Customer Reviews:
Read this, and you will be prepared.......2006-12-01
This is one of the better guides on interview questions that I have seen. The book is very large, and filled with a large variety of questions that an interviewer might ask. The book has general questions that would be asked in any interview, and then it has sections for specific careers. Adams also spends a great deal of time talking about interview preparation, what to do if your nervous in an interview, along with many other ideas for interviewing and its preparation.
One selling point I feel this book has over other similar books, it that after the question, it explains the motivation for the question, and then gives suggestions for solid answers. Going through this book, should leave you well prepared and you should not be caught off guard with questions that can be asked. The book also covers illegal questions that employeers may ask. While sometimes they ask out of ignorance of the law, Adams suggests very tactful ways to handle these answers.
His book also gives you tips and guidelines on follow up letters, interview techniques, and much more. This book really delivers on making sure that you are prepared for a job interview. He gives so many sample questions that you will not be surprised when questions are asked. I feel this book is well worth the time spent reading
Book Description
The first oral history centering on the unique experiences of black porters and railroad attendants during the railroad's heyday is by turns dramatic, inspiring, comic, and heartwrenching. First person accounts document both the glamour of the railroad era and the bitter realities of being a black worker on a white railroad.
Customer Reviews:
Good history of Pullman from its Workers' Point of View.......1998-08-24
This is a great book to read if you want to know what it was like to work for The Pullman Co. The biggest problem with the book is that it is virtually one-sided. Mr. Perata doesn't seem to include the positive side of The Pullman Co., nor has he included the historical perspective of the times and attitudes of the general populace during the period he explores.
I had two close friends who worked for Pullman. One was a black former Pullman Porter. The other was a white Pullman employee who had worked his way up the system from the entry jobs to conductor and finallly a Pullman General Manager. Far from having the "plantation mentality" Mr. Perata speaks of, his concerns were that the level of service did not diminish AND that the employees were being treated fairly and with respect.
The black person worked for me in an executive compacity, so he need not have been less than candid. He told me stories of both his positive and negative experiences. Of course, there was the occassional ornery Conductor or supervisor, but almost all his comments about Pullman were positive. In fact he was insistant that the traditions of The Pullman Company be carried on and used on Amtrak.
A bittersweet collection that's well worth reading.......1997-10-16
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this book, but quickly became caught up in the stories and work experiences of these men. Many people don't know what train travel was like in the days before Amtrak and this will be an eye-opening book for them. For those of us who do recall Pullman travel, and the people (many of them friends) who worked the cars, this book will bring back meny memories. Readers should be aware that that this collection of oral histories is not a railfan's book or a wallow in nostalgia. These men tell what it was like not only to work for the Pullman Company, but also what life was like for them away from the trains. Parts of the book are funny, and others are heartbreaking, but most work is that way. The only thing that kept the book from receiving a "10" rating was that it could have used some car diagrams (floor plans) to give the novice an idea of the interior layout of the cars described in the text.
Interviews bring a bygone era to life for the reader!.......1996-08-01
The interviews of the men that built such a style of travel are conducted and written in such brilliance that you can almost smell the starch in their white jackets! A brilliant method of capturing the true life emotions of an almost invisibale servant who afforded the rail traveler a luxury that this country will never again know. Mr. Perata has imortalized those fine men in print, a much needed documentation of a bygone mode of travel and the truth behind it. Those Pullman Blues should be on every bookshelf in America
True to history, an outstanding reflection on an era of time.......1996-08-01
David Perata has captured the essence of an era of time when the black man was presented to the public in such an extrordinary way, yet was treated by the Pullman Comapany as nothing more that an endentured servant.
The book has a definate place in American history, and will become significant documentation of an era of travel and national growth that will be valued for years to come. A must read! Coretta Scott King should be proud of this endorsement!

