i read the previous edition (1997) to the jobbank guide to computer and high-tech companies, and i must say that it was well-written. i'd recommend it for anyone looking to get an overview of who's who in an exploding industry. i'd also recommend a look at the VaultReports Guide to the High-Tech Industry, which was extremely insightful and a bit more of a fun read.

4 out of 5 stars Troubleshooting & Repairing Microwave Ovens........2007-02-09

I purchased this book used through the Amazon reseller "Recycled goodies" [...]. It was in "as new" condition, just as described. They shipped promptly, followed up with a shipping confirmation email and service was excellent overall. Very highly recommended.

This fourth edition publication dates from 1997 and has been out of print for quite a while. Tracking one down is like trying to find the Holy Grail.
Nonetheless, [...]or not, this book is still valid and contains up to date electronic application and troubleshooting data. It has a great deal of in-depth information, for both general application as well as brand specific.
I did residential and commercial appliance repair for over sixteen years, in addition to other trades, and still found this book to be interesting and informative.
I believe it is now common knowledge that it is usually not cost effective to repair most small counter top household-duty microwave ovens manufactured in the last fifteen years or so. However, for many appliance technicians, microwave oven repair is still a valid art and can indeed supplement their annual income.
Depending on what geographic area you live in, many of the newer "top of the line" over the range [OTR] microwave/hoods can cost well over six hundred dollars, not including installation. Scrapping one of these ["check and condemn", as it is sometimes called] even after several years of use because of a bad touchpad, HV capacitor, diode, or magnetron, etc., does not make any sense at all, barring other evidence of abuse or complete neglect of the appliance on the owners part.
The larger commercial-duty, dual magnetron units used in restaurants can easily cost over fifteen hundred dollars, depending on which distributor they are purchased through. They are in a state of almost constant use and when they malfunction, as with any other commercial kitchen equipment, effective repair, not replacement is the normal, expected remedy.
There is only one other microwave repair manual I can find that rivals this ten-year-old book. It is from Microtech Productions and as far as I know, is only available on CD. Since this fourth edition book is out of print, and an updated fifth edition may never arise, Microtech's CD may be the only way to get the necessary in-depth knowledge for safe, efficient microwave oven repair.

5 out of 5 stars Very practical book.......2002-09-12

This is one great book for practical book on repairing microwave ovens. Lots of general and specific advice on major brands. Even though uWaves have become a commodity item, ie less than $$$, it becomes unlikely that a commercial repair shop can remain in business. But if you can get several uWaves, ie dumpster diving, and get a few spare/swap parts, the assistance of the book demystifies magnetrons, high voltage caps, safety interlocks, and fuses. I read this book at the local library ...

    Book Description

The definitive collection by the most celebrated (and notorious) comic book artists of our time.

A panorama of some of the most creative and subversive art of our times, this one-of-a-kind anthology celebrates the artistry and insight of comic book art, graphic novels, and graphic journalism from the 1960s to the present. Classics such as R. Crumb's I Remember the Sixties, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's Spider-Man saga "The Final Chapter" (from Spider-Man #33), and Dan Clowes's Caricature are featured, plus new sequences of work by Chris Ware and Ben Katchor created exclusively for this volume.

