If managing people once felt like a stay at the Taj Mahal, today it's more like a visit to Beirut's Commodore Hotel, where guests were asked upon check-in, "Sniper side or shelling side?" As author and columnist Bob Rosner pointed out in his earlier book, Working Wounded, bosses are poked from above and prodded from below. How to cope? The Boss's Survival Guide aims to give managers tools for handling the shrapnel. Its 430 pages discuss the 65 most vexing challenges bosses face today, including how to screen out jerks when hiring, how to let people go fairly and legally, how to change an employee's problem behavior, and how to keep people motivated.

Don't let the size of The Boss's Survival Guide daunt you; this is not a book to sit and read cover to cover. It's meant as a reference tool, a kind of Physician's Desk Reference for help when you're facing a specific dilemma. Which is not to say it's a dull read. On the contrary, the authors (who, in addition to Rosner, include Allan Halcrow, former editor of Workforce magazine, and Alan Levins, an employment attorney) have worked overtime to present the information in humorous, easy-to-digest snapshots. Each chapter is divided into four sections: a short background area called "Know the Issue"; a set of concrete action steps; a highly useful section called "Stay out of Jail"; and "Manage Up," a short section on how to handle your own boss. Most chapters also include brief real-world examples and indicate where to go if you need more information on a particular problem.

Overall, the book is a comprehensive, highly readable reference tool that would be of use to both new and seasoned managers. In a cover quote, business luminary Ken Blanchard writes, "This book has everything you'll ever need to know about being an effective boss but don't have time to learn." He's right on the money. --Charles Decker

Book Description

In today’s booming economy, there are more jobs than there are qualified people to fill them. Retaining those qualified employees has become a manager’s top priority. Today’s managers not only need to make sure their employees are productive, but also need to make sure their employees remain satisfied and motivated—otherwise employees will leave.

According to recent surveys, what really causes employees to stay or drives them away is “the boss,” and not money or perks. That means that managers need to learn how to manage in ways that will attract qualified workers and make them want to stay. Short on theory and long on hands-on, real-world advice and guidance, this survival guide:

• Tells managers, in plain English, why and how they need to change the way they operate in order to hold on to valued employees
• Covers all the bases, including hiring and orientation, team-building, coaching, setting expectations, painless performance appraisals, and other day-to-day issues
• Features Rosner’s trademark humor— well-known to the tens of thousands of loyal readers of his nationally syndicated column, “Working Wounded”

...fast enough.

The Boss's Survival Guide is fairly worthless tripe. Appears to have been written by a group of tipsy Union reps. Too PC and too anti-Management to be used by any real manager.

Gonna supervise a group of tree huggers out to protest at an NRA meeting? This "book" is for you. Otherwise, don't waste your money or time.

1 out of 5 stars !!.......2003-09-20

Like this is anything new? I wish I could live the life the authors talk about in this book. They make me sick! I hope they all end up the way the rest of us has - alone and miserable

4 out of 5 stars Readable and practical advice........2001-11-14

This is a good, general book for managers, especially those who own or manage a small business and don't have the resources of a corporation for guidance. In spite of the glut of business management books on the market, it still amazes me to witness managers repeat common mistakes in the areas this book covers: how to hire, how to fire, how to conduct and document performance reviews, etc. This is not a business strategy book; it's simply a "do's and don'ts" guide for managers. I have heard Bob Rosner speak, and recommend that, if you like the book, you should consider him at a company function.

1 out of 5 stars Politically correct garbage.......2001-08-07

The Boss's Survival Guide adds nothing to the existing literature, demonstrates a nauseating politically correct viewpoint where only women can be harmed, and where information is actually clearly presented, is only useful for the neophyte manager who has been living in a vacuum all his life. I am sorry I wasted my money on this book. As I promised the author in an email, I threw the book into the nearest garbage truck.

1 out of 5 stars Only for first time managers.......2001-07-12

I am always looking for good advice as a manager. This book is really intended for first time managers who do not have a clue about what it means to be a manager, either in the sense of how to manage or the legal issues involved. Having been a manager for some years I found not one single useful paragraph. It is all basic and not inspired at all. Bottom line: if you have never been a manager, it is not a bad handbook. If you have any real experience as a manager: save your money.... A better choice would be "First..Break All the Rules"

