5 out of 5 stars One of the best type books out there, in layman's terms.......2007-01-11

Sandra Krebs Hirsh and Jean Kummerow have written an excellent introduction to personality type which not only helps the reader identify his or her own personality type, but provides detailed descriptions of each type including organizing style, preferred occupations and work settings.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Introduction to Temperaments and Personality Types.......2004-09-06

In "LifeTypes," Hirsh & Kummerow provide a well laid-out and thoroughly readable introduction to psychological temperaments and personality types, based on the popular Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The book is divided into two main sections.

The first part teaches the reader about the basic Jungian preferences-- extraversion/introversion, sensing/intuition, thinking/feeling and judging/perceiving. Each is explained in terms of general characteristics as well as specifics on how they influence communication, work, relationships, careers and more. The explanations are straightforward, but more than adequate to help readers determine their preferences, and thus their four-letter personality type.

Part two offers detailed descriptions of the 16 different personality types. Each is described in terms of their typical directions in life, followed by learning styles, work choices (including settings, organizing style and typical occupations), leadership style, leisure time choices, relationship style and finally a section outlining some potential "trouble spots" and places each type might get "stuck."

Final thoughts: Recommended (9 out of 10 possible bookmarks). Whereas it lacks the depth of research and insight offered by experts like David Keirsey ("Please Understand Me"), it is also far easier to read, and thus makes an excellent beginning book for those interested in personality types.

    Thanks for reading!

5 out of 5 stars One of my three faves on this topic.......2001-08-08

I loved this book. It was one of the first I ever read on typology and Myers-Briggs. The writing style is easy without being condescending. The descriptions of the different types were really useful. I totally recognized myself. Best of all, there was no judgement of readers for being who they are. The book showed me how to embrace my weaknesses as well as my strengths. Highly reccommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Clearest Description of Temperament You'll Find.......2000-06-05

This book describes the ways in which people most naturally relate to each other and the world. It is based on the Myers-Briggs dimensions and is the most useful, easiest to read, and clearest description of these preferences I've ever seen. Even if you are not at all familiar with the Myers-Briggs, you will learn an enourmous amount about yourself and everyone you come into contact with in this very readable book. It will also be simple to figure out how to use this information to make it easier to relate effectively at home and at work. I'm a psychologist and this may be the most useful book I've ever found.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction.......1998-07-01

I found this book an eye-opener - it helped me understand the results of the Myers Briggs assessment and to understand how differently different people approach life. I have been reassessing my interactions with family, friends and colleagues ever since. It is written in an easy style, positive and helpful. I soon went looking for more on type theory and I am very glad I read this first, rather than Keirsey's more arrogant work.

    Product Description

The author applies a no-nonsense approach to dieting, exercising, disease treating, and other aspects of everyday life. Our looks, longevity, as well as our physical and mental conditions result from the way we eat, breathe, and take care of all our physical and psychological needs. The question is not limited to nutrition only, as is the case of dieting programs.

I will certainly keep this book handy and use it frequently treating myself and my family. It's a book I've been waiting for a long time to read. Priceless information. Simple. Easy to follow. And the best thing of all, it costs you almost nothing! As one of the readers noted, this book can possibly make dieting industry die out, and many pharmaceutical companies with raised by them doctors would be out of business, if only people allowed themselves be wise enough to use very simple advice from this book. My mother, who is RN, almost never turned to prescription medications to treat my illnesses, on the contrary, many of her treatments were from holistic medicine, and some of them I find in this book. Wonderful book, amazing, wise! Yes, I can't agree with part on reading character by eye colour and horoscope, but let it be a fun reading and not a scientific statement. Beside that, this book is extremely valuable.

If you are proactive in maintaining your health this book is absolutley for you along with Cure the Incurable. If you are not proactive I would not suggest this book for you

Who wants to live 150 years???....not me, but, that is not the point. The point is to show us how our body functions and the common sense principles to our health...its call biology, plain and simple

My daughter has been going to various doctors for IBS, bloating, pre-diabetic issues, headaches, irritabilty, etc.