Book Description
This handy reference guide to modern '74'- series and '4000'- series digital ICs presents 620 useful and carefully selected circuits, diagrams, graphs and tables, supported by informative text and captions. Detailed descriptions of and practical applications information on more than 185 TTL and CMOS ICs are provided.
This wealth of information is clearly and logically arranged so that specific information can be quickly and easily located. Fifteen chapters cover from IC basics and TTL and CMOS principles, to the practical circuitry of logic ICs, waveform generators and multiplexers. While aimed at practical design engineers and technicians, this pocket book will also be of use to amateurs and students of electronics. The subject is dealt with in a readable and essentially non-mathematical manner, with the emphasis on practical 'user' information and circuitry.
Customer Reviews:
FORMAT COULD BE BETTER, NOT AS GOOD AS THE OTHERS.......2006-03-05
I purchased the 'Linear IC ' Pocket Book and the 'Passive & Discrete' Circuit Pocket Book by Mr. Marston in this series which are very good. This, pocketbook edition is difficult to read with odd formatting. The paper used is an off white/yellow with black ink. The margins are excessively wide approximately 1.5 inches side to side and top to bottem which lends itself to smaller than necessary type size. I find it difficult to read for any length of time. Some of the print of the diagrams appear to bleed into the paper. It almost looks like the publisher was planning to place this text into a smaller physically sized book but changed their minds. This edition is from 1996 so it is a little dated. I purchased the 'Modern CMOS' Circuits Manual which is easier on the eyes with a larger format.

Book Description
Weaving together extensive archival material with a fresh interpretation, this work examines the experiences of women workers in the cotton and small metals industries demonstrating how ideas of womanhood often clashed with the harsh realities of the working-class life that forced women into such unfeminine trades.

Book Description
A mention of flatulence might conjure up images of bratty high school boys or lowbrow comics. But one of the most eloquent - and least expected - commentators on the subject is Benjamin Franklin. The writings in Fart Proudly reveal the rogue who lived peaceably within the philosopher and statesman. Included are "The Letter to a Royal Academy"; "On Choosing a Mistress"; "Rules on Making Oneself Disagreeable"; and other jibes. Franklin's irrepressible wit found an outlet in perpetrating hoaxes, attacking marriage and other sacred cows, and skewering the English Parliament. Reminding us of the humorous, irreverent side of this American icon, these essays endure as both hilarious satire and a timely reminder of the importance of a free press.
Customer Reviews:
An iteresting read.......2007-09-25
I have to say that I rather enjoyed reading Franklin's lesser known works/letters. At one point I was even chuckling out loud.
However the book was ruined at the end by the editor's own political agenda. He assumes to many things and discredits his own opinion about the freedom of speech (if it is true that no one is allowed to speak their mind or are afraid - how is it that you got published).
My recommendation is to rip out that section of the book and enjoy what a gifted writer and thinker has to say - Ben Franklin
Great for all fans of Ben Franklin.......2007-02-11
The last chapter is the best one and the only one that at all references the title (fortunately). Some of this is better for people who already have some background in the period. I would not recommend this book for anybody who does not have an interest in the history and politics of the era of the American Revolution. If you love Ben Franklin, as I do, then this book is a must-read.