Other sections include work by Gilbert Shelton and Paul Mavrides ("The Death of Fat Freddy"), Harvey Pekar and R. Crumb ("Jack the Bellboy and Mr. Boats"), Carol Tyler ("Labor"), Stan Lee and Jim Steranko ("The Strange Death of Captain America"), Stan Lee and Jack Kirby ("The Hate Monger"), Bob Kanigher and Joe Kubert ("Enemy Ace"), Will Eisner ("Izzy the Cockroach and the Meaning of Life"), Rick Geary ("Farewell to Charlie Chaplin"), Kaz ("Dream of the Pork Rinds Fiend"), Charles Burns ("Robot Love"), Gary Panter ("Jimbo"), Art Spigelman ("The Honeymoon" from Maus), Frank Miller with Klaus Janson and Lynn Varley ("Born Again" from Daredevil), Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons ("Dr. Manhattan" from Watchmen), Neil Gaiman with Charles Vess and Malcolm Jones III ("A Midsummer Night's Dream" from The Sandman), Joe Sacco ("Hebron"), Jaime Hernandez ("Locos"), Gilbert Hernandez ("Pipo"), Dori Seda ("The Do-Nothing Decade"), Eddie Campbell ("Nobody Left at the Café Guerbois"), and more. The book is divided into four main galleries: Underground Comics, Silver Age Super Heroes, A Raw Generation, and Dark Fiction and Deep Fantasy, and includes a special supplement of four-color work by Lynda Barry and others as well. In his lively introduction Bob Callahan celebrates the achievements of American comic book art from the late 1930s to the present. An indispensible collection. 100 color, 300 b/w illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars Great for collectors and newbies alike.......2007-08-29

An expertly assembled collection of stories, covering everything from superheroes, to feminist comics, to historical fare. The only complaint that I have is that sometimes the splash pages (especially 2-page spreads) were arranged in such a way as just to make them fit, and not necessarily with the flow of the story. Other times the print was just too small to be reasonably called legible. But overall, a good variety for the money, and a fabulous primer for anyone who is wondering what comics are all about.

3 out of 5 stars Great examples, Poor Execution.......2006-07-17

I agree with the other reviewers the editing is shoddy in production, but the initial selection of the materials is quite excellent. No one could argue that all of the comics included are indeed some of the best work from the later half of the 20th century. for that reason I am willing to give the book a little more respect and hope that a paperback edition corrects some of the more glaring faults.

2 out of 5 stars Silly mistakes and lack of colour mar this book.......2005-06-03

Since another reviewer on this page has pointed out the Fat Freddys Cat mistake, I thought I'd draw readers attention to the other problems with this book. The Captain America story, which features 2 of Sterenko's most well known double-page spreads also features a strange right-hand page that does not appear in the original comic. This page (which precedes the spreads) features a reproduction of a later page and appears to have been dropped in randomly. This page unfortunatly creates a knock-on effect that means the 2 spreads are now right and left pages! For a book that claims to celebrate the best comics created this is a poor oversight. Also, the Dan Clowes story features 2 pages out of order. Lastly, why on earth is 95% of the book in black and white? For stories like The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen - where the colour really helps add tone and mood - this seems like a strange decision.

    2 out of 5 stars Missing page(s).......2004-11-22

This book looks great and my initial expectations were high. However, imagine my disappointment when I discovered the last page of the Fat Freddy's Cat adventure (page 30) was a duplicate of an earlier one (page 26)! I expected better proofreading from a Smithsonian publication.

not a longwinded anecdote about an age by someone who wasnt a part of it but the strips, sundays and dalies, from the turn of the century heavy into the forties with a quick touch of fifties to top it off. has the prestige and backing of the smithsonian, so the selection is incredible, complete storylines are presented, color, large format, things youve never seen before and will never see again. thimble theatre, krazy kat, flash gordon, ally oop, mutt and jeff, king aroo, dasheil hammet, rube goldberg, walt disney, dick tracy, little orphan annie, white boy, li'l abner, terry and the pirates, winsor mckay including little nemo sundays, a large number of teens and twenties strips i cant name, a large number of thirties and forties strips i cannot name, i am in awe of this book. i am a comic maker and reader and this book is absolutely flooring.

5 out of 5 stars The First Book of Newspaper Comics.......2007-01-18

I studied this book like a Bible when I was a kid, lying on the floor all weekend. I started on the easy reads like Allie Oop and Buster Brown, then slowly got drawn-in to strange ones like Krazy Kat. I was surprised by the great narratives in strips I'd only seen in tired forms, like Popeye and Mickey Mouse. All the way into college I was still making new discoveries, eventually coming all the way back to love the pure optimism of Buster Brown. Astounding examples of art are all through this book; It's amazing.

