                      Book Description

Powerful global trends demand a wholesale rethinking of the system of international development assistance. A key issue is the future of concessional aid provided by multilateral development banks. What should be the future role of MDB concessional aid? And what is needed to maintain donor countries' support?

In a rapidly changing global environment there is still a strong case for maintaining MDB concessional aid. But that case only holds provided a new approach is taken which adapts the roles of MDB aid to development lessons of the recent past and changing global conditions -- and does so in a way that improves aid's effectiveness.

This study argues that without these conditions, continued donor country support cannot and should not be expected. The study lays out a new framework for future decision-making in MDB funding, based on: (1) a new performance-based approach to aid allocations among countries; (2) an expansion of MDB investments in regional and global problem solving; (3) the resolution of specific operational issues that stand in the way of greater effectiveness in delivery of aid; and (4) changes in the burden-sharing and governance arrangements of individual MDBs.

                      Book Description

If You Are A Sales Professional, Don't Read This Book. Live It!

Ever wondered which selling approaches really work? Of course you have. But if you're like many salespeople you've never considered the obvious: asking the buyer what he or she wants. Buyer-Approved Selling - the inaugural title in the Approved Series of business books - does it for you.

Like the rest of the Approved Series, Buyer-Approved Selling is research based. The Marketshare Research Institute team asked purchasing professionals from 228 companies across America what gets them to buy - and what makes them (silently) say "No way." The results, documented in no-nonsense, bite-sized practical tips, read like a "sales trip" through the buyer's mind. Start living these tips now. After all, who better to tell you how to sell than the very people you sell to?

                      Buyer-Approved Selling: read today…use tomorrow.

5 out of 5 stars The Art & Science of Understanding the Buyer's Perspective.......2005-01-15

Schell's approach is unique in that he focuses almost entirely on the sales process (both cultivation and solicitation) from "the buyer's side of the desk." He organizes his material in a series of eight parts. In each, he offers specific tips which, for those with extensive sales experience and sustained success, may seem obvious. While many of his suggestions are obvious, such as organizing your prospect database or developing an Industry-Specific Positioning Statement (ISPS), the fact remains that his tips offer substantial value if only as reminders. Everyone in sales encounters a period of failure when they begin to question what they are doing wrong. Reviewing Schell's key points will reveal what they have taken for granted, ignored, neglected or bungled.

In addition, Schell includes dozens of comments from 228 buyers who agreed to 330 interviews and provided responses to 4,327 questions. In one of the most interesting chapters entitled, "How to annoy buyers-guaranteed," respondents warrant the guarantee. They confirm that the most successful salespeople know which questions to ask of both prospects and customers. They spend at least 80% of the time listening to the buyer's responses. He also includes a Planning Guide with each chapter using a "Permission-Based Model." This book is both a manual and a workbook, one whose material each reader should modify to accommodate her or his specific needs, interests, goals, and circumstances.

Here's a suggestion: Select ten to fifteen customers and schedule a meeting with each. Ask two questions. "What do you like best about doing business with me? and "What more can I do to be of greater service to you and to your company?" The responses may surprise you. You may also be surprised by how eager the buyers are to respond. Why? In all probability, they are seldom asked those two questions. What does that reveal about your own customer relationships? Of equal (if not greater) importance, what does that reveal about your competitors? If you now lack a decisive competitive advantage, a frank conversation with several of your customers may well identify one for you.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent look at the field.......2007-07-14

This is a superb look at the nitty-gritty world of selling. Although the author does fill it with case studies, they are all useful and thought-provoking. My favorite bit of advice concerns what happens to all top salespeople: they get their territory cut. Why? To keep them from getting complacent, of course.

5 out of 5 stars succinct and to the point.......2007-06-21

Joe has gone out of his way to cut to the chase. There is no self esteem building and you can do it rah rah rather Joe's frank honest and what it takes to stay on top, remain on top and what to do when you are caught in a no win situation. As an MBA this type of book should be a mandatory read but the reality of tenured professors that are effectively running a union job do not understand how duplicitous and unethically the real business world can be. I finish this book in a few hours and the insight will last me a career. It is also refreshing from the standpoint that Joe has a soul and is interested in seeing the world and some great sales jobs he has had launched that opportunity. If you surf this book is especially cool(which I do and I can relate to the author on many levels.) Another reviewer was turned off by some profanity of which I do not remember so don't focus on issues of crass.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for B-school graduates and MBAs.......2007-02-14

I went to B-School, got my MBA, and gained valuable education on the theory and practice of managing a successful business. What I was disappointed by, were the unexamined assumptions around the "corporate dream", which I found pervasive at all levels of the curriculum. Too complex to go into here, but essentially...

Most business schools are in the business of selling the corporate dream and training future managers in the arts of profit maximization, organizational efficiency, competitive advantage, and market penetration. Rarely do they ever address the human reality of corporate downsizing, except as economic data points relevent to the afore mentioned topics.

The Sales Adventure Guide is a practical manual on how to cut through the corporate BS, understand the true meaning behind management-speak, and know how to cover your butt when your job is on the line, through no fault of your own. It uncovers the tactics, often unethical and sometimes illegal, that HR and upper management will use to make you go away, meekly, without costing the company a penny.

The Sales Adventure Guide will help you probe underneath the company's glossy exterior and public face, by showing you how you can ask the right questions and find out important information about the organization you will be contracting your time to.

