Ever been in a poorly run meeting? This book is for you........2000-08-23
If you are like me, you have been in at least one meeting where the participants wonder why this meeting was called, the chairperson wonders how to gain control of the agenda, and the proceedings wander about until, mercifully, the meeting runs out of time before key deliberations have been carried out. The participants file out one by one, grateful that the meeting is over. But there is still the next meeting to contend with! This may seem exaggerated, but it is not far from the truth. Meetings are often so poorly managed that there is ample room for improvement. The more useful interventions are aimed at the process by which meetings are organized and run. Donald Tortorice's The Modern Rules of Order is a valuable gem of a book that can add value for anyone who runs meetings or participates in them. It is contemporary, sensible and eminently pragmatic.
Try this book on for advice on how to conduct meetings. I know that I have benefited from it greatly.

A must read for any officer or director of a business. Practical, common sense, easy to read and useful for managing meetings to get results. The book allows one to avoid the old stumbling blocks and use new techniques to process information and make decisions.
The Modern Rules of Order:.......2000-02-09
First, a caveat. I have known the author, both professionally and personally, for over ten years. Together we have had the opportunity to conduct countless business meetings,There is no one I would prefer to have at my side when running a meeting. His knowledge of the old Roberts Rules, together with his pragmatism and common sense, have always resulted in a smoothly run meeting with "no bumps in the road".
The author has taken his experience and fashioned a modern primer for the conduct of meetings, replete with sage advice and practical suggestions. It includes abundant anecdotes from his personal experience.
If you conduct meetings, this is a book you have to have.
The Modern Rules of Order: A New Way of Running Meetings.......2000-02-09
This is a surprising book in many ways. First, that no one has thought to fill such an obvious need in our modern, meeting-filled society before Mr. Tortorice's effort. Second, that so much information can be included in so few words. But that appears to be the purpose of "The Modern Rules of Order": to create a modern and efficient way of running meetings without all of the detailed and procedural-bound technicalities of "Robert's Rules" or of the Rules of Congress or of Parliament which traditionally have been the only available alternatives.
While aficionados of the arcane technicalities of "Robert's Rules" (including this writer) may miss the parliamentary feints and maneuvers available under those Rules, "The Modern Rules" will allow corporations, public bodies, and groups of any size to get directly to the point of the meeting efficiently and directly.
The book itself includes two basic chapters. Chapter One provides the 15 rules for running meetings. Chapter Two then discusses each of the 15 rules giving the reader in succinct form the purpose of each rule and a description of how each rule fits into the overall theory of the Rules. In addition, the author includes 3 additional chapters which provide sample agendas for meetings (Chapter3), guidelines for the taking of minutes and the conduct of meetings (Chapter 4), and sample minutes(Chapter5). In short, all one needs to become Chairman of the Board-- or at least corporate counsel.
In the mid-twentieth century, an author in China produces a short, red-covered book which provided a large nation with directions on how to transform an entire society. This is not to say that this little book will have the same influence but anyone with many meetings to attend or to run is greatly encouraged to purchase and use "The Modern Rules of Order" to facilitate pointed, focused and orderly meeting. Who knows, maybe this book will prevent a revolution some day.

No Excuses For Milady.......2007-03-12
As this is the ninth edition of what is alledgedly the most widely used text for beginning estheticians, then the persistent use of mediocre-to-poor science is inexcusable. Doesn't the author consult *anyone* in the scientific/medical community before sending this thing off to the printers? It is *not*, for instance, an established fact that vitamin A protects human beings from cancer of any sort. There is certainly data that looks promising, but that's it. And since vitamin K is manufactured in the intestinal tract, why is paper wasted insisting that students, many of them fresh out of high school, should be memorizing the names of the food sources of this abundant nutrient? Many of these kids struggle with the science that *is* relevent to the profession they hope to enter. My husband is a doctor, I'm an RN, and neither of us has ever used the term "non-striated" muscle. It's "smooth" muscle, for crying out loud! And while I'm on the subject of muscles, absolutely none - not one - healthcare professional I'm acquainted with has ever learned anything about the "belly" of the muscle! No matter - 18 year-old kids have to learn what is not required of first-year medical students. Please. Yes, as a basic introductory text it has much to recommend it; all the more reason to get the science right. S.T., RN, Rochester, NY
Better textbook than prior years.......2005-09-29
This is for esthetician students. The information is basic and well organized. The photos sometimes do not follow the text but it reads easily.
This is a good all around Beauty School book.......2005-08-21
Most of the chapters are well written and understandable. I have found some discrepancies in the information, and feel that the book could have been edited a little better. The book explains sanitation but does not go into the correct method of sanitizing all items that one would use during a service. The material is quite dry, and could really use something to get the student excited about the occupation that they have chosen.

I purchased this book to study from for my stateboard here in CA. This book was dated and seemed to reflect nothing that was on my stateboard test. I do not recommend this book for California's board it was irrelevant and useless! Your better off not getting it and just going from the test book and other resources!

Compared to Milady's newest edition ..........2007-01-12
this book is MUCH better. The new edition deleted a LOT of the info from this edition ... guess what? The state board test still asks questions from this book! The new book has color pictures and notes in the margin. BIG DEAL! This edition of this book has helped me pass most of my tests in class. Without it, I would have done much worse. I keep it as reference. Milady, what were you THINKING when you brought out the new edition???? Put the info back into the new edition!!!!
Inaccurate and missleading.......2003-05-03
Working through this book on a skin care course was very frustrating. The medical terms used were inaccurate and often contradictory.
Althought the basic skin care isues were dealt with efficiently the anatomy and physiology references were not consistent with current medical text books.
This publisher has many better books. Avoid this one.

This book is very thorough, up-to-date, and informative. I found it easy to read and follow, and the contents pages are very well-labeled, making it easy to find the desired information quickly. I would highly recommend this text to anyone looking to learn new skills or brush up on old skills.

I also used this book as a text in Aesthetics School - and at the time, I didn't appreciate it as much as now - when I'm working in the field. I find myself going back and reviewing what I may have missed the first time.

This textbook is practically the only standard textbook that can be utilized by students preparing to become estheticians. However, the book needs to be brought up to current standards. Do not just print a new edition without updating the information, this stifles the profession!

This is a fine book that provides important new insights not only into the history of big cattle ranching in California, but also into our broader understanding of the settlement of the American West and the meaning of American industrialization. Igler's concept of the "industrial cowboy" who works, in essence, in a factory without walls in which the landscape of nature itself becomes part of the technological system should force all American historians to rethink their understanding of what constitutes an industrialization. Likewise, Igler's work adds to the growing body of evidence that one of the best ways of defining and thinking about the American West is a place where a relatively pristine environment interesected with an advanced industrial society.
