    4 out of 5 stars Essential Coleman.......2005-07-01

This is the one book to bring into an audition when you're up for a big role. It gives you confidence to stride out on stage if you know you've prepared something out of "VOCAL SELECTIONS FROM SWEET CHARITY BY CY COLEMAN." I don't know what it is, but it doesn't even matter, no matter what the show, if you can strut your stuff in SWEET CHARITY, you're in like Flynn. When I was a boy I wore out my old Original Cast LP from the show, and it's a recording that oozes confidence and sass. Though they used to say that if Jerome Robbins was directing, drop the "Sweet Charity" material because he hated the show and hated everyone involved with it and if he heard even a few notes of any of the tunes, he'd just have his assistant holler out "Next" and you were out on the street, pronto. However for most directors, on the Stem or elsewhere, they most of them respond to the honest human appeal behind the celebrated Coleman-Fields tunes. "Baby Dream Your Dream," "I'm the Bravest Individual," and "If My Friends Could See Me Now" are all examples of what Whitney Houston used to call the greatest love of all, loving oneself, and that's what people go to a show to see. However, if you're in a more introspective mood, and you're auditioning for some Adam Guettel show or something equally cleak, you might try "Where am I going?"--it's a number everyone can relate to, because we've all been in those shoes, the time when you wake up in the morning and can't think of a reason to go on living. In the theater we always say, "The Show Must Go On," but the key to remembering how civilians feel is, sometimes the show doesn't have to go on. That's when a tune like WAIG comes in handy. Another fiery number, made famous in the original Broadway production by Helen Gallagher, is "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This," which might be the most rock-oriented of all the tunes in the VOCAL SELECTIONS book. But no matter which one you choose, you're a winner. The lesson of SWEET CHARITY is that, while you may be only a taxi dancer, and you sell yourself for a dime a dance (or whatever), if you still have belief in yourself and project the right attitude, somebody somewhere will be attracted to you. It's this attitude which will take you far, for all you have to do is have faith. When you open up a Playbill and go to the section that had bios of the actors in the show, you'll see that half of them thank God. Why do you think that is? With faith on your side you'll get applause on both sides of the footlights! And from above too! So don't look down and shout it out:

If they could see me now,
    That little gang of mine,
    I'm eating fancy chow
    And drinking fancy wine.

An essential item for all working actors, whether you can sing or not (though it helps)!

    Book Description

Our country is changing its collective attitude toward poverty. Government support is out; volunteerism, workfare, and private charity are in--with a vengeance. Sociologist Janet Poppendieck studies this watershed through the lens of emergency food programs. Traveling the country to work in soup kitchens and "gleaning" centers, the author puts faces on these volunteers and the recipients of their good works. Sweet Charity? reports from the front line: from the "clients," who endure endless humiliations for meals too small to feed their families, and the well-meaning volunteers, whose enthusiasm cannot overcome the underlying causes of all the misery they witness, to the directors who find their homegrown programs becoming more and more "successful" while wondering if they are not in some way contributing to the very problem they're working so hard to solve. Timely and provocative, Sweet Charity? is the most persuasive argument in recent years that America cannot win a war on poverty with stopgap measures and empty rhetoric.

4 out of 5 stars The Real Question: Should no one go hungry?.......2007-01-02

After reading this book and having worked at a food pantry for a couple of years, my first thought was, "Is the problem of hunger in America, or anywhere for that matter, solveable? I have concluded that it is not a solveable problem, only a manageable one. 90 percent of the patrons of the food pantry I work at are drunks and drug addicts. Many show up completely drunk or strung out on meth. Bear in mind that I have great sympathy for ANYONE who is in need of food. But due to the nature of addiction, I don't believe the problem is solveable in terms of more government handouts. The issue of indignity is nearly a non-issue. Our patrons return day after day, year after year. Everyone is served cheerfully and with great respect. Are we enabling the addictions to continue? Absolutely. Is there an alternative? No.

No adult is ENTITLED to be fed as the food stamp program with its debit cards allows users to pretend. Receiving free food is a hand out. Pretending otherwise is a dis-service to those served and a farce. Having said that, I believe whole-heartedly in charity - not entitlements. And there is no shame in receiving charity as revealed to all in the bible. But should people be encouraged to believe that by virtue of being born this, the richest country of the world, that they are ENTITLED to be fed? Of course not.

