    Book Description

In The New Golden Age, bestselling author and economist Ravi Batra identifies the roadblocks to economic prosperity--and what we need to do to overcome them. Bringing the same insight and expertise that made books like The Downfall of Capitalism and Communism international bestsellers, Batra takes on falling minimum wages, corporate scandals, rocketing oil prices, and many of the other crises facing the world economy. He also offers an expansive, optimistic vision of how the international community can address them and bring about something historically unprecedented: true global economic prosperity.

5 out of 5 stars The New Golden Age: The Coming Revolution against Political Corruption and Economic Chaos.......2007-08-08

An exceptional economics book that tells the truth directly and in simple and completely understandable terms. Scuttles the Media and Political hype and presents what is needful and workable toward economic democracy that is now being submerged be the Global "Free Market" lies, myths and swindles.
Should be required reading for every truly patriotic citizen.

5 out of 5 stars Stays on message - still the most potent critic of Capitalism .......2007-06-16

Ravi Batra is still at it, almost three decades since he penned the classic "The Downfall of Capitalism and Communism: A New Study of History". We have come a long way with this author since then and never been bored. Batra's thesis is that we have entered the era of financial capitalism, the last stage of the Age of Acquisitors, where an increasingly uneven distribution of wealth feeds into increasing financial leverage and speculation, until the system can't handle it anymore and collapses. Following the collapse is financial destitution of many and social chaos. Such an outcome is still the most potent form of criticism of Capitalism. If Batra is at some point proved right that
    a) the Great Depression of the 1930s was no fluke and
    b) that innovations and safeguards to our financial system adopted since then cannot prevent another meltdown,
then that is a major an indictment of our form of social organization and, ultimately, our way of life.

At the heart of Batra's writings are the ideas of his mentor P.R. Sarkar. Batra has done more than anyone to publicize the message of this giant of modern day Indian thought in the West. This book is yet another installation into that body of work. While the message may no longer be as novel or fresh as it was in the 1980s, his work now builds on three decades of experience, including a multitude of accurate predictions (although the most important one has so far been a spectacular failure - the Great Depression of 1990!). He is now more circumspect about such things, including the adoption of a fiat monetary system in the 1970s and how monetary policy has been successfully used to forestall a major crash. In one sense he is quite correct, our monetary and financial system is an ongoing social experiment. Batra's work is, if anything, a reminder that we take a lot of things for granted. It is healthy to consider the alternatives, such as if the systemic stability were to give way to catastrophe. Central banks all over the world now devote considerable resources into researching this question and government surveillance of the financial market is now commonplace with stock markets all over the world soaring. Interestingly, all of that, albeit important, is not really the key focus of his work. As the name of his new book suggests, it is the glorious new dawn of a world based on the sentient philosophy of his mentor that is his main message.

Time will tell if Batra and the ideas he promotes are the real deal. So far, he has yet to prove the worth of these ideas with his major prediction. However, he has offered many novel insights into how modern capitalism works. For instance, in the 1980s he was one of the first to talk about how the financial sector was becoming the key to social developments in the West. Today, we take such insights for granted. Overall, the ideas he is describing are more than worthy of our careful consideration. Let us also not forget that he made a prediction in the book mentioned above in 1978 that Communism would fall. It did. As is the norm for him, the book is exceedingly well written and the message as fascinating as ever. Batra tends to be a few steps ahead of the rest of us, even if it sometimes looks as if he going down the wrong path. Even if he has made a big misstep, in my opinion, he is still headed in the right direction. The ideas are serious and profound and also filled with hope. The book is highly recommended for the intellectually curious or those scoping about for a more meaningful approach to life than what the real world has on offer in the early 21th century.

    5 out of 5 stars A Call to Arms!!!.......2007-03-25

In this book, Batra expains how the economic chaos and political corruption will continue to escalate and worsen over the next few years until the working class eventually rise up like warriors against the acquisitor class (capitalist - Russ Winter calls them the "pigmen") who have infiltrated all aspects of our government, the press, and our society at large. This uprising will dawn a new golden era of prosperity for the masses and the working class. A move away from "trickle down" economics where indebtedness of the masses for the fortitude of the richest has resulted in an increasingly unstable bubble-led economy with resultant record trade imbalances that leaves us (as a nation and society) in a precarious and vulnerable situation.

In two volumes these books review and expand the theory that poverty in the world's poorest regions could be alleviated by providing small loans to microentrepreneurs. Volume 1 provides detailed analysis of this theory and offers policy recommendations for practitioners in this field. Volume 2 presents empirical evidence drawn from comparative experiences in seven developing countries. The work assesses the success of this policy and provides some startling conclusions. This is essential reading for all those interested in development, poverty-reduction, social welfare and finance.

