                      Book Description

California gives employees more legal protection than any other state and sets the pattern for labor laws across the country. As success and satisfaction on the job often determine a person's overall happiness and financial well-being, noted employee rights attorney and "Los Angeles Times" columnist, Don D. Sessions has written an easy-to-read, enjoyable book, filled with practical information and advice about this important area -- the only current book detailing Employee Rights in California.

The book covers a broad range of topics, including discrimination, sexual harassment, whistle-blowing, slander, privacy, unemployment, overtime, bonuses and benefits, broken and fraudulent promises, and recourse. Additional resources provide information about free government programs and other sources of aid.

                      1 out of 5 stars No Help.......2002-05-16

This book was no help in learning about California Laws regarding Employee Rights. It is a compilation of simple questions written to the LA Times by readers and minimalistic answers to them that are vague and could be answered using common sense with no background in law.

                      4 out of 5 stars Practical Advice.......2000-10-01

"Everyone works for someone", a mentor once told me. And at some point in their lives, everyone has a problem at work. As a Human Resources practitioner of many years I know that most employees have no idea of their rights under the law, which often leads to bad decisions. I would recommend this book to anyone who works, as a quick reference and reality check. Chances are their particular issue may be covered; at the very least, the table of contents provides a way for people to categorize, and speak knowledgeably about, their specific issue. True, there is a danger of simplifying complex issues. But most people have no practical guidelines to apply to their working lives. This book provides a first step.

                      4 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2000-09-20

I found this book to be extremely valuable for understanding myrights as an employee in California. This book was easy to read and organized well. As a future business owner, it also provided helpful insight on how to protect myself and my employees. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs tons of good information, fast.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2000-05-07

Don Session's book is little more than a "fast-food approach" to legal assistance regarding abuse in the workplace. There are many other fine books on this important topic that will provide considerably greater help to those who have been harmed by their employer. Don't waste your money on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Easy and Straighforward.......2004-06-10

This book makes worker's compensation lw easy. I did not know anything about what I was entitled to, but this book laid it out for me in easy to understand terms and descriptions. It was not filled with the legal mumbo jumbo of some of the other books, and this is what I apprecated about the book. Yes it is easy and simple to read, but this is what I want and needed as an injured workr unaware of the laws and not very "law" savvy. Anyone could read this book and understnd it and get invaluable nkowledge about their rights. Unfortunately, though, if you were injured recently ithin the last year, it does not have any of the recent updates.

2 out of 5 stars Written for Kindegarteners.......2004-01-06

And about as useful as a coloring book. "Take Charge of Your Workers' Compensation Claim" by Christopher A. Ball is a much better book with lot's of information and helpful worksheets etc. I suppose if this is the only book you can find, it might be a little helpful. Unfortunately, there are no pearls of wisdom here. Sorry Ava. The text is very simple, the content is barely more than what common sense will tell you. As I mentioned, there are other books that really have great info. I appreciate the sentiment here, but the author ought to look at competitive books and write a new edition with some meat.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and to the point.......2002-04-26

This book is easy to read and it writen in "plain" english. I finaly understand what and how some of the Workers' Comp laws work and was very pleased. I recommend this book to anybody who is in the workers' comp system and is trying to understand the law and how to go about it.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful and easy to use.......2001-01-17

This book made it very easy to understand all the rules regarding workers comp. without all the confusing legalese found in the other books I tried. The forms included with the book came in very handy and made the whole process much easier than I expected. The tips and recommendations provided throughout the book are great! Before I read this book, I thought that I had no rights as an injured worker, now I know that I do have many and I know how to use access them.

5 out of 5 stars I now understand my rights as an injured worker.......2000-11-24

I have purchased other books written about worker's compensation and I have to say that "Facts Every Injured Worker Should Know" is definitely more comprehensive and detailed than all the others. This book covers everything about California's worker's compensation system, and is written in very simple easy to understand terms- two thumbs up! After reading this book, I now understand my rights as an injured worker.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Work of Truth.......2001-05-26

This book describes wonderfully how to apply the principles of Truth as illuminated in "A Course In Miracles", as well as other great works of Truth, to your career. Although the author doesn't refer to ACIM directly, the principles of Truth are constant and never changing, and this book, and ACIM illuminate the Truth.

This book gave me a deeper understanding of ACIM principles. Like Truth, it will show you the way to happiness. There doesn't need to be any conflict in your career and what you are. Doing what was meant for you to do is the challenge, and once you know the Truth of What-Is, it becomes very easy - and natural. I applaude the author for sharing his insight into this important area of our lives here on earth.

The last chapter entitled "How Does The World Work?" is one of the best pieces of spiritual writing I've ever come accross - truely inspired.

I find this book to be a very usefull and insightfull introduction to the scene which exists behind our normal work experience.

It investigates our basic motivations in serveral areas connected to the field of work. It relates them different to world pictures we can hold. It also dives deep into several main beliefs we normally have about work.

In this book, underlying driving forces and fears are brouht up to the level at which one can deal with them in a helpfull manner.