    5 out of 5 stars A truly excellent compilation.......2006-06-15

This is a beautifully packaged collection of some of the very best comic-strip art from the first half of the 20th century (and a little more). The reproduction is very good, the introductory material is useful and informative and the selection of strips is first rate.

In particular, having collected several of these strips in other formats over the years (e.g. "Little Nemo", "Polly and Her Pals" and "Krazy Kat"), I can say that they've selected many of my personal favorites for inclusion here.

As I write this, this book is basically in "remainder" status meaning that it is available brand new for very cheap, but has gone out of print in hardcover - pick it up while you can!

5 out of 5 stars Histarical Clever Great Wish I had 10 copies.......2002-07-06

One day I had to go to the library to get a book from my 7th grade reading list and I saw this huge book of comics and I just had to take it out. I read it probably 100 times .It became my favorite book.My favorite comics were Popeye, Gasoline Alley, The Smythes, and Krazy Kat. I love this book and you will to. So my advice to you is if you love comics you will love this book!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Look at the History of Comic Strips.......2002-07-05

I've always been a huge comic strip fan going back to the days when my dad was the press foreman and he let me (as a little kid) watch the "Sunday Funnies" get printed. Awesome! Fast forward to my high school years. I was bored and killing study hall time in the library when I stumbled upon this book.

The book is broken down by period going back to the first comic strips and working their way up to the early 70's. There's some text where the authors write to explain the different styles or comment on various strips but the real gem here are all of the comic strip samples in this book. Some strips (like Mickey Mouse) get many pages as they tell a whole story. Others don't get but a single sample strip, especially strips after the 1950's.

I love this book and will break it out from time-to-time just to read all of the classic strips like "Yellow Kid", "Buster Brown", "Katzenjammer Kids", "Mutt and Jeff", "Little Nemo in Slumberland", "Thimble Theater", "Mickey Mouse", "Krazy Kat", and many, many more.

It's a shame this book hasn't been re-published with new sections to include modern classics but oh well. If you can find it, it's well worth having!

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and educational.......2006-12-24

A SMITHSONIAN BOOK OF COMIC BOOK COMICS is a delightful book, emphasizing the vitality and creativity of the form. After a brief introduction giving a short history of the American comic book, the book is organized into a dozen sections composed of a short essay followed by representative stories. The first section is about the creation of Superman and includes the very first appearance of Superman. Superman inspired a host of "superheroes," including Batman and Captain Marvel, who each get a section. The book also covers the comic books aimed at young children (The Pie-Faced Prince"), war stories, comics for adult readers ("Master Race") and satirical ("Mad"). The part I enjoyed most was the section titled "Little Lulu and John Stanley." Lulu was my favorite comic as a child. I found those comics hilarious and even as a kid I appreciated the witty language. I had been giving all the credit to "Marge." As it turns out, Marge Buell created Lulu in 1935. A man named John Stanley inherited the job of writing Lulu comics in the late 1940s and was creating them when I was a child in the mid-50s. I think John Stanley was a genius. There are four Little Lulu stories included. "The Little Rich Boy" is especially impressive. The satirical Mad Comics is very well represented by the Superman parody "Superduper Man" and "Howdy Dooit," a rather scathing spoof of children's TV. This is a very entertaining book that I think offers much to think about regarding American popular culture. Four stars.

5 out of 5 stars A great book collecting rare reprints.......2002-06-06

This book is nothing more or less than a series of reprints of what the author deems "important" comics. Each comic story faithfully reprinted, with the page emulating newsprint. (The entire comic is not reproduced, only the highlighted strip.) There is a little one or two page introduction giving a little history about each comic.

