Book Description
Integrated circuit technology is widely used for the full integration of electronic systems. In general, these systems are realized using digital techniques implemented in CMOS technology. The low power dissipation, high packing density, high noise immunity, ease of design and the relative ease of scaling are the driving forces of CMOS technology for digital applications. Parts of these systems cannot be implemented in the digital domain and will remain analog. In order to achieve complete system integration these analog functions are preferably integrated in the same CMOS technology. An important class of analog circuits that need to be integrated in CMOS are analog filters.
This book deals with very high frequency (VHF) filters, which are filters with cut-off frequencies ranging from the low megahertz range to several hundreds of megahertz. Until recently the maximal cut-off frequencies of CMOS filters were limited to the low megahertz range. By applying the techniques presented in this book the limit could be pushed into the true VHF domain, and integrated VHF filters become feasible. Application of these VHF filters can be found in the field of communication, instrumentation and control systems. For example, pre and post filtering for high-speed AD and DA converters, signal reconstruction, signal decoding, etc. The general design philosophy used in this book is to allow only the absolute minimum of signal carrying nodes throughout the whole filter.
This strategy starts at the filter synthesis level and is extended to the level of electronic circuitry. The result is a filter realization in which all capacitators (including parasitics) have a desired function. The advantage of this technique is that high frequency parasitic effects (parasitic poles/zeros) are minimally present.
The book is a reference for engineers in research or development, and is suitable for use as a text for advanced courses on the subject.

Digital Frequency Synthesis Demystified : DDS and Fractional-N PLLs (Demystified) (Demystified)
ASIN: 0792373669 |
Book Description
A major advantage of a direct digital synthesizer (DDS) is that its output frequency, phase and amplitude can be precisely and rapidly manipulated under digital processor control. Other inherent DDS attributes include the ability to tune with extremely fine frequency and phase resolution, and to rapidly `hop' between frequencies. These combined characteristics have made the technology popular in military radar and communications systems. In fact, DDS technology was previously applied almost exclusively to high-end and military applications: it was costly, power-hungry, difficult to implement, and required a discrete high speed D/A converter. Due to improved integrated circuit (IC) technologies, they now present a viable alternative to analog-based phase-locked loop (PLL) technology for generating agile analog output frequency in consumer synthesizer applications.
It is easy to include different modulation capabilities in the DDS by using digital signal processing (DSP) methods, because the signal is in digital form. By programming the DDS, adaptive channel bandwidths, modulation formats, frequency hopping and data rates are easily achieved. The flexibility of the DDS makes it ideal for signal generator for software radio. The digital circuits used to implement signal-processing functions do not suffer the effects of thermal drift, aging and component variations associated with their analog counterparts. The implementation of digital functional blocks makes it possible to achieve a high degree of system integration. Recent advances in IC fabrication technology, particularly CMOS, coupled with advanced DSP algorithms and architectures are providing possible single-chip DDS solutions to complex communication and signal processing subsystems as modulators, demodulators, local oscillators, programmable clock generators, and chirp generators. The DDS addresses a variety of applications, including cable modems, measurement equipments, arbitrary waveform generators, cellular base stations and wireless local loop base stations.
Direct Digital Synthesizers was written to find possible applications for radio communication systems. It will have appeal for wireless and wireline communication engineers, teachers and students.

Intuitive Analog Circuit Design
ASIN: 0792392884 |
Book Description
This volume of Analog Circuit Design concentrates on three topics: Operational Amplifiers. A-to-D converters and Analog CAD. The book comprises six papers on each topic written by internationally recognised experts. These papers have a tutorial nature aimed at improving the design of analog circuits. The book is divided into three parts. Part I, Operational Amplifiers, presents new technologies for the design of Op-Amps in both bipolar and CMOS technologies. Two papers demonstrate techniques for improving frequency and gain behavior at high voltage. Low voltage bipolar Op-Amp design is treated in another paper. The realization high-speed and high gain VLSI building blocks in CMOS is demonstrated in two papers. The final paper shows how to provide output power with CMOS buffer amplifiers. Part II, Analog-to-Digital Conversion, presents papers which address very high conversion speeds and very high resolution implementations using sigma-delta modulation architectures. Analog to Digital converters provide the link between the analog world of transducers and the digital world of signal processing and computing. High-performance bipolar and MOS technologies result in high-resolution or high-speed convertors which can be applied in digital audio or video systems. Furthermore, the advanced high-speed bipolar technologies show an increase in conversion speed into the gigahertz range. Part III, Analog Computer Aided Design, presents the latest research towards providing analog circuit designers with the tools needed to automate much of the design process. The techniques and methodologies described demonstrate the advances being made in developing analog design tools comparable with those already available for digital design. The papers in this volume are based on those presented at the Workshop on Advances in Analog Circuit Design held in Delft, The Netherlands in 1992. The main intention of the workshop was to brainstorm with a group of about 100 analog design experts on the new possibilities and future developments on the above topics. The result of this brainstorming is contained in Analog Circuit Design, which is thus an important reference for researchers and design engineers working in the forefront of analog circuit design and research.