      Book Description

Because change takes place so quickly today, the classic change management techniques that helped organizations institutionalize change in the past are no longer adequate. Author Beverly Goldberg asserts that the three major steps in a traditional change management program -- unfreezing, changing, and refreezing -- should be replaced by new stages -- the static stage, the fluid stage, and the dynamic stage. In this InDepth she helps you set about creating a change methodology by focusing on the communications in your organization. She outlines the goals, tools, and best solution for an organization faced with change. InDepth is a BH SmartDoc designed to take a major workplace challenge and make it manageable. Each InDepth offers a rigorous analysis of a critical business issue. BH SmartDocs are published by BrownHerron Publishing and are sold exclusively by Amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just Theory - Practical Too!.......2002-02-25

The author does an excellent job of blending the current and classic theories on change management and organizational learning with practical examples of how to actually successfully implement an organization-wide change initiative -- no small task. This is a great tool for managers, team leaders, executives or anyone else involved in an organization that is undergoing some kind of change (and aren't they all!). I especially appreciated the emphasis on training and communication throughout the entire system before, during and after the initiative -- as in my experience, this is absolutely critical to success.

5 out of 5 stars Effective and Efficient!.......2002-02-21

A comprehensive change management strategy is one of the most powerful tools any business operating in the 2000's can have, and forthright communication is a key part of that strategy. Goldberg effectively helps managers help employees view change as comfortable rather than threatening, and at a crisp 13 pages, managers should be comfortable buying reading copies for their employees as well.

      1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware! It's only 13 pages!.......2002-02-16

Buyer Beware. [price] for a total of 13 pages. This "BH SmartDoc" is a magazine article being sold with books, sold in the same format as a book, costing as much as a book, and it's a mere 13 pages long (12 actually, the last page is devoted to selling other SmartDoc's). It's informative and well written but there's nothing much new about change management and certainly not worth [the price]. Skip it.

Despite the new and (some would say) as-yet unproven commercial nature of "networked interactive media," major firms ranging from McDonnell-Douglas and Boeing Company to Kaiser Permanente and Price Waterhouse have been using the technology--such as modem-equipped notebook computers in the field, and intranets with day-to-day corporate data--to hone their competitive edge. The Interactive Corporation, by independent consultant Roger Fetterman, uses the experiences of these and other forward-thinking companies to place such technological tools and cyberbusiness savvy into a larger context for those who may glimpse the potential but lack the know-how or confidence to actively proceed.

        Book Description

In The Interactive Corporation, author Roger Fetterman explains the new uses of interactive media through case studies of major corporations like Hewlett-Packard Company and Nortel (Northern Telecom).  Demonstrating the successes of networked interactive media in business processes, Fetterman dissolves the hype and ambiguity often associated with  new media and answers the important question "What does interactive media mean to me and my business in the new globally competitive marketplace?"

The Interactive Corporation is organized for you to have quick access to the case-study success stories in such business areas as manufacturing and distribution.  Leading corporations such as Apple Computer, AlliedSignal, Booz-Allen & Hamilton, Kaiser Permanente, and the The Boeing Company are profiled as they undergo the metamorphosis into truly interactive corporations.

5 out of 5 stars Using technology to drive improvements in the bottom line.......2000-07-27

With this book, Mr. Fetterman has provided an excellent resource for companies looking to leverage technology to improve the bottom line. In my own efforts as an IT manager for a Fortune 50 company, I was looking for a resource that would help justify new technology projects, especially in the use of training. What I found in this book was a new approach that explains how to turn technology projects "inside out" to focus on the business results, and use technology as a supporting tool. Certainly this sounds like common sense, but I've seen many technology projects, especially in the world of multimedia, that don't "get it."

The book explains how "learning by doing" approaches can be much more successful and provide measurable results and high positive ROI over traditional or web-based training. The book provides several excellent examples of business projects that have made good use of multimedia tools. Mr. Fetterman clearly explains the ROI for these efforts.

I beleive that anyone in a position to effect employee productivity and/or justify expenditures on technology projects would benefit form this book. The case studies Mr. Fetterman provides use real-world projects and results that are re-usable in any environment.

2 out of 5 stars Fairly Obvious Conclusions With Interesting ROIs.......1999-01-14

This book is definitely not for Webmasters or anyone familiar with interactive media development except so far as it can serve as an introduction to suit-talk (how to persuade your boss to go all the way).

The first two chapters were interesting but in both case studies the task at hand was fairly obvious and didn't present any real breakthroughs in networking the work environment.

Sorry for the poor review. I was expecting more.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for anyone in business today........1997-09-26

Mr. Fetterman has identified a topic - The Interactive Corporation -- that is of paramount importance to all businesses today. His approach of emphasizing the understanding of "business processes" rather than focusing on the available hardware and software, is one that every business person should seriously consider. (Quote from the book p.256) "Technology is never the beginning.......Begin by understanding where and when technology should be applied to enhance the outcomes of the process and to satisfy corporate goals and objectives." The book includes numerous examples that further illustrate Mr. Fetterman's points using very specific case studies. A good book for CEOs that don't want to wade through techno-babble, but are interested in how they can begin to think about applying the present and developing interactive computer technologies to their own business.

