Customer Reviews:
Not even close to the standard we come to expect from VR.......1999-03-25
Vault Reports strength is the targeted and highly specified nature of their reports. Industry and even company specific information is what makes them what they are. This book is just the opposite: vague, broad, full of obvious advice and therefore useless.
It attempts to cover resume writing, cover letters and all types of interviews in one book. Impossible. Save your money, buy seperate books on the three areas and Vault Reports on companies and industries that interest you.

Book Description
From the dawn of the twentieth century to the early 1960s, public-sector unions generally had no legal right to strike, bargain, or arbitrate, and government workers could be fired simply for joining a union. Public Workers is the first book to analyze why public-sector labor law evolved as it did, separate from and much more restrictive than private sector labor law, and what effect this law had on public-sector unions, organized labor as a whole, and by extension all of American politics. Joseph E. Slater shows how public-sector unions survived, represented their members, and set the stage for the most remarkable growth of worker organization in American history.
Slater examines the battles of public-sector unions in the workplace, courts, and political arena, from the infamous Boston police strike of 1919, to teachers in Seattle fighting a yellow-dog rule, to the BSEIU in the 1930s representing public-sector janitors, to the fate of the powerful Transit Workers Union after New York City purchased the subways, to the long struggle by AFSCME that produced the nation's first public-sector labor law in Wisconsin in 1959. Slater introduces readers to a determined and often-ignored segment of the union movement and expands our knowledge of working men and women, the institutions they formed, and the organizational obstacles they faced.
Customer Reviews:
Public Works, Public Sector Unions, and Anti-Union Movement.......2004-07-06
This is the definitive read on the history and development of public sector labor unions. Based on exhaustive research, Professor Slater's insights on the perceived conflict between public section unions and democracy and good government provide a solid basis on which on understand the current rhetoric on whether new institutions like the TSA or Homeland Security Agency should be permitted to organize and act collectively. He clearly demonstrated, through historical examples, that this rhetorical strategy although superficially persuasive, and even some courts have bought into this rhetoric, it does not reflect the reality of the modern public sector labor union. This book is the seminal work in the field and should be assigned in any class interested in the modern labor movement, public sector labor unions or public sector labor law, or courses on goverment and unionism.
Excellent book!.......2004-02-19
A wonderful book that anyone intrested in labor law, labor history and labor policy ought to read.

Book Review ~ No B.S. Business Sense.......2007-05-24
I must admit this book review is one of the hardest I've written. Usually, there are only a handful of golden nuggets I can easily bullet point in a review for one book. With Dan Kennedy's No B.S. Business Success - The Ultimate No Holds Barred, Kick Butt, Take No Prisoners, Tough & Spirited Guide, I found something tangible and applicable to entrepreneurialism in each chapter.
As I read books, I keep a highlighter and sticky note pad close at hand to flag points to ponder or implement. You should see the numerous sticky notes poking out of this book. I'll share the most poignant ideas and encourage you to read the book to find out what speaks to you.
My absolute favorite passage from the book is found on page 11 and if you are a true, spirited entrepreneur, I imagine it will speak to you as well. Here it is "The fact- and it is fact-the line between "work" and "play" is thoroughly blurred for the true entrepreneur and the corollary fact that entrepreneur's business life is often, frankly, bluntly, more important to him (her)than his (her) personal and social life are a huge source of befuddlement, annoyance, and tension for those around him (her)." (note I have inserted the reference to "her" because I don't want it to be overlooked by the "good ole boys club" that this applies to many women entrepreneurs as well.
Kennedy counters this statement with sage advice pointing out that you don't want to marry your business, but rather marry the goals of the business. His point being, you own the business, don't let it own you. Throughout the book he shares ways to delegate and systematically reduce the dependency of your business on you. In order to truly experience wealth, security and freedom, you must embrace this notion and it's one of the hardest for entrepreneurs to do. The key, align yourself with sharp team members so you don't have lose sleep because you think if you don't do it, it won't be done right.
Here are a handful of the nuggets that spoke to me (and trust me there are many more).
· Hire support people to help with marketing but be careful who you hire and always check references.
· Sell yourself on selling. It's one of the most important skills an entrepreneur needs to succeed.
· Believe in your own abilities. You are probably a lot farther along than you would have guessed and you can be a success in your field.
· Never rely on only one person to fill one critical, key role in your businesses. Always have support or a backup plan.
· Don't become so absorbed in your success that affects other aspects of your life.
Again, these are nuggets that really spoke to me. Kennedy gives sound advice and applicable strategies throughout including how to deal with legal aspects of business, how to stay sane in an insane world, how to manage cash flow, how to achieve peak productivity, how to attract good luck and more. This book is well worth the read.
Loved it........2007-04-21
No B.S. is an incredible book and one I would highly recommend to any entrepreneur or business owner. Written in plain English, Kennedy's style is easy to grasp and understand. He avoids a lot of the technical/business speak that bogs many business books down. After reading this you'll believe that Kennedy is just like you and me... and that you have just as much opportunity for success that he's had. That's what makes No B.S. great!
I didn't find a boring chapter, nor did I find a chapter in which there was nothing to learn. Kennedy outlines what it takes to succeed in business in clear principles that anybody can do, if they set their mind to it. He covers everything from personal determination to how to attract good luck. (Yes, you can attract luck!)
The only chapter that I found less than enlightening and even somewhat ignorant is the chapter on Internet marketing. Of course, this is clearly my own bias as an Internet Marketer. Dan clearly doesn't understand (and admits as much) the potential for Internet marketing. But even with is own ignorance, Dan approaches that methodically and open to what the Internet can do for business. He's just an offline marketing guy!
If you read only one business book this year, make it this one. Seriously. After reading it you'll understand why Kennedy is so successful and you'll know that you can be just as successful if you put your mind and effort to that goal.
Right Between The Eyes.......2006-06-16
You'll either love this author and book or hate them. Dan Kennedy refreshingly hits you right between the eyes with sound business advice and reality. If you have thick skin and a sincere willingness to want to succeed in business, you won't want to miss this read.
A good intro to Kennedy and to Running Your Business Cost Effectively.......2005-10-06
I've read Dan Kennedy's stuff for years. I think pound for pound, dollar for dollar, he's one of the best. For those who have been around, this serves as a reinforcement and at times a firm kick in the butt about the need to stick with the basics.
Running a business requires marketing, management and problem-solving know how. I try to convey this to my clients too. It's mastering the hundreds of small details that leads to big success. This book cover all of those areas realistically. Dan has always taught that everyone's wants the magic pill. No pill here. But for $10 you really can't go wrong.
Not a great book at all.......2005-02-16
The litmus test for any book on selling is, will it help me make my numbers? Any book that doesn't do that doesn't deserve to be on the shelf in my book. Boy, was I sucked in by this one.
I read this book based upon the glowing reviews it received. All I can say it that they must be friends of the author or paid reviews because this book is one of the least effective books on selling I've ever read.
If you want to base your career on things like "Create good guilt" (wow, nothing like a little manipulation, huh?), or "Create Differentiation" (now, there's a brand new concept) (both of these are from page 87 which I pulled at random).
Save your money. If you want to CLOSE BUSINESS then get Strategic Selling or Conceptual Selling, both classics that will help you make your numbers.
Good selling,
Bob