        Book Description

The world of religion has been unacknowledged and often unseen by many development practitioners. The areas of common concern and activity, though, are numerous and have great importance in the global effort to fight poverty.

Mind, Heart and Soul in the Fight Against Poverty explores the diversity of collaboration between faith institutions and development agencies. ranging from community level interventions in support of excluded populations, work on education, health, and HIV/AIDS, restoring communities after conflicts, and global efforts to bring greater clarity and meaning to challenges such as poor country debt, labor and the struggle against poverty. What is emerging is a set of new partnerships which are founded on common concerns for the welfare of poor communities and the global cause of social justice.

The need for broader and clearer insight, and for creative efforts to see and understand the whole, emerge as fundamental lessons of recent decades of development experience. Mind, Heart and Soul in the Fight Against Poverty seeks to delve more deeply into these lessons, stressing the centrality of faith in the human experience.

          Book Description

Trade is one of the most powerful forces linking our lives, and a source of unprecedented wealth. Yet millions of the world’s poorest people are being left behind. Increased prosperity has gone hand in hand with mass poverty. Already obscene inequalities between rich and poor are widening. World trade could be a powerful motor to reduce poverty, and support economic growth, but that potential is being lost. The problem is not that international trade is inherently opposed to the needs and interests of the poor, but that the rules that govern it are rigged in favor of the rich.

If Africa, East Asia, South Asia, and Latin America were each to increase their share of world exports by one per cent, the resulting gains in income could lift 128 million people out of poverty. In Africa alone, this would generate $70bn – approximately five times what the continent receives in aid.

In their rhetoric, governments of rich countries constantly stress their commitment to poverty reduction. Yet in practice rigged rules and double standards lock poor people out of the benefits of trade, closing the door to an escape route from poverty.

Reform of world trade is only one of the requirements for ending the deep social injustices that pervade globalization. Action is also needed to reduce inequalities in health, education and the distribution of income and opportunity, including those inequalities that exist between women and men. However, world trade rules are a key part of the poverty problem; fundamental reforms are needed to make them part of the solution. Oxfam’s campaign, Make Trade Fair, aims to change world trade rules so that trade can make a real difference in the fight against global poverty.

This report gives comprehensive research findings and analysis, presenting a powerful case for changes in trade laws, and a reform agenda to make these changes happen.

Uninsured risk has far-reaching consequences for rural growth as well as poverty reduction. A range of informal mechanisms to insure rural households against the impact of shocks, but they are a modest component of a risk layering strategy for well-off households and even less protective for low-income households. Formal insurance mechanisms have inherent market imperfections. State interventions to address these limitations have proven costly and generally are targeted poorly. Recent developments in microfinance as well as in insurance marketing have opened new possibilities for household risk reduction. Index insurance, such as weather indexing, addresses other inherent problems in insurance by using an indicator that is not affected by individual behavior and may address monitoring costs and moral hazard. A number of innovations using index insurance are being tried currently in diverse settings ranging from India to Mongolia to Malawi. Marketing costs may limit the provision of such insurance to small farmers, but even in such cases microfinance institutes may serve as market intermediaries. Moreover, state and sub national governments can use insurance to achieve countercyclical funding of programs. In this vein, municipal governments in Mexico have used insurance to finance disaster contingency while the World Food Program has insured a portion of its emergency assistance to Ethiopia. Humanitarian organizations and NGOs may also seek insurance in this manner.

                    Book Description

Poor people in developing countries are often affected by droughts, floods, illness, crop failure, job loss, and economic downturns. Much of their energy goes into coping with these shocks and into day-to-day survival. While insurance and credit markets, combined with widespread social security, provide an important cushion against poverty in rich countries, the need for immediate survival may lock the poor into persistent poverty in developing countries. The poor in developing countries do have informal mechanisms to cope with risk and misfortune. These are based on income diversification, risk avoidance, self-insurance by saving together with family, and community-based mutual assistance. Nevertheless, the scope of these mechanisms remains limited. Repeated individual-specific shocks such as illness or pests, or covariate risks associated with drought, flood, or recession, undermine the ability of individuals and their families to cope with risk. We now know much more about vulnerability to risk and how poor people cope. Even more importantly, we have learned much about the large long-term consequences of these risks, which condemns many to persistent poverty and excludes them from economic growth. But there is much that can be done. The micro-level studies that underpin this book offer new insights on how effective public action could be more effective in protecting the vulnerable against persistent poverty. Policy should focus on providing a comprehensive menu of ex-ante and post-crisis protection mechanisms, including new forms of insurance, savings, safety nets, and the means to strengthen the poor's asset base. Local communities have a big role to play: public funds should not be used to replace indigenous community-based support networks; rather they should be used to build on the strengths of these networks to ensure broader and more effective protection. With numerous thematic chapters and case studies of both best practice and of failure, from a mix of low-income and middle-income countries across the developing world, this book evaluates alternatives in widening insurance and protection provision, and makes an important contribution to the topical field of insurance and risk.

