SSAT 2005 by Peterson.......2005-08-28
This book is a good rendition on SSAT test preparation. Sample
diagnostic tests and exams are provided to assist candidates in
simulating live exam scenarios. The questions are topical and
current.
The candidate's strategy is as important as knowledge acquisition
of synonyms and analogies. For instance, all candidates will be
provided with paragraphs to read followed by interpretive questions. The proper test strategy is to read the questions first, review the paragraphs and attempt to answer the questions.
This form of reinforced learning will help to ensure the maximum score possible on paragraph reading/interpretation. Candidate schools will read the essay answers provided. Therefore; you should be prepared to provide a scholarly writing sample in response to standard essays on the exam.
A sample essay would be as follows:
- Write multiple paragraphs on " A Stitch in Time "
" Be Safe Rather Than Sorry "
"Trust but Verify "
Some uncomplementary reviews were written several years ago.
The 2005 version of the text differs substantially from previous
versions . My review of the 2005 version reflects important
changes in the thrust of the questions formulated for candidates
in the current examination cycle.

Satisfactory Prep.......2000-06-10
I found this book to be only average. It covers only basic math in its review. Mistakes can be noticed throughout the book. These mistakes throw off answers and make problems seem much more complex than they really are. Be prepared to see problems which have no solution as they are written. This book certainly deserved to have been proofread before publishing. Overall, I rate the book with a C+.
An excellent resource - a great prep book.......2000-04-18
My daughter, who is in 9th grade, actually liked using this prep book. It helped her immensely, as she is not a great student but managed to work well with the material in the book. It is instructional but not overwhelming. I highly recommend it.
Customer Reviews:
Book was OK, software was not.......2001-07-02
This book was useful, but the software was a disappointment. the sofware was not very similar to the actual GRE test.
It's not worth it. Spend your money on other things........2001-01-07
Let me tell you, first and foremost, I did not buy this book, somebody bought it for me. On the cover of the book it says 5 full length practice tests. Out of those only three are CAT's. The other two are paper based. I had a lot of trouble with the software. I installed it on my computer and a menu came up with three items. ONLINE GRE CAT, ACCESS ADVISOR and ONLINE PETERSON'S. Anyone looking at this will figure that the first is a shortcut to taking it on the web, right? Wrong. The only one that works is ACCESS ADVISOR, which gives you a lot of information about financial aid. But what good is all that if you don't do well on the GRE and therefore cannot get in to the university of your choice? When I finally managed to get to the correct website, and login to take the test, this is what I found. It is NOTHING like the GRE CAT, with one exception which is - each test has 93 questions. First and foremost, the tests are not timed, it tells you to take all the time that you like. Which is pretty stupid because time is the worst enemy on the test for a lot of test-takers. The questions are not presented in a coherent order. Each section is distinguished from the other, but within the sections itself the questions are thrown together randomly. There is a lot of repetition from one test to the next, even though I was assured by the technical staff that, that just isn't possible. This is an extract from a reply I got from one of the staff members-
"The algorithm will not select the same question twice because it has been set not to do so. Even if the same essay is presented, a slight difference in nuance in the question still makes the test practicable, because ignoring the nuance will affect the correct answer and therefore the level at which is the next question is drawn from the database. The algorithm has been strenuously tested, so that confidence is there that it will produce what it was designed to produce, viz., an adaptive test that will test how well a question is interpreted by the test-taker in order to apply the relevant principles to produce a correct answer."
This answer is a great one, but it just isn't true. I took the third test(I have had a major problem with the second one) and 90% of the questions were identical. I did it with my eyes closed and the results below will show you what I mean. On the first test, I got VERBAL-746, QUANTITATIVE-800 and ANALYTICAL-750. On the third test I got VERBAL-800, QUANTITATIVE-800, ANALYTICAL-800. I am good, but not that good. My actual score is somewhere around the 1900-2000 range. On top of that, there is no way you can review the questions and answers to see where you went wrong. Not that I need to, especially with the third test. ALL OF THE QUESTIONS IN THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST ARE REPEATED ON ALL OF THE CAT's. My problems lie in the Analytical section. I just can't get my head around those questions. Therefore, I skipped the other sections and headed straight for the aforementioned. You guessed it, I was extremely disappointed. There are "11 pages, that's right, ELEVEN" alloted to the analytical part of the test. 238 pages are devoted to Quantitative and Verbal (combined, not 238 pages each), but you get barely anything for a section you should be able to get 800 on if you pratice enough and the strategies that you pick up from books like these are good. The only helpful feature is the support staff, who get back to you promptly. The verbal and the quantitative section (strategies, examples, solutions and explanations) are comprehensive, but the entire package is not worth it. Spend your money on Kaplan or ETS Powerprep. I am going to ask for my money back for this one, if I can.

This helped a little.......2002-02-21
The book was not organized well at all. It was nice to include the study plans, but they need to match in terms of pages and titles throughout the book. In addition, the online exams were not as difficult as some of the other practice tests that I took. So the book gives a false sense of your score. It is not what I consider a good study book. It was a good thing that I took some other practice tests so that I could compare and contrast.
It leads you step by step.......2001-08-14
I looked through all the prep books for GRE at a store front and this book by far looked acomplishable. It is designed for people who will be studying for GRE on your own. It provides you a well organized study plan but you can study with your own pace. It starts out pretty simple by giving you an explanation for each questions and slowly the volume increaces and picks up speed. It also gives you a full length practice exam at the end. You can do the whole study with the book or on CD, whichever is convenient for you. This one was definately my first choice.

