis of the results
The survey covers 20 emerging technologies from all parts of the energy system ranging from energy supply, grid and storage issues, and energy demand for transportation, housing and industry. The covered key technologies were assessed in terms of time horizons of development, their potential impact and the means which are needed to support their development.

Labor Relations in a Small "Box" (4.5*s).......2005-05-16
This book examines labor relations during WWII, especially the role of the War Labor Board, for their impact on work in the post-War era. There is not much of the history of the labor movement prior to WWII, with the obvious exception of the Wagner Act, the principal defining legislation of the right to be represented by labor organizations, and brief references to WWI labor relations and the Norris-LaGuardia Act. Though mostly completed by the early 90s, it is interesting that the precipitous decline of unions is hardly mentioned in this book. The author is more concerned with the changed nature of unions and the shift in focus to wages and benefits from shop floor conditions and control.
The curtailment of strikes was the foremost concern of governmental bodies that were coordinating wartime efforts, not to mention the constant drumbeat from the business community. After unsatisfactory efforts by other agencies, the WLB, created by executive order, was given the responsibility and power to set labor policy in the United States. Though it may be counterintuitive, the WLB looked to centralized, bureaucratic unions to curtail worker unrest on the shop floor, especially wild cat strikes. The WLB promoted the inclusion of grievance-arbitration clauses in labor contracts as a substitute for rights to strike, though that right was fundamental in the Wagner Act. Under those clauses, the only recourse for workers dissatisfied with managerial actions is to file a grievance (complaint) with no withholding of work permitted while the legal process unfolds under the control of union and management bureaucracies. Union members were not allowed to quit unions (other than during narrow, one-time windows) and union dues were regularly deducted. Thereby, union leaders were less reluctant to enforce contract provisions on recalcitrant employees. In addition, the WLB disallowed managerial prerogatives from being bargained. In other words, businesses could run their firms as they saw fit with only issues of wages, benefits, and job conditions subject to negotiation.
In the post-WWII era, the NLRB and the court system generally reinforced and extended virtually all of the policies and decisions of the WLB. Labor unrest was a discredited idea. Labor "peace" fit nicely into the view of "pluralistic" thinkers that society consisted of competing, though essentially equal, interest groups with similar interests, differing only at the margins. Furthermore, labor relations were legitimized under a "rule of law," that is, a contract (constitution) with a dispute settling system. Workplace regimes could even be regarded as democratic, with the legal system of the workplace paralleling that of the broader society. Everyone is equal before the law, even employer and employee.
However, the author is critical of this labor accord. In actuality, grievance systems were largely overburdened, misused, and generally insufficient. In the first place, only contract issues could be grieved. Many of the concerns of workers over the nature of work and workplace control never made it into contracts. There was a good deal of worker unrest and dissatisfaction, perhaps peaking in the late 60s and early 70s, that could only be voiced through spontaneous worker actions. In other words, the accord really did not work. Containment of workers trumped worker empowerment and justice.
It has taken several decades for the flawed nature of the labor regime rooted in WWII labor policies to be fully realized. A legal process that papers over or ignores fundamental issues or relationships is destined for failure. Employment in the US is in the midst of vast changes, mostly initiated by employers and detrimental to working people. The failure of labor contracts to fully address workplace situations and relationships is a key part of the decline of the standing of working people.
The author is not inclined to make much in the way of recommendations. But it is important to understand the "box" into which labor organizations have been placed to understand their ineffectualness. The state of working people involves much more than an inadequate labor relations regime. One needs to look at the dominance of corporations over society via such mechanisms as the mass media and educational systems, as well as control of the political process. Given that kind of social and political control, there is no chance that labor relations will be adjusted to address most workplace issues and elevate the standing of working people.

Book Description
Here is the perfect pairing of subjects-the ever-mysterious cat and the spiritual philosophy of life embodied by the principles of Zen. How often have we seen cats watching us with intense focus, playing obsessively with a toy, comforting us as they cannily assess our moods, lying calmly in a patch of sunlight? Cats exemplify the essential tenets of Zen philosophy and the desire to find the simple and spiritual in everyday life. They embody utter grace, non-judgmental devotion, and a sense of spontaneous whimsy. What's more, as we interact with cats, these qualities come out in us. Zen Cat pairs 50 charming black-and-white photographs of cats with simple and inspiring quotes from a variety of sources. This ingenious coupling of concepts is a reminder of how much we have to learn from these very special relationships with our feline friends.

