5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Teams.......2004-09-03

Glenn Parker's book is a must-read for individuals and organizations that have cross-functional teams or are considering implementing them. Practical advice and actual examples of successful cross-functional teams make this book an easy and enjoyable read. I highly recommend this book to those who are looking to improve organizational effectiveness through cross-functional teams.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE BOOK FOR DEVELOPING TEAMS........2003-03-01

This book provides practical and helpful approaches to establishing cross-functional teams. The information provided by the author, Glenn Parker, is very useful for teams comprised of any discipline and in any industry. I have utilized many of the techniques and have seen results! I was able to get my teams up and running more quickly, we achieved results, and people seemed to have more fun because we functioned well together. I strongly recommend this book for team leaders and team members.

4 out of 5 stars A Help in Team Building.......2001-01-11

          G. Parker knows all about developing workplace team work. Not only is he a team work consultant, he is very familar with the literature and research on team work. As most of us know, many consultants do not bother to read the literature on the topic they profess to be an expert on. Cross Functional Teams is informative and constructive, largely because of Parker's knowledge of the field. Parker's concept of Cross Functional Teasm, or teams link people from different parts of an organization, distinquishes the book from the other books on team work.

          Book Description

Cross-functional teams, that is, teams comprised of members from different departments, are an essential element in developing a world class organization. Yet anyone who has tried to build effective cross-functional teams knows that they often fade away; they lack the tools, training, and motivation that would enable them to tackle more challenging tasks.

In 40 Tools for Cross-Functional Teams: Building Synergy for Breakthrough Creativity, Walter Michalski cuts through the tangled thicket of team literature to give us a focused and comprehensive guide to building and sustaining cross-functional teams. This book will teach you everything you need to know about cross-functional teams. The author provides 40 carefully selected tools arranged in eight process stages, including getting cross-functional teams up and running, developing synergy/consensus, creatively solving problems, and recognizing and rewarding teams.

An engaging book with clear illustrations, 40 Tools for Cross-Functional Teams is based on the same user friendly design of the Tool Navigator's Master Guide for Teams. Each tool is presented in a two or three page spread describing the tool, its function, method for implementation, and example of the tool in use. These 40 tools will assist any company in the creation of cross-functional teams to compete in today's team based corporate environment.

          Included are discussions of:

2 out of 5 stars Very narrow introduction to cross-functional teams.......2007-09-29

The "basics of cross-functional teams" is a very small book which introduces the concept of cross-functional teams. However the introduction is very narrow and it seems to mainly focus on cross-functional teams which are involved in quality improvement and certification projects like ISO9001.

The book feels fairly traditional-management oriented and it doesn't discuss very much about the changes in culture, the changes in organization and how a cross-functional team would work themselves. It doesn't provide any references, stories or research on cross-functional teams.

The book just provides a very short overview of project/team work and touches on some important points like values, mission, conflict etc; but then doesn't dive in it very deep.

I would not recommend this book.

                        Description:
Managing the interface between R&D and marketing is a critical element of successful new product development programs. The purpose of this research is twofold. First, we develop testable hypotheses from a theoretical model of cross-functional team management in the product innovation process based on the seminal work of Gupta, Raj, and Wilemon. We test the hypotheses using data collected from 376 U.S., 292 Chinese, and 279 Japanese firms. Second, we uncover and highlight similarities and differences in cross-functional involvement between marketing and R&D in the product innovation process across these three countries. The results generally provide overall support for the model and reveal some surprising cross-national differences. d R&D in the product innovation process across these three countries. The results generally provide overall support for the model and reveal some surprising cross-national differences.
