5 out of 5 stars Great 2nd Edition of this Guide to Success in the Workplace.......2005-04-23

Many young people make the mistake of thinking that working at a job is like being a high school or college student . . . nothing matters but the results you turn in. Wrong! Work involves frequent contact with other people. Make those contacts unpleasant for everyone but you, and they will find a way to stop your career (or even cost you your job).

This is the material that every parent has wanted to drum into their children's heads . . . but usually weren't able to succeed in getting across. Ms. Holland and Ms. Brody do a good job of explaining why you need to be considerate and cooperative, and perhaps your socially backward children will listen to them.

Or perhaps you came from a family that is a little rough around the edges socially. This book can clue you in on what's expected in the workplace. Very nice indeed for those who want to improve.

If you don't mind killing your career because other people are offended by you, then you don't need this book. But you should find out how to find the unemployment office . . . you'll probably need to go there eventually.

Having worked with dozens of young people over three decades, I was constantly struck by how few of them made an effort to make life pleasant for their coworkers. Naturally, this wasn't always clear during the interviewing process when everyone is like they are on a date. Then, too late, the bad habits appeared and coworkers were offended to the core . . . so that no one wanted to give the person another chance.

This guide can do more to enhance your career prospects than a college degree summa cum laude can do for most jobs. Read and live this advice . . . and have a chance to succeed.

5 out of 5 stars Small But Sassy!.......2001-12-17

"Help! Was That a Career Limiting Move?" by Marjorie Brody and Pamela J. Holland is a little book packed with a lot of information! From someone who spent almost two decades in the business world, I have to say that I could have used this "little book of knowledge" oh-so-many times during my career! While reading Ms. Brody and Ms. Holland's book, I smiled quietly to myself while rembering encountering many of the potentially CLM situations they cover, some of which I dealt with better than others. Having learned how to handle myself in the business world by the "trial and error" method, I would not recommend it, particularly when you can save yourself a lot of aggravation by simply reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars What I didn't know!.......2001-10-10

This book was a great help in my transition from college to the work world. Almost like a little book of secrets. It was done with humor and was very current. A necessary book for people new to the corporate world. Excellent!!!

5 out of 5 stars Help! Was That A Career Limiting Move?.......2001-09-29

What a great little resource for any one pursuing a successful business career, especially those just entering the business world. A quick read and easy to reference. I have a number of students and friends alike that will be receiving a copy in their Christmas stocking.

This book puts forth ideas and resources that are changing the ways people view, value and involve volunteers. It represents the growing profound shift in how organizations should think about volunteer contributions and support for those volunteers. If you are part of an organization that involves volunteers, whether or not you yourself work with them directly, this book is ESSENTIAL for your bookshelf. Written by one of the most respected authorities on volunteersim and volunteer management in the world, Susan Ellis outlines the key executive decisions necessary to lay the foundation for effective volunteer involvement: policies, budgeting, staffing, employee-volunteer relationships, legal issues, and the value of volunteers beyond financial. Prepare to be challenged, and prepare to have traditional ideas about what volunteers represent swept away. This is an empowering and practical read, and a book you will reach for again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Individual Freedom And The Price Of Union Membership.......2000-03-31

When does a labor union cease to become the solution to individual worker struggles and start becoming the problem? Dr. David Prindle sets before the reader a titillating example of just such a case in his definitive; The Politics of Glamour, Democracy and Ideology in the Screen Actors Guild.

Tracking the sound reasons for forming SAG in the late 1920's, Prindle details the many early injustices visited on workers in front of the camera in uniquely American industry, the movie business. Adroitly, Prindle illustrates how SAG was born as a Guild and bred into a Union. This is a comprehensive history of the titanic forces at play shaping the most widely known yet little understood labor union in the United States. Dr. Prindle explains in careful detail the evolution of SAG from founders like Eddie Cantor and Jimmy Cagney through recent Guild Presidents Ronald Reagan, Charlton Heston and Ed Asner.

If you want to know how the Screen Actors Guild evolved from a scrappy, tough-fisted bunch of actors bent on decent jobs, wages and working conditions to a wimpy, politically correct pack of star-wanna-bees, then you will enjoy this book.

Prindles style has snap, crackle and pop because he doesn't take sides in the many ideological wars that ravage SAG politics even to this day. He lets the towering Hollywood legends call it as they see it. Then he documents the antics of their retinues, deployed in battalion strength to muscle political control over one of Americas most influential labor organizations.

    5 out of 5 stars A Real Treat.......2001-08-23

A must-buy for those who want challenging, clever and sometimes witty crossword puzzles. I'd rate the degree of difficulty as being just below that of The Washington Post. Lots of Hollywood references make it a bit more fun for those who love old movies. I also appreciated the fact that every LA Times puzzle book I've worked to date contains actual words, not misspellings or created ones.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential LA TIMES.......2007-05-06

LA Times crossword puzzles are attractive for two reasons: they are more contemporary than most, and they are funny. So many crossword puzzles refer to TV shows, movies, and cultural events that happened 50 years ago. The Times is focused more on recent history. Not to say there's no depth to them -- there certainly is. You'll find plenty about Western history in the puzzles, as well as the occasional obscure word. On top of clues that are focused on the recent past there is the humor inherent in them and their corresponding answers. If you like puns -- or if you even like groaning at puns -- you'll enjoy these puzzles. You've got to approach these from a particular perspective -- one that's not too serious. It is, after all, a crossword puzzle and not brain surgery. But speaking of brain, studies are showing that we older folk (I mean older like 50) can keep our brains active and our memories sharp by doing things like crossword puzzles. These puzzles are recommended for a certain type of person -- the one who likes popular culture, and enjoys a certain kind of humor. If you've started forgetting why you came into a room, you'll like them all the more.