Franklin is my new hero, but I wish the editor would shut his trap.......2006-12-29
Benjamin Franklin, as I knew him (mostly from elementary school TV cartoons), was a busy old man who spent his time inventing stoves and bifocals, getting electrocuted by lightning, writing newspapers, and admonishing us to work hard and "unite or die".
Franklin, it turns out, was also a brilliant humorist and satirist. The opening essay of "Fart Proudly", suggesting the Royal Academy of Brussels drop their efforts on cute mathematical theorems and focus instead on finding ways to make farts smell pleasant, is a riot. Franklin tops it later in his essay "On Choosing a Mistress", which expands upon the merits of older women ("there is no hazard of Children, which irregularly produced may be attended with much Inconvenience." "covering all above with a Basket, and regarding only what is below the Girdle, it is impossible of two Women to know an old one from a young one. And as in the dark all Cats are grey, the Pleasure or corporal Enjoyment with an old Woman is at least equal, and frequently superior, every Knack being by Practice capable of improvement.")
Once you get used to the style, the book goes very quickly, and you can read it in an afternoon easily. And, in addition to being a deep repository of wit, the book is also a fun history lesson, as through a variety of Franklin's satirical essays on politics ("Three Fables", "Rules by Which A Great Empire May Be Reduced to a Small One", "Transporting Rattlesnakes") you can see the evolution of Franklin's grievances with Britain from a perspective far more entertaining than a history text.
My only complaint is that Japiske, the editor, is an ignoramus, and exactly the kind of gentleman Franklin would have gone out of his way to mock mercilessly in print.
Wicked! .......2006-03-09
This book is a terrific compilation of Ben's lesser known writings. Reading this, I have to say - if I could invite any one person to dinner, past, present or future, it would be Benjamin Franklin. He's smart, funny, rebellious, irreverent, and eloquent.
Every schoolteacher in every elementary school history classroom across America - or the world - should have multiple copies of this book freely available at all times. There's a reason Ben was a hero in other countries besides the states.
That said, the preface sucked. Using Ben to push your own politics? Get over it. I agree, but I dislike being told what to think.
So - definitely buy the book, definitely skip the preface, definitely laugh your musical behind off.
The footnotes your history book skipped........2004-12-03
Bland history makes great men look great. Bad history makes great men look bad. This makes a great man look great being a 'bad boy' - a tasty bit of irony and accuracy.
Franklin was one of the first printers in the US - he was a material supporter of freedom of the press, and a severe critic of irresponsible press. He was a statesman and clown, when clowning made his point the best way. He was a politician, scientist, and bawd - how else to take in so much of the human condition?
This collection captures some of the contradictions that comprised Benjamin Frnaklin. Maybe it takes some of the sheen off the gold star that history dumped on him, but it adds toughness and flexibility to the steel that he showed as diplomat. Satire is a voice, and this short book shows a few octaves of his.
I have to admit that poor teachers put me quite off American history. Books like this get me reading history again. It shows Franklin the patriot and firebrand defending the mothers without husbands and deflating the learned academies of Europe. This is short but sweet, and even his choices of words show me a lot about how modern English is used.