Book Description
This guide is geared to test takers who already have a solid foundation of GRE skills and do not need remedial-level help. It offers preparation for all areas of the testoverbal, quantitative, and analytical writing¡Xthrough subject review and hundreds of practice questions. The book features diagnostic tests and subject practice tests, as well as additional tests on the CD. Included are skill-building exercises and guidance for the new analytical writing section of the GRE, which replaced analytical questions in October 2002. The analytical writing section requires applicants to write two essays¡Xyour own perspective on a given issue and an analysis of a given argument.

Buy Something Else.......2006-08-14
I bought this book primarily for the CD, which could have been a lot better. The program cycled through test questions that I had already answered, and I only took a few tests. Also, it seems to only have one version of each type of essay.
If I were just judging the book, I would give it 1 star. The actual text is awful. The questions are horribly constructed. Many of the analogies do not even contain words that are the same part of speech (ETS would never do that), and the reading comprehension questions mostly asked for factual information.
Barron's has a much better prep for the GRE and ETS's free CAT practice test is a much better way to practice computer test-taking.
Wow...I really can't believe how bad this book is. I feel like I wasted a lot of time with it.
Excellent for extra CATS.......2004-08-17
I used only the CD-ROM from this book/CD.If you know the basics and want more practice this book is perfect for you. The writer claims that the CD can generate unlimited CATS and maybe this is true. I took 3 cats and none of them had a same question.I'll take more.Very satisfied!

MY FAVORITE ACT PREP.......2003-04-22
I used 4 ACT Preps and this one was by far my favorite! It did lack in some capacities as compared to the other texts but it definitely filled a lot of holes that other test preps didn't even approach which is what I think ultimately led me to score a 35!
Great book.......2003-01-11
The book and CD were very great but the ACT is too hyped up. You can receive a great score without ever buying a book to help you study.
Inaccurate, not even close!.......2001-10-24
Before i took my ACT last june, i studied with this book, it was awfully inaccurate, with the practice tests, my average scores ranged from 17-21 and on the real test my scores came out 25-26! This October I am taking my ACT again and obtained a real ACT sample test - which i scored very high on ranging f rom 25-34. With this book, my scores are still around 17-21.... i wonder about that! The sample tests are extremely inaccurate, they do not portray the ACT accurately or even resemble the test. Plus, i've found many mistakes in every section. It's nonsense and not worth buying!
Awful, simply awful.......1999-04-26
First off there were many mistakes, the science test required you to used learned knowlege, there were gobs of mistakes, and it was overall inacurate in portraying the ACT.

CLEP.......2003-01-16
I found the practice exercises in this book to be very helpful, and I did really well when I took the CLEP afterwards.
Horrible! Nothing like the real test!.......2000-09-27
I studied out of 7 different preparation books, and this one, by far is the worst one! The questions in this book are really difficult, tricky and unlike the CLEP exam! The questions in the actual CLEP exam arent tricky like the SAT or GRE, they are straightforward. For some reason, Peterson's has decided to put in SAT-like questions on their practice exam. This book should be thrown out of the market because its NOTHING like the real exams! I would recommend Princeton Review's Cracking the CLEP, and Review for Clep Examination by Comex Systems. The REA also writes really accurate practice exams. If you are taking English, I also recommend you purchase "The Writer's Reference" by Diana Hacker. That was probably the most helpful book in brushing up on your English.
Just like all other Petersons books... excellent quality...........2000-04-01
Looking to maximize my ability on the CLEP tests to avoid taking numerous classes that I have no interest in. If you'd like to get practice on these tests, than this book may help.
Tough questions.......1999-07-20
Don't buy this book if u don't want to spend time on learning the hard questions that will not appear on real clep tests. I registered for one exam of natural science and after reading this book, i felt that i did'nt know anything about natural science; cancelled and postponed the exam. But actually the exam was very easy with all the simplest and straightforward questions .The books that I felt useful for clep are Barron's , REA and cracking the clep

Compared to Kaplan's Book..........2000-07-25
With 7 units covering the various sections of the test, 2 paper-based tests, and a CD that isn't much more than a link to their online CAT, I would not recommend this book to anyone unless you're really reluctant to spend more [money] on the Kaplan book.
A rather disappointing product...

Excellent.......2001-02-09
This is the best SAT book I've used - it really helped me improve my score. I thought it was well-written, and the practice tests were really useful. I would recommend it over any of the others out there.
Good, but not the best on the market.......2000-11-15
I have purchased this book hoping to find something innovative, something very cool - and under the cover of so much advertisment I found a simple, but not bad, SAT preparation book. It has all the elements to prepare for the real thing except for the practice tests and the so-called "SAT words" - both of them are low in quantity. Perchaps it's a suggestion for the authors. Overall, I think I wouldn't have bought it if I had seen the Barron's title earlier.
PS: The "word teams" is just great - explore it more and this might be your key to success!
Look no further........2000-05-06
This is the best SAT prep book out there. This has great pointers for avoiding common mistakes, a comprehensive vocabulary building section, an easy-to-understand math review, and even gives you prep talks along the way to keep you calm but psyched and ready to ace the test. This was great, I recommend it to anyone hoping for high scores on the SATs.
This is the best all-round SAT prep book I have found........1999-09-26
Lots of practice questions and tips for difficult problems. The CD-ROM is neat because you can take a practice test and see what how you would score.

Book Description
While some conclude from the revolutions of 1989 that socialism is dead, interest in socialism continues because of persisting problems of contemporary capitalism. In this exciting text, Michael W. Howard offers critiques of liberal, communitarian, postmodern and some Marxist perspectives in order to develop a left-liberal defense of a model of self-managed market socialism that includes a basic income for all. Specific applications of his view include analyses of its implications for the global marketplace, the changing nature of workplaces, and media restructuring and ownership. This work is sure to be of interest to social scientists, public policy makers, and economists as well as to feminists, ecologists, and others concerned with how market socialism is relevant to their social issues.