                    Book Description

With the use of either your right, or left hand, this 66 page manual will teach you to type on a standard keyboard. Within 1-3 weeks of working through the drills in this manual, you can step into any mainstream program to learn typing.

I do not like the idea of asking these kids to use a "special keyboard." When I lost my hand at 10, I did not want one more reason to be `different.' I wanted to use the tools, and systems the others kids used. This why I push using a normal keyboard - just like the other kids.

If you know of the Chicken Soup for the Soul® books, you might have heard, or read the story of my learning to type in the `60 after an accident which took a great deal of one hand. When the story became so famous in th e'90's, I began to get calls weekly, from parents and typing teachers, wanting my help to find the One Hand Typing Manual. It is almost impossible to find, so I wrote my own!

I filled it with personal messages from some of my friends, people who have done very well with one hand: Jim Abbott the famous baseball player, Sen. Bob Dole, and Bree Walker, the Southern California News anchorwoman. Also, throughout are motivational quotes, and short DID YOU KNOW's, which tell about some famous people who overcame a disability.

A great resource for people with one hand that want to keep up with the fast paced electronic world. The quotes and inspiring stories are wonderful!! This book is a must!

Provides not only the basic skills for those using only one hand to type, but provides a classroom atmosphere -- time to take a break - stretch, etc -- and words of encouragement from those who have experienced challenges in their own life -- Senator Bob Dole, International Speaker, Art Berg -- and many others. Instruction and Encouragement in one book -- the investment in One Hand Typing and Keyboarding Manual: With Personal Motivational Messages From Others Who Have Overcome! for those who need this assistance is well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Dvorak or QWERTY?.......2000-10-26

Hello! I am Lilly Walters, the author of this manual.

If the student has a severe disability regarding an upper limb, they receive a great deal of support from vocational, occupational and vocational therapists, who usually suggest alternative keyboards, and voice activated computers.

However, the student with good use of one hand, usually does not receive much attention. They are able to make their way in the world, and don't seek professional advice. So, when it comes to learning to keyboard and type, they are often told, "Oh, you'll learn something else." I know, I fall into this category. When I was hurt they told my parents, "Oh she'll do other things." That was bad advice 30 years ago. It is horrible advice today! In today's world, keyboarding skills are vital.

If you, or your student, has good use of at least one hand, a standard keyboard can easily be used. When alternative systems are used commonly in the mainstream, then the one-hand typist should commonly be encouraged to should use them. Until then, these people should be helped to use mainstream tools whenever possible.

Unfortunately, most researchers suggest the keyboard layout system known as Dvoark. The Dvoark system has layouts for two hands, just the right, or just the left hand. Although it only takes 30 seconds to set up most computers to the Dvoark system, I am strongly against it. My experience is that Dvoark is pushed on the one-handed child by a two handed adult, who themselves does not use the two-handed Dvoark system! (Yes, this makes me crazy).

One hundred years ago, typing was a new skill. The typists went so fast (crawling by today's standards) the keys would jam. So they created the QWERTY layout (see the keys on your keyboard starting at the top left) because it was so hard, it slowed us down! Dr. Dvoark came up with a layout that is faster, and easier for the typist, but it is not smarter for the person with one hand.

Why use the standard QWERTY one hand typing method?

One: Sellablity in the job market. The reality is, the easier it is to bring someone into the workplace, the more appealing they are as an employee. I am a one hand typist. I can step up to any standard keyboard, ask a two handed person to move over, and assist them with the challenges they are facing with the task at hand (no pun intended!). I am not disadvantaged by using me mainstream equipment, my employers are not disadvantaged by hiring me. The 30 seconds needed to change a keyboard over to Dvoark would separate me from the other workers.

Two: MY main issue in alternatives to the standard keyboard, is these kids do not want one more reason to feel different. The number one toy today is the computer, hence, the keyboard. Imagine a child not being able to play with his friends because he does not know how to use their "normal" keyboard. Or, if he does play with them, he must struggle to figure out the keyboard they are using. That tiny 30 seconds needed to change a keyboard over to Dvoark is unthinkable to children at play.

You can learn to type easily with hand!

                    Arise and GO forth!

Lilly Walters, International speaker, author, speakers bureau executive, and one hand typist. Lilly@aboutonehandtyping.com

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-10-27

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

                    My favorite chapters were:

                    1. Initial business concerns
                    2. Your business' structure
                    3. Business start-up details
                    5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
                    7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
                    8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!