I do understand that our body is one biological system and that it all works together, but, many people do not believe that, especially my daughter

Well, needless to say, I gave this book to her to read and understand....
and finally a light bulb went on
She found out that she had human parasites (almost all of us have them) which no doctor that she went to checked on that

When you read this book, you should leave with a concept of how the body works and what it needs...

Read it as it might not only help you but someone close to you

5 out of 5 stars Simple, Sensible and Extremely Effective.......2007-06-02

This is the ultimate holistic living guide. From correct breathing, through taking care of your back, to proper food combination, the author provides natural recipes for everyday living. The words are direct, awakening and motivating, causing you to start taking care of yourself.

Very important for me was chapter six - Complete Body Cleansing. The liver cleansing is really very rejuvenating. You have to prepare for the procedure a few days earlier by appropriately changing your diet. The liver cleansing itself takes two full days of total concentration on your own body. It is not pleasant but it is very rewarding. After it was over I felt like a newborn. Somehow it also pushed me to improve my eating habits.

Also very good is the chapter about obesity. Without complicating the matter, like many other authors tend to do, the author very effectively deals with the subject in one short chapter. He explains the reasons behind ineffectiveness of most popular dieting programs and suggests simple ways for dealing with the most common habits that lead us to gaining weight. PAINLESS AND EFFECTIVE!

Very helpful is also the chart on proper food combination. Applying the simple rules from the chart after my liver cleansing keeps me feel youthful and energetic, and I keep losing weight week after week.

No one before has motivated me so well. Just follow the simple advice for a month or two and you will see the difference. You will feel better and you will look better. What else do you need?

Another great book that I highly recommend for all those wanting to live healthy life and stay away from prescription drugs is Prescription for Nutritional Healing.

1 out of 5 stars Sometimes you just have to laugh.......2007-04-08

How the author manages to delete all the negative reviews so quickly month after month is quite impressive. I remember writing a negative review a couple of years ago. Actually I wrote two and both disappeared. Now I return and the same battle is waging. For info on this guy check out the discussion section below.

5 out of 5 stars Your health and wellbeing are in your own hands.......2007-02-10

I am usually very skeptical about various claims that can be found in the books written by many "self-healers" and other gurus. The author however, does not over-promise in any chapter of his book, in spite of its catchy title.

It is a good compilation of safe-and-sound recommendations for longevity and healthy living. I did smile at some of them (walking bare footed, etc.) but even if I do not believe in their direct benefits, they might still bring about good results for those who do believe (placebo effect). In any case, none of the recommendations can in any way be harmful as most of the remedies contain products used by many of us on a daily basis.

Other advice, like proper food combination, periodic fasting, taking hot and cold baths, using sauna, drinking pure mineral water, taking daily walks, etc, are just common sense and indeed very beneficial for our mental and physical conditions. By the way, the author clearly states that he is not a medical doctor himself but that he just compiled the wisdom of many nations - from Europe, via Tibet, to old China. As a result, some of the ingredients suggested in certain remedies can be difficult to obtain in North America. For example kefir. It is a dairy product, with well known health benefits, that is very popular in Europe but hardly ever obtainable in the US, except for specialty organic food shops. [...]

There are a few Apendices at the end of the book. Some of them are too much on the side of "New Age" and does not really fit my analitical mind. However it might be of some interest for those who like to believe in astrology, Horoscope etc. I think it is fine to read it as an interesting trivia, especially since this is presented in the Apendices -- clearly outside of the main body of the book.

The author was educated as a biologist and chemist, but he devoted his life to studying human body and he is a well known authority on healthy living documented by the fact the he was the head of Center of Health Sciences in Moscow. I do believe that this book will be very beneficial for many people, especially for those jumping from one fad diet to another. As the author rightly pointed out - your health and wellbeing are in your own hands.

Many methods and remedies suggested by the author are indeed valuable and effective. They are presented for the reader to explore. Please use them wisely! On the scale of 0 to 10 I give the book 9 points. Highly recommended reading!

        Book Description

Wendy Cook's fascination with nutrition began during her war-time childhood. In the midst of deprivation and food-rationing, the rich abundance of her mother's organic garden made a profound impression. In her twenties, married to Peter Cook, she discovered the artistic and magical effects that food could have in creating a convivial atmosphere. During this period she cooked for many well-known names, including John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Dudley Moore, Peter Ustinov and Allan Bennett. But it was only later, through her daughter falling ill, that she came to study and understand deeper aspects of nutrition, and in particular the effects of different foods on human health and consciousness.