4 out of 5 stars Avoid this book, good as it is........2000-10-31

This book, the third edition of a worthy effort, has been superseded by Howard's GET CLARK SMART (2000), which is the fourth edition, with numerous changes and updates. The more recent book is published with no reference to the earlier editions and under a different title, so the unwary consumer is liable to buy either the outdated edition, or (as in my case) both editions, without realizing that he's getting two versions of the same book. This is ironic, given the author's reputation as a consumer advisor.

5 out of 5 stars excellent, saves the consumer $$$$, 1st book written for me.......1999-10-26

This book has saved me major $ from the sale of my home to the purchase of a new one. Mr. Howard cover it all from credit cards, credit reports, buying cars etc..... This book was written for me (the consumer)and I will recomend that all my friends buy, plus I have bought serveral copies for Christmas gifts...

5 out of 5 stars great advice, easy reading, good web addresses.......1999-06-03

Clark takes his talk show and puts it into book form for those who can't hear him. This geek can speak, and his simple tips will save you money, time, aggrevation and embarassment. Buy it for someone who needs tips but is too lazy or shy too ask! He has a crack staff behind him, and while they differ on saving money, they all know they owe Clark a huge thanx for taking them to Italy for $200 apiece. One money-saving idea will pay for the book, and your friends will literally start calling you "Clark".

              5 out of 5 stars Clark ComesThrough!.......1998-12-15

Clarks newest book is excellent!!! Well written andeasy to read. It is a good read cover to cover, or as a flip thorughreference for what you need at the current time. This book has already saved me the purchase price. However, a word of Clark like advice: I bought mine at costco and Clark even signed it. Dennis

5 out of 5 stars An excellent consumer guide.......1998-04-19

This book should be the most dog-eared volume in any household where watching finances is a priority. Howard and Meltzer explain the ins and outs of consumer issues in an easy-to-understand and thorough manner. As co-author of a consumer book (Debt Free: Your Guide to Personal Bankruptcy Without Shame), I recommend this guide. John M. Caher

Change can be a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. The message of Who Moved My Cheese? is that all can come to see it as a blessing, if they understand the nature of cheese and the role it plays in their lives. Who Moved My Cheese? is a parable that takes place in a maze. Four beings live in that maze: Sniff and Scurry are mice--nonanalytical and nonjudgmental, they just want cheese and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Hem and Haw are "littlepeople," mouse-size humans who have an entirely different relationship with cheese. It's not just sustenance to them; it's their self-image. Their lives and belief systems are built around the cheese they've found. Most of us reading the story will see the cheese as something related to our livelihoods--our jobs, our career paths, the industries we work in--although it can stand for anything, from health to relationships. The point of the story is that we have to be alert to changes in the cheese, and be prepared to go running off in search of new sources of cheese when the cheese we have runs out.

Dr. Johnson, coauthor of The One Minute Manager and many other books, presents this parable to business, church groups, schools, military organizations--anyplace where you find people who may fear or resist change. And although more analytical and skeptical readers may find the tale a little too simplistic, its beauty is that it sums up all natural history in just 94 pages: Things change. They always have changed and always will change. And while there's no single way to deal with change, the consequence of pretending change won't happen is always the same: The cheese runs out. --Lou Schuler

              3 out of 5 stars Simplified change.......2007-10-15

Got an hour to fill? That's how long it'll take to read. As many have stated, company heads and consultant groups hand this book out to employees when there are about to be changes in the company. Basically, this is a very simplified parable on four different takes on how to deal with change. Of course at the end you are supposed to decide which of the characters you currently are. Sniff - you actively move about seeking change. Scurry - you move about and quickly adapt to the change to make things happen. And then there's Hem and Haw. Both resist change and stick to the old expecting it to return to the promised treasures. Eventually Haw decides that staying in one place with no rewards is not progressing so opts to go seek change on his struggling legs. The Hem remains obstinant and refuses to change and his fate fades away. Of course no one wants to claim they are Hem but most people are. One of my favorite bits in the book is the statement along the lines of "If you can't change, you may become extinct."

Overall this is a very simple take on how people can adapt to change in their personal and professional lives. Seems quite similar on how to change your personal attitude and outlook that is presented in Benjamin Hoff's "Tao of Pooh". If you're in a company that is about to use outside consulting, expect to get 'homework' to read this book.