What makes this book such a standout, is that the author's taste is singular, and not limited by a single company or genre. Characters from several different companies happily exist side-by-side in this excellent hardcover. The author has a confessed predisposition for "funny" comics, and these take up a large percentage of the book.

This predisposition allows for several comics to be reprinted that are not normally available. There are numerous reprints of Action Comics #1 (The first Superman comic) and Detective Comics #27 (The first Bat-man Comic) but how many other collections include All-American Comics #20 with the first appearence of Ma Hunkle, the original Red Tornado?

A list of comics included: Action Comics #1 (First appearance of Superman); Detective Comics #29 (Origin of Bat-man); All-American Comics #20-#14 (First appearance of the Red Tornado, and other Red Tornado stories); Police Comics #1 and #13 (First appearance of Plastic Man, and Woozy Winks); Captain Marvel Adventures #100 (Captain Marvel Battles the Plot Against the Universe); Sub-Mariner #4 (Dr. Dimwit by Basil Wolverton); Tessie the Typist #8 (Powerhouse Pepper by Basil Wolverton); Jingle Jangle Comics #5, 24#, (The Pie-faced Prince by George Carlson); Little Lulu Four Color 74 and Little Lulu #38, #40, #80; Walt Disney's Christmas Parade #1 (Donald Duck Christmas story by Carl Barks); Animal Comics #1, Pogo Possum #3, #8 (Pogo the Possum and Gang by Walt Kelly); The Spirit supplements August 10, 1941, September 5, 1948, September 11, 1949 (Great Spirit stories by Will Eisner); The EC Collection (Frontline Combat No. #4, Two-Fisted Tales #25, Mad #4 (Superduperman vs. Captain Marbles), Mad # 18, Impact #1)

5 out of 5 stars My Introduction to the classic strips.......2002-05-29

The "Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics" is a giant, heavy hardcover book that is just bursting with great comic strips. We bought this as a present for my Granddad in 1984, but you can be sure that I got far more use out of it than he did. Every visit to their house had me pouring over these old comics.

Comic strips of the golden age where very different from the tiny, three panel strips we have today. Huge, multi-page full-color adventures were the norm. "Little Nemo in Slumberland" is a burst of eye-candy. Windsor McCay had imagination and talent. "Thimble Theater Staring Popeye" was another favorite of mine. E.C. Segar's Sailor is very different, and much improved, from the spinach-eather we have now.

Other great strips in here are "The Yellow Kid," "Gasoline Alley," "Barney Google," "Moon Mullins," "Buster Brown" and the list goes on. This book is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Wonder.......2000-10-25

Growing up in the 60s & 70s, I wasn't much enamored of comic strips appearing in the newspaper with a scant few exceptions. Newspaper comics were awfully stale if not comatose at the time; they smell even worse now. In light of this reality, thank God I found this book 20 years ago. To me, this mammoth oversized anthology of color and b/w strips (mostly vintage 1895-1950) was and is an education, a revelation and a door to a separate reality. Who knew that such fully realized, utterly compelling and unique works of art were once commonplace features in our daily and Sunday newspapers? Compiler Bill Blackbeard provides minimal but insightful commentary, which only underscores his good taste as the majority of SMITHSONIAN is devoted to the actual comics themselves. Wherever possible, he provides continuities of strips to give the reader not only a fuller flavor of the individual storylines and the era they appeared in, but each strip's particular dynamic with its audience. What's also impressive is the sheer number of titles sampled. Among the weightier excerpts are Popeye, Moon Mullins, Wash Tubbs/Capt. Easy, Barney Google, Polly and her Pals, Krazy Kat...but many of the lightly-skimmed properties are just as good. Set aside their enormous entertainment value and what you may find most impressive is how starkly individual each strip creator is; what ends up on the page is the sum total of one man's creative & emotional being, distorted through a prism of fantasy or slapstick or melodrama. Your net gain as reader: 336 pages of the kind of joyous, crazy, all-elbows-and-graceful-despite-it art that can only emerge from forms that the Arbiters of Taste don't take very seriously. Splendid as this book is the first time 'round, it continues to enrich you, always revealing more with every subsequent re-reading. Out of print for a while but readily available through the online auction services; I also hear it's being reissued soon. By the way, the other mandatory strip anthologies are the 'sequel' to this one (COMIC STRIP CENTURY), an important predecessor (Robinson's THE COMICS) and the entire run of Rick Marschall's NEMO magazine; happily, there is next to no duplication of strips reprinted between all of them (apparently the archivist's code of honor). 4 out of 5 stars Blue Collar Comedy.......2007-02-08