This book will teach you how to protect yourself, play the corporate game with finesse, and enjoy your life, rather than feel browbeaten at the company's ingratitude towards the days, months, years of your life you gave them - which you will never, ever get back.

Corporate loyalty is a myth, most companies will lay you off without a second thought. Read this book, understand that we are all contractors now.

5 out of 5 stars Wish this came out when I starting selling for the man........2006-03-21

Anybody. I repeat anybody who sells, or wants to become a sales person, has to read this book. This book will keep you in the "game" longer, by playing corporate business model to your advantage. All successful companies value their sales force. But most Sales Managers make you feel like a zero. By reading this book you can change that number and pave a brighter future. Read and Prosper.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for Sales etc....Good read!!!!.......2006-03-09

This book is a "must have" for the new graduate or anyone who is considering a career or taking on an adventure in sales.

Finally, a fun-to-read book on sales with valuable and positive insights on getting-in, finding the right company, and getting-out when your company becomes the "wrong company."

Joe T has real-life examples and experiences that show you how to work for yourself and enjoy the adventure. He teaches you what to expect in sales and get the most out of your job and keep your sanity. Rather than providing, rehashed "supposedly new", methods of achieving one time sales success, this book provides a "big picture guide" that helps a salesperson's lifelong career. HIGHLY ENTERTAINING AND RECOMMENDED!!!

Ms.Wise starts out by saying, "Thai's practise a form of Buddhism known as Theravada, also called Hinanyana". Hinanyana is a derogatory term meaning: lesser, despicable... The rest of the book is a mish-mash of Asian cultural mores that do not necessarily have anything to do with Thailand. If you need a tax write off for your business, by all means buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Go To Thailand Without This Reading This Book.......2000-05-13

I have visited Thailand many times for both business and pleasure. I didn't read this book until I my fourth visit. It is very important to understand the do's and dont's in Thailand, which many Westerners tend to ignore. It opens the door of understanding for those new to the Thai mentality and way of life. It also has a very small section but good section explaining the influence of Buddism on daily life in Thailand. Definately buy this book if going there. If you are more business oriented I would suggest also reading "Doing Business With Thailand" (Global Business Series).

                      Book Description

Doing business in Thailand is very different from doing business anywhere else in Asia. There are a variety of cultural, religious and historical reasons for this. In addition, Thai law has developed over the centuries with many unique features.

Knowing your products or services, and being a good manager, just isn't enough to be successful in Thailand. It is equally important to accept the fact that business operates at much slower pace and to understand that Thai people tend to mix their professional and private lifedoing business only when friendship and trust have developed between the parties.

The Business Guide to Thailand gives you the inside story on doing business in Thailand.

The Business Guides are aimed at business people requiring an accurate and up-to-date guide to how business is organised and regulated in Asia.

All contributors are experts and specialists in their fields, providing you with an unparalleled wealth of insider knowledge. Each chapter is packed with the kind of information and advice usually available only to elite clients with large budgets for outside consultants.

                      Business Guides aim to cover:

                      · negotiation preparation
                      · marketing and distribution
                      · foreign trade
                      · taxation

                          Book Description

Thailand's GDP totaled US$123 billion in 1999. Compared to some of their neighbors, Thai citizens enjoy a comparatively rich per capita income of US$2,370. In Thailand's largest city, Bangkok, residents enjoy a per capita income of US$6,000 and in this country of abundant food and natural resources, a level of purchasing power parity exceeding that of many countries with higher income levels. According to the World Bank, Thailand is expected to attain its pre-crisis level of output in 2002, and its pre-crisis level of welfare in 2003.

Thailand was the United States' 25 th largest export market in 1999 with US exports totaling more than US$4.9 billion. In the fourth quarter, American exports finally displayed a sustained rebound from the drop resulting from the economic crisis and year-on-year growth exceeded 30 percent in the first quarter of 2000. The U.S. is Thailand's single largest trading partner (ahead of Japan) with 1999 two-way trade of US$19 billion. The U.S. is Thailand's second largest foreign investor (following Japan) with a total accumulated direct investment of over US$15 billion, with half of U.S. investments in the energy and petrochemical industries.

Major investments in Thailand by American and third country firms continue to occur on a regular basis. Sectors with long-term planning horizons, e.g., energy, petrochemicals, automotive, continue to find Thailand an attractive location for investment. For example, General Motors opened a $600 million new vehicle assembly plant in mid-2000, joining Ford and other automotive manufacturers in Thailand, solidifying the country's reputation as the “Detroit of Southeast Asia”. Increasingly, companies investing in Thailand are those requiring skilled but cost-competitive labor. In addition, as Thailand slowly moves ahead with its near to medium term plans to privatize many state-owned enterprises, additional opportunities both for investment as well as sales of equipment should arise in important sectors such as energy, aviation and telecommunications.

In summary, most international companies recognize the long-term potential within Southeast Asia's regional markets. While the economic crisis of 1997-98 forced companies to re-formulate market development strategies, very few American firms decided to withdraw from Thailand. Thailand continues to provide a cost-effective regional manufacturing and distribution hub for the greater Mekong and ASEAN region and every month sees new investment in Thailand to serve the renewed growth in demand among the Southeast Asian economies. American firms hoping to sell into Thai markets can succeed by offering quality, reliability and value in Thailand's increasingly productivity-drive and price-conscious marketplace.
