Dasch and Finney have compilied a series of inspirational short essays that are supportive of those in search of their calling. I especially enjoyed the variety of perspectives presented.

Not a how-to book, you'll have to ponder and reflect to appreciate the full value of this text. Find Your Calling would be stronger, if the authors contributed more of their expertise to help readers develop an understanding of the process one goes through.

Wake up! There's joy in just about every career imaginable........1998-03-08

I just LOVED this book. What a delight. The authors have a light, fresh, relaxed writing style that really shows off the subjects of the book. So many different people, all sharing one thing: they've found a livelihood they love. It was wonderful to read about so many different people, doing different types of work -- but still sharing a warm commonality. They've all found their calling. Makes me realize that there's hope for me, too! I'm getting another copy for a good friend who's graduating from college soon -- she'll need this!

If you need to buy the book because the author is your instructor,then do so. If you want to learn how to make sound, prudent decisions as a firefighter, purchase John Norman's "Fire Officer's Handbook." The difference between the two is like reading Dr. Suess and Shakespeare.

Practical and worthwhile, even if you aren't a member of the FDNY.......2007-04-08

It is widely discussed in fire service circles that this text is an amalgom of FDNY tactical bulletins and other internal documents, such as Ladders 3 and Ladders 4. If so, it offers useful information for fire problems most of us routinely encounter. The 3rd edition has hideously tiny print and is over run by wordiness, but does have additional chapters on WMD issues as well as townhouse/garden apartment fires. There is new text intersprised all through out the book. Norman is a tough read - passive voice, run on sentences and double negatives - but the material is still worth digging through. And hey, the bulding classification codes from the 1st and 2nd editions got corrected.
A must for any working firefighter.

Very informative!.......2007-03-17

I found this book to be very informative. It helps answer the "what if this happens" questions that every firefighter ponders when they have time to reflect. I definitely recommend picking up this book whether you are an actual officer or firefighter.

This book is full of valuable information, and has helped to fill in some gaps in my understanding of certain firefighting tactics that I simply have not learned in my five years in the fire service. This book simply has more valuable, pertinent information than any other fire/rescue text I have ever read. Incredible!

The books only flaw is the photos are of very poor quality.

It is full of a great wealth of knowledge and insight. Awesome text, very easy, interesting read.

I highly recommend this book.

This is quite possibly the finest tactical instruction manual on the market. Despite regional variences in tactics, this book will expand your understanding of your current SOP's and allow you to try something new with a proven record. Masterfully written and not the boring text you're used to in textbooks. This is a must read for anyone wishing to advance in the fire service...truly a new essential.

Good but general.......2007-01-09

I bought this book to prepare for FDNY exams. While I have not taken the exam yet I found this book helpful to prepare me for the test prep tutorials that FDNY offers. The book is too general to prepare you fully for your local exam. Check with your FD for prep classes specific to that department.

Fire 101.......2005-09-07

Look for a book that is for your part of the country. I found out the hard way that there are different tests for certain areas of the country. This book will help in reading and diagrams that pertain to Southern California.

Unfortunately most of the practice tests contain errors in the keys and answers. I do not recommend this book.

This book was a little helpful at best. There were so many grammatical errors, and just plain wrong answers. I would not recommend this book, and I think the person who wrote should have spent the money to have the worked checked. A mistake here and there... no problem, but this thing is riddled with major errors.

WRONG ANSWERS DONT HELP AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-03-18

This book is excellent in providing information such as formulas, scenarios and even mechanical aptitude. BUT, and its a very big BUT!!!!!! This book gives sample questions to each category it describes, then it posts the answers at the end of each sample question area. This is all great, RIGHT? Wrong!!! The answers that it gives to the sample questions are WRONG!!!! Okay...not all of them are wrong, but to have even one that is wrong is horrible. This book is supposed to guarantee at least a score of 80% on the exam or your money back. I found at least three wrong answers already in the mechanical principles area. Don't get me wrong, at first I was trying to believe that the book was right and that I was wrong, but after further reviewing and looking over the same problem over and over, I realized that they are wrong. One of the answers even contradicts itself. These are still good questions, so if you want to know what types of questions are asked on the test, buying this book won't hurt. But just don't rely on checking your answers with the answer keys at the end of each test. Have someone else who really knows what they are doing check them if you can. All-in-all, I am really mad at the people who were supposed to edit this book. They should give the lousy ten-dollars back to everyone who bought this book, regardless of their score on their exam.

This is a great book for anyone who is thinking of being a firefighter or if you enjoy reading about firefighting. I was amazed on how many colored photos were in this book,and how much information was included in the captions. This book tells about the history of the fire service from the days of George Washington to the present. This book also tells about the different types of fire engines,fire trucks,and rescue vehicles there are,and how they are used to do different jobs at the fire scene. It tells the different hose sizes and the different nozzles that the fire engine carries,and which nozzle is used for which fire. It also tells about the different tools each of the vehicles have. The book tells about how many firemen ride on the vehicles and the different jobs each of them have. It also tells all that happens on the fire scene from when the firefighters first arrive on the scene to until they leave. The book also tells the basic training for a firefighter,and all of the information they have to know. It also tells of the safety each of the firemen have,and about all the protective clothing all the firemen have. The book also lets you know the regular day that a fireman goes through. Finally, the book has a safety section,in the back of the book,to tell children what to do in case of a fire or if they are on fire.