              5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-10-15

This is a fantastic book about reassessing your life and career. I've given it to friends after reading it myself.

              3 out of 5 stars It's an OK book.......2007-10-04

Just like most of the people, I got this book from my employer (I hope it's not a sign of restructuring :)).
I'm afraid that I do a too good job of reviewing the book one would no longer need to buy it anymore. In essence, the whole book can be summarized in about 10 statements. In all fairness though, these are insightful and worth meditating on statements.
So, like I said... An OK book.

              3 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking.......2007-10-03

The book is an easy and quick read but the story will put thoughts in your head that you will think about for years if not a lifetime. Life brings us all challenges so this book is for all of us... That is, unless your life is perfect.

              1 out of 5 stars Genuinely Insulting..........2007-09-29

Genuinely insulting to the independent thinker. Yeah I know, it's been said countless times but I felt the need to reinforce that notion. If you're someone that's more comfortable being a follower and having your life and work environment structured for you then you're more likely to enjoy this book and find something meaningful in it. If you're someone that uses logic and reason to guide your decisions then don't waste your time or money on this rehashed brainwashing manual. This is a book written for unquestioning, mindless followers, not a book for leaders. But a tool that leaders would use to try and control their subordinates.

The Survival Kits are fun, easy to follow guides designed to be read quickly cover to cover. They are intentionally written to be concise, shorter, and less intimidating than a reference book. As in true wilderness and Army survival kits, the key to success is limiting the baggage.

The 1999 Tax Survival Kit provides colorful, down-to-earth, humorous, and inexpensive tax preparation guidance for readers. It includes such topics as: "20 Safe Deductions You Can Take This Year", "Potential Audit Triggers", and an "Overview of the 1998 Tax Law Changes". The kit includes folders on the inside front and inside back covers for the reader to store his/her tax-related documents, as well as a perforated bookmark to identify key sections.

I'm very pleased with the Tax Survival book. I was a little dissappointed at first with the feel of it because when I got it I thought it was a magazine. However, very handy and a great value. I'm using the pockets to store my receipts.

5 out of 5 stars Short and to the point. Covered the key subjects. Funny too.......1998-12-28

I am only 26 and new at the tax game. This book was a quick read; I skipped over the long bulky reference books that I can't believe anyone really reads. Each subject was covered.

Take a look at the Deferred savings account article. In only 4 pages it describes up to 9 choices. I also liked the short descriptions of capital gains, areas to worry about, etc.

The quality of the paper and the graphics is good too. Terrific value. I plan to use their $9.95 Internet service to file my Fed and Ohio taxes, efile, and get my refund FAST. Internet is the way to go!

Anyone who can lighten up taxes has my vote!!

5 out of 5 stars Clear simple to the point. Quick read; fun too........1998-12-22

The only book I have found that is short, covers all the subjects, has a bright crisp feel to it (nice paper; colorful; cartoons and comments to keep you awake). Hope to read other books by these folks; if you can make Tax interesting, other stuff should be easy.

I like their concept of less is more. Wading through reference materials in most of the other tax books is like going through a jungle. They provide directions to deeper information through IKONS that refer you to the IRS pub you need.

Has all the websites for IRS, States, etc. And you can file your fed/state taxes, plus e-file for only $9.95.

Also, I really don't like the name "Dummies" or "Idiots". Survival sounds a lot more supportive and less like a joke name--and taxes are no joke!

Less than $10; so how can you go wrong. Enough from me. Good reading!

5 out of 5 stars Concise, complete, to the point. Perfect Tax Guide.......1998-12-16

Perfect for an average person like me. Covers all subjects; if you want more info, they refer you to the right IRS publication. Concise, fun, cautious (out west we like that). Colorful; allows you to file your federal & state (don't have that in Wyoming, but most folks do) forms, e-file, only for $9.95. Not a frat joke name like For Dummies or Idiots Guide. Sorry guys, a girl talking! Great book for everyone.

It all started as a financial-help segment on the Today show. Which prompted 54,000 letters. Which then resulted in Ginger Applegarth's The Money Diet. Applegarth, who has practiced financial planning for more than 20 years and leads a prominent Boston-based financial and investment firm, believes that the "processes of financial planning and dieting are almost identical." Both require an honest assessment of the present, a realistic goal for what you want to become, and a plan for getting there. At the heart of Applegarth's program for financial wellness are her "Willpower Worksheets," tools designed to help determine your net worth, monitor your spending habits, set financial goals, determine your insurance needs, select investment plans, and buy a house. The Money Diet is an upbeat and well-rounded guide to managing money that should benefit almost all people, especially those trying to get their money habits under control.
