Book Description
There is a long line, running from antiquity to the present day, which unites all those who believe in an open society. This school of thought bases the demand for liberty on the recognition of human ignorance; we need to be free because we are ignorant and fallible. Ignorance and Liberty examines how the market is a place which liberates us from this idea of a priviledged source of knowledge. The market is not only a place where goods are exchanged but also where different philosophical ideas and religious beliefs must co-habit, opening up new horizons and undermining the sense of an absolute that prevails in a closed world.

Book Description
This perennial bestseller, now in its 2002/2003 edition, is the resource that students count on for the most current information on applying to doctoral programs in clinical or counseling psychology. Based on the authors' ongoing research, the Insider's Guide presents up-to-date facts on more than 275 accredited programs in the United States and Canada. Each program's in-depth profile includes admissions criteria, acceptance rates, research areas, specialty clinics, and more. The book also shows applicants how to determine which programs best meet their needs; obtain prerequisite credits, clinical experience, and research skills; master personal and telephone interviews; and prepare strong application materials. Special features include sample letters and personal statements, an application timeline, worksheets to aid in selecting schools and making informed final decisions, and listings of websites on a variety of topics--from the GREs to financial aid.
New in the 2002/2003 edition are additional data on acceptance rates, enrollment rates, and the average length of time to complete each program; increased information on financial aid; updated appendices on research areas and clinical opportunities; and profiles on 25 additional programs.

Excellent comprehensive guide to APA approved psych programs.......2004-03-21
Everything you'd want to know about grad school is all in this one source. This book includes everthing you'd want to know about applying to graduate schools (overall acceptance rates, whether an advanced degree helps, what graduate schools consider to be important). However, rather than presenting the author's advice and opinions, the information is compiled from empirical research studies which adds much credibility to the information provided. Very helpful, is also the comprehensive guide of all APA approved combined, clinical and counselling psych programs. Provided are such things as scales indicating how clinically or research oriented a program is, the theoretical orientations of the faculty, what percentage of students are accepted into APA internships, the GPA and GRE cutoffs, number of applications received and number admitted, percentage of students receiving financial aid, percentage who hold advanced degrees, percentage of women and minorities, average years to completion of the program as well as research and clinical oppurtunities available. This book is very helpful in providing you with a general idea of what programs you may want to look into further, however the information doesn't always seem to be 100% accurate, therefore you may want to investigate further rather than accept all the information as factual.
Get This to Get In.......2003-08-07
For anyone interested in clincal or counseling graduate study, this book is essential. These areas are extremely competitive and one cannot go into the process "blind." The general APA guide can be useful, but it covers many areas and mainly gives the basic facts on all programs. On the other hand, this book is very specialized. It gives information on the programs, but also includes invaluable information relevant to clinical and counseling psychology training. It has information on the programs, but also tells you how to prepare yourself, so you get in to those programs.
I am interested in clinical health psychology and this book was a great help. It has a useful index of programs by subject area. It also has a self-rating from programs about how strongly they emphasize research or clinical practice. It is essential to find schools that will provide you with the experiences you are looking for.
Overall, this book will help you find programs that suit your needs and maximize your potential for getting accepted to them!
Amazing.......2003-06-14
This book has been my savior I reccommend it to anyone even remotely interested in a PHd or a PsyD in clinical psychology you wont be dissapointed
Wow.......2001-02-26
This book gave me a realistic look at what it takes to get into a Ph.D. Program in psychology and how to go about getting what I needed. I have recommended this book to many others because most books on this subject only give you statistics of different schools- how many students they accept, what the average GPA is of someone who is accepted. THis book is much more practical and step by step.
Will probably increase your chances of getting in!.......2000-06-12
I carefully followed this book's recommendations throughout the entire application process. I applied to eleven APA accredited doctoral programs in clinical psychology and was accepted at EIGHT of them! The book's detailed suggestions were tremendously helpful and probably contributed to this remarkable outcome. However, I found it important to use other sources of information as well, since some data in the book is inaccurate. Inadequate information on how to select the "best-fit" school from among multiple offers was the book's greatest shortcoming. P.S. Don't worry about typing the application forms - just use very neat printing or handwriting. Type everything else, however.