Customer Reviews:
very good on the basics.......2007-06-04
Don't let the previous review dissuade from this book. This is a fine, albeit simple, approach to electronics. The author has a good writing style giving lots of qualitative descriptions of the basics.
Having said that, it is lacking a bit in the comprehensiveness department.
The chapter on Transducers is solid and the op-amp chapter is very good, too. Best thing about the book are the end of chapter review exercises and problems. New material is often introduced here and you have to have a good understanding of the chapter material to answer them. It's not just plug-n-chug from given equations to get an answer.
The author is also to be commended for showing how the material relates to actual circuits that scientists could use. Most electronics books seem to leave out this critical motivational material.
Contents:
1. Passive Components and Networks
2. Important Electronic Instruments
3. Transducers
4. Diodes and Power Supplies
5. Amplifier Behavior
6. Operational Amplifier and Electronic Function Blocks
7. Waveform-Shaping Circuits
8. Discrete Electronic Devices
Try Looking Somewhere Else First.......2007-06-01
This was the book that my instructor selected for our electronics class. "Your book is going to only cost $20 for this course, and it's really good" he told us.
Well, he didn't lie about the price, but I found this book to be terrible for entry level students. As a physicist who is really strong in math and electronics, I found this book incredibly confusing. I struggled with the homework questions and had to go look up other references because the book would ask a legitimate electronics question, yet so poorly cover the material that seemed like the question came out of left field.
Let me give you a perfect example. The book tells you how resistors are color coded, but then doesn't specifically tell you how to read a resistance with color coding. To a person already familiar with the topic, it wouldn't matter if you didn't know how to read resistance via color coding, the book's vague description should remind you how it's done, but if you weren't already familiar with how resistor color coding works, you would have a very difficult time understanding what the book said.
By the end of the class, I was so frustrated with the book that when I happend to finally find a straightforward explanation to an electronic device, I tore the pages out, and threw the rest of the worthless book away.
A friend introduced me to his 200 level circuits book which was $100, and I ordered a copy on the spot. It was so much more clear than this book.
You get what you pay for with this book. Buyer beware.

Customer Reviews:
excellent textbook on analog IC application.......2006-02-04
To my knowledge, this is the best book on this subject (at this level). I believe if you go through this book THROUGHLY and finish all the projects included, it is worth at least two year practical experience. For me an electrical engineer with 10 year working experience, I still find this book very useful.
The author could make the book even better if a bit more contents are added in Chapter 3: Digital Control of Aanlog Functions, such as examples with microcontroller applications (interface with A/D & D/A), though it may be beyond 'Analog' IC application.
Also, I found some parts used in the book are no longer available (therefore I would suggest the author to update some contents if he is planning to do so), you better check vendor's website to find the most current one.
Great Book and Great Professor.......2000-12-09
This is a great book. I am presently one of Jacobs' students and he is the best professor i have ever had. His reading material in this book is easy to read and very interesting. Most technical books are boring and hard to understand, but not this one. His teaching style is integrated in this book with excitement and wonderful theory. This book explains the OP AMP in detail along with power supplies, layout procedures, waveform generators, filters, non-linear circuits, and many more great concepts. Even if you are not taking the course, the book is an excellent reference.

Customer Reviews:
Good Coverage; But..........2006-02-27
quite out-of-date unfortunately... Especially on the coverage on switched-capacitor circuit techniques. Do not choose this book if you want to design modern analog/mixed-signal circuits, for instance, sigma delta modulators or low voltage (lower than 3.3 V) switched-capacitor circuits.
A must have for analog MOS designers.......1998-11-04
Analog MOS Integrated Circuits for Signal Processing is a must have for anyone doing IC MOS design or analysis. The authors take the reader through a logical progression of modern MOS design methods and analysis. Highly recommended reference.

Book Description
This is the first systematic study of strikebreaking, intimidation, and anti-unionism in the United States, subjects essential to a full understanding of labor's fortunes in the twentieth century. Paradoxically, the country that pioneered the expansion of civil liberties allowed corporations to assemble private armies to disrupt union organizing, spy on workers, and break strikes. Using a social-historical approach, Stephen Norwood focuses on the mercenaries the corporations enlisted in their anti-union efforts--particularly college students, African American men, the unemployed, and men associated with organized crime. Norwood also considers the paramilitary methods unions developed to counter mercenary violence. The book covers a wide range of industries across much of the country.
Norwood explores how the early twentieth-century crisis of masculinity shaped strikebreaking's appeal to elite youth and the media's romanticization of the strikebreaker as a new soldier of fortune. He examines how mining communities' perception of mercenaries as agents of a ribald, sexually unrestrained, new urban culture intensified labor conflict. The book traces the ways in which economic restructuring, as well as shifting attitudes toward masculinity and anger, transformed corporate anti-unionism from World War II to the present.