In Foodwise Wendy Cook presents a remarkable cornucopia of challenging ideas, advice and commentary, informed by the seminal work of the scientist Rudolf Steiner. She begins the volume with biographical glimpses relating to her experience of food and how it has influenced her life. She then presents an extraordinary perspective on the journey of human evolution, relating it to changes in consciousness and the consumption of different foods. In the following section she considers the importance of agricultural methods, the nature of the human being, the significance of grasses and grains, the mystery of human digestion, and the question of vegetarianism. In the next section she analyses the 'building blocks' of nutrition, looking in some detail at the nutritional (or otherwise) qualities of many foodstuffs, including carbohydrates, minerals, fats and oils, milk and dairy products, herbs and spices, salt and sweeteners, stimulants, legumes, the nightshade family, bread, water, and dietary supplements. She ends with practical tips on cooking, planning menus, children's food, sharing meals, and some mouth-watering recipes.

Foodwise presents a treasure of wisdom and experience for anybody with a concern for the content of the food they eat or a desire to discover more about the physical, soul and spiritual aspects of nutrition.

This book has excellent information for anyone who is just diagnosed with asthma. If you have been living with asthma for awhile and have been active in the management of your asthma, you may find that there is very little "new" information contained in the book. You will find that the book contains a good description of the various treatments that may be prescribed by your doctor. Be that as it may, the book continues to be a good resource for anyone with asthma.

After a diagnosis of COPD and/or asthma, I did what I always do. I set out to learn as much as possible. This is a wonderful, comprehensive and hopeful book. I have checked much of the info with my pulmonary MD and he too was most impressed and is suggesting it to patients. It is written in understandable terms, with a fine resources section. I learned a lot, and felt a bit more in control of this disease. Because if you give in, it will "git ya". Well done!

Couldn't breathe. Bought this book. Showed my doctor who changed all my medications. That was six months ago. TODAY? I BREATHE so well that I'm training for the NY marathon. It's hard for me to believe that getting the RIGHT medication can be crucial for allergy and asthma. But I'm a believer.

I have had allergies since birth--and never have felt good until I did the things written in this book. An excellent book on why allergies happen and what you can do--today--to stop them. I took the book to my doctor and she changed my medication to include steroid nasal inhalers. This helped me go through two pollen seasons without missing any work. SUPERB!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, easy-to-understand book on breathing problems.......1999-03-10

I have sinusitis and asthma, and my children have the same. We have suffered for too many years according to this book. It enlightened me to learn that my sinus drainage actually triggers asthma--thus, I have learned to stay on top of sinus infections and post nasal drip--to END ASTHMA. It works. Dr. Smolley is brilliant. The book is a must read for any parent or person with allergies, asthma, sinusitis or other lung disease. Read it--and do what he says--it will change your life the way it has ours.

              Book Description

In this new book, an untold story emerges as Microsoft insiders talk: for the first time, insiders tell their stories in their own words. Karin Carter, 14-year veteran of the company, shares her view of life at Microsoft along with first-person stories from 18 co-workers. Meet the real people behind the hype through their thoughtful essays, funny stories, and surprising anecdotes. Current and former employees from the trenches, not the executive suites, give their perspectives on their own experiences, the industry, competitors, and the Department of Justice pursuit of Microsoft. Detail by detail, they paint a picture of their slice of Microsoft. Their stories range from serious to surprising. Read about the programmer who married a woman he met in a bar and eleven months later was cleaned out, the woman who walked away from a fortune, the secretary who worked her way into management and retired at 34, and tales from the card counting team that played blackjack in Las Vegas. Carter says, "Microsoft was my head-spinning world for fourteen years. I landed there by chance and I stayed there because it was an adventure—incredible and hard and frustrating and exciting. I moved to Seattle with very little: my clothes and a tiny old blue car with one orange door. I had to puff up my résumé with every extra skill I could think of. I had one friend in Seattle. Now, when I look in the mirror, I see a person shaped by Microsoft. And Microsoft was shaped by us."