Zen Cat.......2007-01-28
I bought this book for my brother in law because he had a cat that would come and sit with him every day but would not let him touch it. He fed it and seldom talked to it but they would both sit quitly and enjoy the outdoors. He got a real kick out of the small book with all the cute pictures.
to support the effort to stay calm, collected and composed.......2005-07-07
There are quotations of wise words of the Dalai Lama and Buddha, of american authors like H.L. Mencken or Henry David Thoreau, but also of european writers like Montaigne, Voltaire, Sartre (France) or Goethe, Wittgenstein (Germany), of Italo Calvino, Leonardo da Vinci, Cesare Pavese (Italy). You can see in this tiny book CATS: resting in paper-bags, or others, making stripes on their fur coat, standing behind window shades. In the introduction the publishing author Judith Adler (a New York "communicator, marketing muse, business intuitive, and soul coach, she helps individuals and companies realize their dreams by creating success from the only place that lasts: the INSIDE OUT") - Judith Adler for example describes, how her cat followed "the graceful dance of light upon the walls" of her bedroom. This was a help to the author, finding her "own inner feline", that field of emotional ressources, which is able to make a correspondance to the typical feline, ZEN-alike capability being "focused, present, sitting stiller than a statue, meditating". If "we act with cats, these qualities are reflected back in us". It is not needful, to search poetical-pious metaphorical words, like a friend of the author did, saying: "Cats are bridges between heaven and earth, ... furry little ambassadors from beyond." Those people, who don't believe in such things, may prefer to formulate with a certain sense of humour, talking about "CAT-ALYSTS": A cat is a cat-alyzer making transpositions of far-east wisdom. On one of these pages you can find a prayer-like T.S. Eliot-quotation: "Teach us to care and not to care. Teach us to sit still." It has been no problem to the trustworthy-stylish black-and-white-photographer Paul Coughlin (who also published - among other books - "Timeless New York: A Literary and Photographic Tribute") - no problem to combine these aphorisms with congenial pictures: One cat, sitting near Washington Square (the publishers are making thankful acknowledgments to the Washington Square Animal Hospital doctors Ann Lucas and Dr. Kristin Kuscher and so on) - one cat is sitting on the entrance-stair of a café. Next to it Judith Adler wrote: "Cats don't belong to people. They belong to places." Well, the place of this book is immutable on my writing-desk - in order to support my daily effort to stay calm, collected and composed

Meow in the Now.......2004-02-21
Not a cat book per se. It is Zen through example. Deceptively simple (of course).
I laughed out loud several times in a Starbucks while reading it.
The pairing of photos and aphorisms is wonderful, some of which I still have yet to truly appreciate, I think.
Wonderful Zen quotes and magnificent photographs.......2003-12-11
I am not a cat lover, I must admit from the outset...but the photos and text of ZEN CAT are superb...I found the text meaningful and profound (a rarity in pet books, you may be sure)and highly recommend this little book to (a)all cat lovers, (b)all zen enthusiasts, (c)all lovers of fine photography, and (d) anyone looking for a "nice little gift".
Paul Coughlin is a really fine photographer, and Judith Adler writes clearly and with a deep sense of understanding of her subject...I BOUGHT THE BOOK FOR MYSELF, BUT AM BUYING MORE FOR GIGFS, You may decide to do the same after you read it.

The Zen of no Zen.......2005-01-24
This is really a very cute book about Cats from the concept of Zen! Some points in the book, although amusing, is also thought provoking. The illustrations are very cute and the book offers certain insights which I found to be really true with my little kitty boy!
This is in fact, a small little “sayings” book, so don’t expect it to be a full or complete book about cats. But if you’re looking for something to complement or enhance your reading of cats, get this! It’ll surely provide you with hours (or minutes) of reading joy and “knowing” smiles. ^_~
The only minus point I could think of this book is that it’s too short! I finished reading it in a few minutes, but I wished it was longer because it’s just so entertaining and refreshing! Also recommended as gifts to your cat-lover friends!
makes you smile!.......2001-11-27
I enjoy having this book around, lots of cute pics to make you smile :)
I LOVED this book!.......2000-12-03
This book is so cute! It really reflects the personalities of my cats! My cats are Zen Master Cats, especially Shingu no Jagaimo (Futon Potato). I love this book, if you're a cat lover, or you just need a short, good read, this book is definetely for you!
Cute.......2000-09-06
This book was quite cute, however, I expected a little more out of it. It's one of those books thay you can read in 10 or 15 minutes - not worth the money unless you're getting it as a gift or you just have money to burn. Pick it up in the library or just read it in Borders.
Beard captures both the essence of Zen and Cat perfectly!.......1999-03-30
The illustrations are wonderful and the humor is witty. Henry Beard captures both the essence of Zen and Cat perfectly in this book.
I "accidentally" bought a copy of this book while on vacation. After reading it I just had to buy two additional copies to give to relatives as gifts when I returned home.

Book Description
Teachings of the Cat Zen Masters, by Sheryll Dahlke, is a collection of quotes by famous cats, such as T. Furball, Oscar Wildecat, and many others. Felix Waldo Emerson, for instance, says: "There is a cat-like quality in everything God has made." In these pithy sayings, cats live totally in the moment with full awareness. Like a contradiction, they study the Self to forget the Self. They are centered in balance and in time, completely within the activity of the moment--whether playing with a stone or a butterfly. "This little book is a joyous read. You will be given the powerful, loving freedom for you to be yourself."--Juanita "Catastrophe" Tobin, Poet--Blowing Rock, NC. "The enlightened cat is a beautiful thing. We humans can learn a few things from Teachings of the Cat Zen Masters. Enjoy!"--Rita Bayron, Faithful Feline Follower--Coppell, TX.

Book Description
The embodiment of Zen--independent, serene, enlightened--these cats inhabit the temples, shrines, gardens, and parks of Japan. Photographer Yoshiyuki Yaginuma has captured these free spirits in many poses, from meditating in a garden and baring fangs in a hunting stance to frolicking with the family, perching on statues, and curling in repose.
In Japan cats have always occupied a special place: the eternal symbol of good luck is a white cat with its paw raised, and ancient screens from centuries past are often graced with a cat. And in the rarified world of Buddhist and Shinto temples, cats have been welcomed for practical reasons. Since the monks eat rice and so do mice, there's more rice for the monks with cats regulating the population.
Fascinated by these Zen cats, Yaginuma regularly visits temples and other places where they reside, and he feels that the cats wait to greet him and his camera. Jana Martin's intriguing commentary discuss the cat in Japanese myth, folklore, and in Zen writings. She pairs the irresistible feline portraits with poems by generations of Zen disciples and monks, who do not assign any human quality to them but praise them for what they are. How perfectly Zenlike after all!