The book covered many of the issues of hunger and charity but it was slanted toward the view that "charity is inefficient and undignified" and "entitlements such as larger food stamp allotments are efficient and dignified". The author kept coming back to her point that the real beneficiaries of pantries, kitchens and gleaning are the volunteers in terms of socializing, exercise, feeling good about helping others, learning to be thankful for what one has, etc.. I beg to differ with that opinion. Of course the volunteers benefit but the volunteers are not stupid people. They can see the benefits of their works and would not volunteer if they believed that their work only relieved the government from its duty to feed everyone. I gave the book four stars for covering the history of food charity and entitlements as well as extensive quotes of those within the industry. The book is very well-written and is thought-provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Balanced Diet, Food for Thought........2001-05-09

This book treats the emergency food system with fairness and offeres a balanced view of the strengths and weaknesses of the national shift toward in-kind food relief. The author does a wonderful job of exposing the problems with institutionalizing "emergency" food programs, while governmental agencies weaken the safety net for the poor. In addition to excellent ethnographic work, the author adds a number of nuggets of historical data to build context and meaning. A must read for those hungry for explainations as to why government had abandoned the needy and ignored the structural problems that produce what the author terms "food insecurity."

5 out of 5 stars Offers much for thinkers, carers and activists alike.......1999-11-13

Ever felt that you want to help out in the world? Ever felt that you didn't know how? Ever felt you did know how, but it still didn't feel right? Anyone who has experienced these dilemmas should read Poppendieck's stream of thoughts and conversations, collected together in `Sweet Charity.' Subtitled `Emergency Food and the End of Entitlement,' it takes us through the practicalities and realities, and the rights and the wrongs of the movement to feed hungry people in the United States. A country of abundance and plenty, the apparent paradox of hunger is not lost on most of us. Poppendieck takes us into this contradiction and pushes hard to understand it. Take the introduction. The Good King Wenceslas carol is used to present a movement, a movement to feed the poor and hungry of America. But soon enough we find ourselves faced with a question: do these food banks and food pantries, these rescue operations, these places known collectively as `the emergency food system,' make our society kinder but less just? Does the kindness of Wenceslas betray those who believe in a long-term vision of economic justice? Poppendieck, Professor of Sociology at Hunter College in New York, has worked in charitable organizations herself, helping those who have problems accessing food. This is not an anti-charity book. Rather, it is a book that questions what charity should be, what we should do, and, most of all, what the government must understand. "Charity for all" opens the book with a picture of charity as recreation, down in New Jersey, the Boy Scouts of America sorting through food. It's early Thursday morning in chapter two, this time in Yorkville, NYC, where the newly unemployed jam into a food pantry. Then it's onto Cleveland, Ohio, in chapter three, where unemployment has transformed steel into rust. Then later, to Maine and California, Texas and Illinois, Pennsylvania and Kansas, all images of helping the hungry. So it goes. Poppendieck has been around in her attempts to unravel the `second tier' of food distribution in the USA. And this is what her travels told. That emergency food has seven deadly `ins': insufficiency, inappropriateness, nutritional inadequacy, instability, inaccessibility, inefficiency and indignity. This septet is used as a framework to clarify the problems of the emergency food system. At the core is the belief that hunger should not exist in America and that dealing with it through ad hoc private sector schemes, however well-meaning, is simply not good enough. But through this comes the author's sometimes disorienting perception that those who work with emergency food are as much confused as the rest of us. And that, in the main, these people are good people. Janet Poppendieck's great strength is to place the individual in a moral dilemma while at the same time pushing us into a community, a society, wherein the solution lies: "a powerful movement for justice and equality." And she allows us to reflect upon what many might have thought but never said: that "emergency food actually contributes to the problem it tries to solve." Readable and sympathetic, `Sweet charity' allows us all the freedom to reflect on society, justice, and the politics of hunger. This book offers much for thinkers, carers and activists alike.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone concerned with social justice issues........1999-11-11

Janet Poppendieck's thoroughly researched book, Sweet Charity: Emergency Food and the End of Entitlement, deserves its reputation as the "hot" book among those who work in hunger advocacy. Janet pricks our conscience; she helps us see that direct food relief, alone, is not the answer. It may make us feel better to hand a bag of food to a hungry person on Sunday, but what will happen on Monday? The private sector has institutionalized emergency relief; not only has this not adequately helped those who live at the edge of hunger because they lack the money for sufficient food, but it has allowed us to believe we have solved the hunger problem. By gleaning fruit, participating in food drives and serving in soup kitchens, we have allowed ourselves to be taken "off the hook," and we haven't assumed responsibility for the larger issue of advocacy for systemic social change and the role government must play. Ending hunger in this country will take a multi-pronged approach. Ms. Poppendieck's book pushes us to go beyond the simple solutions and become advocates for those whose voice has not been heard.

                    Book Description

In almost 1,500 biographical entries, this comprehensive, authoritative reference work covers the European labor movement from its origins to the present. The entries are selected from all countries of Europe, from Ireland in the west to Russia in the east and from Finland in the north to Greece in the south. Written by specialists in the labor history of the subject countries, the biographies focus on presenting basic factual information, leaving interpretation and argument to more detailed studies. Entries are arranged alphabetically, irrespective of the country of origin, emphasizing the Europeanness of the project in an era when barriers between European states are being rapidly demolished. A state-by-state breakdown of the entries provides an additional source of information. Labor is defined broadly to include trade unions, political parties, cooperatives, and anarcho-syndicalist groups, but not so broadly as to include state-controlled bodies that lack democratic procedures. A selective, but substantial bibliography provides a guide to further reading. Extensive cross-referencing and a substantial index illustrate the complex links, both intellectual and practical, between labor leaders of different states and regions.