This book was really funny and a good relaxing read. Especially if you like the Blue Collar Comedy Tour.

2 out of 5 stars Sophomoric and Painful.......2006-12-24

I had high hopes for this book. They were dashed. It's mostly a series of "tests" to determine what to do and "letters" about surreally unbelievable situations. For this book, "white trash" implies that burglary is the preferred career, everybody has four or more husbands/wives over time and innumerable dalliances beyond, and any carnal urge results in children who must be taught how to burgle.

It's just not funny, and has nothing in common with Jeff Foxworthy or David Barry writing about similar topics.

5 out of 5 stars A very, very funny read.......2006-06-23

A co-worker of mine strongly recommended "White Trash Etiquette" on a recent business trip, and was kind enough to let me borrow his copy. I read it cover-to-cover in my hotel room, and spent a good chunk of time chuckling at Dr. Verne's musings on life. This is a very, very funny book. It's quite original -- I've seen nothing like it. Dr. Verne shares his wisdom on all sorts of funny issues ranging from scams to sports to love. Dr. Verne's take on life is downright hilarious. This is a great book for a cover-to-cover read, or for someone who just has bits of time and wants to have a quick laugh. This book will definitely put a smile on your face.

5 out of 5 stars Better that getting your car stereo stoled.......2006-06-21

            How do?

The name's Dr. Verne Edstrom, Esq. -- literary giant, petty thief, and self-help advisor to the stars. This here's my book.

I wrote it to help all yous trash out there. Say you got an important question, like how to make your fourteen-year-old cousin unpregnant, or who you should kidnap if you're aiming to impress a woman. You think you're gonna ask Dr. Laura about that? Her face would explode and her makeup would catch fire. Pretty soon you burned down eleven states, but you still don't know who you're supposed to abduct.

Me, I was figuring to help folks rise up from under the viaduct so's they could do better robberies, get themselves more marriages, and start living the life of luxury in a nice doublewide where the heat always works and the cupboards is always filled with liquor and ammo.

And if you ain't buying that explanation, here's a better one: I got eight or ten kids. Seeing as how the missus is built like an ore boat, the smart money says she's good for a half-dozen more. So if you don't buy my book, I don't get no money, which means eight to ten kids is gonna be loose on the streets, stealing your car stereo.

And any moron knows a book is cheaper than a car stereo. That's just good financial thinking.

4 out of 5 stars Funny, sad .......2007-02-06

The writing style was super and the characters believable. You can't help but be involved with them. It's funny and sad all at the same time.

            4 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2002-09-19

I knew people like this growing up. And I grew up in South Dakota. It's a story of poor people who could be anywhere. Characters are great -- I like a book where I don't necessarily like the characters -- they're just real. This is a "must read" just for the exposure to the Trailer Trash side of life.

            4 out of 5 stars Practically perfect.......2002-06-27

I had my doubts about this book at first, but I was pleasantly surprised. Coming from a small rual town in Arkansas, some of the characters actions are things I've witnessed from local residents. I think anyone would enjoy this book regardless of your background.

            4 out of 5 stars One man's trash is another man's treasure.......2001-11-27

A surprisingly intriguing story line brings forth a select grouping of trailer park residents and their emotional stews. Humorous, sensitive and a quick read, this is delightful fiction for those craving diversion.