Book is good guide for those who are not sure which schools they would like to attend, so this book provide short list about schools.
Problem with this book is its accuracy, it has many mistakes, especially with numbers.
Advice don't relay on it, check first on school web sites. Good luck.

Great Resource!.......2003-02-08
It's not as thick as I imagined it to be (some Peterson's Guides are really FAT), but it has just the right amount of information in there I need to shop around colleges and degree programs with.
For example, it'll show the "University of Maryland at College Park", contact address of the Dept in question, awards and degrees offered written out and their abbreviations = "Clinical Psychology (Ph.D), Industrial Psychology (MA, MS, Phd.)...".
* Then, The faculty involved = "55 fulltime (16 women), 18 part time (8 women).
* Then the amount of students, in percentile racial categories, how many applicants total and how many accepted.
* Also included are the degree requirements = "For master's Thesis required..."
* Entrance requirements "For master's, GRE General test, Subject test and minimum GPA 3.5, research...."
* Expenses, and by credit hour where applicable.
* Financial Aid..
* Faculty Research...
* and Application contact (names and numbers.)
And this is for each institution. It has REALLY helped me save a bunch of time. The counselour's offices and catalog sorting was driving me crazy! :) The book is also sorted by various types of programs. So let's say you are looking for "Counseling Psychology" which starts on page 199, it would list all the colleges who offer this type of graduate program.
Now granted, there doesn't seem to be any entries for Bachelor's programs, but since most colleges offer a Psy undergraduate program it doesn't need to be included here, which is also something of a relief in the search process. I think it's great, and it is worth the money if you know Psych is your area, but are just having a hard time deciding where to go and why. This book will help you out. Good luck to all of us! ;D
Keep your old copy!.......2002-08-08
s book thinking it was updated with the most current information on Psychology graduate programs. I was so diaspointed! I own the 2000-2001 book and it has almost the exact information! So if you already have an old copy, don't waste your money. If you don't yet have it get it, but try and get an earlier copy for cheeper, don't worry the info isn't out of date. (As you can see, I was willing to get an updated version, so I do recomend this book to applicants, just not this edition.) Good luck!

Customer Reviews:
Good for starters.......2005-03-25
I originally bought this book to have a text that I could easily check through--rather than going online--to find graduate programs in the humanities that interested me. On that score, I wasn't disappointed, although by now (2005), some or much of the specific information has changed. In short, this kind of book is a good place to start for those who are interested in exploring the wide range of programs that are available in the humanities.
That said, there are some shortcomings. If, like me, you don't have easy online access, the book's frequent referrals to more detailed online information is not all that helpful. Moreover, in the fast paced world of online communication, web sites and email addresses change, well, not quite with the speed of light, but almost. Second, they say that their information comes from the colleges themselves, but I am not 100% convinced. One university sent me its brochure, dated 2001, that was almost completely different from what appears in the guidebook. Related to this is my third point, the question of deadlines. If you miss a deadline, you've missed it, as I found out to my dismay after submitting two applications with the application fee (online). In the guidebook, the deadlines for these schools were listed as May 15 and June 1, but in fact they were April 15 and April 1, respectively. This confusion over deadlines is perhaps the worst feature of the book.
Overall, the Peterson's Guide to Graduate Programs is a helpful indicator of what programs are available. For someone not sure how to get started, this kind of book can show the way. Just keep in mind it's only a book, not The Book, after all.