5 out of 5 stars Every business person ought to read and follow this book.......1999-10-06

Excellent and practical advice to follow for every business person. I have given away copies of this book to many people. As a businessman myself, I get a lot of peace knowing that the way I have operated my business has many deeper consequences. --Atul Tucker

”Bananas and Business covers such new ground, both in its postwar history of Columbia and in its analysis of UFC's managerial dicision making, that Bucheli does not need the straw man he laboriously dismantles.”

"This is an excellent addition to our knowledge about the UFCO....based on an exhaustive analysis of the primary sources...and a thorough understanding of the logic of the multinational enterprise. "A major contribution to both Latin American and international business history. Marcelo Bucheli challenges stereotyped views of the role of multinationals in developing countries by examining the evolving dynamic relationship between the US firm, local entrepreneurs, politicians and workers. Bucheli demonstrates the complex and nuanced role of multinationals in the creation of the global economy."

"Through a case study of two Colombian banana zones, based on unique access to United Fruit's internal archives, the author challenges the simplistic portrayal of UFCO as politically all-powerful and harshly exploitive by addressing the problems with declining profitability and risk the company faced over the long-term and the complex interactions through which local banana planters, plantation workers, and local and national governments influenced company decisions. This book makes a major contribution to the political economy of multinational corporations in Latin America and the new business history, and it highlights the agency of local entrepreneurs."

"Bucheli has crafted an excellent study."
                          —American Historical Review

For well over a century, the United Fruit Company (UFCO) has been the most vilified multinational corporation operating in Latin America. Criticism of the UFCO has been widespread, ranging from politicians to consumer activists, and from labor leaders to historians, all portraying it as an overwhelmingly powerful corporation that shaped and often exploited its host countries. In this first history of the UFCO in Colombia, Marcelo Bucheli argues that the UFCO's image as an all-powerful force in determining national politics needs to be reconsidered. Using a previously unexplored source—the internal archives of Colombia's UFCO operation—Bucheli reveals that before 1930, the UFCO worked alongside a business-friendly government that granted it generous concessions and repressed labor unionism. After 1930, however, the country experienced dramatic transformations including growing nationalism, a stronger labor movement, and increasing demands by local elites for higher stakes in the banana export business.

In response to these circumstances, the company abandoned production, selling its plantations (and labor conflicts) to local growers, while transforming itself into a marketing company. The shift was endorsed by the company's shareholders and financial analysts, who preferred lower profits with lower risks, and came at a time in which the demand for bananas was decreasing in America. Importantly, Bucheli shows that the effect of foreign direct investment was not unidirectional. Instead, the agency of local actors affected corporate strategy, just as the UFCO also transformed local politics and society.

5 out of 5 stars Gerber kills El Pulpo (the octopus) and more banana history.......2005-05-02

This book tracks the operations of United Fruit in Colombia over the century but does so within a framework of changing American market demand for bananas. Because the author pays so much attention to the actions of United Fruit's stockholders, this book sets precedent in the historiography of the company in Latin America. For this reason, the book will be of interest to anyone who is attentive of the role of American direct investment over the 20th century.

The United Fruit Company has long been maligned as an imperial bastion of American business interests, quick to exploit its workers and slow to return profits to where it extracts its commodity. This has view has had a longer view in Colombia than in other Latin American countries following the 1928 massacre of striking United Fruit workers by the Colombian troops. Gabriel Garcia exaggerated the details of this violence for his One Hundred Years of Solitude, and few others have believed that the company did more good than harm.

The author works hard to complicate this negative picture by showing that many workers today feel nostalgia for the days gone by when the company ran schools and hospitals and sold cheap luxury goods in its store. In the 1960s, the company divested of many of its operations of its Magdalena plantation and switched over to the Uruba plantation, but used a system of contracting to buy bananas from independent growers. The company did not have to provide social and health services nor did it have to negotiate as much with workers and the government. But the big blow against El Pulpo [the octopus, a common nickname for UFCo] came when processed food (ie., Gerber's baby food) diminished demand for bananas. The ways that UFCo transformed itself to cope with the new market landscape is laid out in detail.

This book is certain to stir controversy with those who believe that the Dollar Banana companies like Chiquita (United Fruit renamed) continue a very long tradition of giving their workers a bad bargain. Since unprofitable worker demands were part of the reason why United Fruit divested and switched to contracting, the author implies that the company had no other choice. But the race for the cheapest bananas by the three most powerful multinational banana corporations have created little incentive to offer improvements in living and working conditions for its producers. Most American consumers prefer to pay a few cents less per banana rather than buying from a more expensive product whose company offers livable wages and a clean environment where bananas are produced. This has long been the case and Chiquita knows it.

With these criticims aside, this book will be off interest to business historians and college classrooms considering the role of American business in Latin American lives. Workers continue to strike in Colombia and the company continues to threaten to leave Colombia entirely. To those interested in these current struggles, this book will provide an excellent backdrop and reminder that none of it is new.