More Goodness from Mr. NOBS.......2007-09-27
Dan Kennedy can do no wrong, and this book is no exception. Much better than the books that show you how to go through your email the fastest way possible...Dan shows you how to get people to not send you email.
Great, great stuff.
No B.S. Time Management for Entrepreneurs .......2007-07-16
How much of your day is actually spent in productive work? Not the time you spend in your office staring at the computer screen, on the phone, checking your email, or dealing with the umpteenth question from that employee that always seems to need just another minute of your time. Productive time is the time you are actually earning money by directly working on a project.
No BS Time Management for Entrepreneurs explains that it's those little irritants and side tasks that only take a few minutes of your time that gradually and progressively eat away your precious time. Therefore, the only real way to make productive use of your time is to limit these distracters and focus on the real work at hand.
Though I had already realized a good deal of my own distracters and time eaters before I read this book, No BS Time Management for Entrepreneurs made me realize exactly how limiting these behaviours really are and how much more productive I could become. I don't have to limit sleep to a few hours a night. I just have to realize the value of my time and react appropriately.
Short and sweet.......2007-06-16
The thing I like about this book is its no-nonsense, get-to-the-good-stuff style. There are lots of tips, but probably the best advice is to calculate your desired income and plan your work days accordingly. There is also a good chapter on the 10 productivity tips that actually work. Those two items alone are worth the price of the book.
Essential Knowledge for Success in any field.......2007-05-13
This book should be required reading for any business school student.
There used to be mandatory lists of the classics in some English literature courses...this should be in a similar list of mandatory reading for anybody wanting to make the most of their time.
Kennedy describes how certain people will suck up your time that you could and should be putting to better and much more productive use.
He also talks about how people who are habitually late are also unethical and shady in other parts of their lives.
This part really struck home to me because the night before I read this part I had decided to quit associating with a certain individual who was always late and didn't have the kind of business ethics I wished to be associated with. Seeing Dan's writing about it only made me realize how we allow bad habits to rob us of better usues of our time.
There are also hints about how to not allow phone calls to interrupt your thinking and producing.
Kennedy also talks about how a simple pen and paper can be more reliable than an electronic device that might fail and lose your info. I had been using a 4 x 6 index card myself for many years because I too found it to be more easier to transport than an electronic device and more durable than Dan's suggestion of a folded legal pad piece of paper.
There are other tips that make this book one of the best values you can ever buy if you only put it to use.
Information packed, entertaining read.......2007-02-12
Of all the No B.S. books, this one is the best of the bunch. True to its title "No BS", Dan gives real-world, down to earth tips on managing time effectively. Forget about fancy, nonsense small talk, this one contains brutally honest, harshly simple pointers that makes this book a classic. In fact, I read this book at least three times and found it valuable every time.
FYI, Dan's books and style is not for the timid person who's looking for affirmation. This is no "feel good" book, it's a blast of ice-cold reality every serious or semi-serious entrepreneur needs.

Book Description
NO BULL Object Technology for Executives is a friendly, insightful introduction to object-oriented (OO) technology. William Perlman has specifically written this book for business executives and managers who have a software development organization within their company or area of responsibility, but have neither the time nor the background necessary to read through manuals and technical publications. The book focuses on the benefits and pitfalls of investing in object technology from a financial and human resources perspective. It also provides a nontechnical understanding of OO terminology, what OO technology is, and how programmers use it. Written clearly and concisely and peppered with humorous cartoons and other informative illustrations, this book is essential to all nontechnical decision-makers. It will also prove helpful to people with a background in other programming models who wish to explore object technology.

A Masterpiece of Wisdom and Wit--A Cure for Managerial Blues.......1999-11-03
Herb Gabora's NO-BULL MANAGEMENT is absolutely the most entertaining, refreshing business book I've ever read. However, it'll require savvy to separate the serious from the silly. You'll laugh as you ascend the managerial ladder. This one-of-a-kind practical--but also satirical--book will shore up you business acumen. At the same time, it will keep you in stitches.
I've read hundreds of inspirational-motivational volumes beamed to business and virtually every area of life. Herb Gabora, a Canadian import, is better than Canada Dry!