Book Description
Wars don't always take place on battlefields or in jungles. The hardest-won fights are often waged within a company, a family, an individual soul. In WORKPLACE WARRIOR, Kay Hammer reveals the gripping story of the professional and personal skirmishes that led her to found Evolutionary Technologies International--a company that Inc. magazine twice rated one of the fastest-growing companies in the U.S.
It all started when Hammer found herself suddenly a single mom with two young girls to raise on an assistant professor's salary. After much inner struggle, Hammer did what more and more of us are apt to do in today's volatile marketplace: She decided to reinvent herself professionally.
WORKPLACE WARRIOR tells the intriguing tale of how this determined woman retooled her skills, advanced quickly in the software business, fought countless rounds to get new ideas accepted, failed famously...and finally won. Along the way, Hammer learned some lessons about herself and about how to survive the corporate minefield. She organizes her insights into what she calls the three stages of professional growth--The Apprentice, The Warrior, The Adventurer--and she challenges readers to examine their own progress.
Combining raw personal honesty with meticulous analysis of the "way things work" in corporate America, WORKPLACE WARRIOR is that rare book that's both personally compelling and professionally enlightening.
Customer Reviews:
Sensible, at times moving.......2001-01-05
Frankly, I like the book's content almost as much as I dislike its title and subtitle. Please, no more forced comparisons and contrasts between the battlefield and the workplace. Enough! With regard to the excellent text, as Hammer explains in the Introduction, one of her basic concepts is that there are "three stages of personal and professional growth." All three "can be characterized by their attitudes toward risk and the need for approval. These three stages are those of the apprentice, the warrior, and the adventurer." She has much of value to say about each, especially in terms of how each differs from the other two. Her larger objectives are, in my opinion, (a) to help her reader to decide which "battles" to fight as well as which to ignore, and, (b) to help her reader "win" more often on the "corporate battlefield."
According to Hammer, the defining characteristic of the apprentice is the need for external approval. The primary difference between the apprentice and the warrior is that the warrior's goals sufficiently compel her to risk disapproval and engage in conflict, while the apprentice is not yet either dissatisfied or secure enough to assume such risk." While apprentices focus on approval and warriors on vindication, adventurers focus on challenge and discovery. "They value respect, friendship, and recognition, but they do not need these things."
In Section I ("Rules of Engagement"), Hammer examines specific issues when running a private company and then other issues when planning an exit strategy. Then in Section II ("Basic Training"), she discusses effective communication in the workplace, strategies for dealing with conflict, and acquiring allies. Having thus prepared her reader for "combat", Hammer concludes with Section III ("The Battle and Beyond") in which she explains how to maximize chances for victory, why we tend to love and fear authority, and what can be learned from loss as a precursor to success. In the Epilogue, Hammer suggests that "Our real challenge is to conquer our shadow enemies -- those that mask our fear and pain -- so that regardless of our success in the battles we wage in the workplace, we move forward with greater serenity and satisfaction." If your own workplace often seems to be a battlefield and you feel ill-equipped to engage in combat, Hammer's insights and advice will be invaluable to you.
surviving the workplace wars.......2001-01-04
Hammer's take is that you should recognize the potential battles that lie in the wake of working your way up in business and starting a compare. If you do this, she maintains, you stand a better chance of success. While some of the stories Hammer tells of her treatment among the executive ranks are pretty horrendous, they come off as a forthright take on what it's like in the trenches. In fact such details add to the overall value of the book. We read of the boss who humiliated her in front of her colleagues by forming a shadow committee to duplicate her efforts behind her back and then announcing the adoption of that committee's suggestions at a department-wide meeting. She tells of an employee she was mentoring who eventually tried to take over her job. Understanding the enemy, Hammer says, is the way to win in the workplace wars.
Unlike other CEO books that make the journey seem all too pat, Hammer does a good job of painting a more complete picture, warts and all. The end result is a useful book for anyone working at a company or trying to make it with his or her own company.
Wow! Powerful........2000-09-12
Kay Hammer is one smart cookie who didn't crumble. This is a brutally honest story filled with savvy advice and thought provoking wisdom useful to anyone who works. Anywhere. The principles revealed by Hammer are potentially life-changing for anyone who truly gives them more than a passing thought. I can think of dozens of people to whom I would tacitly recommend this book. It should also be required reading for every corporate HR department.