Volume XI of the Dictionary of Labour Biography maintains the strengths of earlier contributions to this well established and authoritative series. It incorporates many scholarly and original studies of Labor movement figures from a variety of periods and backgrounds together with special notes on related and neglected topics. Each entry is accompanied by a thorough bibliography and incorporates the most recent historical scholarship in the field.

I ordered this book on a whim, after having heard some selections from the 1961 original cast recording. I had seen the movie version, and enjoyed it thoroughly.

The book is well written, and funny. It is worth reading just for the historical perspective it brings to dealing with the business community. But, this is one of those times when I thought that I was better off watching the DVD, because there just isn't that much substance to the book.

The book was written for a different time, but I think the original movie version better makes the transition to the present day.

Frank Loesser's score for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is utterly charming. The songs are all wonderful. This volume is the piano/vocal score, which gives you every note of the score (in a piano reduction) for your reading and playing pleasure. Enjoy!

I was driving myself crazy trying to find sheet music for this show after having performed as "Rosemary" in my high school version - both of Rosemary's songs are excellent for mezzos/altos to use in auditions. I finally bought this music book out of desperation, and you can imagine that I was ecstatic to find that the sheet music has the entire piano part. Plus, all the songs are actually in the correct keys (I absolutely HATE it when people transcribe songs for books/music collections). All the songs from the show are here - it's worth the price!

After I appeared in H2S, I wanted to find a piano/vocal to play the music at home. I never could have dreamed that I'd get the actual piano score from the show complete with scene change music, dance sequence music, and a piano part that really gives you the sound of the full orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars H2$ Is An Incredible Show.......2001-12-24

The musical score for How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying (H2$) is great. I can't imagine a better storyline or score. Among the songs in H2$, specail attention should be paid to Paris Original, Coffee Break, and Brotherhood of Man. Strength in these areas can really make or break any production of this show. I believe that in addition to the 1961 recording, the 1995 recording is also a valuable tool for gaining insight as to how many of the songs can/should be performed. Even though the 1995 recording does not follow the original score exactly, it is my preference. I hope that you can succeed with SUCCEED. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for school productions! (click for advice).......1999-07-15

First, the score itself: well, what can I say? It's a standard score, printed clearly on good paper, which has a slight tendency to fall out from the binding when put to hard use, so I recommend hole-punching the whole thing and putting it into a binder before beginning a production. Unlike a lot of piano scores being written these days (such as, say, Crazy For You,) this one is actually playable by one person. There are nine chorus numbers, of which only four are of any difficulty at all: "Coffee Break," "A Secretary Is Not A Toy," and "Brotherhood of Man" are the production numbers, "Cinderella, Darling" is the women's number with little dancing. The recording which is truest to the score and (probably) the composer's intentions is the 1961 version which was recorded only 8 days after the production first opened. This recording also gives insight into how Finch (the main character) was conceived-- much more brash, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed (for a Chipmunk!) than the Matthew Broderick revival recording, which attempts to make this a 1990's musical, which it is not and was never meant to be. Compare, for instance, the score and '61 recording of Miss Jones in "Brotherhood of Man" with the 1995 version. The voice and music are completely different, and so, consequently, is the character. If you are someone involved in a production, or just someone who loves this show, feel free to let me know. I'm the vocal director of Vanderbilt University's musical program, and we're putting it on in spring of 2000. Feel free to write me and tell me why I'm right or wrong about this musical (which I've so far studied but not actually produced).

                                1 out of 5 stars VOCAL SCORE.......2005-06-27

This product is NOT the vocal score to the show. It is in fact the vocal "selections." The picture for the search is the SCORE, but once you look at the "closeup" it is of the selections...make sure you read everything before buying an item, I almost bought this before realizing it was not what was being advertised.

                                1 out of 5 stars Unhappy!.......2004-04-29

Your detail on this merchandise left a lot to be desired. These are not the complete lyrics as one would expect to receive. Even the cover is different from the one I originally ordered. I strongly disagree with you when you say that my return is not the result of your error. You should have made it clear that the book did not contain the entire song.

2 out of 5 stars Beware misleading description!.......2003-01-27

This is a Vocal Selections book, not the Vocal Score (as is clear from the large photo of the cover).

5 out of 5 stars Saw the movie, the songs are great!.......1999-05-26

I was planning on getting this book for an audition at a local theater company. The songs are so fun and energetic that when I was looking for music, I knew that this book had the music that would work for me.