4 out of 5 stars A glimpse into the psychology and culture of Microsoft.......2005-06-10

While Microsoft enjoys a great reputation as an industry leader in its field, and while its business success has never been in question, there are all kinds of stories about what it is like to work there. This book gives the reader an inside look at what is was like as the company was getting started. This is important to note because most of these depictions are centered on the early days of the company, long before it became the large organization it is today.

The book broken into chapters centered on each of the 19 people. Each chapter introduces the particular individual and provides a bit of information on their background. The individuals themselves have each written an essay on their time at the company, and particular insights they have.

What is fascinating is that the perspectives are all different, and even though some common themes emerge, each person was impacted in a different way by their experiences. As a result the essays themselves are a joy to read, and are more like a conversation or a series of relatable observations, than a detailed analysis.

Some are quite funny. One individual in particular had me laughing so hard with his dry humor than I nearly fell off the exercise equipment I was working on while reading. Some are sad, some a bit bitter, and one or two actually seem to regard the experience as life changing in a much broader sense than merely a career.

The most common theme is money, in particular how the stock options made them rich, or didn't. It is profound to read about the impact this had on their lives. Some seem grateful, others give a feeling of entitlement, and others seem genuinely haunted by what could have been. So powerful was the wealth that was created, that most who did well discuss in equal balance the security and flexibility it gives them in their lives, and the isolation that is created with family and friends due to their wealth. It seems most have some difficulty in reconciling the wealth they amassed with the correlated effort and career opportunity.

Overall, while I'm sure the culture of the company is really not captured perfectly by any of them, the reader is nonetheless able to see some transcending themes emerge from all of the stories. This is a fascinating book from a psychology standpoint, as well as a brief, but powerful, inside look into a legendary company culture.

5 out of 5 stars Insiders Insights to Microsoft.......2003-07-26

As an ex-Microsoft employee I have read almost every book published about the company by both Microsoft people and external observers. This is the one I recommend to others who want to understand what it was like at Microsoft in the early years. This book is unique in that it does not try to "teach" you how Microsoft works, but rather it allows individuals who were there tell their unique stories to illustrate what it was like inside one of the fastest growing high-tech companies. Common experiences like how strange it was not having to beg for supplies or even ask permission to do something you thought needed to be done ("just exercise good judgement") ring true, as do the experiences of coming to grips with a growing company and balancing one's work and family time. Microsoft may not be like this today, but it accurately portrays the experiences in the early years through the first successful launch of Windows and Windows becoming a product that most of us use today. Remember these are the tales of people who had to explain to others that they worked for a small company in the Pacific Northwest that wrote software -- for Microsoft was not always the brand it is today.

5 out of 5 stars Absorbing, entertaining look at Microsoft from the trenches.......2003-05-09

I read this book because a friend of a friend of a friend is one of the "insiders," and I thought it would be fun to see if I could recognize his story. I didn't have any specific expectations about the book as a whole - and I was surprised to find myself riveted from early on. These people tell their stories in a variety of ways, and they all had different experiences at Microsoft and came away with different perspectives - but they all tell the same very human tale of making hard choices, recognizing opportunity, dealing with disappointment, growing up, clarifying values, etc. The fact that the context is Microsoft definitely adds an interesting dimension to the stories, but this is more of a generic character study of smart young people struggling with the big questions of life (like money - lots and lots of money) than anything really specific to Microsoft. Also, I have to say that they're not all (at least from their stories here) likeable people - but that just adds to the realism of the book as a whole. This is a fascinating book!

              5 out of 5 stars I couldn't Put it Down.......2003-05-02

Everyone knows that the culture and success of Microsoft is the stuff legends are made of. This book does an excellent job of looking under the surface of this technology giant to learn what really goes on behind the scenes. There are many books about Bill Gates out there, but this one focuses on the individuals who went for a roller coaster ride that not only changed their lives, but the world. For some it was like winning the lottery, and it's interesting to see how different people viewed and managed their sudden fortune. Everybody has a different experience, some are bitter and some enamored but I found all the stories very interesting and even entertaining. Carter did a great job of pulling in a mix of people and capturing the real story behind the success of Microsoft.