Book Description
Franklin’s
Autobiography is one of the most famous works in American literature. He started it as a private collection of anecdotes for his son, but soon it was transformed into a work of history, both personal and national, revealing Franklin as the man who, as Herman Melville said, possessed “deep worldly wisdom and polished Italian tact, gleaming under an air of Arcadian unaffectedness.

Poor Richard's Almanack.......2007-09-30
Love this book. I am a fan of Benjamin Franklin. He is so witty and thoughtful. I also like Henry David Thoreau.
Ben's wisdom.......2007-03-23
Ben's wisdom (or interpretation) are unmistakeable. Wonderful to look at inside and out.
Ben. Franklin humor.......2007-02-21
Relatively short book filled with wit and brief advice (comments) on a variety of topics, definately a lighter and easier style than the autobiography and with more humor.
PoorRichards Almanack.......2007-02-13
Timeless. I read at least a page a day and when I get to the end, start again.
American Classic Must Read for All.......2007-02-11
Benjamin Franklin was a genius and a Renaissance Man. All of these sayings are wise and many are funny. I think this should be required reading for everyone in junior high or high school.

Customer Reviews:
Benjamin Franklin's Works.......2007-08-26
Densely-packed with primary Franklin sources. Physically hefty. Fairly transparent index, but could be somewhat more plain-spoken. Franklin might not have approved. Takes the average reader far beyond the kite-and-key story and the Franklin sexual escapades stories into the brain of a genius. Book is a best buy regardless of price.
A great volume of a great man for your shelf on the founding.......2005-05-07
Benjamin Franklin is one of the great icons of the American Founding. He is truly one of the essential men who built our nation and deserves every praise we can heap on him. When we see images of the founders, they are all shown as old men, not how old they were in 1776. Franklin was really a generation older than most of the firebrands who led the Revolution. He was seventy when he signed the Declaration of Independence (John Adams was 41, George Washington 44, and Thomas Jefferson 33 on July 4, 1776) and eighty-one when he signed our Constitution as a member of the delegation from Pennsylvania. He was an amazing man. He was a successful printer, inventor, philanthropist, revolutionary, diplomat, and all around student of the world.
This fine volume from the wonderful Library of America is a collection of this great man's writings. From early articles in his brother's newspaper, to the Preface and Maxims of the Poor Richard's Almanac, essays, speeches, letters, the FOUR parts of his autobiography, and much else. You will read about his inventing the two-part spectacles and see his own diagram of his bi-focals, his views on slavery, why paper money was needed to help enliven commerce and the dangers of too much of it, his views on religion, his speech before the Constitutional Convention of the dangers of paying representatives at Congress, and so much more that is fundamental to our founding and all of it is amazingly interesting.
This book is interesting to dip into and read just those portions that interest you, as well as reading its more than 1,500 pages front to back. It has great notes on the text that provide contextual and translation help as well as sources, a most interesting chronology of Franklin's long and productive life, and an index.
This certainly is a must have for your shelf on the history of America's Founding.
Too Long Overlooked.......2003-08-31
This collection of Franklin's writing display his quick mind, mathematical gifts, great sense of humor, detachment in crisis, and the razor-sharp diplomatic mind which did more than supposed for the American cause (more so than than Adams and others thought). An American genius and a true seer of note. A book to be enjoyed again and again.
small book for the price.......2003-06-10
The contents are wonderful. Some are funny and yet they are true! All can be applied in today's world! Yet, the cost is bigger than the book itself! It is a small 'coffee table' book that should be at a cheaper price.
Best Modern Compilation of Franklin's Writings.......2001-03-31
The Library of America should be commended for preserving the works of Benjamin Franklin. This is the finest compilation of Franklin's writings still in print.
The book is organized and presented in chronological order. The first section contains Franklin's writings between 1722-1726. This section contains the famous "Silence Dogood" works. The second section consists of writings between 1726-1757. This section contains the "Busy Body" pieces and the writings from the Philadelphia Gazette, amongst other works. The third section consists of writings which date between 1757-1775. The fourth section consists of writings between 1776-1785. The fifth section consists of writings between 1785-1790. And the final two sections are "Poor Richard's Almanack" and "The Autobiography."
Moreover, the sections contain personal letters between Franklin and other notable men such as David Hume, Lord Kames, John Pringle, Benjamin Rush, etc. Also, religious writings, philosophy, political writings and the like are present in this single volume. In fact, there is about 1500 pages of just Franklin's writings. Additionally, in the back of the book, there is a very detailed chronology of Franklin's life describing notable things which occurred between his birth and death.
This is a great text for those who are wanting a very detailed volume of Franklin's writings. However, it is also a great compilation for those who simply want to sit down and get a sample of the works of Franklin to find out what type of man he was, what he believed, what he taught, his sense of humor and the like.
This book has been one of the best investments that I have made in my collection of American Revolutionary (Founders) history. I highly recommend this work.

Book Description
Humor is sometimes a serious business, especially the humor of Benjamin Franklin, a master at revealing the human condition through comedy. For the country's bicentennial, Reader's Digest named Franklin "Man of the Year" for embodying the characteristics we admire most about ourselves as Americanshumor, irony, energy, and fresh insight.
Recreating Franklin's words in the way that his contemporaries would have read and understood them, Paul M. Zall chronicles Franklin's use (and abuse) of humor for commercial, diplomatic, and political purposes. Dedicated to the uniquely appealing and enduring humor of Benjamin Franklin, Zall lovingly samples Franklin's apologues on the necessity of living reasonably even when life's circumstances may seem absurd.
